Internet Slow---Last Resort---Install fresh copy of Tiger---Any tips?

I have an open topic about my situation where my internet is very slow using safari and firefox. I've done most of the suggestions in that post and now am considering reloading a fresh copy of Tiger.
When logging into a new, second account, the system seems to be faster than when I log into my usual account, thus this decision.
I currently have 6mbps download with 640kbps upload speeds and did a test just now and got 5.12mbps and 630kbps. Eventhough this looks very good, the system is slow when using my account.
I used CCC to backup all my files and would appreciate any tips if I should do anything else prior to installing a clean copy.

Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security:
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:

(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:

Hi Community! I just bought a new WD Blue 1 TB hard drive, my old hard drive is WD Blue caviar 500 GB, running on Windows 7 ultimate 32 bit.
There are two things I wish to do: 1. Firstly, if it's possible, I would like to copy some videos, images, music etc. from my OLD Drive to the new one.
Please note that, I don't have an external disk to do it, I know that would've been less complicated, but that's not an option at this point. 2. Secondly, once that is done, if possible, I want to remove windows 7 installation from my old hard drive, re-partition it to make it just the storage drive, and finally install
fresh copy of windows 7- 64 bit to the new Hard drive.
Please note that, my old Hard drive is installed on windows 7- 32 bit and now I want to install a fresh copy of Windows 7-64bit instead of 32bit, because I am upgrading my
configuration with better ones.
I am adding 4 GB corsair vengeance ram to my 2 GB corsair ram, so that is 6 GB in total.
I am adding 1 TB hard disk to my 500 GB Hard disk, so that is 1500 GB.
Both my processor and mother board supports 64 bit.

In simple words, say I have a dos computer, I installed my 1TB WD hard drive, installed a fresh copy of windows 7-64bit. So my computer is up and running. Now, I have another hard
drive which I wish to use, that is 500GB WD, but it has Windows 7-32 bit installed in it.
So what I want to do is, make this old hard drive a complete 500 gb storage device and remove the windows installation from it, without loosing music, videos, etc. and then lastly
copying the music and other media to the new hard drive, and formatting it completely.
I am perhaps making this very complicated, I know you would have better easier solution for this.

Since you don't want to clone the drive (I agree with you), you can just swap drives and install Windows on the new drive. Windows won't complain that you are installing on a different drive because it only cares if you change more than one piece of hardware at a time. The problem will arise when you copy the files from the old drive because you cannot just connect it via SATA. That would confuse Windows, as both installations were run on that hardware. You need to mount it in an external dock via USB 2.0/3.0 which will isolate the details of the OS. After you copy all necessary files, you can use WDC Lifeguard to write zeros to the entire disk and then create a new partition. After that you can mount it via SATA because it will be a new drive. Do NOT be in a hurry to wipe the drive however, as you don't want to forget something.

Trying to install fresh copy of xp pro

Hi Beni,
chances are your BIOS is set to AHCI Mode. SATA harddrives aren't recognised until after the driver is installed, which is not part of the XP cd install. So you have to change it to "Compatability"
Start the BIOS Setup Utility menu.
Select Config.
Select Serial ATA (SATA).
Select Compatibility.
Now you can install XP. Change the setting back only when you've installed the right drivers.

First, backup your system.
Reboot your system, press and hold the Command-R keys at the boot chime to enter the Recovery HD. From there you can use Disk Utilities to erase your Macintosh HD and then reinstall Lion. You will need an internet connection and I can't remember if you'll be prompted for your Apple ID and password prior to Lion downloading.

Yes, so it's often the case with a used Mac unless the previous owner prepared it for sale correctly.

Internet slow down after installing airport extreme.

I would like to know if there is a reason this slow down occurred. I have tried a locked setting and now have an unlocked setting. Unlocked because that was the only way I could get nintendo ds to work online. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

How to format my mac and install fresh copy of Snow Leopard

When i bought my mac, it was coming with Mac OSX 10.5.6 Leopard.
I want to remove everything and start my mac from beginning again using Mac OSX 10.5.6 Snow Leopard directly. is it possible?
I already bought the Snow Leopard DVD.
Can i just directly re-install and format my mac using this Mac OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD?
Or i need to format it first using old Mac OSX 10.5.6 DVD,then after that upgrade to Mac OSX 10.6?

Definitely yes.
I know that you know that there are two kind of installs for Leo: upgrade and erase and install. In principle, there would be little difference between the two. Many here say that upgrading, versus erasing and installing, is the superior procedure provided that one's prior installation is in very good condition. Others feel differently. I say just do what you prefer. My bet is that percentage-wise those getting good installs from an erase and install, particularly if all apps are reinstalled, rather than migrated, is higher than for upgrade--but probably not appreciably higher.
The processes leading to the final outcome should lead to a good outcome in either case. But, things can go wrong either way. I am not going to try to elaborate much on the specific ways that things could go wrong either way. To erase and install,
1. Start up from your Sno DVD, and start the installer.
2. Choose your language

To do an upgrade install,
1. Start the installer from your Sno DVD either from your desktop or by starting up to the DVD.
2. Choose your language.

Installing pogoplug onto home network - any tips?

Hi all. I was keen to add a Network Attached Storage (NAS) drive to my BT Infinity home network and decided to try something a little radical: The Pogoplug (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pogoplug-File-Media-Sharing-Device/dp/B003FZB6C8). However, the network doesn't seem to be picking it up. The troubleshooting guide indicates one of the following could be the reason:
Is your Pogoplug enabled device connected to Power? (YES)
Is the ethernet cable connected to your Pogoplug enabled device and to your router? (YES)
Does your router give out IP addresses to computers on your network (DHCP)? (NOT SURE...)
Do you have a firewall installed that blocks UDP, or is UDP disabled on your router? (NOT SURE...)
Anyone else got one of these and managed to install successfully?

Does your router give out IP addresses to computers on your network (DHCP)? YES (assuming home hub)
Do you have a firewall installed that blocks UDP, or is UDP disabled on your router? NO, not normally
That last question is not relevant if you are sharing on your local network only.
If you were sharing files over the Internet, then you would have to open up the correct ports, to allow incoming connections.

I tried to reinstall everything but I get an error because 1) the older version of bonjour cannot be removed and 2) an older version of quicktime cannot be removed which then says that itunes can not be installed without quick time.
Unfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on June 25. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (The results from mydigitallife and Major Geeks are worth checking.)
After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Bonjour and QuickTime entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp. Restart the PC, and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

Need to install a fresh copy of firefox

after I uninstalled Kaspersky Internet Security webpages stopped loading. I'm getting Unable to connect message. This issue affected 3 out of 4 browsers that I use. All browsers work in safe mode, but Safari is the only one that works in normal mode. IE Chrome, and Firefox will not work. I thought I need to make a fresh install of the browser to work. First I've tried to reset Firefox to to default settings - this didn't solve issue. First suggestion ,there have been a number of identical user questions like yours, in the Lion Community. If you want to talk to other MacBook Pro owners, try the forum they have.

What you do not need is some gizmo to "speed up" or clean caches etc.
Maybe you need to make more room on your hard drive, or add more RAM.

Power Mac G5 Dual 2.3 freezing from Archive Install of Leopard from Tiger

Just archived and installed Leopard from Tiger 10.4.10 and on all our Macs, but our only PPC system is having serious issues. The system boots up fine, faster than before, however the Finder and desktop freeze when booting into any of the two user accounts. Applications run from the dock, but the Menu Bar isn't loading fully (airport, bluetooth, clock, etc don't load). I have run Activity Monitor from the Dock and systemuiserver and finder both freeze. I have reset the PRAM and NVRAM, and in the one instance I was able to get into the files I deleted the systemuiserver and powermanagement plist's.
Upon many hours of research with Apple and at home, nothing seems to be the solution. If I can't resolve this I may have to install a copy of Tiger (or Leopard) on an external HDD, boot and attempt data recovery from the main HDD (if nothing is locked) as a lot of Quicken 2007 files are needed and perform a clean install. If any one is able to give any help I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
Also, the Power Mac G5 is Dual 2.3 late 2005 model (specs: http://support.apple.com/specs/powermac/PowerMac_G5_Late2005.html ), with 1 GB RAM, ViewSonic VGA monitor, NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT with 256MB of GDDR3 SDRAM, Airport + Bluetooth, and wired keyboard and mouse. Thanks again!

Performing the clean install seemed to take care of any conflicts and issues, but means more time will be spent manually backing up and reloading all personal data.

Installing libpng for Intel Tiger...possible?

I'm trying to recompile my PHP with GD enabled - I am following the instructions here http://developer.apple.com/internet/opensource/php.html.
The guide recommends using fink to install the graphics libraries. But I'm stopped at "fink install libpng." When I run this (as root) I get "Failed: no package found for specification 'libpng'"
Looking further online it seems that building libpng may be an issue on Intel macs.
Anybody installed this successfully? Got any tips for a relative n00b? Any help is much appreciated...thanks! I'm on 10.4.9, soon to be 10.4.10.

Rather than re-compile PHP4 for your system, you could also just use the Entropy PHP5 distribution (unless you really want to do the re-compile). It's an easy install, and includes the GD library.
There are two "gotchas" with this package, though: First, make sure you download the correct package. He has a package for Apache 1.3 and Apache 2. Unless you've also installed Apache 2 (which I don't necessarily recommend), you'll want the one for Apache 1.3.
Second, if you've already enabled the stock PHP4, you need to disable it by commenting out the two lines in the httpd.conf file that you uncommented:

Just add the "#" back at the head of each line:
