Internet Sharing WiFi **TO** Wired Ethernet

Back Ground:
I have a Late 2013 MBP Retnia.
I have WiFi access via a captured portal.
I have other WiFi and Wired (Ethernet) devices that can not authenticate to a captured portal.
Question:
1) On the single MBP mentioned can I connect to the captured portal WiFi via one band (say 2.4) and then become a WiFI hotspot with the other band (say 5)?
2) On the single MBP mentioned can I connect to the captured portal WiFi via one band (say 2.4) and then share the Internet connection to the Thunderbolt Ethernet connector?

Hi gregbogus,
Checking the Internet Sharing options in the Sharing System Preference, there's not an option to specify which wireless band is used for what, but you can share from Wi-Fi to Ethernet (or vice versa).

I've not set up a Bluetooth PAN; a Personal Area Network. Modems and keyboards and such, yes.
My usual approach here would be a WiFi USB widget, or an embedded WiFi card or a PCMCIA / PC Card or a CardBus WiFi or wired network adapter, or a wired Ethernet connection for the Windows Vista laptop.
This to connect from the Windows Vista laptop to the AirPort, or into a wireline Ethernet (if there is one). And from there to the Mac Mini server running Mac OS X or Mac OS X Server software.
As for the PAN, I don't know. I don't have Mac OS X Server running on a box with Bluetooth hardware, either.

• How can I troubleshoot Internet Sharing (wifi to ethernet)?

Hi hi everyone!
Any idea how to troubleshoot wifi/ethernet Internet Sharing? I use to network a media player (like an AppleTV not made by Apple) and recently it stopped working. Luckily I have two macs in the house to shoot the troubles.
I have an iMac running Leopard 10.5.5 and a Powerbook running Tiger.
I have tried sharing both ways (imac wifi » powerbook ethernet and powerbook wiki » imac ethernet) but am only able to get an IP from the DHCP server (Airport Extreme N base station). I am not able to get on the web (google search, etc).
Where can I look to see what's not working?

• [SOLVED] OS X Internet Sharing to arch over ethernet

I previously had this working with arch's gateway set to the mac's ip and both subnet mask the same, but now OS X just shows the cable as unplugged.
Any recommendations on how to set my rc.conf?
Last edited by shnooks (2011-08-01 20:06:38)

I do not have the newest rc.conf. I haven't run pacman in quite some time.
This is my setup:
Internet <--wifi--> OS X <--ethernet--> Arch
and Internet sharing to Ethernet from Wi-Fi is enabled in the sharing pane on OS X.
Mac's network configuration
Arch's configuration:
eth0="eth0 192.168.0.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255"
INTERFACES=(lo eth0)
gateway="default gw 192.168.0.1"
I've obviously set the linux box's gateway to the mac's IP and both have the same subnet mask.
And, the stupid cable is clearly plugged in!

• Internet Sharing WiFi to WiFi in a hotel room?

I travel a lot.  Right now, I'm in NYC helping manage hurricane recovery and will be here in a Marriott hotel for 2 months before I go home.  Sick of paying $17.95 for a movie from their on-demand system, I got the brilliant idea of buying an Apple TV and plugging it into the HDMI ports that the hotel makes available for external devices so they can play on the hotel room's television.  Of course, I didn't realize until I was almost back to the hotel after picking it up at the Apple Store that I'll have major internet connection issues with the Apple TV in the hotel.
The reason...most hotels use a web-based interface for entering a username/password or room number to add to your bill when you connect to the Internet for the first time.  They don't use normal WPA encryption keys/passwords, etc.  In other words, the network is open, but you can't connect until you go through a Web-based login process.  Works fine on a computer...but Apple TV, of course, has no ability to do web-based logins.
I figured I could get around this by sharing the Internet connection from my MacBook Pro which always on the road with me.  I'm running Mountain Lion 10.8.2 on it.
Went into System Preferences > Sharing, and turned on Internet Sharing.  Under "Share your connection from", I've specified WiFi as that's how I'm getting Internet connectivity to my laptop from the hotel's ISP.  Here's where it gets weird.
Underneath in "To computers using", I have an option for FireWire, Bluetooth PAN, Ethernet, and iPhone USB.  There's NO option for Wi-Fi.  My Apple TV would be connecting to the laptop's Internet connection by WiFi, but for some reason, WiFi is not on this list, and as such, I also don't have the WiFi Options button below, so my laptop never shows up in the list of wireless networks on the Apple TV.
What am I doing wrong?  Why do I not have WiFi as an option here?
dt

The Apple TV allows you to connect by Wi-Fi or by Ethernet.  The Wi-Fi of course is a manual process because you have to select which SSID/network you want to use.  The Ethernet is supposed to be automatically detected.  When you have an active Ethernet connection going into the ATV via a cat5 cable, it's supposed to recognize it and use that as its connection source no matter what you have selected for Wi-Fi.
There is also a "Configure TCP/IP" option in the ATV settings that allows you to set TCP Automatically, or Manually.  The latter presents options for IP, Subnet, and Router and DNS addresses.  Currently, I have it set to Automatically.
In my case, it doesn't recognize any active Ethernet connection.  I have a good cable (it's good -- I've used it elsewhere this week without problems) that's connecting the Ethernet port on the back of the ATV with the Ethernet port on the side of my MacBook Pro.  And then in System Settings, under Sharing > Internet, I have specified WiFi as the computer's source connection, and Ethernet for the destination.

• Internet sharing wifi 802.11b/g

Hi. I don't know if this is possible or maybe I'm looking at it at the wrong way. I am trying to share internet from my MBP via Wifi. But the other non mac laptops can't connect to it. They can see the wifi connection, but they can't connect to it.
I'm thinking that my MBP is broadcasting in 802.11n while the other laptops only have 802.11b/g. If this is the case, can i make my MBP broadcast in 802.11b/g?
If this isn't the case, what can I do to give them internet?
My ipod touch does get internet from this broadcast though.
Thanks in advance.

You can definitely share wireless from your laptop by setting up what's known as an 'ad hoc network'. Usually this means that the IPs issued are in the 169.254.x.y range, which is otherwise better known as APIPA and when not being used as an ad hoc network range indicates that there's a problem with the DHCP server.
You can also turn on DHCP yourself and set up a valid private range, usually in the 192.168.x.y range.
Your laptop will work with 802.11n, g, b, and a systems.
You will need to turn on Internet Sharing, select the relevant ports, and turn off the relevant firewall entries. Other devices will need to pick up the signal (which will not be strong) and will need to use the correct network.

• Internet Sharing - MPB with Wirless Ethernet out to iBook G3

Okay i've got an MPB getting wireless, and i am connected to a iBook G3 via Ethernet. Trying to share the wireless connection to the iBook via Ethernet cable. I need a step by step help here because i have no clue where i am going or how to make this work. Apple help files have not really been successful at all. Any help is appreciated.

It's pretty simple. What you do is…
1) On your MBP go to the Sharing System Preference > Internet and select Airport in the "Share yur connectin from" setting. Enable the Ethernet port in the "To computers using" list.
2) Click on thr Start button.
3) On your iBook go to the Network System Preference > Built-in Ethernet go to the TCP/IP tab and ensure that "Using DHCP" is used to "Configure IPv4". Apply the change in need be.
You should now have the connection working. However, one thing you need to be careful with is the Firewall on your MBP. If any port is not allowed to pass through your firewall it won't pass through your connection sharing either. So firstly turn off your firewall and check to see if it's working. If it is turn it back on and start opening ports that are required by the iBook.

• Internet Sharing Ethernet to WiFi disables WEP password on Mac Network?

Hi all,
I have a curious problem, I'm trying to use internet sharing to share the ethernet connection to my iMac with my iPhone and iPad over wireless (no wifi where I live).
I can create a network with WEP fine, name it whatever, encrypt it with whatever, my iPhone can connect to it etc. but as soon as I turn the tick box for Internet Sharing on, the network loses its WEP encryption (so it's unprotected) and its name reverts back to "My Name's iMac", even if I set it up as "3423rfgdfgfdg" with WEP.
Basically turning on Internet Sharing overrides all the options I set up on the network, name, security etc and my WiFi turns into an unprotected internet source and a broadcast of my name, something I don't want where I live.
Am I crazy in thinking this is a bug not a feature and there must be some solution?
I honestly look forward to seeing what you guys think, I'm stumped.
This all used to work perfectly on Snow Leopard, I remember quirks during Lion but I got it to work in the end but I'm on ML now and it just doesn't want to work.

Hey, thanks for the suggestion but that's exactly what I'm doing.
See how after you've selected Ethernet in 'Share your connection from' and WiFi in 'To computers using' you then have to click the tick box ( http://cl.ly/image/1v191f2R1F1i ) on the left hand side to actually start the whole process?
Well regardless of whether I start it up in the 'Sharing' pref first, then set up Wireless options, or set up wireless options, then start it up in the 'Sharing' pref, whatever settings I choose get overriden as soon as I start the sharing.
The network just defaults to 'Asad's iMac', without protection. I don't understand why.
P.S. on a side note when creating networksI'm not offered a WPA2 option. Only WEP 40-bit or 128-bit. Dunno if that's connected: http://cl.ly/image/2X2g3w3y0B34

• Can't create airport/wifi internet-sharing network with other laptop

I have an iBook running Tiger 10.4.11 connected to the net with ethernet. The internet connection comes through a radio antenna which acts like a router to which I don't have access.
I want to share my internet connection, and to be able to transfer files, between the iBook and another laptop. I've tried it with two - one running Fedora 11 (mine) and one running Windows XP, and have the same problems with both.
I turn wifi on on the ibook and linux laptop. I turn on internet sharing from built-in ethernet to airport in System Preferences. First I try it with no encryption. 'Other settings may interfere with internet sharing' shows up; it tells me to enable Personal Web Sharing, which I do. When I click start Little Snitch tells me natd wants to connect to 10.0.2.1 (presumably the router in the antenna), which I allow. I try to connect with the linux laptop and it tries then disconnects.
1) isn't personal web sharing for serving web pages? — why is it necessary here at all?
2) what am I doing wrong in making my network work?
If I enable encryption using WEP, the other password asks me for authenticication, I put in the password, and it then tells me the network has been disconnected.
3) is WEP the best encryption I can use from Tiger?
4) I think the problem's with Tiger (both laptops can connect to other wifi networks not set up by me). Is there a piece of free software I can use to share the connection instead of the built-in one?
I can't make a functional network in reverse either (i.e. setting it up on the other laptop and trying to connect wirelessly with the ibook).
What I am trying to do is precisely this (http://my.safaribooksonline.com/0596009135/runmacx2-CHP-11-SECT-13) — it just doesn't work.

When I click start Little Snitch tells me natd wants to connect to 10.0.2.1 (presumably the router in the antenna), which I allow. I try to connect with the linux laptop and it tries then disconnects.
Back on that part, at that Point the Mac is a NATD Router, don't try to connect to the other computers.
On the Mac, with Internet Sharing enabled, open NetInfo Manager in Applications>Utilities.
From there on out, it's a bit foggy, but iirc Config>DHCP>Subnets><the subnet>, then down where it says com.apple.nat... what does it report for IPs?
If it were say 10.43.29.1 then the others trying to join should have that as a Router/Gateway, and then 10.43.29.2, 10.43.29.3, etc. as IPs.
Apple says you can't set it Manually, but I've had it work a couple of times.

• Mac internet sharing but keep same network

I use Mac based internet sharing -- it's great and give my upstairs a strong wireless signal. But can I make that the SAME NETWORK as the main network for content sharing?
Scenario -
Airport Extreme downstairs wifi "MAIN-WIFI
Apple TV upstairs and signal is weak from Airport Extreme accessing MAIN-WIFI (no wired ethernet here)
iMac is upstairs connected to Extreme via ethernet cable. Internet Share to create upstairs wifi, named UPSTAIRS-WIFI
iMac contains large library of home movies
Super strong signal from iMac to Apple TV which is upstairs! Great!
Problem - AppleTV works great for most stuff, but cannot access the home-shared content on the iMac using UPSTAIRS-WIFI created on the iMac! To see the sharing option, I need to connect to MAIN-WIFI which is too weak to use well. It seems crazy that the iMac wifi won't show the shared content that it is homesharing.
Is there a way of internet sharing on the iMac so it's the same network and therefore would homeshare the iTunes content on it's own wifi signal?
Thanks

Since both your AppleTV and iMac are upstairs and the iMac at least is connected to the Airport using a cable, why not use a switch? A 4-port gigabit ethernet switch can be quite inexpensive (check newegg.com) - that would connect to all three devices and effectively share the same network.

• AT&T microcell and internet sharing

I have an Airport Extreme connected to my cable modem, with an iMac 10.6 connected though the Airport. I just got an AT&T microcell which normally connects to the Airport ethernet port giving me better iPhone calling. I want to instead connect the microcell to the iMac ethernet with internet sharing enabled, through this ethernet port. The microcell doesn't like this, ethernet connection light just blinks and the network cp ethernet port says Self-Assigned IP. Can I make this configuration work somehow?

It won't work that way. The Microcell needs a wired connection all the way back to the router.

• Internet sharing not working in lion. Bug?

Hi guys - Internet sharing of my office ethernet connection is gone. It just doesn't work anymore. I hope that if we insist flagging this, they will fix it. It was really useful at work to share my connection with mobile devices.

Seems like there is no fix yet. Whenever I turn on internet sharing, the wifi will get a self assigned ip of 169.X.X.X and no wifi devices like iphone can get an ip by connecting to this network. It was working fine prior to Lion.

• Firewall, Internet Sharing, and Leopard

Hi guys,
Here is my scenario: I use my Macbook to connect to a public wifi network in my apartment complex. I use my Macbook for internet sharing (wifi to ethernet) and have a Win!@#s machine which I use for gaming hooked up to the ethernet port. In Tiger, I was allowed to let the game (World of Warcraft) through the firewall by adding the tcp ports it used. But in Leopard I am not given the option to enable certain ports, only applications. The problem is, the application actually runs on the Windows machine, so I can't just select it.
I've been reading a bit and it appears Apple did away with the port filter method and has adopted this new application only method. I find it frustrating and the developers should have known better than to disable this feature. It has severely limited the security in the operating system and has cast away power users like myself.
Is there anyway to work around this issue? Either with 3rd party software or some other way?
Message was edited by: Frank Cabrera

I agree, Apple really blew it by trying to re-invent the firewall.
Not having the ability to open or block traffic by port and IP address was a terrible idea.
Limiting it to Applications only makes the firewall almost useless.
I would like this idea if I was also allowed to choose for myself.
This is a technological step backwards!
Many many people feel the same way and some are now relying on the still built in ipfw which is a commonly used and quite robust firewall. Unfortunately it is very difficult to configure unless you really know what you are doing. I am sure this was one of the primary reasons why Apple made this decision.
Search around this forum for ipfw and you will find a bunch of info. Just beware it is not exactly user friendly even with some nice GUI apps that help you configure it.
Send feedback to Apple about this or it will never get fixed.

• Internet Sharing invalid password

I have a macbook Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and an iphone 4S with 6.1.2.
Months ago I went to System Preferences > Internet Sharing > WiFi and i was able to connect my iphone to the wifi created by my macbook by Ethernet. Now, the automatic channel and also the options of the password security have disappeared being 'WPA2 Personal' the unique option. So, i write my password in macbook, able the sharing conexion (green arrow icon on the top of the macbook, so it works) and then I try to connect in my iphone and everything is ok 'till I write the password. It basically says that the password is incorrect so I can't set a password for my WiFi, which *****. I tried with non-security and the WiFi works.
So, what's the problem? Why my iphone says that the password is invalid? Is it a bug?
Thank you so much

So now i have a problem getting it actually to work.
I plug the ethernet cord to my powerbook. Chose to share the ethernet connection through Airport.
My HP computer finds the network and can connect. It can also ping my powerbook (192.168.0.100) my router (192.168.0.1) and sites on the internet (www.kth.se) but i can't get any application (explorer, skype, messenger) to connect to the internet. I can also ping 10.0.2.1
I note that running a ipconfig on the pc returns an IP-address of 10.0.2.3 and a standard gateway of 10.0.2.1.
If I use the network utility on my mac I see that the IP-address is 10.0.2.1 for the "en1" (airport)
Why does my mac invent its own IP-address? If i try to set it to 192.168.0.2 I cannot see these changes taking place in the network utility., it's still 10.0.2.1
Any advice how to share my connection?
