When I purchase my new MacBook Pro from Bestbuy, it came with free internet security software that is Mac compatible. Do I need it?

I would not download and install any additional software if it was me...with a firewall in place, and good computing practices, the Mac OS X system does a great job of self-protection. The info in Thomas's site is also a big help.
Also, keep in mind that the worst of the worst are Norton and McAfee for Mac OS X systems, and MacKeeper is generally considered to be malware in itself...almost impossible to remove once installed because of the way it hides files that keep popping up on you.

Best internet security software for Mac?

Dear all
I will soon be purchasing an Apple iMac. I'm new to Apple computers and wish to buy a good internet sercurity package for it - I'd be grateful if any of you could pass on your recommendations.
Norton scores terribly on Amazon... Not read too much though about McAfee or Kapersky?

I'll agree with Paul, but add one little conditional statement of: Yet.
Some day, no one knows when exactly, things will likely change. Someone will figure out a reliable cross platform attack vector and pave the way for all the miscreants of the world to start creating havoc in the Mac world.
So, at least for the time being you can enjoy running your system without any security software installed. However, you should be keeping an eye on the weather, so to speak. Right now the sky is sunny and clear, but somewhere over the horizon some clouds are forming for the coming storm. Keep an eye out for those clouds, and be prepared to board up the windows, etc.
And when that day comes, avoid suites. They are kind of the exception to a number of rules. While it may be convenient to have a single set of programs that are all updated at the same time, they also have a shared code base. That means they all share a potential common attack vector. Someone finds a way to exploit that common code, they can topple the entire suite in one fell swoop. You're much better off having individual programs made by different companies. If one program is compromised, odds are good that attack won't work on the others.
We can also hope that by the time that storm hits, AV companies will have gotten their collective act together with the Mac versions of their products. They've had it a little too good for a little too long in the Windows world. They've gotten lazy, fat, and slow. With the Windows versions blowing goats, I can't imagine why the Mac versions would magically be any better. Not everything will be like MS Office, where the Mac version puts its Windows counterpart to complete and total shame.

Very slow iMac after installing internet security software

I purchased Kaspersky Internet Security for Mac and since installing it my iMac has been painfully slow, from turning on, to opening Apps or just viewing documents.
Has anyone experienced the same issue?

Antivirus software is NOT needed if the Mac you are running is only running OS X. Antivirus apps interfere with normal performance and operation of a Mac because they program too many controls into the main OS X system software impacting general performance of your Mac.
Here are some of my tidbits of advice on how to avoid viruses in the future, if you encounter a virus, again.
Some anti-virus solutions can slow down your Mac, but to be honest, the best anit-virus app is you, the user and your brain.
Don't visit questionable websites or website you are unsure about.
Don't use Torrents or engage in "Torrenting"
Don't install pirated software or software downloaded from a questionable or unknown websites or untrutsted sources.
Java is still a vulnerability concern, if you do not need it, don't use it.
Use a browser filter and pop-up blocker
Don't open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize.
Install security updates when they become available
Educate yourself as to what threats are common and active.
In effect, use your own brain as the antivirus filter.
Follow that advise and in MOST cases, you will be fine and won't risk your Mac to potential Trojans, malware or viruses.

Time Machine doesnt work with McAfee Internet Security Software

Hello,
I recently installed the McAfee product All Access Internet Security on my 2011 iMac (10.9.4) and configured the real time scan, spyware, application protection and firewall features. All appeared to be running fine with no performance degradation which is great, but after some testing I discovered that the firewall feature prevents Time Machine from connecting to Time Capsule and back ups don't work. Upon deactivating the firewall feature but leaving all other McAfee services running the Time Machine works fine again and all is well.
I'm wondering if there is a way to make a change to a setting that will allow the McAfee firewall to run as two layers of protection (Desktop Firewall and Time Capsule firewall) would be ideal.
Has anyone experienced this or have any suggestions on where to start ?

Just did it here and its working.
My first language is portuguese, so I will try to guess what the similar in English, ok?
1- Go to Mcafee "Preferences"(clic on the Mcfee icon in the upside of your monitor)
2- Go to "Firewall"
3- Here there is a choice in the little window: "Type: public" is the default option. I changed it to "Type: house or work".
Its working now. Already made two backups in Time Machine(Time Capsule). Don't know what will happen after a day or two.

I joined bt last wednesday moving from sky after a pretty awfull time. I have Bt Infiity 2 but i am not able to download the security software or set up an email address at all?
I also find the lag on online games appaling ??
can any one offer any siggestions or help

As a new user you would be on the new BT mail, so it may be that you have to actually sign up for an address from within your MyBT login page. I am not sure what happens now.
Have you registered on MyBT yet?
You would probably need that info to download the security software, if you really want to use it. The general opinion on this forum, is that it slows the computer down a lot, compared with some of the free alternatives like Microsoft Security Essentials.

I've just downloaded FF 4 beta, do i still need to purchase internet security software & anti-virus software for protection?

I have not renewed my McAfee. i am not sure whether FF 4 beta security protection is good enough. I do internet banking often. do i still need to have other security or anti-virus software?

Firefox is just a web browser, you still need anti-virus, anti-malware and firewall protection.

When this occurred I was using Firefox 6.0.2 before I just updated to 7.o. I just tried it again with 7.0 and the problem persists.I've never had problems before; I use our library system (www.hclib.org) all the time to access the NetLib audiobook download site (based on my library card number). I've searched everything I can think of on the Norton Security Suite Version: 4.3.0.5 software. My ISP is xfinity.comcast.com
I have been monkeying around with addons and extensions, could one of them be causing this? I disables almost all the addons but that didn't make a difference either.
I haven't made any changes to Norton since it was installed (automatic updates).
I have a Toshiba Satellite, running Vista.

Norton Antivirus /Internet Security software for Mac

I do a lot of office work at home on my iMac & send home files from my office PC which was infected with a serious trojan virus today. Tech support worked 6 hrs to clean my PC at officde. Worried my iMac may be also infected so bought Norton. Any issues if install on my iMac

OS X versions 10.6.7 and later have built-in detection of known Mac malware in downloaded files. The recognition database is automatically updated once a day; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders. In most cases, there’s no benefit from any other automated protection against malware.
The most effective defense against malware is your own intelligence. All known malware on the Internet that affects a fully-updated installation of OS X 10.6 or later takes the form of trojans, which can only work if the victim is duped into running them. If you're smarter than the malware attacker thinks you are, you won't be duped. That means, primarily, that you never install software from an untrustworthy source. How do you know a source is untrustworthy?
Any website that prompts you to install a “codec,” “plug-in,” or “certificate” that comes from that same site, or an unknown site, merely in order to use the site, is untrustworthy.
A web operator who tells you that you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, or that you have won a prize in a contest you never entered, is trying to commit a crime with you as the victim.
“Cracked” copies of commercial software downloaded from a bittorrent are likely to be infected.
Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be downloaded directly from the developer’s website. No intermediary is acceptable.
Disable Java (not JavaScript) in your web browser(s). Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This setting is mandatory in OS X 10.5.8 or earlier, because Java in those versions has bugs that make it unsafe to use on the Internet. Those bugs will probably never be fixed, because those older operating systems are no longer being maintained by Apple. Migrate to a newer version of the Mac OS as soon as you can.
Follow these guidelines, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can reasonably be.
Never install any commercial "anti-virus" products for the Mac, as they all do more harm than good. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use the free software ClamXav — nothing else.

I am a new iMac user. I access the internet through my Belkin router. Do I need to purchase anti-virus, anti-spam software? The guy at the Apple store didn't feel it was necessary.

It's generally agreed that there is no current need for anti-virus software when using a Mac OS. However, if you will be using BootCamp to install and use Windows operating software, your partition that contains that OS will be vulnerable.
Your need for anti-spam software depends on the nature of your online activities. Since there are email address "mining programs" that scan the internet 24/7 searching for posted email addresses, the minute that you start posting an email address somewhere on the web, even if it's a members only space, your need for spam protection kicks in.
If you are less than careful with your email addresses, you might look at what anti-spam efforts are offered by your internet service provider at their end, which would mean that you wouldn't actually need to install anything directly onto your computer. To use their software at their end, you'll just need to access the preferences settings available for each of your email addresses that are part of their web-mail system.
I've found that those isp systems, set to medium or high levels of effectiveness, can be fairly stringent, and will occassionaly, or even frequently, keep normal business email from reaching you. I don't think they affect personal email too badly, unless your correspondent is sending the same message to multiple recipients - like a daily diary, or daily joke, in which case the anti-spam system used by their isp, or your isp, might very likely see those messages as spam and not allow them to pass. That's how the isp-based anti-spam systems perceive much business email, since so much of it is not sent as a single message, but as part of a mass mailing.
