Internet slow with G5 using Airport Extreme ethernet

I have the reverse of everyone else's Airport issues-I run SLOWER on ethernet! I bought & installed Airport Extreme two days ago. It's running into a DSL modem which is set up as a bridge. Our wireless computers (iMac/Intel and Dell netbook) have no problems. My newest Mac (2.26 GHz Quad Core, OS 10.6, ethernet connected), is fine, but my G5 (pre-Intel Dual 2GHz PowerPC, OS 10.4.11), also connected via ethernet, is taking 40-50 seconds to load a page. The G5 doesn't even have wireless capability, so I never loaded those software updates. Because of this I thought the G5 might be having a problem communicating with Airport, even through ethernet, so last night I updated to the latest Airport Utility package for 10.4.11 (21-20-49.pkg) This didn't seem to help.
I usually use Firefox, but tried Safari and Explorer-same problem. If I reset the DSL modem to standalone mode and connect the computer directly, the G5 downloads at its normal fast speed.
One last thing, and it's really kind of weird. I went to Network Utility and 10-pinged a couple of sites (google & bbc.uk). The average speed on the G5 for google was 23.945. The average speed on the QuadCore was 24.479! Slower!! I may be misunderstanding what this means. A page that takes 60 seconds to load on the G5 will load in 4 seconds on the Quad.
Is it Tiger? Is it because my G5 is pre-Intel? Is it because Airport doesn't like me? Please help!

Changing ports didn't work. But then I thought of running from the G5 to a different ethernet line altogether (got one for clients on the other side of the room) and the downloads were spot on. I went back to the original config-wall jack to a Belkin UPS for isolation, out of the Belkin to the computer. Swapped all the ethernet patch cords with no difference, but taking the Belkin out of the equation solved the problem. Got to find another way to isolate though.
Last thought: I don't know why the Airport and Belkin have this issue.

  • Slow Internet connection with IPhones using airport extreme

My Airport Extrem works fine with IPads and Mac Book but not with IPhones (very, very slow). Any advice?

Its Pretty simple if you need to change the network password on the wifi Just do a soft reset
To do this you need somethign small and skinny like a bobby pin then look at the back of the airport extreme for a tiny play button below that you stick the bobby pin in that for a full second.
Then go to your Pc go to aiport utility double-click your aiports name then go to the base station tab and you can change your password.
    Having worse problems still?
Then you need a hard restart to do a hard restart (like last time) take out something small and skinny (such as a bobby pin)  and look behind your airport for a tiny play button then right below that there should be a hole or a button use the bobby pin and stick it in the hole and leave it in there for 5.7 seconds then take it out and it should be rapidly blinking.
Then after it finishes blinking rapidly you need to set it up again like you did when you first got it.

  • How can I create my own network in my dorm? (Using Airport Extreme + ethernet cable) (To connect AppleTV and Sonos successfully with no restrictions)

So I recently set up my Apple Airport Extreme Router in my dorm and have a BIG problem. It works and lets me do most things on my own network, but when I try doing things on my external devices connected to the network (Apple TV and Sonos Hi-Fi Sound system) the connection just doesn't go through. I'll give two examples.
After setting up my Sonos system successfully, I was prompted to update the software so I can use options that need internet access such as pandora and soundcloud. It just didn't work at all. It gave me an error that had to do with internet connection. I tried numerous times.
On Apple TV, I used AirPlay on my phone to mirror what I was seeing on my phone and then tried to play youtube, soundcloud, and other music apps and none of them worked.
My guess is that it has something to do with my school's restrictions on streaming or downloading. But none of this stuff is actually restricted so I know it must be due to the transfer of information between my network (which is connected to the school's network I am assuming, since my ethernet port is in my dorm wall)  and my external devices.
Honestly I'll probably get the "Your school has these restrictions answer", but I know there is a way to fix this and I really want the answer!!
    Thanks,
    Andres

You don't need the AirPort Express to do this.
You can set your Mac to share it's wired connection over the wireless port and the iTouch can connect directly to the Mac.
You could also do it with the AirPort Express, but you don't need to - it's overkill for what you've described.

  • Apple TV with MacPro using Airport Extreme Base Station

I can't get iTunes on my MacPro to show my Apple TV. I have the MacPro connected to an AE 802.11n via ethernet. I've tried all the things listed in the various forums and the ATV connects to the internet OK and the MacPro connects to the internet fine. I just can't get the two to talk to each other.

That's the problem. I've been searching the internet on and off for weeks and there have been so many helpful things that don't help it would take too long to list them.
iTunes prefs are set to look for ATV; my firewall allows all incoming connections and I tried specifically giving permission to iTunes without effect; and both computer and ATV list the same subnet mask when I check settings.
I ran the ATV fine with my previous mac, but it had an airport card. The macpro doesn't, which seems to be hindering the process.

  • Internet slow down after installing airport extreme.

I would like to know if there is a reason this slow down occurred. I have tried a locked setting and now have an unlocked setting. Unlocked because that was the only way I could get nintendo ds to work online. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Beanziez, Welcome to the discussion area!
Unfortunately the Nintendo DS only supports WEP and not the much more secure WPA2 or WPA.
What slow down? You gave no information on this except asking the question.

  • How do you use Airport extreme at hotels etc, when traveling? I can plug my computer into the Airport with my ethernet but how does Airport pickup signal?

How do you use Airport extreme at hotels etc, when traveling? I can plug my computer into the Airport with my ethernet but how does Airport pickup signal? What equipment & devices do I need to travel with to make this possible?

You may mean the AirPort Express.....not AirPort Extreme.....as the Express is a popular travel router.
The whole idea behind using this device is that the hotel must provide an Ethernet jack in the hotel room. Then you connect the AirPort Express to the Ethernet jack with an Ethernet cable and configure it to provide your own wireless network in the room. You still have to agree to terms, pay the fees, etc.
The problem with this approach is that it is getting very difficult to find hotels in North America that prrovide an Ethernet jack....most have moved to wireless networks and the others are not far behind.
So, if the hotel is already providing a wireless signal, the AirPort Express is of no use in that situation.
If you normally stay at the same hotels, and know that they provide Ethernet ports, an AirPort Express might make sense in terms of convenience.

  • Airport Extreme ethernet not working with Windows XP

Windows XP no longer connects to the Internet via the Airport Extreme ethernet port. XP says the cable isn't plugged in but when I connect XP directly to the DSL modem it works fine. When I connect my MacBook Pro to the Internet through the Airport Extreme ethernet port it works fine. (I'm sure it's connected by ethernet because I do +sudo ifconfig en1 down+.) I can't figure it out. I'm relatively certain Airport Extreme is blocking XP from connecting via ethernet but I'm not certain. It worked without a glitch for about two years. Lightning fried my old DSL modem and ever since I got the new one, XP "can't see" Airport Extreme, but will connect directly to the DSL modem and the net without a hitch. Any insight will be much appreciated.

I'm not sure why your PC is not able to connect to the AirPort Extreme Base Station's (AEBS) Ethernet port, but it is likely the lightning strike may have something to do with it. I'm also a bit surprised you're were able to run the "sudo ifconfig" command under Windows.
To rule out general communications issues between the modem and the AEBS, I suggest that you try a complete power recycle of all your network components as follows ...
Try the following, in order, checking for Internet access after each step, until resolved:
    1. If the modem has a reset switch, use it to reset the modem. Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the modem to initialize.
    2. Remove power from the modem. If it has a backup battery, remove this as well. Wait 5-10 minutes. Replace the battery, and add power back to the modem.
    3. Perform a complete power recycle of your network components as follows:
    Modem/Router Power Recycling - Quick
    o Power-off the modem, AEBS, & computer(s); Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBS; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
If this fails to get the modem to "recognize" the Internet router, then try the "Full" version.
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling - Full
o Power-off the modem, AEBS, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBS; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
    4. Contact your ISP to have them perform a "modem reset."

  • Re : Apple TV doesn't connect to a Wi-Fi Broadband Internet Service using Airport Extreme

Hi, using Airport Extreme (Airport Utility version 6.3.2, Internet :DHCP, Router mode : Off (Bridge)) with a Wi-Fi Broadband Internet service. My Desktop (iMac), Macbook,iPhone,iPad join the Airport Extreme Wirelessi network (WPA/WPA2 Personal) easily and Broadband ISP Login-page pops up with username & password options. However, in case of Apple TV (2nd Generation Software : 6.0.2 (6646.81.1)), it connects the Airport Extreme W-Fi network easily but no Broadband ISP Login-page pops up with username & password options. Even using the Ethernet connection of the said Wi-Fi Broadband Internet Service directly to the Apple TV, no internet network connects. Please help.

There is no way you can handle login details with the ATV and there is probably no way you can do it with extreme in router mode either.. If you need to use a login name and password via a html screen then that is impossible in a device without html.
But your newest addition confuses me.
A slight correction in the question : the Broadband Internet Service isn't Wireless, but having Ethernet connection to the Airport Extreme.
So how do your iphones pop up a login page.
easily and Broadband ISP Login-page pops up with username & password options.
The alternative method is to use a computer .. login to your service and use ICS through the computer to the ATV..

How do I use Airport Extreme to limit internet time for my kids?  His computer is hardwired to the modem.

You can set up daily time limits for each computer that connects using wireless, but it is not possible to do this when a computer is connecting directly using a wired Ethernet connection.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility on your Mac and click Manual Setup
Click the Access Control tab below the icons
    Select Timed Access
For more details on this, click the Help menu at the top of the screen and enter the following phrase into the search box:
Controlling access to your wireless network
A more sophisticated approach would be to use a service provided by OpenDNS. From your computer, this would allow you to monitor web sites visited, and block any unsuitable sites. More info is here:

What ADSL modem do you advise to use with my new airport extreme? I have tried a basic TP-Link ADSL2+  modem and I can't get the configuration working. What modem does Apple recommend?

Ok well I have looked around some more and have found this to be the most up to date official response to my question as seen at this link here:
    http://www.actiontec.com/support/product_details.php?pid=41#q27
Can I Bridge the Actiontec MI424WR router that Verizon provided, when I signed up for FiOS service?
The MI424WR does not have a bridging option, and neither Verizon nor Actiontec support attempting to bridge it.
The desire to bridge the MI424WR is based on a misunderstanding that it is a modem as well as a router. Actiontec does produce DSL Gateways that have a Transparent-Bridging option, which bypasses or disables the router function and allows the Gateway to act simply as a DSL modem, when it is enabled. Many consumers do not realize that with FiOS, the ONT (typically outside the home) is the device that handles changing the FiOS signal from Fiber to either Ethernet or Coax, and that the Router is just a Router, and if it was bridged or bypassed, it would be a device without a function. For most Verizon FiOS customers their service would completely stop if the MI424WR was bridged, because the Video on Demand service is dependent on it to work.
If your ONT is connected to the Actiontec MI424WR router via Coax, the MI424WR is required due to the Coax connection. But if the ONT is connected to the MI424WR via Ethernet, then in most cases some other router can be substituted for the MI424WR, and it can be removed."
So it looks like I will be calling Verizon support to see about getting the Ethernet connection installed and getting another modem...

I allowed Apple updates about two weeks ago and now Safari is way too slow.   I have tried using Airport and Ethernet and the problem is the same.  Yesterday, I upgraded to Safari 5.1 and now the problem is worse.  Any solutions?

I can't stand peremptory affirmations like "Nothing is wrong with Safari".
Thousands of users can't be wrong (see the discussions).
If I read you the right way, it's never software' fault, it's the user who's the culprit.
    Amazing!
In this very case, the fact is we can't give to "christinefromfonthill" a good solution because weren't sitting in front of her Mac.
You give her a good advice which could, perhaps, lead to an improvement.
But must also admit that Safari is a very slow browser compared to Firefox or Chrome.
And you can't ignore all the problems which arose when upgrading to Lion and were related to the new build and specs of Safari 5.1.
The best example is the apparition of "garbage type" (use of Last Resort font) when reading numerous sites. This never occured before and is the direct consequence of Safari compliance to Web Open Type. This standard prohibits the use of Type 1 Postscript Fonts and is the reason why so many people are in trouble.
I use a Mac for more than 25 years.
I am a very "clean" user who hates the bells and whistles of third party.
My Mac is always up-to-date and despite all my Mac loving care, I run into some problems.
Imagine the nightmare which can occurs for the vulgum pecus who isn't, by definition, a power user aware of all the requirements for running a System in optimal conditions.
May be Safari is one step in advance on its time but lambda users are paying the price for it.

How is the express getting internet? What modem is it plugged into?
How is the extreme setup? New extreme cannot be setup with 5.6 utility.. you must use latest 6.3. Which also means you cannot setup from computer using less than Lion .. or you must use iOS with latest utility but it has limited configuration cf the computer version.
IPv6 is also needed.. turn on local link.

  • What type of repeater should I use with my new Airport Extreme?

what type of repeater should I use with my new Airport Extreme? Thanks.

If you want to repeat both bands of your dual band AirPort Extreme, another AirPort Extreme would meet these requirements.
If you only need to extend one of the bands that the AriPort Extreme provides, then an Airport Express would do that nicely.

I want to use an existing AirPort Extreme (2010 model) with a new AirPort Extreme to extend the range and signal strength into a shop. They are different designations, one n and the other ac. Are they compatible. I need to know before I buy the new router.

The new AirPort Extreme will provide an ac,n,g,b compatible wireless signal.
The existing AirPort Extreme can be configured to extend the n,g,b signal, but it cannot extend the ac signal.
