Internet Recovery Parental Controls
Hi,
I've noticed that while using Safari in internet recovery mode, some pages are blocked by parental controls, but the parental controls don't seem to follow the controls set up in the admin account. Anybody have any ideas of where those settings are set? Is there a way to change them?
Any help is appreciated!
Open firmware password may be the way to do it. Mind you, a clever enough person can bypass that, but it takes more effort than it usually is worth. Put a hidden camera in the room if you are worried something will happen, and backup the data only when you are present. And if you forget the open firmware password, you may have locked yourself out for good anyway.

I set up a user account for my child. I am able to access the internet through firefox. I then set up parental controls and can NOT access the internet anymore. I turn off parental controls for that user account. I still can not access the internet from that account.
Parental controls is a part of the Windows operating system and not Firefox. You can get help here: http://support.microsoft.com/ask-community/windows/

In attempting to add a music lesson program for my daughters band lessons we have messed up our computer. I now have both a managed account and an administrator account (both in my name). It is using the managed account now and not letting use the Internet because parental controls keep popping up. I would like to delete the managed account and get back to the admin account but I have no idea what my login is for the admin account. We have never had to use it before this problem started and what we thought it was when we set it up does not work. Any ideas?
If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know that account password, the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
Otherwise, boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, type this:
resetpassword
That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
Select ▹ Restart from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but you won't be able to unlock the Keychain. If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it. You’ll need to reset your keychain in the preferences of the Keychain Access application. -
Blocking website (parental controls
Is ther a way to block certain website that I don't want allowed on my android?
Hi Diana,
Unfortunately, I can't find any Firefox addons that can give you parental controls on Android.
An alternative option could be to set up parental controls on your entire home wifi network - assuming you'll be using your tablet at home?
Your ISP (the company you pay for your internet connection) might offer this service, so you could contact them or check their website to find out.
Another free service for your home network is provided byOpenDNS - but it will require some technical know-how to set up:
https://www.opendns.com/home-internet-security/parental-controls/opendns-home/
Hope that helps!

Is it possible to restrict what sites(FB etc.)are accessed through this router and times certain devices can be allowed wifi access?
Not directly on the router but you can setup parental controls through external/3rd party services. For example OpenDNS allows you to setup parental controls which are managed from their site and a separate account. Once you have OpenDNS configured you can tell your 4G LTE router and personal devices to use it as their main DNS service.

Parental controls for internet access
I would like to be able use my macbook pro to manage our 4 children's access to the internet. Most importantly times of access but also some internet policing.
We have an airport extreme base station and airport express.
The children all have iPads of varying age and model number.
Can this be done and if so how?You can set restrictions in the devices. Settings > General > Restrictions > Enable Restrictions. You would do this on each of their devices. Be sure you use different passcodes for each device and make them strong passcode. Write them down somewhere and keep them hidden so your children cannot find them.
If the kids also have access to a computer, then you can control it by opening Users & Groups and creating Managed user accounts for them to use. Clicking on Parental Controls will allow you to determine what they have access to. -
Parental Controls - Internet Access Stopped!
My wife has a white MacBook running Leopard 10.5.8. It has worked fine for two years. Nothing was changed. She could not change anythign due to being logged into a managed account.
It could always access the internet over our home (or any available) WiFi perfectly. All of a sudden, yesterday afternoon, her managed account with "Parental Controls" enabled cannot access any internet. Safari mentions that it cannot access the server. When checking the network setting all seems fine, it can access the WiFi router.
The administrator account can access the internet over WiFi just fine.
I created another account called Test. In standard mode it can access the internet over WiFi just fine, but when i turn on "Parental Controls" Safari, or any other internet related program cannot access the internet. This includes the software update in the Finder.
What's going on? i have found similar issues on the Apple Support Communities going back unanswered to 2007!Beach Dude,
I have the same problem, and have had on virtually every operating system since Parental Controls was introduced.
I have multiple kids with individual accounts. THe perplexing thing is that if I enable parental controls on my daughter's account, it works fine. I can set time limits, etc... and it works! But if I so much as turn on parental controls in my youngest son's account, every web browser is unable to connect to the internet at all from his account.
BUGGY software. And apple knows it is buggy, but it isn't core system stuff so they ignore the problem. I even tried setting up a new account for him and moving his old files over and resetting permissions. Still the same problem.
I've searched high and low for a solution and found none. I have found a limited number of users with the same complaint...and absolute silence from apple....
There is nothing on these boards that has worked, and I've tried several different solutions. Most responses are the useless kind, "change the setting in parental controls" kind of sophomoric advice from people who just assume what the problem is instead of reading our description of it.
Anyway, I haven't found a good alternate software solution for limiting the time and hours for children's accounts; but I did find an excellent tool for managing internet content access. It is called opendns and it is free and it works! Do a google search for "opennds" if your primary concern is managing access to web content. If you come up with a good solution for fixing parental controls so that it doesn't just cut off web access, please let me know here - or if you find an alternate software solution that allows an administrator to set time limits for standard accounts, I would like to know that too.

Parental controls for wireless internet use?
Hello,
This is my first post here. I've had an iPod mini for a while, and I just bought my son an ipod touch for Christmas. We have wireless internet in our home, and now I am concerned that he can browse anything, anytime! Is there a way to set parental controls to restrict what he views on the internet via his itouch? Thank you!As a parent of 3 boys I can say that parental controls is no small issue.
A relatively simple thing you can do is set up an account (free) with OpenDNS.
See: http://opendns.com/ Once the account is set up you can specify what content should be block and what should not be blocked.
Then set the DNS servers on your iPod Touch to the OpenDNS servers (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220). See: http://andrewescobar.com/archive/2007/07/06/change-iphones-wi-fi-dns-settings-to -connect-to-the-internet/
Alternatively, you can set up your home router to use the OpenDNS servers and protect every computer in your home.
Note: neither of this solutions protect your son when he uses an open network OUTSIDE of your home for internet access.
Hope this helps,

Kids can't browse internet in their profile if parental controls are on
Hi,
I have profiles set up for each of my kid on our Mac. Up until a couple of weeks ago, I could set parental controls for time/programs to open etc. AND they could still browse the internet using Safari.
For some reason the last couple of weeks the kids can't browse Safari if they have a managed account. The only way to let them browse is to change their account status to "standard" instead of "managed". Is there a way that I can manage their account and still let them browse the internet? I've been trying to figure out this for days but I can't figure out what has changed to prevent them from doing this. I have recently run all software updates.
Thanks so much!I'm replying to my own posting as I have solved the problem and wanted to post it in case anyone else has the same problem. I would venture to say that upcoming updates to the Android system may solve this problem.
For some reason, when the Thrive is set for DHCP ip addressing, it is not going out to the internet. So, I changed the network profile to manual with a static IP address. I also input the router address and DNS addresses with the router's IP address. As soon as I saved the changes it was magic. The tablet connected and internet speed was lightning fast.
So, anyone having problems, give this a try as you'll not get anywhere with Cisco or Toshiba support. -
Parental control - how to limit internet time
Anyone got any advice on how to limit internet access time to a shorter time than the full amount of computer time set in Parental Controls. My 14 year old wastes most of her computer time surfing stuff of little value. I am happy for her to still have daily computer time but don't want it all used up on the net. I want to encourage her to use some of the more creative potential of the Mac i.e Garageband, iMovie - she used to - she is very creative but gets sucked into other stuff very easily.
Are there any add-ons that I should consider?
Any advice gratefully received. If you use a Time Machine connected to your router, you can limit the time on that and when it can kick certain devices of the internet between certain times.
I would happy to go through the set up of this with you if you would like.
Other than that there maybe some add-ons / free software however if she's clever enough she could disable them.
I hope this helps -
No internet access when Parental Controls are enabled.
I have a MacBook Pro running Leopard(OSX 10/5.8). Until recently Parental Controls worked flawlessly for my kids accounts. Within the last few weeks something happened and now the kids can't get to any websites with Parental Controls enabled. Every URL we try we get a "can't connect to the server" message in Safari. Switching their accounts to standard fixes the issue so it is definitelyt a Parental Controls issue. I created a new account and see the same issue if I make it a managed account. Nothing has changed with our setup. i.e. no software upgrades, router changes etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I'm experiencing the same issues. I've tried some of the work-arounds that people reported as working for them, but they haven't solved the issue for me. I don't know if this is a good clue, but here is the error log from /private/var/log/apache2

Has anyone been success in installing the Parental Controls program available at: https://www.verizon.net/micro/parentalcontrol/default.aspx Been on the phone and remote session with Verizon and McAfee for over an hour trying to get this to install. I've tried this on Windows 7 and XP. Fails when it asks for verizon credentials.
You're right, it isn't necessary but it is designed to work with VISS. Sorry for the confusion. Did you clear IE cache and try again? Also, you said when you return to the install screen, it says authentication fails, how are you getting back to that screen, does it come up automatically or do you have to navigate there? IMPORTANT: Do not use your browser's navigation buttons to move between pages because you will lose the information you enter. Instead, click the Cancel, Back, and Continue buttons below each form on the page... this info came from verizon.mcafee.com. If you've already cleared your browsers cache and it still doesn't work, take a look at that site, click on FAQ's on the left hand side then click the dropdown button to choose Family Protection. There are several FAQs there that could help with the issue you're having, including Installing Verizon Family Protection and Removing third party applications which are incompatible with Family Protection.

How do I turn off internet recovery in Mountain Lion?
I need to turn off internet recovery in Mountain Lion. The reason is if you use internet recovery you can access safari and although parental controls are on, internet is unmonitored. I want to ensure my MBP is secure from the darker parts of the internet and thus I don't want there to be any unmonitored internet access.
Is there a way to turn off internet recovery or is it hardwired into Mounatin Lion?

Cannot enable parental controls for Guest if FileVault enabled
FileVault is enabled on my Mac. When I subsequently enabled Find My Mac, the Guest User account was automatically enabled, as it is required for Find My Mac's theft recovery feature. When I accessed the Guest User in the Users & Groups Preferences panel, the "Enable parental controls" option for Guest User was greyed out. Thus, anyone with physical access to my computer, such as my kid, can gain unfettered access to the Internet without a password.
I did find a solution. I unchecked the "Allow guests to log in to this computer" box in the Preferences panel. This caused the "Enable parental controls" box to become checked (seems to be a bug). I then checked the "Allow guests to log in to this computer" box, which caused the "Enable parental controls" box to become unchecked. At this point, the "Enable parental controls" box was no longer greyed out, and I was able to check it.
System: Late 2014 Retina iMac with 3.5 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB memory, OS 10.10Update: Although the method above appeared to enable parental controls, they do not work. When I log in as Guest (causing the computer to reboot into Safari-only mode), I am able to access a very well-known adult website (play*** dot com).
