Internet seems slow on macbook

When i open safari it's slow to load up my homepage. Is this normal? Also internet browsing seems slow. I have a 20 meg connection.

Hi,
Slow speed is a pretty qualitative measure, so it is difficult to say. The Apple home page is pretty busy, and I think it might trigger Quicktime to load, which might take a few extra seconds. You could try setting your start page to a simpler UK web page or just have Safari start with a blank page.
BBC has a speed test you can try:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7416471.stm
I tried the BBC speed test and I got 1.8 megabits/s over my connection that's nominally 3 megabits/s. I'm pretty far away in Ohio, US.

  • Internet Connection Slow on Macbook Pro (Mid 2010)

All of the sudden, this past week, my internet has been running quite slow on my Macbook Pro.  This problem is with the Macbook itself and not with the internet connection (I have connected to various networks and my other wifi devices run well on them).  I am not experiencing a problem connecting to various networks, but only the internet speed on all my browsers is the issue.
Has anyone experienced this issue before?  Do you have a suggested remedy?
    Thanks for your help.

If you've tried several other browsers i.e Firefox/Chrome then you've done most of the troubleshooting for yourself.
The only other things you can do is try a different computer on your network to rule out the internet for good.
Then test in a new user account on your mac System Preferences > Accounts > New account.
If that fails then perform an Erase and Install:
    Boot to OSX DVD.
Go to Utilities bar, Disk utility.
Erase the Macintosh HD partition and run Mac OSX install.

I have had no problems with my macbook air but for the last few days the internet has slowed right down but this does not seem to be a problem for other members of the household using the same wireless internet. They mostly have Macbook Pro's.Any thoughts?

    Hello,
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
Open Network Utility in Applications>Utilities>Info tab, select Airport/Wifi & what is the Link Speed & are there any Errors/Collisions on the right?

It depends upon how the other machines are connecting to your MBA:
If the the other machines are also using wi-fi, they can connect directly to the wireless access point (router) without going through your MBA
If the other machines are connecting to the MBA using ethernet you can share your wi-fi connection to them

  • Internet problems on my MacBook Pro

I've got a MacBook Pro, which I purchased about 6 months ago. I connect using my home wireless network using WEP. Everything has worked fine until 2 weeks ago.
I'm able to ping websites without any problems, but when I browse websites using any browser, things either slow down dramatically or timeouts occur. I've tried browsing with Safari, Chrome, Firefox & Opera, and noticed the same behavior. The browser seems to spend forever in 'Connecting to...." state. And, it gets progressively worse. For example, when I start up a browser and type a URL, the page usually loads completely. After that, everytime I click a link or load a new URL, the slowdown starts and gets worse each time.
This is extremely frustrating, and although I have several years of experience working with Unix systems, I am not able to figure out why the laptop is behaving in this way or how I should go about debugging it. The results of ifconfig were fairly benign. I don't see any signs of dropped packets.
Any help that the experts on this forum can provide would be deeply and sincerely appreciated.
    Regards,
    Swaroop

One last bit of information. I wrote a Perl script (based on the LWP module) that emulates a browser by "visiting" 10 websites in sequence, like Yahoo, Amazon, EBay, Oracle, Sun, etc. Between each pair of calls, I print the current time, to calculate how long the calls are taking to complete.
I found that this script is able to retrieve the content of all webpages in 1 to 12 seconds, which is not too bad. So, the problem becomes weirder because it seems that internet is slow only when I use a browser. I wonder if there's any common library file(s) that all browsers in Mac OS share.
Anybody with more information about this?
    Regards,
    Swaroop

  • How can an external drive cause my Internet to slow to a crawl and then fail?

I have two WD My Passport Ultra 1 TB USB 3 new drives. One I'm using for Time Machine and one for CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner). I have been trying to use them with my new MacBook Pro retina 13-inch.
For the last few days I've had weird problems trying to connect them via a USB 3 hub. I though the hub was the problem (because things seemed to be fine until I introduced a hub into the equation) and already returned one.
But now I see the same thing happening even without the hub.
It appears that one drive, when connected to a USB 3 port (it doesn't matter which port), even when it's doing nothing (I erased and and removed the CCC task), causes the Internet to slow to a crawl, and then stop. All connectivity ceases.
The instant I unmount and remove the drive the Internet springs back to normal speeds - over wifi about 110 Mbps.
Disk Utility says there are no problems with the disk. So does WD's only diagnostic utility. And the firmware is up-to-date.
The other disk, running Time Machine, seems to have no issues at all.
I guess I will return this drive. It could be subtly defective in some way. But what way? Why would an external USB 3 drive affect the Internet connectivity?
    doug

I came across this post while in search of the answer to the very same question only I am experiencing this problem when connecting to a USB 3.0 hub and nothing else.  The resuling slowdown in my internet speed leaves me hanging intermittently between screens in Safari, sometimes indefinitely.  When I remove the USB cable, normal speeds resume.  Activity Monitor shows no undue load on the CPU.  I did not notice this problem until just recently.  Could this have something to do with the recent OSX patch.
BTW: I am running a 2012 15" MacBook Pro with Retina display.
Anybody have a clue as to what might be going on here?

  • Yosemite slow on Macbook Air

    Help! Seriously....
I updated to Yosemite the other day and since then my Macbook is extremely slow...
It is really annoying, especially because I have no clue what the reason could be.
I would really appreciate if anyone has an idea how to fix this.
Apple doesn´t seem to know the answer! (What a let down...)
Thank you very much for taking your time!
    Some of the problems:
+ The fan is running much more often now
    + MacBook gets very warm
+ Battery drain is extremely high
+ Animations and scrolling inside OS not fluent anymore
I have already tried the following:
    + new install
    + verify disk permissions
    + SMC-Reset
    + PRAM Reset (Cmd+P+R)
Here comes my report, I really hope anyone can help me with that.
I am really disappointed of Apple... What a let down!

Had the same problem, finally realized that the FileVault Encryption was struck at 19%. Speed back up to normal after I disabled FileVault using terminal command - sudo fdesetup diable
To check whether the FileVault is the culprit, go to System Preferences --> Security & Privacy --> FileVault to see if encryption is in progress.. For me the blue bar was less than a quarter with status 'estimating time remaining'..
Then open Terminal and type in: sudo fdesetup disable
It will then ask for the admin password (to be it asked twice), then it was disabled... Back to normal life again..
Here is my terminal log for reference:

  • Internet connection slowdown on Macbook

Over the past few weeks, my internet connection on my Macbook (new 2/08) has become extremely slow, often giving time-out error messages on Safari & Firefox. Previous to this, it was the expected DSL high speed throughput. I have a Cat 5 wired network, and other computers on the network don't have the problem. I've changed the hub to the network on my Mac; still slow. I've repaired privileges and observed CPU, memory, disk and network graphs on the Activity Monitor during internet access without seeing anything that smacks of the problem. Slow at startup and 4 hours later. The Mac acts the same when I'm on the road on a hotel's WiFi, etc. A PC laptop with XP and the same ISP login has no slowdown on my network, so I'm convinced the problem is in the Macbook Anyone experienced this and can give me help? I'm at the point that I'm going to have to quit using my Macbook.

My slow down in my home office is on a wired Cat5 connection, not wireless. Yesterday I had to work from corp offices, and connected both wired and wireless. Both were near instant download from the internet on all the corporate stuff and on my personal email, and web sites I tested which would seem to indicate there's nothing wrong on my Macbook. Yet, when I got home and tested again on my home network, my Mac had the old slow problem, but all the PCs with MSIE were OK. It's a puzzle. Has anyone figured this one out, or am I hallucinating.

  • Internet problems on my macbook pro and ipod touch with camera.

    Hi,
For the last week or so I have been experiencing internet problems with my macbook and iPod touch with camera. I'll be online and clicking different news articles and suddenly the address bar will start to open a link but will not complete it. So what I do is go up to the signal bar and click turn off airport then turn it back on and that will temporarily solve the problem. Same solution on my iPod, I turn off the wifi and turn it back on. It is very frustrating for both devices. I will include as much info as possible. I have a NetGear RangeMax wireless router model WPN824v3. I was wondering if changing the wireless settings on that would solve my problem. I have the channel on 9. Mode on b and g. Security option on WPA-PSK [TKIP] with password. I would be happy for any help with this issue. Also I hope I'm following correct posting protocol. I haven't been on this forum in a while.

    Sig,
Thanks for the advice. I finally tried a solution after doing nothing. LoL. What I did do was change the channel the router was on from 9 to 7. I think I've done something like this in the past when I had slow internet and that worked out well too. I thought that would help and so far so good. Not an interruption so far but we shall see. To the guy or girl who expressed that they had the same problem as me I would try changing the channel of your router like I did. I will monitor the situation and see if it totally solved my problem or not and keep this thread updated. Thanks people

  • Internet runs slow on my Mac mini

My internet runs slow on my Mac mini after I loded the new OS

I sopped by the apple store with my Mac book air.  It worked well.   I took it home still same problem I have two wireless networks Uverse and AirPort Extreme.  My iMac was connected to the Uverse and the MacBook Air and Mac mini was connected to the Airport. When I connect all three to the Uverse everything works well. When I connect any one to the AirPort it is very slow. It worked fine with the old OS but not with the new OS. Is look like problem is with the AirPort Extreme and the new OS.

  • Compressor is slow on Macbook Pro

Is anyone else noticing that compressor runs very slow on the macbook pros. We are using it to compress 22 minute standard def video files to quicktime 7>300k. The compressions run about twice as fast on a G5 comparred to a mac book pro.
I was reading this article and the testers seemed to have the same findings.

Has anyone found out why compressor is so slow on macbook pros and/or how to fix it?
    Thanks!
    Dan

Laptops have fundamentally worse performance than desktops with smiilar specs. This is true on customs, Macs, Dells, HP, alienware, etc. I try not to use my laptop to do anythign demanding because I know I'll be waiting a while. As far as a technical reason, it may be best to keep trying with Apple support. Although I'm sure its similar, I only knos the technical reasons for PCs.
