Internet Server Problems - Many Sites Will Not Connect

I just set up a new iMac, and I cannot connect to many web sites. I also cannot connect to iChat at all. OS X Mail seems to work fine, but that is the only component that works on the Internet without issue.
The symptoms are like this: I can use Safari to connect to some web sites without problem, but others will result in a "Failed to open page" error message: "Safari can't find the server." To complicate maters, some pages will download plain text but no images or page formatting. For example, Yahoo! downloads all the table structure and text, but it will not download any of the images from the page. When I look at the activity report, it says "can't find host" for all the components that did not download. Examples of sites that I cannot browse to at all include:
apple.acuweather.com
www.aim.com (This is probably why I cannot se iChat at all)
www.aol.com
www.monster.com
Examples of pages that download plain text only:
www.amazon.com (for all .gif files I get "can't find host" error message in the Activity Status.
www.yahoo.com (same problem, "can't find host")
www.cnn.com ("can't find host")
I am using a local wireless Internet Service Provider. My AirPort status tells me I am connected just fine, and there are some web pages that download without problem (e.g., most Apple web sites, but not all).
I have three Dell Laptops in the house that I've been running for years, and they have never had any trouble with web or network issues. There is a laptop right next to me on the same desk that I have the new iMac, and it can reach every web site that the iMac cannot.
Please give me your thoughts. It seems that the networking software within this machine (the iMac) cannot resolve certain web aliases, but I don't know what setting to adjust to fix that.

Try using OpenDNS / Free - Basic
Since the problem exists in all your browsers, it could be your ISP.
Question... you have Netscape and IE installed? Do you have a Windows partition?

    You need to power off the modem for 15-30 seconds, then power back up and then connect. The modem is remembering the last connection (your friend).

  • After installing Firefox6 many sites will not finish loading. I click on "stop loading this page" and then click on "reload this page" and the page loads. Also if I disable javascript the page will load.

    After installing Firefox 6 MANY web site will not finish loading. I disabled all add-ons and still have the problem. If I disable javascript, the pages will load. When the page is trying to load, if I hit "stop loading this page" and then hit "reload this page", the page will load; but sometimes I have to do this 2-3 times for the page to finish loading. No problem with these pages using IE8.

    Doing that can cause all kinds of problems because not all servers like such changes, so you can try to reset those prefs on the about:config page.<br />

    You can find the connection settings in Tools > Options > Advanced : Network : Connection
    If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then select "No Proxy" if the default "Use the system proxy settings" setting doesn't work.

  • "The Problem" is IPOD will not connect to windows

    I guess for those people that have not spent the last few days reading these posts I will add that "The Problem" that I am referring to in my previous post is the same one that everyone seems to be having. One of my IPODs was rendered absolutely useless by the new updater. (only one was updated) I believe that the com port on the IPOD is being "jammed" by the software update. I had never updated before and my two IPODS have worked flawlessly up to now. I believe that this fix will be the best for me because it basically cleans it back to factory state. I have read some old posts and feel that some of the older updaters have killed some IPODS in the past. I would suggest that if you decide to follow my previous post and restore. That you go back to the oldest updater that will provide all the functionality that you actually use. "If you do not feel comfortable taking the IPOD apart I am sure there are places that will do this for you.

  • Can anyone help - my mail on my ipad will not connect to the server. My internet access is fine. How can I get my email to connect to the server?

    My ipad will not connect tot he server when trying to access my mail. This has been happening since last Sunday. Some have said it is due to the latest software update. I am able to connect to the internet.
    I am not having this issue on iPhone.
    I checked all the settings, the wireless router in my house and at work.
    I have completed a hard reset of the device.
    I had our IT guy at work look at it.
    He said to contact Apple....
    Any thoughts?

    Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.     Basic troubleshooting steps oultlined in the User Guide are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new device.
    You need to go through all steps in succession until your problem is solved.  If going through ALL these steps fails to resolve your issue, then you'll need to bring your phone into Apple for evaluation and possible replacement.

    Try the following:
    1. Turn router off for 30 seconds and on again
    2. Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    3. Reset iPad; hold the Sleep and Home button down until you see the Apple Logo

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.

    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

    Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

    Hello, everyone, I have one desktop hooked up to a BEFW11S$ router. I also have another desktop and a notebook running off of it. The main one, as well as the other desktop work perfectly fine, while the other desktop is just a  bit on the slow side, but the laptop, which says it is connected will not connect to any form of internet, whether it be IE or MSN. I'm not sure, but I think the connection between the computers needs re-establishing. Though I have no idea how to go about doing this... Any help? T.T

    Hi… I would suggest you to delete preferred wireless networks on your wireless laptop, and then try to reconnect to the wireless network. Also check what ip address you are getting, is it a valid ip address from the router. Try deleting cookies in internet explorer. Then check the connection. You cannot change anything on the router because other two computers are working fine.
