Internet Sharing causes iChat errors?

I've just finished installing Leopard on my mother's iMac and I'm trying to test out the screen sharing feature of iChat. However I keep getting an error after accepting my request to share, that my MBP isn't responding to her iMac's acceptance. Could this be caused by the fact that my MBP is connected to the web and trying to use iChat via Internet Sharing?
It won't be for a couple of days before I can have a dedicated distinct internet connection to test it.

Yes.
Internet Sharing can not be On in Leopard.
This is because iChat "looks" as it were in both the connection to the internet via the other computer and it's Own IP form the routing device. (Sees two networks).
Other forms of two networks or Subnets also do not work.
Two DHCP server on the Same LAN when a Modem that Routes and a router are both doing DHCP.
Being connected to the same router with Wireless and Ethernet.
Connecting to a Neighbour's WiFi LAN and your own Ethernet LAN will do it.
Running Parallels in Leopard with it having the two VPNs it create in System Preferences > Network Active and sharing the Mac's IP that way. (Turn Both Off)
Certain MIMO wireless devices can cause the same effect due to the way they use the Channel the router is set to.

  • USB modem and Internet Sharing causes system to hang.

First my setup. I have a Mac mini (early 2009) running 10.7.2 connected to the Internet using a Sony Ericsson W910 as a USB modem. I am using Internet sharing via Ethernet to a 1st generation (n) AirPort Extreme to give Wi-Fi to other devices (iPhone, Xbox 360, PS3 etc).
Now the problem: When Internet Sharing is on regardless of what interfaces are used (Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth PAN etc) eventually—that word is key—my system will hang. Internet will be unavailable to every device and my Mac itself (but they will still be connected to Wi-Fi) and any app that is running willbeachball. Any app I launch—or try to—will also beachball. I've tried leaving it to see if it will resolve itself —even overnight—but it always requires a hard reset.
The eventually part. I haven't figured out what causes this but I have an idea which I'll explain later. The times this happens is totally random. It has gone days with  no problems and other times has happened minutes apart. Usually it's about every 12-24 hours.
It's definitely Internet Sharing which is causing this because when I turn it off I don't have any problems. I've tried every configuration. Only sharing via my mini's Wi-Fi or Ethernet, leaving the AirPort out etc. As soon as I turn on Internet Sharing I've started a countdown to a hang.
On inspecting the Console the last messages before a hang without fail are always:
    12/12/2011 06:31:07.000 kernel: 80       80 AppleUSBCDCECMData: getOutputBuffer - Output buffer pool empty
    12/12/2011 06:31:07.000 kernel: 80       66 AppleUSBCDCECMData: USBTransmitPacket - Output buffer unavailable
    12/12/2011 06:58:58.312 com.apple.usbmuxd: _handle_timer Fish out of water!!!
Repeated hundreds of times. Quick Googling indicates that AppleUSBCDCECMData is a USB driver. Apparently I have version 4.1.15 which appears to be the latest.
I'm aware this is a rare configuration but I believe it affects every USB not just this particular phone.
Is anybody else experiencing this or knows a way to fix it?
    Thanks.

    Thanks Barry.
The hub is on its way to the manufacturer for after sales service...
But the issue with AirPort remains the same, even after resetting SMC.
    Some clarification:
    * It happens just after computer wakes up from sleep. Restarting solves the problem and the issue doesn't arise until computer goes standby again.
    * The whole WiFi card becomes unresponsive. It is not only the Turn Off button, but the whole functionality is stopped. The card can not be activated/deactivated and it doesn't connect to any network. If it is used for internet sharing, clients are unable to connect.

  • Mac - Xbox, internet sharing, DNS server error

    Hi,
I have internet sharing enabled between my airport and the built-in ethernet on my mac. I have been using this to access XBox Live for several days, and it has been working with a moderate NAT. Now I am having problems with my DNS server resolving the names of the Xbox Live servers; this has happened once before, and I got it to work by resetting my router, then switching the xbox DNS settings to automatic and back to manual, and it started working again. This time I have been messing with settings for an hour, and I am still stuck with DNS issues. Any ideas? Why would it work one day and the next stop working? I have reset the router several times, and tried manually entering ethernet settings in the system preferences>network, and now I'm back with what had worked before; automatic on my mac, and assigned on my xbox.

replying to myself since it's working now, but I'm not exactly sure why or how. The only thing I did was to turn off internet sharing and turn it back on. Viola, moderate nat is my only problem, which I don't care about. Still would like to know why this keeps happening. All the settings are the same as they've been before when my xbox live worked.

  • Internet Sharing service may cause iChat problems

Here are some good news: After months of frustration I finally found the cause for my iChat audio/video connection problems.
    The symptoms were as follows:
When my MacBook Pro was connected to the wireless router (Time Capsule) via AirPort, I wasn't able to establish an audio or video connection. When I tried for example to connect to one of Apple's test accounts appleu3test01, appleu3test02 or appleu3test03, I always ended up with the famous Errors 7 or 8.
However, if I connected my computer to the Time Capsule via Ethernet (LAN) cable directly, the iChat connection worked.
So, why didn't it work via AirPort?
It turned out that the reason for my problem was the activated Internet Sharing service (System Preferences > Sharing > Internet Sharing). As soon as I deactivated Internet Sharing, iChat audio/video connections via AirPort worked like a charm.
Interestingly, after switching Internet Sharing back on it still worked until I set my computer to sleep mode. After waking up again with Internet Sharing still activated it no longer worked.
I have now permanently deactivated Internet Sharing and everything is fine.
Hope this helps others to solve their iChat connection problem.

If iChat can't do all or part of what it is supposed to do with Internet Sharing on, WHY DOESN'T EITHER THE OS OR ICHAT SAY SO? I would be nice if the problem were fixed (although it looks like the problem has been open for years), but in the meantime, it would be nice for the uninitiated to be given a clue regarding the non-obvious.
"There was a communication error during your Chat. Did not receive a response from ..."
    There sure was!

  • Error message about firewall and internet sharing

hello all i have a question regarding the use of firewall and internet sharing.
I have a PMG5 connected to internet through Airport. I've linked an Xbox 360 via the built-in ethernet port in order to access Xbox Live. I had to open specific UDP ports on the OS X firewall but it now works fine. However, in the Sharing Preference Pane, Internet Tab, i still get an error message saying that my Internet Sharing is disturbed by the settings of the firewall and sharing services, it says that i did not activate "personal web sharing" in the first two tabs...but i DID ! And there's no way to get rid of this error message.
I know I know some may consider it's not a real problem because it's just an error message while the connection actually works fine but well, I tend to hate error messages when they're not supposed to show up. So if anyone know the answer, thanks in advance...
    Good day to everyone
    Vince, Paris...

sorry about the delay in replying, was kinda busy
well trashing the pref files was useless and i tried with another user, same thing. As for the second opinion, the problem was not about which port was used cause as i said the connection sharing works fine and anyway it was the correct port that was checked, it's just that i get an error message while there is no apparent error and everything works fine, i'm told that personal web sharing is not enabled but it is...
Anyway as i said, it's probably not a real matter, as long as it works...which brings me to another thing. I've created a special protocol in the firewall to enable a proper dialog with the xbox. it's basically the same thing you do for ichat AV when you have video connection problems, you track down the concerned UDP port using terminal, you allow traffic and all... The protocol for the xbox worked great for some days, but now it seems it's not enough, the game set keeps trying on another port and i constantly have to update the protocol or deactivate the firewall...and enabling back all UDP traffic is not enough to solve it.
In a way i think everything is linked, the initial error message when everything was fine and the current trouble. Any idea?
    thanks
    Vince

  • IChat Error (Video, Audio, and Screen Sharing)

I received a Black Macbook for Christmas, and have not had any problems with it until today. Yesterday I installed 2GB of Kingston RAM that I ordered online from Newegg, and today I cannot do anything in iChat besides chat. Whenever I attempt to start an audio chat, video chat, or screen sharing, I recieve an error.
"There was a communication error during your chat."
"______ cancelled the connection. You can send details about this problem to Apple to help improve future versions of iChat"
I've tried it with 3 different people and it gives me the same error.
Last week I was video chatting and screen sharing fine with the same people.
I don't see how it would affect it but is there any chance it was caused by the RAM? Other than that I have had no problems at all. :\
    Thanks in advance. ^_^

    I fixed the problem. ^_^
If anyone else has this problem, it might be caused by internet sharing. I had internet sharing setup with my 360, as soon as I cut that off it worked fine.

  • IChat and Internet Sharing conflict

It seems that if I turn on Internet Sharing then I cannot make a Video connection.
I have tested this with iChat Test ([email protected]) and it is a solid bug.
    Peter

    Update.
It has been known for a long time that iChat does not like it if it can see two networks.
    Some versions are:
Being connected by WiFi and Ethernet to the same router.
A firewire link to another computer.
Two DHCP Servers on a LAN.
VPN networks (Such as created by Parallels)
Apps like Parallels sharing the Mac's IP
And therefore turning on Internet Sharing falls into this area.
It is just more clear in Leopard that this is the issue in some cases.
Sorting out a LAN can be the first step in sorting issues around this area.

  • IChat and Internet Sharing

Ok, so I know this is a "feature" and not a bug. When Internet Sharing is turned on audio and video chat does not work.
It is frustrating that this problem has existed for so long and Apple has even acknowledged it in a tech note(Article: TA25128).
What I don't understand is if this isn't easily fixed why at the very least does ichat not check for this and at least popup a warning that internet sharing is turned on and voice/video chat will not work when it is turned on???

    Hi,
    I understand the issue.
However I feel an answer would drift off into Speculation about Apple or an Apple Product which is against the Terms of Use of these boards.
    There is no work-around.
    I can only suggest this

    Hi Maverick .
You can find corrupted blocks with query on V$DATABASE_BLOCK_CORRUPTION
select *  from V$DATABASE_BLOCK_CORRUPTIONif you have full backup(s) then you can use block media recovery with RMAN
    run
    BACKUP VALIDATE DATABASE;
    BLOCKRECOVER CORRUPTION LIST;
} if you are using Oracle Database 11g, you can use recovery advisor like as
advise failure all; and see : http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B28359_01/backup.111/b28273/rcmsynta033.htm#CHDEBHBI

  • Internet sharing seems to conflict with ichat video and theatre

I don't use a base station. I broadcast wifi from my imac using internet sharing. With this option enabled, ichat 4.0 video and theatre will not work on my machine

Yes, I can confirm that this is a solid bug and as such I have logged it on Apple's Bug Reporter.
Now in 10.4.x we could open some ports but this is now hidden from the user, which may be agood thing as long as it works. Lets hope its fixed in 10.5.1

  • Internet Sharing - "Unable to join the network" error

    Hi,
I have recently enabled internet sharing from my iMac to provide internet access for my iPad. My iMac has a working ethernet connection and I successfully set up the internet sharing (shared via Wi-Fi) so that the network is recognised by my  iPad. However, when I attempt to connect to the network from the iPad I get the error, "Unable to join the network <name-of-my-imac>". To make things really simple, I disabled the security for the network so that no passoword is required. Still the iPad won't connect. Everything seems to be alright from the iMac's end, except that my PC laptop also has difficulty gaining internet access through the network. It will connect, but states "no internet connection".
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Not a lot of support seems to be avaible for this topic.
I am running OS X 10.8.2 on the iMac and iOS 6.1.3 on the iPad.

Look at iOS Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections  http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398

Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
