Internet Sharing Help

Here is my dilemma.
I have HughesNet which has a very slow connection and limited data. (Ethernet)
I also have my tethered iPhone which has a surprisingly fast connection and very limited data. (USB)
What I want to do is use my HughesNet connection on my Mac Mini as its primary internet connection. I then want to share my iPhone's connection using the Internet Sharing through the Mac Mini's Airport.
Currently I have the Ethernet as my primary internet connection and the iPhone as my secondary connection. In Internet Sharing, I have the "Share your connection from:" field set to USB, "To computers using:" Airport checked.
When I connect to the specified shared wireless connection on my MBP, I get a good connection to the Mac Mini but have no connection to the internet.
Anyone have any suggestions? Sorry if I explained this poorly, let me know if you have any questions.

Do I need to manually configure the ethernet adapter through the settings, or if it is done automatically, how?
It should be set to DHCP, iirc, on the PB, and will automatically hand out the right IP range to the PS3 when Internet Sharing is on.
Not quite sure how it works on the PS3, but it needs to either "Join" the PB's Network, and/or have it's Gateway/Router set to the PB's IP.
Also, what would the DNS servers be when configuring the PS3?
Not 100% certain, but i believe it will use whatever DNS settings the PB uses... if you need to put in something you could try OpenDNS'...

  • Internet Sharing Help Needed!

Hi, I have just connected my Mac to an ethernet cable going to my router, but what I'm trying to do is use internet sharing, and it says internet sharing is on and everything! But then I go to my iPad the network is there but it says it is connecting but it's not it just has the spinning circle and then on the black bar on the top right it says I have internet but I don't! Please help me!

  • 10.4.6 broke my Internet Sharing HELP!

    Hi There
I just updated my HOST computer - a G5 dual 2.0g - from OS 10.4.7 to 10.4.8. I previously connected a PowerBook G4 1.25g to the above HOST via FIREWIRE and AIRPORT under 10.4.7 and both worked perfectly.
    After updating it doesn't work!
Under NETWORK it says 'You are connected to the internet with a IP Address of etc'. It also says I'm connected via AIRPORT as well.
I can fileshare fine. But NO INTERNET CONNECTION at all. Safari just hangs and says the server is not responding. It doesn't say YOU ARE NOT CONNECTED to the internet, as I would expect. So the PowerBook thinks it is connected. Firewalls are turned off on both machine and have repaired permissions and restarted etc.
    Can anybody help?

    Hi all
Just fixed it myself. I realised that I had to share
FROM my built in ETHERNET to FIREWIRE / AIRPORT. I
had it set up to share FROM FIREWIRE as well!
    Doh!
Still maybe this will help someone else...
Hi..what does that mean ..sharing both ways . How do you do that ? I'm ,of course, a Newbie at all of this stuff..so bear with my supid questions please. Thanks Dagny

  • Help with LTE and Internet Sharing for BUIlD Lumia...

    Nokia,
I received the Lumia 920 when I was at BUILD 2 weeks ago. I followed the instructions and the phone mostly works on AT&T. I had a 900 so I assumed my LTE and Internet Sharing plan would easily transfer. Unfortunately that does not seem to be the case. I called AT&T gave them my IMEI number but it's not in their system and is not recognized as a Lumia 920. Because this is not an "AT&T phone" they wouldn't do much more to help. My data connection only ever shows 4G, never LTE as my 900 does and I cannot enable Internet Sharing even though it's on my data plan. I believe this is all controlled by the IMEI number.
Is there anything Nokia can do to help us? I can't imagine I'm the only one having this problem! I'm going to try again to see if I can get the issue escalated and maybe they can force the IMEI number to be recognized as a 920.
    Thanks!

Sorry I never came back to update. The fix, as has been noted already, is to make sure AT&T has your IMEI as another 920 or your old 900 so that you get LTE (which appears as "4G"). Then, in the Nokia Access Point config setting (under System Config), make sure LTE2 is selected, then install an additional keyboard (I tried both Spanish and Chinese). This will force an OTA update that seems to enable Internet Sharing. I had to redo it a second time when I updated my Nokia Access Point app last week, but I just re-installed a NEW keyboard and got Internet Sharing back. It hasn't gone away since, contrary to what others have experienced. For more info (and where I found the fix) see this XDA thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1971997

  • Help!  Stupid Internet sharing.

So I turned on Internet sharing stupidly. And I want to connect to a normal router and be able to search for wifi signals. I have searched through the boards and seen a couple people post this question but no answers. This computer is on tiger and is a MacBook. Help me. It says Internet sharing is off but on the airport icon it has an up arrow. Thanks.

    Hi Alexander,
Most likely you need to trash these files, reboot, & setup Airport & Sharing again...

  • Help with Firewall and Internet Sharing

I’m trying to use my Mac Mini with an Airport Extreme card, which is connected to the internet using Siemens Speedstream 4100 DSL modem, for Internet Sharing with a Windows (work) laptop.
So, in the Sharing preferences panel:
Share connection from: Built in Ethernet
    To computers using: Airport
    I get the warning message:
Other settings may interfere with Internet Sharing.
The ‘More Info’ button gives the popup message:
Your firewall settings will prevent computers sharing your internet connection from browsing the web. Enable Personal Web Sharing in the Services pane to allow computers sharing your connection to browse the web.
I do that, turn the Airport card on, and the laptop can see the network, but can’t connect.
If I turn the Firewall off, then I can connect fine, but then I don’t have a Firewall. Isn’t that risky if I’m using DSL? How can I do the internet sharing and still protect my computer?
I realize I could buy a router with a built-in firewall, but isn’t there a way to set up the system using what I have?

Oh, and when you say the PC can't connect, could that just mean it can't browse?
On the PC, put the IP of the Mac in DNS servers, or...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.22
Well, I'm unable to set the DNS server addresses, as this is a work computer and I don't have the administrative privileges.
How bad is it to just turn the Firewall on the Mac off when I want to use the connection?

  • Help with using internet sharing on my MacBook Pro with an old mac mini

I have an old mini osx 10.4.11 with no wifi.  My much newer MacBookPro osx10.6.7 can't seem to share it's internet connection between it and the mini via ethernet cable.  I'm using the MacBook airport to connect to my SMC router.
The DHCP on the mini has an IP, and it seems correct.  But, I can't get a browser to connect.  Can someone suggest a way to troubleshoot?

That is the more difficult of the forms of Internet sharing possible on a Mac. Of course the easiest thing to do is put out US$100 and just get an AirPort Express and connect the mini to the Express' Ethernet port. The mini would have the fastest connection that your router puts out with none of the hassles of connecting and disconnecting when you want to leave with the MacBook.
Read over my last comment in this thread for the configuration of wi-fi to Ethernet. Just substitute the mini for the XBox.

  • Internet sharing suddenly stopped working - please help!

I have been sharing my internet for weeks from my computer but this morning it suddenly stopped working. I've tried changing the password, changing the channel number, and changing the Network name to a simple one, but it is all not working Apparently the authentication server is not responding? How can I fix that?

I'm having the same problem. I had internet sharing set up on my iMac from Ethernet via AirPort, and received quite well on my MacBook and iPod Touch, and then one day, it just stopped working. I'm assuming that some update or other caused this problem, but I have no idea which (I mostly use the internet on my desktop machine, so it may have been several days before I noticed the problem). I've tried with-and-without a password, and also tried sharing from my MacBook to the iMac and iPod Touch, and I can't get any bandwidth (I can connect to the 802.11 network that I create, but I can't get any internet through it).

  • Trying to connect a replay to my MBP using internet sharing-need help

i'm trying to get my replay system connected to the internet thru my MBP. the replay has a nic and of course, the MBP has the airport card. i've turned on internet sharing from my airport to the ethernet. however, the replay can't seem to connect to the net. i do not have access to the router to get any settings. i do the routers ip address, the MBP's ip address, and i think i have the correct dns servers for the isp here. i can manually enter the above info but i'm not entirely sure what goes where. do i treat the MBP as the router in this situation? does anyone have any experience with this? thx.

  • I try to use "internet sharing" with my iphone, ipod, iPad, etc. and none of them work. Any step by step ways to help? Or advice?

I researched various youtube videos, websites, etc. and none of them work. Are other apple products really not compatible?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Open System Preferences > Sharing > Internet Sharing, and turn it off by unmarking Internet Sharing in the System Preferences sidebar. Then, make sure you are connecting the Mac to the Internet by Ethernet or FireWire, and then, share your Internet connection by Wi-Fi by marking Wi-Fi. Finally, tick Internet Sharing in the sidebar.
In your devices, open Settings > Wi-Fi, and select your MacBook's connection. You can't use Bluetooth to share the connection

  • Help with my mac's internet sharing?

Hi, recently, my mac's internet sharing has a bit of a problem, like when i turn on the internet sharing, my ipod will have the internet connection bar thing at the top, but i wont be able to connect to the internet. The thing is when i restart my mac, the internet sharing will be fine again. If i send it to the apple store, would they still fix my mac? is still under apple care?
    Thanks

If you didn't buy AppleCare then I do not believe you have coverage.  If that happens again, instead of restarting your computer try to turn off then on the internet sharing and see if that fixes your problem.

  • Remote App and Internet Sharing Problem

Ok so basically heres the setup we have, we have one of the recent iMacs, a Macbook, and 3 PC's, one running XP and the other 2 Vista. All of these computers are on a network together. All our music is on one of the Vista PC's, called "SERVER". This PC is connected to the speaker system, so is what we use for music.
Now I've been trying to use an iPod Touch we have (most recent firmware 2.2, and most recent Remote app version.) and the remote app to control the itunes on this PC. This is not an issue when the iPod is connected to the Wifi the router itself provides (its one of those wireless routers), but when I switch the Wifi the iPod is using to the Wifi provided by the iMac using internet sharing, it suddenly can't find the library anymore. Internet (safari) still works fine from the ipod when connected to this Wifi point.
My guess is that because the iMac using internet sharing seems to act more like a router than a wireless access point (allocating its own IP adresses ect..), the iPod thinks its on a different wireless network, and thus cant see the itunes library. Obviously the iMac is connected to the router directly by ethernet, if I hadnt mentioned that.
So, my question is, can I fix this ?
Is there any way to make the internet sharing mac behave like a wireless access point and not like a router ?
    Help would be much appreciated.
    Thankyou.

asuming you mean internet sharing as in you connect adhoc to 1 computer using wifi and the rest of the network is wired
problems is the middle name of adhoc wifi though cause everybody problems imho
and wifi routers are soo cheap most people don't bother
even if internet sharing is used remote app should still work if not connecting adhoc at least it's working for me right now
with a setup of many computers 1 wifi router
1 computer sharing internet using an usb 3g modem
remote app works with all my computers and my appletv

  • Airport Express, Leopard and Internet Sharing

I have my internet connection running directly to my iMac's ethernet connection and I use the Internet Sharing option to share my connection with computers. I had been using my Airport Express just to connect to my iMac for Airtunes. My Airport Express has stopped working and is not located unless I shut off Internet Sharing, but if I turn that off, it will not let me set the Airport Express to connect to an existing network - I guess because the network does not exist because I shut it off to configure the Airport Express. This is driving me crazy - any thoughts?

Interestingly, it works again. To initially configure the Airport Express, I had to shut off internet sharing. I configured the Airport Express (I did a hard reset to clear everything out) using the Airport Utility and set it to join an existing network. Of course my network did not show up since I had shut internet sharing off, but I manually typed in the name and password that I had already set for the internet sharing. I also put in a name and password for the base station, but this isn't required.
Then I hit update and right when it says that the configuration has been changed and it is waiting for the Airport Express to restart, I turned internet sharing back on. I waited and after flashing yellow for a while it connected. I unplugged it and plugged it back in to make sure it was fully configured and it works. I have found in the past the unplugging and plugging back in solves a lot of problems too.
Now that it is all set up, I can see and reconfigure the Airport Express in the Airport Utility even when internet sharing is on.
    Hope this helps.
