Internet Sharing with WEP: any idea?

Have Mac OS X 10.4.7.
Want to share my Internet connection from built-in Ethernet wirelessly towards an XP box.
I open System Preferences -> Sharing -> Internet, tick "AirPort" and
under "Airport Options..." I tried the following variants for a WEP password:
40-bit
Password: $1122334455 (WEP-Hex) does not work
Password: "apple" (WEP-ASCII) does not work
Password: populos (WEP) don't know WEP key for my XP box
On the XP box, I tried to enter <1122334455> or <apple> but without success. Any ideas what I did wrong?

After restarting the Mac Mini, everthing worked as expected.
Sorry to have bothered you

  • How can I use Internet Sharing with Firewall on ?

    Hi,
My PowerMac G5 is connected to the internet via Ethernet. I share the connection to a Powerboog via Airport using internet sharing. Everything is working fine except when I turn the Firewall on. After reading http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107653 I tried opening port 443 but it still does'nt work. I'd like to be able to use internet sharing with the firewall on. Anyone can help me ? Thanks!

Hmmm, how curious... I never had to do that in 10.4.7 or 10.4.8... the only ones I ever tried Internet Sharing with.
I'm wondering if turning the Firewall on after the Internet sharing is what's doing it? Just for kicks you might try turning off Internet Sharing, then Firewall on, then turn on Internet Sharing.
If that doesn't work, then I'd personally try trashing...
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist
Then reboot and try the Firewall again.

if a Mac OSX Computer is in near - try iBackup Viewer.
This is free of charge and can read your backup.
and thats the main difference. Those tools are reading the saved Data in the backup
but itunes attempts to restore the data from the backup on your iphone. if there are any corrupted data in the backup - the backup restore goes wrong. this can happen during security software or wrong corrupt data already stored on the iphone.
if itunes messed up to restore from backup try this one :
    - restore your iphone to factory settings using HT1808 or reset all settings and content direct from iphone
    - rename your iPhone (e.g. iPhone Test)
    - setup your iPhone as new device -> attempt to make a new backup - if successful -
    - click in itunes on restore from backup... and choose your desired backup
    or go to:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(Username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    Windows Vista - Windows 7: \Users\(Username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Pull your complete BackupFolder and try a different PC - copy the BackupFolder on this different PC in the same Path above - start iTunes and see if your Backup is there - attempt to restore from Backup again

when I try to export a photo to my desktop I get the followiing error message "Export Versions Complete with Errors" any ideas why?

Have you tried to export different images as a test to see if it is related to the one you are getting the error on? Also try to export to a different folder other then the Desktop, again to see if the problem is connected to that folder.
Another thing to do is run the Aperture Library First Aid on the library. Hold the option and command keys down while you start Aperture. First run the Permission Repair and see if that helps. If not quit Aperture and restart and run the Library Repair and try.
Post back if you still have problems

  • I deleted safari off my computer. I can not access the Internet at all. Any idea how to wt it back?

I deleted safari off my computer. I can not access the Internet at all. Any idea how to wt it back?
The app is not found at all in my computer

If you’ve deleted or damaged the Safari application, you don’t have a backup, and you don’t have another web browser, proceed as follows.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Copy or drag — do not type — the line below into the Terminal window:
    open /Library/Application\ Support/Apple/.SafariArchive.tar.gz
Press return. The Archive Utility application will launch and run briefly. When it exits, enter the following line in the Terminal window the same way as above:
    sudo cp -R Downloads/.SafariArchive/Applications/Safari.app /Applications/
Select the whole line by triple-clicking it, then copy or drag it to the Terminal window. Press return. This time you’ll be prompted for your login password, which won’t be displayed when you enter it.
There should be no output from the above command. If that’s the case, launch Disk Utility, select the boot volume and run “Repair Permissions” (not “Repair Disk.”) This is one of the few times there’s a reason to do that.
Next, two more commands in Terminal:
    chmod -R -N Downloads/.SafariArchive
    rm -r !$
Those are two separate lines; press return after each one. You can then quit Terminal.
Test Safari. If it works, you’re done. If not, you did some other damage to your system and need to reinstall.

  • Has anyone else had difficulty using WPA2 Internet sharing with their Apple TV? Any solutions?

    Hi.
I've seen references to this on here, but no solutions.
I use my 27" 2010 iMac to share Internet in my home, latest versions of OSX and iOS.. Works fine, sharing with iPhones, an iPad and my Apple TV 2.
Recently though, I changed to WPA2, and the Apple TV can't see Home Sharing is on. If I switch security (ie WPA2) off, then it can see it again.
So has anyone found a way to use WPA2 successfully with their Apple TV?
    Thanks in advance.

    I’d suggest uninstalling:
    Blackberry software
    the cycling74 driver
Any HP “utilities” (regarding the HP IO. Apple told developers to stop using Startup Items back in 10.3.)
any Adobe software you have (the “not loaded” ones are not loading because they’re incompatible.
    the com.apple.CSConfig one.
    facebook
    google keystone agent
Unfortunately you have a lot of very questionable old, incompatible, and probably bad software on your Mac that is not playing well with Mavericks.  Some of these can be difficult to uninstall, particularly if you are not familiar with poking around in Mac system folders.
You might consider cutting to the chase and doing a clean install:
backup your documents and passwords, network settings, etc.
    Completely erase your hard drive
Reinstall mavericks and your apps from scratch (not from backups)
    and finally replacing your documents.
It can be a good thing. Spring cleaning. If you want to go this route, let me know, I can give you some more detailed suggestions for how to do it. The advantage is you can get Mavericks running really fast and reliably, and then be more selective about what you reinstall. A lot of the stuff you have on there is probably from apps you don't even use anymore (like for your Blackberry), or that really aren't necessary.

  • I try to use "internet sharing" with my iphone, ipod, iPad, etc. and none of them work. Any step by step ways to help? Or advice?

I researched various youtube videos, websites, etc. and none of them work. Are other apple products really not compatible?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Open System Preferences > Sharing > Internet Sharing, and turn it off by unmarking Internet Sharing in the System Preferences sidebar. Then, make sure you are connecting the Mac to the Internet by Ethernet or FireWire, and then, share your Internet connection by Wi-Fi by marking Wi-Fi. Finally, tick Internet Sharing in the sidebar.
In your devices, open Settings > Wi-Fi, and select your MacBook's connection. You can't use Bluetooth to share the connection

  • IMac internet sharing with WinXP

    Hello everyone,
I'd like to post a little issue I found with my new iMac (OS X 10.5.7). I had it connected to the internet, directly through the ethernet cable modem. I used the Internet Sharing option to share the connection through Airport.
I have a mac mini running Windows XP for media centre purposes. The XP in the mini sees the wifi network created by the iMac, but when I select the option to "connect", it suddenly reports an error and says the network is out of range...
(Wifi network config: Automatic channel selection, WEP password only)
Any ideas on what could be causing this? I "solved" the issue by reversing the process (i.e., connected the cable modem to the mini, created the network in XP, and connected the iMac to that network).
My iPhone connects flawlessly to the internet through wifi on both configurations, as does my macbook...
In either case, this is going to be a temporary solution until I can get a Time Capsule, so I'm more curious about cause of the problem than actually worried about it.
Thanx in advance for any input on this!

Based on your description of your devices this is how I would set this up.
In System Prefs/Network make sure Airport is a network service in the list on the left. If it is not, add it to the list by clicking + and selecting AirPort from the Interface pulldown menu, give the service a name, such as AirPort and click Create. Highlight the service in the list on the left and Turn AirPort On to the right. Lastly, check the Internet Sharing box on the list to the left. (As you can see, you must do these steps in this order because as soon as you check the Internet Sharing box, the other options are greyed out and unavailable to configure.)
In System Prefs/Sharing choose Ethernet from the Share your connection from pulldown menu. Then click the Airport option in the list for To computers using. In AirPort Options give your network a name, choose Enable encryption, and select 128-bit in the WEP Key Length pulldown menu. Because it is 128-bit you should enter a 13-character password and confirm the password. Click OK.
    I do not have Windows on a machine to actually set this up and test it, but I have XP on my Mac in a virtual machine and these are the instructions to connect to an encrypted, secure network;
    1. Open Network Connections.
    2. Click the wireless network connection icon, and then, in Network Tasks, click View available wireless networks.
    3. Under Related Tasks on the left, click Change the order of preferred networks.
    4. Click Add.
    5. In Network name (SSID), type a name for the wireless network.
    6. In Network Authentication, click an item in the list.
    7. If this is a security-enabled network, in Data encryption, select the encryption method.
    8. In Network key, type the network key, and then in Confirm network key, retype the key.

  • IChatAV possibly problems with router, any ideas please?

    Can anyone please help me?
I have spent a few days trying to work out what is wrong with my network/computer setup that prevents video chat working to computers that are not on my LAN. I have read just about every forum and post that looks meaningful but am struggling now.
Once upon a time it all just worked (with tiger). Now that I have a use for it..... obviously it doesn't.
My set-up is a little complicated but I can't believe its too unusual. I have a couple of macs and PCs running leopard with all the latest patches (although ichat had stopped working before the leopard upgrade). The LAN uses 192.168.1.0/24. I have a linux based router (openwrt-white russian 0.9 WRT-54GS) which runs amongst other things an asterisk SIP server (on port 5060). But while the versions of software have changed (mainly to try and get iChat working), it is still the same set up that used to work. There is an airport extreme on the LAN as well but that is in bridge mode and used as a 802.11n AP and printer server. My DSL modem is a Dlink DSL-302G which is running in half bridge mode which terminates the ASP's PPP session and presents IP packets addressed to the router which is provided with the PPP supplied IP address using DHCP. The router therefore is effectively connected directly to the ISP, there is no NAT in the DSL modem, only the router.
My ISP now offers a SIP based VoIP service which I use via asterisk on the router. The asterisk server also uses several other SIP based providers for both incoming and outgoing calls but these have been there for a long time and still work fine, so the ISP isn't messing with SIP messages.
As I have said this set-up once all worked fine with iChat over the internet. Now all that works is text.
iChat does work between machines on my LAN where I can do text, audio, video and screen sharing. I assume that this means that ports to external co-ordinating entities are working through the router. Non of the LAN machines have a firewall configured on them.
When I try and set up an AV chat with a remote machine I get to the "Starting video chat with..." and then after 10-15 seconds I get an error:-
    Disconnected from video chat because:
Did not receive a response from xxxx xxxx
When I try and set up an AV chat with appleu3test01 I get a different message saying "appleu3test01 cancelled the connection which I am assuming is just something timing out quicker on the bot and causing it to cancel the call before the setup protocol times out.
I have messed with the router adding and removing different uPNP agents but as far as I can tell they are working. I can see that UDP port 16402 has been set up for forwarding to the my imac.
When calling a friend, I have run network traces on the mac and both LAN and WAN ports of the router. I don't have any information on the AIM protocols to see if the problem is in there. I can provide the traces if this is useful. I do notice that SIP messages are being sent to my friends internet IP address but that they only contain my machine's LAN IP address ...
    INVITE sip:user@{friend's WAN IP addr}:16402 SIP/2.0
    Via: SIP/2.0/UDP 192.168.1.4:16402;branch=z9hG4bK1cf33cfb08dfaaca
    Max-Forwards: 70
    To: "{friend's name}@mac.com3" <sip:user@{friend's WAN IP addr}:16402>
    From: "my name" <sip:[email protected]:16402>;tag=149537885
    Call-ID: bcb4f7d8-d235-11dc-a3aa-b2953c604012@192-168-1-4
    CSeq: 1 INVITE
    Contact: <sip:[email protected]:16402>;isfocus
    User-Agent: Viceroy 1.3
    Content-Type: application/sdp
    Content-Length: 736
    .....snip....
Is this correct? UDP port 16402 has been upnp configured in the router to DNAT to 192.168.1.4:16402 which is the machine I made the call on. I do not receive a response to this message or any other SIP messages from my friend. I can see a upnp conversation between the mac and the router which asks for an external ip address which is provided. I can also see this external IP address being used in some AIM message fields.
Any ideas gratefully received and I can send significantly more information if required.
Thanks if you read this far.
    Steve

Ralph, Thanks for replying. There where no received SIP messages at all just the INVITE being sent but I have made some more progress. The mini does indeed just work. I can do everything that you are supposed to do to other ichat users on the internet. Very nice.
The imac is still playing up but I have got further. I had peerguardian2 installed which unknown to me doesn't need to be running to prevent you for accessing 'barred' IP addresses. snatmap.mac.com is barred in the lists! I discovered this when I saw one of your other posts showed how to turn on terminal logging for ichat. Now that I have turned off peerguardian2 (using the disable filters option) I can make calls to the testbot and see the adverts. I have even done a video conference with the two testbots. I will just uninstall peerguardian2.
However, I can not get a AV chat working to a real user....
    In response to your suggestions:-
I have tried all the options for quicktime streaming but will try 1.5Mb/s again.
The ichat bandwidth limit is set to "none". I am in New Zealand and I have standard ADSL (not ADSL2+) 7.6M down 512K up. The mini config is also set to none.
    Internet sharing is off.
I have had parallels on the machine but the two interfaces that it installed "Parallels Host-Guest" and "Parallels NAT" are configured 'off' and show as not connected. Is this enough? I will uninstall parallels and see if that helps since I don't use it. I also have VMware's thing installed but that doesn't seem to add any interfaces.
I need to capture a full trace of the imac to other ichat user to see what is happening but will update when I have does your suggested changes or have a trace
    Thanks again

  • Internet sharing with a Windows PC

I have read and re-read many sites and tutorials on how to set up Internet Sharing from a Mac to a Windows XP Home pc, however I have not mananged to get it to work. I want to be able to use the internet on the PC as the modem is broken, so I thought I could just connect to the internet on my iBook and then share the connection over to the PC.
The configuration so far is my iBook running Mac OS 10.3.9 connects to my dial-up internet connection, and I have an Ethernet patch cable (and not a crossover cable. I'm guessing this doesn't matter due to MDX/MDX-IX). This patch cable connects it directly to the PC. The connection establishes at 100MB/S, and pinging either computer works fine, as does FTP and other protocols.
However, even though I have enabled internet sharing on the Mac, I cannot seem to use the internet on the PC no matter how many different configurations I have tried.
Another thing I have tried is using the Mac as a proxy server, this does not work though as the Apache web server page always comes up.
Am I missing something here? It will probably have been right under my nose all the time but please help. Thanks

Hello everyone, right now I have a problem quite similar. First, I have both a Mac and a PC which connect both to a Linksys Router WRT54G, Both have internet connection well. Here is the issue.
If I turn on my PC and then turn On My mac, I wait until both are at the login screen, I log in, first PC then Mac, I go to my PC and do ping to the Mac IP address, if I AM LUCKY I can see the PC shared folders on my mac. but if I do ping first on the mac I won't be able to see the PC shared folders. I say if I AM LUCKY, coz I only can connect every once in a while, it's pretty rare actually. I use the PC via ethernet connection and the mac via airport, and they used to be quite good before, I haven't installed anything unusual lately on either both so I don't think there is a problem with any app recently installed, and as I say, every now and then I get connected so, if there was a problem with an app, I wouldn't ever be able to connect. at least that's what I think.
I have checked the pages linked on the other message, but won't help, I don't have any more ideas for the moment, and even though every now and then I can do magics to connect them, I'd like to find a definitive solution, I don't like my machines to work half good.
good care, I appreciate any help. thanks

  • Iogear GBU211 and internet sharing with missing sync

I have an iogear GBU211 bluetooth to usb adapter and it has been behaving strangely. I use the connection between my TT3 and the computer keeps dropping and it cannot complete a full sync over bluetooth. I would also like to take advantage of internet sharing over the palm. I decided to give missing sync a try. I was finally able to perform a hotsync (as long as I didn't try to install anything to the palm), but the real problem hits when I try to use internet sharing. I get a kernel panic everytime. Here is the snippet from the panic.log file.

I would (i think) rather use the iogear as it has a better range and I don't want to go and buy the d-link. I dislike that apple is trying to force me to use the d-link adapter. Does anyone know of a fix for the iogear problem?

I do understand what you're saying Michael, it isn't exactly profitable to offer broad range support, but at the same time, a little broader would be a nice thing. In the case of the IOGear module, it's packaging did have the os X logo on it (if memory serves me correctly) and it did state it will work in Mac os as well. With that in mind, one would think that either or both IOGear and Apple would know about this and make sure that it does work, or, barring that, Apple should have IOGear pull their compatibility statement off of their packaging. As a consumer, if a product I purchase states that it will work with my machine, I would expect it to do so with minimal headaches.
In any case, as for my main problem (no wise cracks please), I caved and picked up the D-Link. I had a friend with a pee cee who needed a bluetooth adapter, so, for a "fair" price, I was able to go grab the D-Link.
With the exception of it's shorter range than the IOGear BT adapter, it has worked flawlessly (so far).

  • Internet Sharing with my Xbox 360

Hey guys, I was just wondering how to get an open NAT with my PowerBook and xbox 360 setup. Right now my NAT is "strict". I've searched on the board and no one has a solution. I have a D-Link DI-524 wireless router and when I connect the xbox directly to it the NAT is open, but when connected to my PowerBook it's moderate. I am too cheap to buy the xbox wireless network adaptor and this setup is very convenient for me because my xbox and PB are upstairs and the networking stuff is downstairs and I don't want to run a long cat-5 up here. Please, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can't really help you with your network but I'll describe mine maybe that can give ideas.
x-box360 with wireless device set up to connect to Apple Express router. The Express is hard wired to an Apple Extreme N router. The Express is set up wireless to create its own network with WEP security not WPA2.
I tried WDS and also " to join" and having the Express wirelessly connect to the N router but I could not get those methods to work with the x-box360.

  • Internet Sharing with OS X 10.4.3

Having an eMac (OS X 10.4.3) owns WiFi internet connection.
PC (Windows XP Professional) connects to eMac via Ethernet switch. PC can ping eMac, but not able to browse internet.
iBook (10.4.3) connects to eMac via Ethernet switch. iBook can ping eMac, but not able to browse internet. Ran Network Diagnostics on iBook. "Built-In Ethernet", "Network Settings" and "ISP" buttons are green. "Internet" button is red.
Each of the three computers can connect to the internet individually via dial-up modem. eMac and iBook can connect to the internet via AirPort individually with no problems.
On eMac, internet sharing started with share internet connection from AirPort to computers using Build-in Ethernet. I also ensured the workgroup name is the same on PC and Mac SMB/CIFS.
What else should I do to be able to browse internet on PC and iBook vis internet sharing on the eMac?
    eMac   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Well, Duan, I managed to get the PC to work as well. (Don't ask me what I did.
Now, I am trying to the PC to share the internet connection owned by the iBook, but I just can't. I checked to make sure the iBook has the same settings at the eMac and PC settings remain the same when the treo worked together.
    Any hints?
BTW, when the treo worked together, I couldn't get to some of my mail servers. I'd assume it's a DNS issue. What can I do.
NOW, the reason that I can't use a "cheap router" is I do not have an Ethernet cable access to the AirPort base station. It's two doors down.
