Internet Speed Decrease

A few days ago, I dropped my MBP off at a Apple store to see why the keyboard and track pad were unresponsive. The genius there told me he would swap out the Airport card and replace it with a new one. Know that before this whole insident occured, my internet was blazing fast. However now that I have my computer back fixed, the internet is very slow. I feel like i'm connected to dial up sometimes. I use an Airport Extreme Base at my house and using N-Networking so I'm not sure why this is happening. Can anyone help out or tell me what to do?

I've had my line slowly throttled down from a 3.4 Mb/s provision to now 2.1 Mb/s. I'm pretty sure it's the ASSIA optimizer (de-optimizer is probably more apropos) because it doesn't increase your line speed, it only serves to reduce it further & further.
I get short power outages or blinks in electricity during the summer time and what I notice is that either the modem quickly reboots or I have to turn it off and back on for it to synchronize. Once the ASSIA system senses that I'm reconnecting, it thinks I'm having a problem and keeps bringing me down. One occasion I tried a different gateway modem to see and since I had to turn off and back on everything, I was further throttled down.
How to get get this to stop permanently and have my line set back to at least 3.4 Mb/s. I know this works fine because I have months and months of Speedtest.net results saved and I was fine all that time getting actual 2.90 Mb/s on the provisioned 3.4 Mb/s DSL line.

"How do I find that IP address because I put in the 192.168.1.8.."
That's not the router's IP address. Most likely it will be 192.168.1.1
    System Preferences>Network>Advanced>TCP/IP should show it.

    Hi
I just recently updated my bios to version f 33 and now my internet speeds with this laptop are going up and down randomly each and everytime.
The speeds with my other devices connected are just fine so no problems with my wifi.
I tried to downgrade to the previous f12 but it says i cannot due to "BIOS update is not allowed on this device due to security policy set by the BIOS admn"
    Please advise.

  • Wrt54g2 Internet speed decreased by 54 times

    hi
im am currently using a wrt54g2  v 1.0 wireless router, and it runs at a range of 54-1 mbps. Usually its okay for the first few hours after a reboot, running at the sppeed 36-54 mbps, but after few more hours it drops to 5-1 mbps......
i have called the linksys techinical help line before, and changed the transmission rate, channel and some other stuff  but the problem still occurs. i do have a cordless phone.
However on my old router, wrt54g v 5 or at least thats the model number, it always ran at 54 mbps for 3 -4 years non-stop until it suddenly became insecured for no reason and i had to get a new one.
please help me with this problem
also can anyone please explain to me how a secured wireless network becomes insecured and "ghost networks"?
    thanks

Upgrading/reflashing the router's firmware might fix your problem...So try to upgrade/reflash the firmware of the router and re-configure it from the scratch...To upgrade/reflash the firmware, Click here

  • Does Airport Express decrease internet speed?

Right now I use wireless DSL in the home & the speed is very poor - 1.5 Mbps is the fastest available in my area. I have purchased an AE for airtunes and also want to extend the range in my house. Will using AE reduce my wireless internet speed when I connect to it? This would make a big difference to 1.5 mpbs.
    Thanks,
    J

    Thanks for the info.
You will be able to configure your AirPort Express to "join" the wireless network created by the 2-wire for airtunes.
Unfortunately, the Express will only "extend" a wireless network that has been created by another Apple base station, so it is not compatible for this use with the 2-wire.

  • Internet speed drops 85% when routed through WRT160NL

I have a WRT160NL, and it decreases my internet speed from 3700kbps down to 550kbps when I route through it.
My ADSL modem is connected via ethernet cable to the WRT160NL, then I have an ethernet cable from port#1 of the WRT160NL to my desktop computer. With this connection, I get a download of about 550kbps.
When I route directly from my ADSL modem to my desktop (bypassing the WRT160NL) my download speed is 3700kbps. I've checked all cables and connections. What is causing the speed to drop by 85%?
    thanks,

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

As you are facing the problem on your Hardwired computer, then you change the settings on your Router... Once you login to the Router setup page.. Below the Setup you will find MTU size which will be set to AUTO so you need to change it to Manual and change the Size from 1500 to 1365 and click on Save Settings..... Then click on the Security tab and Disable "SPI Firewall" and Uncheck "Filter Anonymous Internet Requests" and click on Save Settings...
Now you need to power cycle your Network... Unplug the Power from the Router and Modem, Wait for 30seconds and then plug the Power to the Modem, Once all the Lights are lid on the Modem then Plug the Power to the Linksys Router...
Now you can check the Speed, what the speed you are getting it on your Computer....
If you still face the same problem then i think you need to upgrade the firmware of your Router.. Go to website linksysbycisco.com/downloads.........insert model no of your router in serach tab......select proper version of your router........download the firmware file......save that file on desktop....
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
    Now reset your router :
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

  • Leopard Wireless Speed Decrease...?

If someone out there can test a similar setup for me I would appreciate it.
    Using a
    1. G5 Dual 2.5 (10.5.1) with an Airport Extreme a/b/g card (using G).(it is the only client on network)
    2. Airport Extreme N Base Station with g compatible band.
    3. Cable Connection of 20Mbps down/2.5 Mbps up
    4. Using: http://ma.speedtest.rcn.net/ to confirm speeds(although you have to be an RCN subscriber) any respectable speed test will do.
    5. Try wireless and record speeds (mine hasn't broken 11Mbps, (although it is ranging from 4-9 on average)
    6. Plug in Computer directly to base station via ethernet and record speeds. (I'm getting my normal 20Mbps) averaging 16-19.
This computer was achieving normal speeds of 20mbps via WIRELESS prior to leopard. Now it only works via ethernet or is slow.
I have tried swaping a few kext files, preference files, etc, but really don't know where to start.
**I'm almost positive it is on the *computer side of things*, not the basestation.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I would like to know if others are experiencing a speed decrease with leopard via wireless.(**you probably wouldn't know unless your going over 11-12Mbps, because that is where it seems capped.)
My MBP is already been in repair for a week (waiting on a part) and I do not want to jump through hoops for a false hardware issue when it is either a bug in 10.5.1 or a simple fix via terminal or some other firmware, firewall, extension, pref, etc..Thanks

Hi Shaun...by default the second Firewall is the titled ipfw, this wall can be configured through the Terminal, there are some sites the give you the complete manual on how to set it up, but basically it showed its zany head during the Panther 10.3 install where upon users where not able to configure the System preferences' own firewall (everything was grayed or locked out and was unable to be opened) except for the terminal command, There was a big hooplah about it, but basically OS X contains two, the ipfw is a FreeBSD app. that is complex and its for concise configuration of ports. Im sure there is an old thread about here or in macrumors.
    http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/firewalls-ipfw.html
    http://seaotter.berkeley.edu/cab/mac-firewalls/
basically it could conflict with the main firewall, in my logs it showed that it denied the router's ip address, upon flushing of the rules it allowed it, while still maintaining the security of the main Firewall, Also in Leopard full bars mean Data rate to the router, unlike in Tiger it meant signal strength, so you can be connected to the router but not be connecting to the internet (been there),
in the Terminal command you may find the ipfw manual pages, to set precise port settings etc. the System prefs firewall is more UI friendly, but its like buying wholesale, instead of a precise item being purchased. So in your case its not blocking anything, because your main Fw is functioning already, but it is something good to know. like I posted before migrated accounts may carry over these configurations from the ipfw that worked in Tiger but not in Leopard because of the new sets of rules etc.

  • Loss of internet speed using EA2700

    Hello,
So I setuped my network as follows.
one Linksys Ea2700 model is the DHCP server and connects via PPPOE to my ISP and another 2 routers ( same model) connected to the router.
Now if I connect directly with my computer ( Asus G series laptop with Windows 8 installed on him) I get the full 100 Mbps connection the ISP promised.
Connected to the internet behind the router I get a speed loss to 40 Mbps wired connection and about 27 Mbps wireless connection.
If I connect behind one the second routers I use as access points the speed is at about 9 Mbps wired connection and 8 Mbps wireless connection.
I've tried disabling the router firewall protection but it only made things worse. Thou It felt a bit faster as someone suggested I couldn't use the internet properly ( the pages weren't loading but oddly If i could manage to download something it had a decent speed).
Also connected through one of the second routers I have a CCTV recording device that also streams to the internet ( with a setuped DDNS ) and it works properly. If I disabled the stream I couldn't notice much of a internet speed increase.
As a final note I already read this thread http://community.linksys.com/t5/Wireless-Routers/EA2700-wired-speed-issue-worst-expensive-router-i-e...
Incidently me and him have the same ISP.
    So my questions are:
How do I decrease this internet speed loss that passes through the routers?
Is changing any of the routers neccesary? According to the specs these routers should be working fine.

    Hi dkey89,
Media prioritization should be set to 0 kbps for Downstream Bandwidth and Upstream Bandwidth. See illustration below:

  • Wired Internet Speed ridiculously slow

I am running Windows 8 64 bit on an HP Pavilion p7-1414 Desktop PC.
For a while I have had a pretty good experience, but for whatever reason my brother decided he should do a HP System Recovery and completely reinstalled Windows. Anyways, got everything set up again but noticed that the Internet speed was slower than usual. Contacted my ISP and asked about it and they said it wasn't anything wrong with the connection. Before the recovery I did not have this problem, but I noticed that it gets EXTREMELY bad when I install AVG free or even BitDefender, any antivirus besides Norton. I can try downloading say, a game, and the internet speed will start out at the usual 1MB per second, then it will rapidly decrease until it gets to about 15-400kb per second. If I pause and unpause it, it will start higher than 400 but then decrease to its usual speed.
I have tried another reinstallation of Windows, which didn't do any good. I have installed all possible Windows updates and Driver updates.
I just don't know what to do now, has anyone else ran into this problem and managed to fix it?
Edit: I should also mention that for some reason the Wireless adapter will not work on this computer anymore either, this happened after the first reinstallation. I have tried two different networks, neither work on my computer but work flawlessly with my Android phone and Xbox 360.
I'm not sure but maybe the Internet driver has something to do with it? In any case, the one I have is Qualcomm Atheros AR8161 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.30) while the wireless one is: Ralink RT5390R 802.11bgn Wi-Fi Adapter.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

If you have installed and uninstalled multiple antivirus it is possible that some remnants of one are interferring with another.
It's just a hunch, but that's what I think it is.
I would suggest getting rid of Norton completely since their antivirus costs money and is a resource hog.
There is a program to uninstall it, search for it on google, called nonav.exe (No N.orton A.nti V.irus) and it thoroughly deletes all traces of norton.
As far as wireless goes there might be a switch that isn't obvious.  When you go to device manager, is it installed?

  • Internet speeds keep slowing down to a crawl

I'm having a problem that has only developed in the past week which was during a time when I haven't changed any configurations in that period of time since my son was born a week ago yesterday and I obviously had more important things to do than mess with my network configurations. However, about 2 weeks prior to his birth, in the process of configuring a baby monitoring system with icam source, 3 weeks or so ago, I read that I might be able to improve my internet performance, I ran googles namebench a couple of times and added and re-ordered the DNS servers that had been listed prior to any problems developing based on its' reports. My internet speeds improved as a result of changing those DNS settings and stayed good until the past week. But of course, we now need to use the computer as part of our baby monitoring system and it's not working worth a **** and I'm getting frustrated since I can't put my finger on the problem and I don't really have time to spin around in circles right now. I'm sure it's probably something simple and I can't put my finger on it though. Sleep deprivation is new to me.......
I've kept running log of notes so this is a little deshoveled but I figured the more information I provide the better the chance someone might help me get this solved quickly.
In the last week, since my sons birth, my internet speeds would be okay after restarts and resetting everything, 2.5 Mbps or so but after a 10-15 minutes it starts to slow down to .2-.3 Mbps. I went thru all my network settings, restarted everything, repaired permissions, I've changed ethernet cables reset PRAM, firewall is running, stealth mode enabled, allow signed software incoming connections and my various other programs such as netsessionmac4f3c6b, skype, java, itunes, etc.
All sharing services off and pretty basic login items at startup including growl.
I had AT&T come out and check my DSL line and everything checked out on their end up to and out of the DSL modem based in their equipment tests.
The problem seems to start when I connect my imac (a fairly loaded 27" imac I got in Dec.) First off, as soon as the imac is connected to the modem via ethernet, the old ethernet modem flashes and continues to flash, even right after startup. So the tech thought something was running in the background and I can't figure out what. I looked through login items but don't see anything that would be a problem and am afraid to eliminate everything.
So I created a guest account to eliminate any login items (I think) and in I got 5.69 Mbps right off the bat. But after a minute or two, without changing anything my download speed slows down and I get for example .77 Mbps. The same thing happens with my administrator account on the imac. Fast speeds at startup and more importantly if I change the configuration by switching between ethernet and airport, I get fast speeds right after changing the configuration but after a minute or two I am well below 1.0 Mbps. I've got several network configurations with automatic, airport and ethernet set up in different ways including a clean ethernet connection with the original DNS settings.
I haven't set up an airport only account but that really isn't the way I want to hook up the computer that sits right next to the modem and runs my network. Restarting the old modem and direct connecting the computer to the modem results in the same thing happening.
I connected my ethernet from the (old?) modem directly to my ancient powerbook G4 and I got +5.6 Mbps download but it also slowed down to 300 kbps after 5 minutes or so the first time (old modem?)
Now to explain why I have "old?" listed above. I was then able to get a new DSL modem from AT&T, hook it up just fine, get enormously faster internet service in the 5,000 kbps only to have it slow back down to around 300 kpbs after connected for several minutes.
    directly connected to imac-bypassing router
    3,500 kbps
    after 15 minutes-250 kbps
connected to imac thru router/time capsule with airport extreme
    2500 kbps
    after 15 minutes=166 kbps
directly connected to an older powerbook G4 with new modem
    IP address of 192.168.1.64
    5.65 Mbps on speedtest
    after 15 minutes=5.67 Mbps
    after 30 minutes= 5.59 Mbps
    1 hour-5.66 Mbps
Very solid, stable readings for what I am used to. This would seem to isolate the problem to the imac.
directly connected to imac with new modem
    IP address of 192.168.1.64
    5.8 Mbps on speedtest
    after 30 minutes= .60 Mbps-ping takes 250 ms
    1 hour= .46 Mbps-ping takes 250 ms
Now a problem that only started last night after I hooked up the new modem and started up my old Time capsule/airport configuration, I got a message that said something to effect of "another device on this network is using computer IP address 192.168.1.64. So I tried manually changing last digit of the IP address on the computer to one number higher and it kept saying the start and end range were incorrect so I shut the airport station down since when it was connected, it would not allow the computer to connect thru the router via ethernet. I did a hard reset on the airport and I got it back up and running just fine but the internet speeds on the imacs' ethernet connections are so slow it's practically worthless. I also checked to see what was connected to my airport on any given occasion, 2 iphones, 2 pads, another imac running upstairs and a newer powerbook running icam source that is supposed to be the baby monitor. Except for the laptop everything can use "802.11n" but the powerbook only connects via 802.11g so I have set the airport to that limiting setting.
Any suggestions? Is there a way for me to log what is happening so I can report in more detail?

First thing is to check if the wireless is on a sensible channel: HomeHub doesn't always make sensible choices.  Install inSSIDer on your laptop and see what other devices there are around and if there is any clash.  Also, try moving the HomeHub around a little, even quite small differences can make a big difference to wireless signals.
You could run an ethernet cable from downstairs to upstairs.  Easy to do, but can be a bit unsightly.  If most of your devices are upstairs, you could use this cable to connect the modem to the HomeHub.  If you have devices both up and down, you may want to keep the HomeHub downstairs and add a switch upstairs.
HomePlug may be suitable for you.  If you search Amazon for HomePlug you will see a couple of kits for just over £30.  Don't go for an 85Mbps one.  A 200Mbps such as the TP-link or D-Link should be much better than wireless, but not as good as a cable.
Depending excatly how many devices you want to connect and where, you can pay more and have a builtin wireless at one end: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Devolo-1408-Wireless-N-HomePlug-Adapter/dp/B00472MMCQ/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qi...  Or it may be best for you to use the basic devices and add an old wireless router in switch mode.

  • Time Capsule only runs with 1,1Mbit up/down during data transfer, internet speed is ok, TC is used to extend an existing network

    Hello Everyone,
I have a new 2TB Time Capsule running with a MacBook Air. I want to use the TC to access data (Aperture library, iTunes library, other Files) and to backup my MacBook Air via Time Machine. I set it up, integrated the TC in my Network (FritzBox) by choosing "extend existing network" and it works. BUT only with 1.1Mbit/second while writing or reading Data to/from it. Internet speed is very good, like it was before. While the 1.1Mbit/second seem to be ok with Aperture and iTunes (streaming music and movies) it is still painfully slow and I'm not realy happy with that
    I've read that:
The 1.1Mbit problem is pretty common when Time Capsule is integrated and used to extend a network (bridge modus), it also looses all ethernet connectivity then (that woul explain why connecting it by ethernet didn't help during initial setup and data transfer)
Is there a solution besides ditching the Fritzbox and using the TC to build the network? Because basicly I still need the Fritzbox for its DECT features.
Thank you for any help in advance and have a nice day,
    Olli

You have double hop wireless with this setup..
You should bridge the TC.. that is router bridge not wireless bridge, and plug the TC into the Frizyboy by ethernet.
Then you can setup the TC wireless to reinforce the fritzy..
    Same wireless name as SSID.
Same security settings... really should be WPA2 AES or in TC personal.
    Same password..
    Just different wireless channel.
Then you can use 5ghz on the TC if you are up close and personal.

  • Absurdly slow internet speeds and often unable to ...

I'm used to getting around 13 Mbps Internet speeds from BT.
In the last few days, although the speed tests show similar results (assuming I can actually get online to test them), Internet browsing has become painfully slow, with many pages simply not loading at all.
I've called BT, and been through some tests with them, and they assure me that everything is fine, and that my Internet speeds are as high as ever.
I've also done some hunting around on google, and tried using open DNS settings, but to no avail. It's especially hard to upload data, and it's almost impossible to send email.
Occasionally, if I turn on my Mac after a longish break, I can get online easily, and send e-mail for a few minutes, then the problem returns.
BT insist that there's nothing wrong with the line, but the fact that the problem affects both my Mac and my iPad suggests that the problem is not with my computer.
Indeed, I'm now in the local pub, and everything is working just fine.
I've been through all the usual things - checking location of Homehub (even though it was absolutely fine for 18 months in its current location), changed the ADSL micro-filter, changed the wireless channel, etc, and to no avail.
    What else can anyone suggest?
    Thank you.

So, the first time I did this speed-test was on my return home, when everything was working fine again.

  • My internet speed suddenly went VERY slow on all browser

    I am running on a Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5, 2 Ghz Intel i7, 4GB Ram DDR3.
I am experiencing very slow internet speed after some system update some time ago.
I have tried using wireless and LAN cable but both results the same.
I've tried resetting routers in both my office and home but it is still as disappointing.
Kindly advice on what to do? I've forgotten which update is it as it is some time ago already.
I have installed bootcamp in my macbook and tried the using from windows but there isn't such issue. The internet was smooth and great.

    Try these basic troubleshooting steps.
    1. Quit all app scompletely and restart the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
    2. Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
    3. Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

  • HT1222 My internet speed has slowed to a crawl after installing security update 2015-003.  Any ideas on how to fix?

I have a mini mac with 8GB ram and running yosemite OS. I recently installed security update 2015-003 and now my internet connectivity have slowed to a crawl. sometimes if I turn wi-fi off and then back on the speed returns to normal but sometimes it does not.   Any ideas what may be causing the slow internet speed?

Please check the speed of your connection on this site.
Then start up in Recovery mode. In the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. Check again. Then restart as usual and post the results.
