Internet speed dropped to dial-up speed!

*(It took me about 15mins to get to this page)*
There seems to be something wrong with my Mac when i opened it up today; the internet speed has dropped right down to below dial up speed, yet all the other computers in the house are running fine at broadband speed.
Hope you can help!
Thankyou very much in advance!

The following usually works on both Tiger and Leopard:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
form values
download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
com.apple.Safari.plist
Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.
If not, MacFixit have published a very detailed (very!) article on speeding up a slow Safari, here:
http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070416000657464
Many, including me, have also followed the advice given by others here to add DNS codes to their Network Settings, with good results in terms of speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
208.67.222.220
208.67.220.222
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
Restart Safari, and repair permissions.

    So what's broken??
    1) My wiring is Test socket (out of master socket) to BT Filter and then out to phone and HH4
    2) I've disconnected, pulled apart, switched off, and put back together again all computer/hub/phone connections
    3) Phone appears fine, no particular noise on the line.
Feels like not my end except the wife can be a bit heavy handed when doing today's weekly vacuum cleaning.
Needless to say it's pretty difficult and unpleasurable to use the internet at these dial-up speeds.

Connection speed better and high noise margin giving scope for a further speed increase.  Any exchange problems shown http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/mso.php

  • 3meg DSL Download speed running at dial-up speed

Since last week I’ve been getting DSL download speeds that are basically dial-up speeds.  I have the 3 meg plan and for the past 10 years or so, I came close to a 2 meg download connection speed regularly.
Last week my download speed basically disappeared.  I spent hours on the phone with Verizon Tech Support during the week.  (Their standared 72 hours to assign a service call after creating a service ticket is bogus.) A Verizon DSL tech spent 5 hours at my house on Saturday and said the problem is on VERIZON’S END with their servers.  He did it all, replaced internal wires, used his modem for the tests, checked speeds at the NID, took the router out of play, tried to get new wires from the service on the street, and still could not resolve the issue.
I show the correct 3360/864kbs connection on my DSL Modem (Actiontec GT701D) but my download speed is averaging 33K to 60K using 4 different speed tests.  DSL disconnects at random also. My upload speed is typically around 700kbs – where it should be.
My most recent test is from this morning:

This performance drop off is totally unacceptable.  What’s really interesting is that my service call has been closed out as “resolved”.  Which is obviously has not.  I am now being forced to go through support again to “diagnose” my problem.
I’ve been researching (painfully) these speed issues and have determined they are a chronic problem going back to at least 2006 for many DSL customers.  The issue seems to be they have oversold DSL services and overcrowd their local Central Office servers and routers.  There is supposed to be some performance issue regarding Redbank and Juniper switches.  Redbank is supposed to be more reliable and Juniper aren't so.  I also believe their latest “optimizing” software may also be part of the problem.
For the first time EVER, I am seriously considering converting to COMCAST because no one at Verizon (other than the DSL tech) will acknowledge they are the cause of my issue.
Anyone have a realistic idea as to what needs to be done at the Central Office to correct this issue?
    Thanks for your time.

Consider yourself lucky. I have had the 3Mb plan for over ten years and initially had regular speeds of 1.5 to 3.0...until a new development was put in a block away, they were connected to Verizon, and my speeds dropped to 205 kbps down/805 kbps up at the copper drop in my basement. Many calls to Verizon resulted in modem upgrades (currently the Westell 6100) and reassurances from Verizons foreign help desk that my service was performing normally. Promises of FIOS soon being available in my area (Cedar Brook, NJ) have kept me hanging on but I stopped holding my breath a few years ago.  Hopefully your service will be restored - mine most likely never will.

  • BB dropping to dial up speeds.

I had infinity 2 installed about 2 months ago, after the first week I lost my phone line for 3 weeks, still waiting for compensation. Since getting the line back my BB keeps dropping to 0.09 / 0.00 every few hours. I have had a new hub sent out and hasn't made a difference and to be honest I'm tired of ringing India Telecom and them telling me to restart my router. Is there a way to get out of my contact?

    Hi Soupy1985,
Welcome to the Forum and thanks for posting. Can you try running the speedtest and post the results. Once you’ve done that drop me an email with the details. You’ll find the “contact us” form in the about me section of my profile.

  • 5ghz Wireless Speed Drops Occasionally

    Hi,
I currently have BT Infinity 2 with an average of 74mb download speed, however after a few days the 5Ghz wi-fi speed drops to around 25mb (speed still at 74mb via ethernet cable) and after restarting the Home Hub 5, the 5Ghz wi-fi speed goes back to 74mb for a few days then it drops again and I have to restart the router again.
Is this normal or could it be wifi interference as there are lots of wifi spots around the building. It does not affect the 2.4Ghz band and a download speed of 74mb is only possible when connected using a 5Ghz band.
    Thank you.
    Ad1981

I would try changing the wireless channel:

  • I downloaded the newest version of Firefox while I was trying to access Yahoo! and now it is horribly, horribly slow. My Internet access is by dial-up. How can I speed things up or how can I get back my prevous version? What number was it?

I presume that the reason why it takes so much time for Firefox to load and then for me to get responses is because my Internet access if by dial-up. I need a less rich, or complicated, version of Firefox. The previous version was okay in terms of speed. What can I do to speed up the processing. Is it because I downloaded the version from the Yahoo website?

Try using this extension. <br />

  • After lion my internet is at dial up speed

A week after installing lion my internet has slowed to almost dial up speed, what do I do?

I'm having the exact same problems on my iMac (24-inch Early 2008).
    3.06 GHz Intel Core Due
    4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    Mac OS X Lion 10.7.1 (11B2118)
Ever since I upgraded to Lion, I've had apps freeze, system freezes, 5 min hangs on login, system crashes after login, freezes on shut down/restart attempts, etc., essentially rendering my iMac unsuable. I've done 4 reinstalls now, including a complete erase and reinstall at the Genius Bar, reset the PRAM, permissions repairs (hardware checks out fine), etc. The best results have been about 5 hours good functioning after the erase and reinstall, and then everything got corrupted again and I'm back to square one. Oh, and this is after phone support with Applecare and one trip to the Genius Bar, in case you were wondering-- I'm headed back to the Genius Bar again tomorrow, and my secret hope is that they can downgrade me back to Snow Leopard.
Either Lion is a lemon and not ready for prime time, or this is Apple's version of planned obsolescence: releasing software that cripples perfectly good hardware. I haven't had OS upgrade problems like this since my PC days and Windows 95. It makes me wonder if with all of Apple's success, quality is taking a big hit. If Apple has peaked and is headed downhill to be the next Microsoft, who will be the next Apple? I'm ready to switch.

  • WRT330N slow cable internet, speed drops significantly

I have been using a new WRT330N gaming router with firmware 1.00.4 and one day the connection speed drops to 10kb/s download speeds from every connected device(xbox360, vista, xp). I turned off the WRT330N router and connected my old WRT54G speedbooster router and my connection is back to 800kb/s. I did a factory restore to the 330N but after about 40 minutes the speed drops to 10kb/s again... I can't seem to figure out what is causing this to happen when my other router works just fine.

If possible try upgrading the firmware of the router keep on holding tightly the reset button in such a way that power light is blinking on the router & then do a complete network power cycle i.e., unplug the power cables from the modem & from the router & then plug in the power cable to the modem first once all the lights are solid green you could plug in the power cable to the router & check out it will definately work!!
Also, you need to do the advanced wireless settings such as Radio Band Frequency to 50,Frag thres=2306 & Rts thres=2307 & then uncheck a Block Anonymous Internet Requests & it will definately work!!!

  • Slow internet speed/ dropping internet

I am on the Bt Ifinity 2,  last year at summer time (8/10/2014) every thing was fine 59 mb/s down 19.55 mb/s up. bettween then and the 11/11/2014 speeds fell to 13.8mb/s down 10.24mb/s up. (mediafire link for page download for internet speeds http://www.mediafire.com/download/24vs7ra8pyl09qc/bt+stats.rar )
during this time untill the 19/11/2014 the internet would just drop randomly, 3,5,6 times a day commonly (not shown on the graph for due to no internet). the internet droped and the router was not connected to the internet shown by the ui in 192.168.1.254. internet speed is lower then the what was on the speed test so would strugle to steam youtube videos.
i thought that this was a throtling thing origionaly, but i tryed off peak time 1-4 AM the connection dropped slow speeds
we called a bt enginer out for the 19/11/2014 we a router replacement and some line was changed there was no internet dropping untill reasontly speeds increased slightly.
8/1/2015 I was downloading addons for battlefeild on my playstaion when the internet started dropping again the internet speed on speedtest.net showed a resonable speed of 30mb/s down 1.97mb/s up which should be fine for content consumption. well thats what i thought, youtube videos in 240p would not play.
in my oppinion it looks like bt has being throtiling my traffic, but i know bt only "manages p2p taffic during peak times"
any one know whats wrong, by the way there is know other users on the network at the time of the speed tests
    Thanks for reading

Next time your speeds are bad, or right now if they are now, please try this:
In order to rule out the Homehub as potentially being the device responsible for your speed loss, you can connect the Openreach modem directly to the PC and see if the speed improves.
To do that follow these steps:
Step 1: Remove the homehub from the modem cable
Step2: Connect your pc/laptop to the modem via the cable instead
Step3: Open network and sharing centre on windows and click set up a new connection or network
Step4: Connect to the internet then click make a new connection Broadband PPPoE
Step5: Username [email protected] and the password as BT
Step6: connect, If it doesn't,keep pressing try again until it does.
However, please note that this will stop any other access apart from the PC

  • FileSharing Transfer Speed Drops after sharing internet connection

    Hi Folks
Sometimes, when I copy files via FileSharing,
the speed drops exactly to the max. upload speed my internet connection has.
    = instead of 12 MB/s I got 600 ~700 KB/s.
I needed a bit of work to see this connection.
But after a while, it changes back to normal.
However, I did share the ethernet-internet-connection from one machine via WiFi (to surf with an iPod Touch).
Could that initiate this problem? I believe so.
    Internet-Provider is cablecom, switzerland, zurich.
I use a Zyxel Ethernet Switch to connect  two macs with the cablecom-modem (and together).
So Idetached the cablecom-modem from the ZyXel Switch and restarted both machines.
Now, the copy-action via filesharing has the expected full speed. (Just no internet, of course).
After that I connected the Cablecom-Modem again,
    restarted (PowerOff/On) the ZyXel Switch,
    and tried the same again:
    Now the speed is slow.
It seems that I really should NOT share the Ethernet Internet Connection with WiFi
Won't do that anymore because I often copy files from one machine to the other and this slow transfer speed kills me.
Why is that affecting the connection between two local machines?
How can I reset this to "normal".
I hope there is a way to do it in OS X instead of waiting until it sets itself  to "normal" from cablecom's side.
[ -Despite the fact that I should use a wireless router- ]
Is there any chance that this is an issue that OS X could resolve?
Best would probably be: the local connection between two machines should not be affected by the provider in any circumstances.
BTW: The cablecom-modem gives - via a ZyXel Switch - both computers unique IP's and they are reachable/visible from the internet.
    Greetings from Zurich
    Alain Burki
    If my English is bad
    please forgive me

I am doing the same thing (have tried it occasionally over the past 6 months or so and cannot install Arch because of it)...sad panda.  The downloads start fast (up to 5MB/s), then when it gets to 49% it slows all the way down until it gives up and moves to the next mirror, repeating and repeating and repeating until finally it shows:
        core is up to date
error: failed to update extra (download library error)
error: failed to update community (download library error)
:: There are 51 members in group base
        :: Repository core
Enter a selection (default=all): error: failed to prepare transaction (could not find database)
I've tried commenting out the XferCommand and using wget but that fails even worse.
Thank you for posting this, I am glad I am not the only one experienceing this.  I was about to give up searching and post too.

  • Sudden internet speed drop

I am a BT user for a long time now and since I had very few problems with the internet. Started last week, my and other people's internet(some of my friends also have problems with the internet just like me) in my area (aberdeen, tillydrone) became very slow. For example my speed is: 300 kbps download speed and 600 kbps upload. I am suprised that my upload speed is more. The thing I am asking is that while I pay for an 8 Mbit internet why do I get 300 kbps right now?
I have cheked the connections got new cables for everything it is still the same, even tested the router if is has any faults but it doesnt have any. I dont know if there is any maintenance in my area because I havent recieved a paper saying anything about any problems at that area. Please help! I am out of options and I am getting tired with this incredible slow internet.
    Thank you

  • Dial up speeds every evening for weeks Tidewater, VA

My DSL has slowed to dial up speeds beginning around 5 pm and flucuating widely in speed until 11 pm. I tried all the remedies for slow speed as I have done in the past but they have not helped. Any time I've had problems Verizon dsl it has been with the wiring leading to the house not in the house.  I still using the same Westell Modem I was given 2001!  Would a newer modem help ? Is anyone experiencing the same problem in the Tidewater ,VA area. Could the number of people streaming movies during the Holidays cause the slow speed ?

I live in the same area.  I'm not having problems with FiOS, but when I was with COX cable the quality was very erratic in the evenings. (internet and TV)  Sometimes to the point where I would turn everything off and grab a book.
Those underground wires (cable or DSL) are old and problematic.  Most of my problems were also exterior cables. It would cost a LOT of money to replace them so neither company is likely to do anymore than necessary.
Nothing lasts forever so a 12 year old modem may be part of the problem.  The only way to know for sure is to replace it. If you can find a compatible model at Best Buy, you can try it then return it if there's no difference.  Verizon may replace it for free, but I'm inclined to doubt it.
The number of other users online could definitely cause slow speed.  I've noticed a decrease in my connect speed when streaming from Amazon.  It's still high enough that video quality hasn't been effected, but it has dropped.  If it is noticeable on FiOS, it's probably worse on DSL.

  • My AppleTV will not play anything over Air Play.  Every other function works perfectly, and my Internet/router are working at top speed.  I can watch HD Netflix and YouTube but nothing via my iTunes library on my MacBook or iPad.  All software is updated.

Every other function works perfectly, and my Internet/router are working at top speed.  I can watch HD Netflix and YouTube but nothing via my iTunes library on my MacBook or iPad.  All software is updated.  The AppleTV will recognize that Air Play is trying to do it's thing, but with music files it sounds like they're skipping and video files just load endlessly.

I'm searching for an answer to almost the same exact problem, using almost the same exact hardware and software. Has an answer been found?
The files that I'm trying to burn come from eMusic, and they are formatted mp3. Recently, (after the iTunes update to 9.2.3?,) they would not drag and drop from iTunes into Toast. From several different discussions I've tried working around this by dragging to the desktop first then dragging and dropping to Toast, going to Toast from a programmer's homemade help window, " iToons," and today, after talking with Apple support, going directly to Toast from my eMusic folder. Alas, all recordings do not perform like they use to. Sometimes they play and sometimes not. There is one I managed, that is listenable, but sometimes I have to put it in my car stereo over and over again as it gets ejected with an error code, sometimes, finally it takes it... Some of the recordings on other disks I've burned are not clean - they have white-noise sounds creeping in... I use to have none of these problems. One time as I was listening to a CD that managed to play, and it just stopped playing... Is there an answer out there to get back to how it use to be? Thanks for you help.

  • Big speed drop!!

Hey, ive had BT Infinity for just over a month now, pay for upto 76mb, it started off fine, but the speed over the last 2/3 weeks it has intervals of serious drop in speed, these can last upto a day or 2! This happened again to me yesterday the download speed dropped during the evening and by the night it was below 1mb, during the next day it went up to 15mb but now again during the night its dropped below 1mb as the result below shows.
im quite experienced with Internet etc, so done all the basic tests etc restarted router, pc, disconnected all wireless devices but still having this problem?!
i also live within a stones throw of the exchange so that isnt the problem either!
If anyone else has this problem or know any solutions they will be much appreciated

As you can see on the stats you have posted, your IP profile is 70.37Mbps the data rate for your line is 72.59Mbps and your max data rate is 72.69Mbps with the noise margin at 6.5. This would indicate no problem with your actual connection.
Have you tried a speed test with your PC turned off/disconnected from the network. It could be something running on it that is slowing your network down.

  • Huge speed drop and connection problem when answer...

About 2 days ago my internet speed dropped hugely and it's almost now unuseable.  I've run a speed test and the results are below. Any idea on what to do to get this resolved?
Also, every time I answer a call or disconnect a call the broadband connection is los which is very annoying! Again, any ideas about thats causing that?
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
    Download  Speed
    102 Kbps
    0 Kbps
    250 Kbps
    Max Achievable Speed
Download speedachieved during the test was - 102 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-250 Kbps.
     Additional Information:
     Your DSL Connection Rate :2432 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 135 Kbps

AndyMc what you have supplied is the wireless connection rate between the router and your wireless adapter this is not related to anything from Bt. This is the connection rate which I am sure would be related to a channel issue more than the connection dropping. Here is a link to the help site that will assist especially the link with regards changing the wireless channels. http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/11381/c/346,1887,1889
Make the change and then disconnect and reconnect the wireless and notice if the connection rate changes. I am sure you will get some interesting results. A good little tool you can use is an utility called inSSIDer just do a google search and install that, it will show you where there may be a conflicting channel issue,  the non shared channels are 1.6.and 11. If you need to diagnose the dropping connection problem then that is a different issue to the connection one.
