Internet Proxy Software

Good morning.
As I regularly surf the webs via a GPRS/modem uplink, I'm very often annoyed by high-res pictures, java, flash and the like (i.e. bloat sites).
Because of this I got the idea of setting up a proxy on my VPS to minimize traffic and eventually do some filtering.
Is there any software or combination of software that allows me to do the following:
-relatively secure and actively developed software
-user-based access control
-"webwasher" (content and site filter,  blacklisting, whitelisting), rules per user
-image-compression
-dns caching
-data caching
-SOCKS
Does anyone have such a setup running and wants to tell me/us about it?
Yours,
Unrest

@ammon: Are you using this setup and are there other useful daemons/scripts that can add to it?
To me it seems that polipo is a "eierlegende Wollmilchsau", how we call it in german. Thank you!
Im using polipo + privoxy. Nothing to add, I can only post you my config for polipo/privoxy.
Heh, I had to google for the phrase.

  • Do I need internet security software for macbook pro

When I purchase my new MacBook Pro from Bestbuy, it came with free internet security software that is Mac compatible.  Do I need it?

I would not download and install any additional software if it was me...with a firewall in place, and good computing practices, the Mac OS X system does a great job of self-protection.  The info in Thomas's site is also a big help.
Also, keep in mind that the worst of the worst are Norton and McAfee for Mac OS X systems, and MacKeeper is generally considered to be malware in itself...almost impossible to remove once installed because of the way it hides files that keep popping up on you.

  • Do I need internet security software for my iPad?

Is anti-virus or internet security software needed for my iPad?

There isn't any.  That would break the security model used by Apple.  Apps cannot
    -- modify os.
    -- modify other apps
-- look at other apps data with the exception of pictures.
You can change your dns address so as to pick a fast and secure dns site.  I pick google: 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4
    Apple provides for these things.

  • Can lync client use internet proxy settings to proxy edge servers, if direct access is not reachable?

Hi everybody I am trying to Login with my lync Client out of my organization. So I am using lync as a remote user. I am in another organization, and I am using their coporate lan wired and wireless, but I cannot Login to lync in my organization.
I see that I cannot Access my edge Server on port 443 to authenticate directly, I know that Client in this organization use Internet Proxy to browse the Internet. they have a .pac in their ie Settings.
my question is; can lync Client use Internet Proxy Settings to reach the Destination? I mean the Access edge on port 443?
or it can use only Client direct Access to reach the edge Servers?
I Think that the answer is that I use tcp protocol and not http, and maybe that is the reason why I cannot use the Internet Explorer Proxy Settings to reach the Access edge Servers, different maybe is the case I Need to reach the reverse Proxy for live Meetings.
    Hope my question is clear.
    Thanks

Proxy settings are used to tell Internet Explorer the network address of an intermediary server (known as a proxy server) that is used between the browser and the Internet on some networks.
Lync client doesn’t use Internet Proxy Setting. You need to access the Edge service directly.

  • Please adjust your InterneWhat do I do with this message: Please adjust your Internet Security software to allow referring URLs.

I am trying to access Morningstar through my Hennepin County Library Account. When I do so, I get this message:
Sorry, we were not able to authenticate you for access to this resource. Please adjust your Internet Security software to allow referring URLs.
    How do I do this?

    Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.''
    Thank you.

  • SPARC v240 can i install Solaris 10 and free Radius proxy software?

On a SPARC v240 can i install Solaris 10 and free Radius proxy software?

No, the patch was created on top of Solaris 10 packages. The patchadd utility requires that the VERSION strings match between the installed package's pkginfo file and the pkginfo files inside the patch. Unless the base package did not change between Solaris 9 and Solaris 10, the patch will not get applied because of the VERSION mismatch. But it is very unlikely that the packages did not change between the two releases.
Even if you were to be able to install it, there could be dependencies that the patch's binaries have on other Solaris 10 binaries.

  • Internet related software not launching

I've recently reinstalled Mac OS X 10.4 on my PowerBook G4 and updated the software to 10.4.11 via Software Update. However, having done so, all the System's internet related software (i.e. Mail, Safari, Software Update, iChat, .Mac System Prefs) will no longer launch.
The applications will bounce momentarily in the dock, then disappear without an error message. In System Preferences, the Software Update and .Mac preferences panes refuse to open, simply stating, for example "Preferences Error / Could not load Software Update"
Using Firefox and Thunderbird is possible but I'm unable to update the system software and unable to sync with my mobileMe account which is a major problem.

Hi carlnp, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD, but saves all your files and gives a new OS...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.
If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

  • OS X as a internet Proxy Server

I am new to the Mac world and have been tasked with setting up our OSX Server as an internet proxy. I have limited (and old) experience with SCO and Windows Admin and could get this done if it were Windows. However, I have scoured past posts and other documentation until I am both cross eyed and confused. Here's what I have:
Entire network into router that accesses the internet. The OS X server is on this same network and connected to the same router. We also have our intranet through same setup. DHCP is handled by another machine (Win 2000) which cannot be changed. The OS X machine is currently used for file sharing only but we are needing to use it as a proxy to the internet.
Should I reposition the Server between the users router and internet connection, vice all on the same router as they are. Is this really necessary?
Now, what need I do to setup the OS X as the proxy? Will I need to install Squid or something like IF-2k for filtering? I cannot locate the internet sharing tab. I have checked the proxy box but know it isn't that easy.
I am performing most of the admin remotely from another part of the building.
My skills are a bit dated but am confident that with a little direction we can acheive a relatively easy solution. I hate to say it, but address this as if I'm a complete novice (barney style you might say). Realizing this could be a lengthy post, any info would be appreciated, including links to other info vice writing a reply here.
    Thanks in advance,
    Mark
      Mac OS X (10.4.1)

When you say 'internet proxy' do you mean a web proxy for http/https traffic, or do you want to proxy other traffic, too?
Additionally, are you looking to just proxy the traffic (potentially caching content at your network edge) or are you looking for content filtering, too (e.g. prevent users visiting certain sites)?
If you're just looking for a web proxy then you can just build and install squid (it works well), or use the built-in Apache 2 server (although I would recommend upgrading to apache 2.2 rather than the 2.0.x bundled version).
If you've used squid in the past then that might be the easier way to go. Squid can also act as a proxy for other protocols, so it might fit your needs better.
Both Squid and Apache require configuring via the terminal. If you're not familiar with building applications on the command line then you might consider a commercial package such as InterGate which packs a proxy server into a package along with various other 'net goodies (rate filtering, connection teaming, NAT, content filters, etc.).
Should I reposition the Server between the users router and internet connection
That depends. If you want to force users to go through the proxy you might have to otherwise you're relying on users' systems being configured to use the proxy, which experienced users might be able to circumvent.
I cannot locate the internet sharing tab. I have checked the proxy box but know it isn't that easy.
In Mac OS X Server, all sharing functions are controlled via either Workgroup Manager (sharepoints, access control, etc.) or Server Admin (process configuration/stop/start/monitoring), but there's no 1-button proxy server setting.

There are plenty of them around such as Fring, Gizmo etc etc etc.
