Internet sharing via firewire cable

Hello,
I'd like to know, if there is any simple way to share internet connection from Mac running Tiger Server via firewire cable to windows xp pc? I thought it should be done by starting the Internet service in Sharing preferences, but in Server I'm completely lost.
In Sharing tab of System preferences I see only Remote Desktop, Remote Login and Remote Events services and when I start Server Admin utility, I don't know, which service to set and how and if I even started the right application.

Whilst I can invisage a way of doing this you must remember that Server is the gateway, therefore it must be controlling the access out of the building... Therefore, I assume that you have the server connecting to the outside world correctly.
In the setup of the server, you have the option of using firewire as the connector - this is effectively a network port and must be configured as such... if your server runs DHCP (not neccessary, but easier), local DNS and info for the router. Where I can see it falling over is the transfer from from one network port to another - ie traffic coming in from Firewire (say via the newly setup DHCP on the server, this will also force a netwotk IP in the same range that the server will accept), to the ethernet port to get out... it would be easy to use two different subnet ranges; (perhaps this is why you want to do it this way?).
I would have thought that a little ethernet hub to get the machines on the same 'network' - and ethernet at that, and the server being configured to control DHCP/local DNS/router info, and the PC to run DHCP would be the fastest way to get a result. It's certainly the 'accepted' way of working.

Internet Sharing via Firewire

I am trying to use my Intel iMac (10.5.7) as a gateway computer and connect my eMac (10.4.11) to it via Firewire to access the internet. (My router is faulty) I am able to share files successfully between both computers using the Firewire cable, but I cannot get the eMac to access the internet from the iMac. I have the iMac set up for sharing but the eMac cannot access the internet this way. I have followed the steps described in the Missing Manual but the Network page on the eMac doesn't allow me to click "Apply Now" because the button is grayed out. I suspect some of the boxes need some information entered, but I don't know what.
Any suggestions gratefully received.

Well, yes, replacing the router is the obvious solution. I had stopped using the suspect router to see if it was the cause of my connection dropouts. While I was conducting this experiment I thought I would try out the Firewire connection for Internet sharing, just for fun. Since I have had a trouble free connection since I removed the router I think I have isolated the cause of the problem.
What has puzzled me is why did internet sharing work with the eMac as the gateway computer, but not the other way around with the iMac as the gateway computer. Anyway, it is rather academic as I will probably replace the router, if Netgear cannot suggest a trouble free configuration.

Can't share internet connection via firewire - missing something obvious?

I have my G4 933 connected via ethernet to a Dynalink RTA100+ DSL modem/router. Would like to share this internet connection with anther G4 450 (time warp here) over firewire until I sort a proper router... both are running on 10.4.11
I connected the computers with firewire cable and configured the firewire ports Manually (as I couldn't get DHCP to populate them in the right range).
Tried initially turning on Personal File and Web Sharing on each, but couldn't get a Ping to go through g4 to g4, even though I can see each firewire port's ip in each other's routing table info...
Also turned on Internet Sharing over Firewire port from Ethernet but G4 450 can't connect.
Read somewhere that you can't do both, so have reverted to just trying to get the Internet Sharing working (as that's all the kids really want on their computer!)
Dug around in the modem for ages tried it in Bridge mode, couldn't connect either computer to internet then so have gone back to normal PPP settings with DHCP.

Now, nothing is actually connecting at all, yet when I do a Netstat of the Routing Table info, the firewire IPs are showing up on each G4...but still no ping, no internet.

Hi Rose,
You can't Manually set the IPs for Internet Sharing according to Apple, (I've done it, but not consistently),
You do want the G4/450 to use DHCP, the G4/933 will likely end up handing out an IP to the 450 of 192.168.2.4, (one higher in the 3rd & 4th place, and wont work if the 933 started out as x.x.2.x), but it must do it itself to keep track of NAT within itself.
True you can't do both File & Internet Sharing at once.
On the G4/933, en0/Ethernet needs to be dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations. On the G4/450, fw0/Firewire needs to be dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations.
Internet Sharing needs to be OFF on the 450 & rebooted if it was ON.
As far as the Setting not sticking, there may be more, but Trash these two files on the 933 then Reboot...

Screen-Sharing and Internet-Sharing via same network connection

I'm using a TiBook (G4 867MHz) and a MacBook Pro 17". They are connected via a WLAN-router. Additionally the MBP is connected to the internet via an UMTS-connection established with a Merlin 870XU type PC-card.
Network is working fine, including screen-sharing. Also the internet connection on MBP works without error. But if I activate Internet-Sharing via WLAN to get my TiBook connected to the internet, the MBP connection to the WLAN is cut off.
Can somebody tell me what's going wrong and how to solve it?

Internet sharing via dongle, how to set password for wifi network created?

I am using a USB dongle with my Mac book Pro to share internet through AirPort, so that i can access my mac book's wifi from my iphone. This works great, but it is an open network and I woud like to set up a password.
If anyone can point me in the direction I would be very grateful!

If you are using OS X's Internet Sharing feature, then you can configure wireless security on your Mac's internal AirPort Card but are limited by the OS X version that you are using. It was not until Mountain Lion that Apple provided WPA2 security. Prior to this only WEP was available.
You configure Internet Sharing via System Preferences > Sharing > Internet Sharing. (I don't have 10.6.x on any of my Macs so this may be different for your case.) Once you configure what is shared, you can then add wireless encryption.

Internet sharing via airport doesn´t work

Hello to everybody,
my problem is, when I do internet sharing via Airport on my imac (OSX 10.6.8) so I can use my ipad for surfing. The connection establishes for a short time and then it breaks down. Once in a while I can reconnect, but it´s constantly breaking.
I know, this problem is posted a million times, but it still seems not to be solved (or I didn´t find the right thread with the solution).
Bthw. I phoned the apple support. They wanted to charge € 49,--. Now I´m quite mad at apple. This *****. They are having a problem with their software and they want to charge me? That´s incredible. I can´t understand what´s the hype about apple. Such an awfull bad support they´re giving (or not giving at all).

File Sharing via Ethernet Cable

I currently have an Imac core duo connected to a router via airport, and a imac G3 just sitting idly in the corner. However i have some important files i need to transfer to the Core duo from the G3, and all i have is an Ethernet cable. Is this possible and how would i got about doing it? I have setup a small wireless network (for internet sharing), but outside of that i am totally clueless when it comes to file sharing and networks - so all help is appreciated!

I would plug the two machines directly into each other with your ethernet cable. It will be the fastest transfer and take as many things out of the equation as possible.
Are you running OSX on both machines? If either computer isn't seeing the other, try turning off each firewall under the same 'Sharing' preference pane that you turned on the personal file sharing. At the top of that same pane, give each computer a name in the 'Computer Name:' dialog. Then you can return to the Finder and choose Go-->Connect to Server... Type in the name + ".local" (ie: "Feron.local") and explicitly connect to the other machine.

I would like to use my smartphone HTC S730 which has a flat fee 3G internet connection to act as modem for my MacBookPro. This way I don't need a seperate datacard for my laptop and, when using USB my smartphone's battery is charged too.
BUT, Leopard > system preferences > internet sharing doesn't show USB (or Bluetooth) as option(s) for sharing. I have to choose Airport, Ethernet or Firewire. My smartphone cannot connect via one of these three options. iCentre store in Amsterdam couldn't answer my question. Any suggestions?

Internet sharing via airport woes

Hi,
apparantly an thunderstorm fried my ethernet-card in my MBP this morning. Now I am struggling to get internet-access via my iBook G3 which has DSL-boradband via ethernet (pPOE) (either via firewire or airport) but don't succeed:
1) file-sharing eithert via airport or ip over firewire works
2) I have set up my iBook to share internet via airport, enabled web sharing as HELP recommends.
Internet sharing nevertheless doesn't work for me: error message (in network-status) says (translated from German):
…Airport has self-assigned IP-Address and is maybe not able to connect to the internet.
I have used the built in settings, changed nithing manually. Any ideas?

Connecting my Powerbook to my iMac for internet sharing via airport

I have given up trying to get an answer to my Airport problem and NTL Virgin.
I now have my iMac connected to web via ethernet all okay for a week now so it can't be my connection that was the problem.
I need to connect my PowerBook to the internet now at the same time. I would obviously like to do this using wireless technology. I was hoping to web share my iMacs connection via the airport cards on both macs but seem to be struggling.
I can set up a new network on the iMac and get the PowerBook to see it but it won't connect to the internet.

To setup for Internet Sharing (Wired to Wireless):
Setup the Network
Internet Modem > (Ethernet cable) > \[Ethernet port] iMac > (wireless) > PowerBook
Enable Software Firewall - iMac
System Preferences > Security > Firewall
o Block all incoming connections (enabled)
Enable Internet Sharing - iMac
System Preferences > Sharing
o Select "Internet Sharing" from the options in the left column
o Share your connection from: Built-in Ethernet
o To computers using: AirPort (checked) (Note: Uncheck all other entries in the list.)
AirPort Options...
o Network Name: <anything you want>
o Channel: Automatic
o Enable encryption (using WEP) (optional)
o Password: (optional)
o Confirm Password: (optional)
o WEP Key Length: (optional)
o Click OK
o Select "Internet Sharing" again
o Click "Start" to start Internet Sharing
o Click Start

Turning on Internet Sharing via Airport disrupts internet connection!

I have a very strange problem.
My iMac G5 (10.4.10) is connected to broadband via an Ethernet cable. Everything works perfectly, Google Earth works, emails come through, internet downloads are perfect...
BUT!!
When I turn on my Internet Sharing to share my Ethernet connection via my Airport connection (to let my husband surf the net on his PC) all **** breaks loose on my Mac.
Google Earth does not function properly, all internet downloads (.dmg) come up with "codec overrun errors", all images sent via email downloaded through Entourage are corrupted, the list is endless. I have to turn off my Internet Sharing, turn off Airport, and then everything returns to normal again.
Why is this, and can someone help stop the fights my Husband and I are having when it comes to sharing the Broadband connection through my Mac - I don't want to because my Mac goes crazy!

Sorry but an Ethernet hub will NOT properly share the ISP connection. The ISP only gives you a single IP address. If you use a hub (or Ethernet switch), the first computer you turn on will win and get the only IP address. The other computer will not be able to connect.
To properly share the connection, you need to get a router. The router uses the single public IP address provided by your ISP and creates multiple local IP addresses for your computers.

Windows 7 wont connect to Lion Internet Sharing via Wifi

I have a 2011 Macbook Pro 15" with i7. I know the internet sharing feature works, because I used the wifi internet sharing with a Macbook Air and that worked fine. But when I try to connect from a Windows 7 Ultimate laptop, the connection cannot be established. I tried:
Changing the Wireless Name
Changing the encryption key
Tried no encryption key
Rebooted
Am I missing someting? Am I correct to assume that the built in internet sharing allows you to connect your devices to macbook pro as a router? I appreciate your assistance, thanks!

I have all my machines (rather HAD) connected to the internet via a shared single connection through a 3G dongle (welcome to the countryside). I made the mistake of upgrading my machine to Lion only to realise a couple of days later that all the other machines had been starved of internet access.
Now only my main machine has access, even though according to all of my thousands worth of apple gear the green lights are on and all is ok. The Airport extreme says it's connected, its lying. The Timecapsule says its connected, its lying. The Mac mini says its connected, its actually admits there is a problem when you run the network diagnostics. Same for our macbook pro. At least the Windows machine says it's connected but no internet.
This is pathetic as apple have know there was an issue since june last year. Once more I get the feeliing Apple couldn't give a fiddlers'. Most likely greedily eyeing the forthcoming cash bonanza from the ipad 3.

Internet Sharing via USB Wifi Dongle?

I just acquired a first gen Mini (1.25Ghz, 1GB RAM) with no Airport built in. I was able to add wireless to it via a Ralink 802.11n USB dongle. Here's my question:
Can I connect the Mini to the internet via ethernet and then use the USB dongle to share the connection with other Macs in my house?
I currently have an old PowerMac G4 acting as a server/wireless router. (Ethernet in to give it a real IP address for easy access from anywhere. Airport out to give internet access to my MacBook Pro.) It's a great setup, and serves me well (no pun intended), but if I could get the Mini to take its place, it would save me room.
Anyone know how to get one of these USB Wifi dongles to share out internets?

I don't have a USB wireless adapter, but I believe in order for this to work, you would have to be able to select it when attempting to configure Internet Sharing.
Does this USB adapter show up in the list of network devices under the Network panel in System Preferences? If it does, go to the Sharing panel. From this panel, select Internet Sharing; choose the USB adapter for the "Share your connection from" list, and then, choose "To computers using" = "Ethernet."
