Internet Sharing service may cause iChat problems

Here are some good news: After months of frustration I finally found the cause for my iChat audio/video connection problems.
The symptoms were as follows:
When my MacBook Pro was connected to the wireless router (Time Capsule) via AirPort, I wasn't able to establish an audio or video connection. When I tried for example to connect to one of Apple's test accounts appleu3test01, appleu3test02 or appleu3test03, I always ended up with the famous Errors 7 or 8.
However, if I connected my computer to the Time Capsule via Ethernet (LAN) cable directly, the iChat connection worked.
So, why didn't it work via AirPort?
It turned out that the reason for my problem was the activated Internet Sharing service (System Preferences > Sharing > Internet Sharing). As soon as I deactivated Internet Sharing, iChat audio/video connections via AirPort worked like a charm.
Interestingly, after switching Internet Sharing back on it still worked until I set my computer to sleep mode. After waking up again with Internet Sharing still activated it no longer worked.
I have now permanently deactivated Internet Sharing and everything is fine.
Hope this helps others to solve their iChat connection problem.

If iChat can't do all or part of what it is supposed to do with Internet Sharing on, WHY DOESN'T EITHER THE OS OR ICHAT SAY SO? I would be nice if the problem were fixed (although it looks like the problem has been open for years), but in the meantime, it would be nice for the uninitiated to be given a clue regarding the non-obvious.
"There was a communication error during your Chat. Did not receive a response from ..."
There sure was!

  • Firefox 18 on OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard Macbook Pro May Cause NVIDIA Problems

I upgraded my Macbook Pro to Firefox 18 on OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard on Friday afternoon. My computer froze while I was using Firefox on Saturday. It froze while I was switching windows within Firefox on Sunday. It froze when I was scrolling a Firefox window this morning. I've checked the kernel log, and each time the computer froze I got "NVDA(OpenGL): Channel exception! exception type = 0xd = GR: SW Notify Error" and some related NVIDIA messages.
The rest of my computer still works. I was able to ssh into it and have it play sounds. It's just the screen that was having trouble. That's what you would expect if your video card is freaking out.
I don't know for sure that Firefox is causing this, but it's rather suspicious. It's the only thing I've changed on my system in the last few days.
If you want to check your kernel log, open the Applications folder, open the Utilities folder, and then open Console. Click on All Messages under DATABASE SEARCHES and search for NVDA.

Unfortunately, the program they recommend doesn't work on Snow Leopard, the version of Flash that seems to be an issue is a really old one, I've already installed the patch from Apple, and I've had my motherboard and graphics card replaced once already. Thanks for digging, though!

  • Shared Services(11.x) installation problem

    hi
on our dev environment we have uninstalled all the hyperion(9.2.x) components and have tried to install the hss of the new version(11x).But we are unable to install as its default taking the previous HSS schema(which has already been deleted).
So please let me know the locations(Registry also) where we can delete those entries(Prior hss(9.2.x)) such that we can install the newer version without any issues.
    thanks in advance
    cheers

    Hi,
Remove anything under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Hyperion Solutions in the registry.
Check for a file called vpd.properties which will usually be in C:\windows < rename this file to something else, this is usually what stops people installing Version 11 if they had a previous release on the machine.
There may be some environment variables you want to remove though this can usually be left e.g. HYPERION_HOME, ARBORPATH
    Cheers

  • USB modem and Internet Sharing causes system to hang.

First my setup. I have a Mac mini (early 2009) running 10.7.2 connected to the Internet using a Sony Ericsson W910 as a USB modem. I am using Internet sharing via Ethernet to a 1st generation (n) AirPort Extreme to give Wi-Fi to other devices (iPhone, Xbox 360, PS3 etc).
Now the problem: When Internet Sharing is on regardless of what interfaces are used (Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth PAN etc) eventually—that word is key—my system will hang. Internet will be unavailable to every device and my Mac itself (but they will still be connected to Wi-Fi) and any app that is running willbeachball. Any app I launch—or try to—will also beachball. I've tried leaving it to see if it will resolve itself —even overnight—but it always requires a hard reset.
The eventually part. I haven't figured out what causes this but I have an idea which I'll explain later. The times this happens is totally random. It has gone days with  no problems and other times has happened minutes apart. Usually it's about every 12-24 hours.
It's definitely Internet Sharing which is causing this because when I turn it off I don't have any problems. I've tried every configuration. Only sharing via my mini's Wi-Fi or Ethernet, leaving the AirPort out etc. As soon as I turn on Internet Sharing I've started a countdown to a hang.
On inspecting the Console the last messages before a hang without fail are always:
    12/12/2011 06:31:07.000 kernel: 80       80 AppleUSBCDCECMData: getOutputBuffer - Output buffer pool empty
    12/12/2011 06:31:07.000 kernel: 80       66 AppleUSBCDCECMData: USBTransmitPacket - Output buffer unavailable
    12/12/2011 06:58:58.312 com.apple.usbmuxd: _handle_timer Fish out of water!!!
Repeated hundreds of times. Quick Googling indicates that AppleUSBCDCECMData is a USB driver. Apparently I have version 4.1.15 which appears to be the latest.
I'm aware this is a rare configuration but I believe it affects every USB not just this particular phone.
Is anybody else experiencing this or knows a way to fix it?
    Thanks.

    Thanks Barry.
The hub is on its way to the manufacturer for after sales service...
But the issue with AirPort remains the same, even after resetting SMC.
    Some clarification:
    * It happens just after computer wakes up from sleep. Restarting solves the problem and the issue doesn't arise until computer goes standby again.
    * The whole WiFi card becomes unresponsive. It is not only the Turn Off button, but the whole functionality is stopped. The card can not be activated/deactivated and it doesn't connect to any network. If it is used for internet sharing, clients are unable to connect.

  • Nokia Lumia - Internet Sharing

Hello all, I am using a Nokia Lumia 800 with Vodafone India 3G connections. However, i am unable to use the internet sharing feature on my phone. My computer shows a limited access to it. The phone internet is working fine but cant use the same on the laptop. My phone is updated and I have also installed the Network Setup from Nokia Store. However, it does not detect any settings too. Any help will be very highly appreciated. Nitin Kanodia

I have a nokia lumia 635.  It was an upgrade from 521.  I am running through the straighttalk prepaid service.  The 521 worked perfectly with internet sharing and I had no problems.  Now I can't connect to the service.  When I inquired about this problem with straighttalk they claim that they don't support it.
I'm quite confused how it could work perfectly on an older model and not work within 30 days.  If there is any help out there, I could use it!!
I have noticed however that this phone is now LTE instead of 4G.  If that is a factor that may be causing the problem, I'd like to know, and maybe see if that can be adjusted in order to allow access to this sharing option.
    Thanking you in advance,
    Debb

  • Essbase registration to Shared Services failed - Hyp 11.1.1.3 on 2 Win XP

    Hi All,
I have Hyperion 11.1.1.3 installation on two XP Pro machines. Pure system, with no global policies, firewalls, etc. My users are in Administrators group. Computers are not in any domain also.
On first server (called HypTSerwer1) there is: Foundation (Shared Services Web Application and OpenLDAP Service)
On second server (called HypTSerwer3) there are: Oracle DB (10R2) + Essbase Services Server 32-bit
I've configured Shared Services, I can log as admin to Shared Services Console without any problem. Validation report contains all greens.
But when I try to configure HypTSerwer3 (essbase) I get: Register with Shared Services Failed. Validation report contains one failure in Hyperion Foundation (
EXT: External Authentication Check Native Directory external authentication provider configuration
    Error: Provider is not reachable
Recommended Action: Check Shared Services Configuration
)(OpenLDAP is green and runs fine)
    In HypTSerwer3 in C:\Hyperion\logs\config\SharedServices_Security_Client.txt I found:

The part connect to  at 28089* looks strange for me, as it sugests, that there is no server name, only port.
I really don't know what to do next. I reinstalled it many times, checked if all services are running. Deployed it with Tomcat or WebLogic 9.2. And always with the same result. When I install everything in only one machine, than it is working fine.
Thanks for any help or suggestion.

Just out of interest why have you used OAS as it is pretty much dead product now and is not used in future releases.
Anyway I am not sure why you have closed ports between those servers, you will end up spending a lot of time trying to open all the required ports between the servers.
Can you not get all the ports open for a time just to check it definitely is a ports issue.
It is probably also worth checking the following spreadsheet out - http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/bi-foundation/epm-components-communications-fd-11-128629.xls
It highlights the ports used in communication.
    Cheers

  • Internet sharing over wireless

Didn't see anyone post this but is anyone else having problems with Internet Sharing over wireless?
Trying to have the macbook connect to the iMac over wireless and use the iMac's wired internet connection. On the iMac, the Airport card is on, and in network preferences, internet sharing is turned on. However, the options for sharing over wireless is grayed out and I can't get into those options to customize it. On the macbook, it doesn't see it in the available networks list to connect.
Am I missing something? Do I need to "create a network" on the imac now? I didn't have to do this in 10.4.10

After much consternation and countless trials I finally have everything back up and working. Here is what I did finally to get it to work. (Note that I am not a network configuration expert - I am only reporting exactly how I have it configured and it works without complaint).
    1. I trashed my \Library\Preferences\System Preferences folder and restarted my Mac since I had updated from 10.4 and I wanted to start from a fresh set of preferences. ( I backed up that folder separately)
    2. I opened the Network Preference pane and configured my Ethernet connection (connected to my external AirPort Express which I am using as a wireless router to my other computers) as follows:
    -Configure: Using DHCP
    -IP Address: 192.168.0.197
    -Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    -Router: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server: 192.168.0.1 (grayed out and so I am not sure what this means)
I set these settings by clicking on the Advanced button.
Under the TCP/IP tab I had chosen:
    - Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
(This set the IPv4 Address, Subnet mask and Router)
    - Configure IPv6: Automatically
    3. On the Sharing Preference pane, I configured the following:
-Share your connection from: Novatel Wireless EXPD (because I have a 3G wireless connection; otherwise I would have chosen the standard Internet connection)
    -To computers using: "Ethernet"
And then I turned on the Internet Sharing Service and confirmed in the pop-up dialog that I wanted to share my Internet connection.
    4. Using Airport Utility, I configured the Airport Express by first clicking the Internet button to show the Internet Connection page and set the following:
    - Connect Using: Ethernet
    - Configure IPv4: Manually
    - IP Address: 192.168.0.179
    - Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    - Router Address: 192.168.0.1
    - DNS Server: 192.168.0.1
    - Ethernet Wan Port: Automatic (Default)
    - Connection Sharing: Off (Bridge)
I also configured my Base Station and Wireless with names and Passwords.
I then clicked Update in AirPort Utility and after it restarted everything magically worked!
I think that the problem lay with my original IPv4 settings where I had chosen DHCP rather than Manually hoping that everything would automatically be set as it had worked previously. The clue was that on my MacBook Pro I noticed that the DHCP was not enabled when connected to the AirPort Express. Even my iPod Touch is now connected to the Internet!
If anyone can explain all of this I would appreciate it.

  • Can switching from CRT to LCD monitors cause system problems?

My 9.1 locks up periodically (but the cursor still moves) since I replaced two 20" CRT monitors with two Samsung 19" LCD monitors. Could this affect the performance of my machine? I've tried everything else to address the freeze problem but recall the issue started when I installed the LCD monitors. Anything I can do?

    Studedot,
You may have issues with the amount of video memory depending on the resolutions of the new LCD screens.
I find LCD screens go up to insane resolutions, way more than the corresponding size CRT monitor, ie. a 17in Dell LCD monitor with higher resolution than a 21in CRT.
It shouldn't cause crashes or freezes, but may cause -redraw problems when closing / moving windows in 2D and playing 3D games.

    Hi John,
    Thanks again for your reply.
My EAS, Essbase Server are all working fine on Vista 64bit.
Now, I've removed Oracle XE and installed Oracle 10g standard database. And I tried to configure Planning again, but I'm still getting the same error. :-(
    Some IndexOutOfBoundsException. Kindly HELP!

  • EPM 11.1.1.3 Shared Services and Registration

    Hi all,
    I installed EPM 11.1.1..3 on a windows 2003 server
Install is ok. I then used config tool to configure repositories (Oracle 10g) , deploy ( Websphere 6.1) and register with shared services :
Here is my issue : I can log to shared services but I cannot create any application group : log says I try to add a duplicate name ( tried several times with different names , still same error ) , I cannot provision anything for user admin ( shared services console says no application is available or insufficient rights)
During configuration for eas, planning... , database connections where ok, deployment ok but they all failed the registration with shared services. Log says there is an oracle error 1722 , invalid number !!
When externalizing users in Essbase , it fails saying "UnableToGetNodeRevisionDescriptor"
Checked database settings ( UTF8) looks fine. I tried to deploy shared services with tomcat same problem...
If you have any ideas or hints , I would appreciate
    Thanks

    Hi Christophe
Try to reinstall shared services then run configuration only for shared services commons setting and database. after that configure "server deployement. then stop shared services web application and open LDAP server. start it again. check that shared services works perfectly by launching the web app.
After that configure the other products one by one.

  • Internet Sharing Help Needed!

Hi, I have just connected my Mac to an ethernet cable going to my router, but what I'm trying to do is use internet sharing, and it says internet sharing is on and everything! But then I go to my iPad the network is there but it says it is connecting but it's not it just has the spinning circle and then on the black bar on the top right it says I have internet but I don't! Please help me!

  • Internet Sharing causes iChat errors?

I've just finished installing Leopard on my mother's iMac and I'm trying to test out the screen sharing feature of iChat. However I keep getting an error after accepting my request to share, that my MBP isn't responding to her iMac's acceptance. Could this be caused by the fact that my MBP is connected to the web and trying to use iChat via Internet Sharing?
It won't be for a couple of days before I can have a dedicated distinct internet connection to test it.

    Yes.
Internet Sharing can not be On in Leopard.
This is because iChat "looks" as it were in both the connection to the internet via the other computer and it's Own IP form the routing device. (Sees two networks).
Other forms of two networks or Subnets also do not work.
Two DHCP server on the Same LAN when a Modem that Routes and a router are both doing DHCP.
Being connected to the same router with Wireless and Ethernet.
Connecting to a Neighbour's WiFi LAN and your own Ethernet LAN will do it.
Running Parallels in Leopard with it having the two VPNs it create in System Preferences > Network Active and sharing the Mac's IP that way. (Turn Both Off)
Certain MIMO wireless devices can cause the same effect due to the way they use the Channel the router is set to.

  • Remote App and Internet Sharing Problem

Ok so basically heres the setup we have, we have one of the recent iMacs, a Macbook, and 3 PC's, one running XP and the other 2 Vista. All of these computers are on a network together. All our music is on one of the Vista PC's, called "SERVER". This PC is connected to the speaker system, so is what we use for music.
Now I've been trying to use an iPod Touch we have (most recent firmware 2.2, and most recent Remote app version.) and the remote app to control the itunes on this PC. This is not an issue when the iPod is connected to the Wifi the router itself provides (its one of those wireless routers), but when I switch the Wifi the iPod is using to the Wifi provided by the iMac using internet sharing, it suddenly can't find the library anymore. Internet (safari) still works fine from the ipod when connected to this Wifi point.
My guess is that because the iMac using internet sharing seems to act more like a router than a wireless access point (allocating its own IP adresses ect..), the iPod thinks its on a different wireless network, and thus cant see the itunes library. Obviously the iMac is connected to the router directly by ethernet, if I hadnt mentioned that.
So, my question is, can I fix this ?
Is there any way to make the internet sharing mac behave like a wireless access point and not like a router ?
    Help would be much appreciated.
    Thankyou.

asuming you mean internet sharing as in you connect adhoc to 1 computer using wifi and the rest of the network is wired
problems is the middle name of adhoc wifi though cause everybody problems imho
and wifi routers are soo cheap most people don't bother
even if internet sharing is used remote app should still work if not connecting adhoc at least it's working for me right now
with a setup of many computers 1 wifi router
1 computer sharing internet using an usb 3g modem
remote app works with all my computers and my appletv

  • Lumia 710 signal and Internet sharing problem

I've been using Lumia 710 since 3 months. Even though the initial experience was good now I'm facing a serious signal problem with the phone. We recently moved to a high-rise building where the signal is weak inside the rooms. If the phone looses the signal it doesn't pick-up the signal even though network is available. This is causing a serious a trouble to me as I don't receive or make calls during the period. I either need to switch-off and switch-on again or I need to turn-on and turn-off  flight mode for the phone to pick up the signal. Sometime even though the signal shows 3/4 bars I won't be able to make/receive the calls.
I'm also facing a issue with Internet sharing option. Even though devices are able to connect they are not able to use the internet/data from phone. I was using the same SIM with other phone of different make and it was working pretty fine. I rely a lot on internet sharing option and now I can't even swap my SIM with old phone as Lumia uses micro SIM.
Please let me know the solutions to both these issues.

That is not normal though. Bring your phone to your local Nokia Care Center and let them have a look at it.
Internet Sharing on Edge/G is not working very well, try and find a 3G connection (which is fast enough) and you will get a better experience.
