  • Internet speed drops 85% when routed through WRT160NL

I have a WRT160NL, and it decreases my internet speed from 3700kbps down to 550kbps when I route through it.
My ADSL modem is connected via ethernet cable to the WRT160NL, then I have an ethernet cable from port#1 of the WRT160NL to my desktop computer. With this connection, I get a download of about 550kbps.
When I route directly from my ADSL modem to my desktop (bypassing the WRT160NL) my download speed is 3700kbps. I've checked all cables and connections. What is causing the speed to drop by 85%?
    thanks,

As you are facing the problem on your Hardwired computer, then you change the settings on your Router... Once you login to the Router setup page.. Below the Setup you will find MTU size which will be set to AUTO so you need to change it to Manual and change the Size from 1500 to 1365 and click on Save Settings..... Then click on the Security tab and Disable "SPI Firewall" and Uncheck "Filter Anonymous Internet Requests" and click on Save Settings...
Now you need to power cycle your Network... Unplug the Power from the Router and Modem, Wait for 30seconds and then plug the Power to the Modem, Once all the Lights are lid on the Modem then Plug the Power to the Linksys Router...
Now you can check the Speed, what the speed you are getting it on your Computer....
If you still face the same problem then i think you need to upgrade the firmware of your Router.. Go to website linksysbycisco.com/downloads.........insert model no of your router in serach tab......select proper version of your router........download the firmware file......save that file on desktop....
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
    Now reset your router :
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

  • Internet speed dropped to dial-up speed!

*(It took me about 15mins to get to this page)*
There seems to be something wrong with my Mac when i opened it up today; the internet speed has dropped right down to below dial up speed, yet all the other computers in the house are running fine at broadband speed.
    Hope you can help!
    Thankyou very much in advance!

The following usually works on both Tiger and Leopard:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
    form values
    download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
    com.apple.Safari.plist
    Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.
If not, MacFixit have published a very detailed (very!) article on speeding up a slow Safari, here:
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070416000657464
Many, including me, have also followed the advice given by others here to add DNS codes to their Network Settings, with good results in terms of speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.220
    208.67.220.222
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
    Restart Safari, and repair permissions.

  • WRT330N slow cable internet, speed drops significantly

I have been using a new WRT330N gaming router with firmware 1.00.4 and one day the connection speed drops to 10kb/s download speeds from every connected device(xbox360, vista, xp). I turned off the WRT330N router and connected my old WRT54G speedbooster router and my connection is back to 800kb/s. I did a factory restore to the 330N but after about 40 minutes the speed drops to 10kb/s again... I can't seem to figure out what is causing this to happen when my other router works just fine.

If possible try upgrading the firmware of the router keep on holding tightly the reset button in such a way that power light is blinking on the router & then do a complete network power cycle i.e., unplug the power cables from the modem & from the router & then plug in the power cable to the modem first once all the lights are solid green you could plug in the power cable to the router & check out it will definately work!!
Also, you need to do the advanced wireless settings such as Radio Band Frequency to 50,Frag thres=2306 & Rts thres=2307 & then uncheck a Block Anonymous Internet Requests & it will definately work!!!

  • Slow internet speed/ dropping internet

I am on the Bt Ifinity 2,  last year at summer time (8/10/2014) every thing was fine 59 mb/s down 19.55 mb/s up. bettween then and the 11/11/2014 speeds fell to 13.8mb/s down 10.24mb/s up. (mediafire link for page download for internet speeds http://www.mediafire.com/download/24vs7ra8pyl09qc/bt+stats.rar )
during this time untill the 19/11/2014 the internet would just drop randomly, 3,5,6 times a day commonly (not shown on the graph for due to no internet). the internet droped and the router was not connected to the internet shown by the ui in 192.168.1.254. internet speed is lower then the what was on the speed test so would strugle to steam youtube videos.
i thought that this was a throtling thing origionaly, but i tryed off peak time 1-4 AM the connection dropped slow speeds
we called a bt enginer out for the 19/11/2014 we a router replacement and some line was changed there was no internet dropping untill reasontly speeds increased slightly.
8/1/2015 I was downloading addons for battlefeild on my playstaion when the internet started dropping again the internet speed on speedtest.net showed a resonable speed of 30mb/s down 1.97mb/s up which should be fine for content consumption. well thats what i thought, youtube videos in 240p would not play.
in my oppinion it looks like bt has being throtiling my traffic, but i know bt only "manages p2p taffic during peak times"
any one know whats wrong, by the way there is know other users on the network at the time of the speed tests
    Thanks for reading

Next time your speeds are bad, or right now if they are now, please try this:
In order to rule out the Homehub as potentially being the device responsible for your speed loss, you can connect the Openreach modem directly to the PC and see if the speed improves.
To do that follow these steps:
Step 1: Remove the homehub from the modem cable
Step2: Connect your pc/laptop to the modem via the cable instead
Step3: Open network and sharing centre on windows and click set up a new connection or network
Step4: Connect to the internet then click make a new connection Broadband PPPoE
Step5: Username [email protected] and the password as BT
Step6: connect, If it doesn't,keep pressing try again until it does.
However, please note that this will stop any other access apart from the PC

  • Internet speed dropped from 2Mbps to 135Kbps for p...

    Hi,
Until last week i had 2Mbps internet which was fine and stable, then it suddenly dropped to 135K.
I did not change anything on my network to caus this
I have tried a different router/cables/microfilters and virus checked with avira and malwarebytes none of which did anything so i am convinced it is an external problem.
I called india who reckoned i had 6Meg available.
Please can you find out if anything has changed somewhere else in your network or with my account that would cause this.
    here is the speedtest results
Download speedachieved during the test was - 114 Kbps

Hi Welcome Your IP Profile has dropped because of a noise issue on your line causing the exchange equipment to see your line as unstable normally the profile will rise within a period of 3/5 days providing there are no restarts on your hub.
Some exchanges are now using a new profiling system that gives 88.2% of your connection speed the profile change on these exchanges is immediate at the new connection speed all you can do is wait while the exchange equipment restores your profile

  • Internet Speeds drop drastically on all devices when one device is streaming media

As described in the title, when one of the devices on my home network begins streaming media, speeds are drastically reduced across all of the devices.
Comcast has always stated that you can do whatever you want on any device without it affecting the other devices in your home.... but streaming on one device brings all the other devices in my home to a crawl.
This was always the one thing that set Comcast apart from AT&T in my opinion, and if this is no longer the case, then Comcast can say goodbye to my subscription.
I am paying the extra $10/mo for Blast internet also.... and this is completely unacceptable.

exactly the same experience here, installed the xfinity app on an ipad, and when someone is streaming to said IPAD from the xfinity app, the other wireless connections in the house become practically unusable.  Even wired connections to the modem/router itself start lagging out. Even something simple as looking at a forum and making a post is almost impossible if someone is streaming a t.v. show. Clearly not what is advertised. Really dissappointed.

  • EA6700 Internet speed drops

    Hi,
    I recently purchased a brand new EA6700.
Installed it prperly and started surfing from several devices such as Laptop, ipad and iphone.
Though the new router slows download speed from 15Mbps to approx. 2-5Mbps.
    My network looks like this:
ADSL ROUTER-MODEM Siemens SL2-141 and now EA6700 connected to it using CAT5e(from SL2 LAN port to EA6700's internet port)
After reading almost everything written here, I have done several tweaks yet no success.
Switched ports at the SL2 ROUTER-MODEM.
    Disabled media prioritization at EA6700.
Disabled PPPoE at the SL2 and set it at the EA6700 by that changing from the DHCP and the double NAT situation I had before.
Reset the EA6700 to factory default and reinstall it manually.
I also wish to inform you that my router's firmware is up to date (1.1.38.149770).
There is no difference beetween a wired speed test and a wireless one.
The only tweak that I can recall that helped just a bit was setting the EA6700 at Bridge mode but still it had not solved the problem.
I'm pretty sure the problam is not the SL2-141 or its connection to the EA6700 since before that router I had an Edimax router which was connected the same way and preformed perfectly with the SL2-141 for several years.
I have no idea how to proceed from this spot, ANY HELP WILL BE APPRECIATED!

    Hi,
When you set the PPPoE dialer on the EA6700, have you tried setting up the MTU as well? Based on this link, MTU must be 1492 (or lower) when using PPPoE connectivity. Check the following links on finding your optimum MTU setting:
How do I optimize my MTU and RWIN settings?
How do I find my optimum MTU setting?
    Hope this helps.
If everyone needs to believe in something, I believe I'll have another beer..

  • Sudden internet speed drop

I am a BT user for a long time now and since I had very few problems with the internet. Started last week, my and other people's internet(some of my friends also have problems with the internet just like me) in my area (aberdeen, tillydrone) became very slow. For example my speed is: 300 kbps download speed and 600 kbps upload. I am suprised that my upload speed is more. The thing I am asking is that while I pay for an 8 Mbit internet why do I get 300 kbps right now?
I have cheked the connections got new cables for everything it is still the same, even tested the router if is has any faults but it doesnt have any. I dont know if there is any maintenance in my area because I havent recieved a paper saying anything about any problems at that area. Please help! I am out of options and I am getting tired with this incredible slow internet.
    Thank you

I am very unhappy with the broadband speed. You advertise a 8Mbit broadband speed, but in reality it is hardly 500kbit on average and in the last two weeks it is SO SLOW that it takes 3 days and 4 nights to download a single video on youtube in 240p quality. If I were not on a contract with you I would abandon your service long time ago. My postcode is AB24 1WS .

  • Internet speed drop to 100mbps from 1gbps

my internet was Qualcomm Atheros AR8151 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.20)

The speed is dependent on the slowest
network port. Are both ports gigabit? for some adapters you can set it to 100 mbps manually.

  • Huge speed drop and connection problem when answer...

About 2 days ago my internet speed dropped hugely and it's almost now unuseable.  I've run a speed test and the results are below. Any idea on what to do to get this resolved?
Also, every time I answer a call or disconnect a call the broadband connection is los which is very annoying! Again, any ideas about thats causing that?
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
    Download  Speed

    250 Kbps
    Max Achievable Speed
Download speedachieved during the test was - 102 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-250 Kbps.
     Additional Information:
     Your DSL Connection Rate :2432 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 135 Kbps

AndyMc what you have supplied is the wireless connection rate between the router and your wireless adapter this is not related to anything from Bt. This is the connection rate which I am sure would be related to a channel issue more than the connection dropping. Here is a link to the help site that will assist especially the link with regards changing the wireless channels. http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/11381/c/346,1887,1889
Make the change and then disconnect and reconnect the wireless and notice if the connection rate changes. I am sure you will get some interesting results. A good little tool you can use is an utility called inSSIDer just do a google search and install that, it will show you where there may be a conflicting channel issue,  the non shared channels are 1.6.and 11. If you need to diagnose the dropping connection problem then that is a different issue to the connection one.

  • Internet speed deterioration..

Wonder why, over time, my internet speed drops from 23 mps down to 2 or 3 mps and I am forced to restart my cisco modem and cisco router to see the speed return to 23 or more mbs. Is there something that I can do to stop this from happening. I am with Xfinity Cable.

    Hi,
What device and IOS are you running? Could be you are running into memory leak issues. Have you tried upgrading to new IOS?
    Thanks

  • Speed dropped last week and hasn't recovered...

    Hi,
So my internet speed dropped significantly last week and hasn't recovered. I'm wondering if I need a manual intervention to reset my profile but hopefully someone more ADSL-knowledgeable out there can assist. Note as a professional software engineer I'm reasonably tech savvy, and have taken all the usual steps:
    * Router is now permanently plugged into the test socket, and has been for weeks, ruling out any internal wiring
    * Have tried different routers. I found the HomeHub4 to be unstable (needing to be factory reset regularly) so am currently running with a TP-Link N600 which has been rock solid since powering on weeks ago.
    * Firmware in router up to date, no viruses or spyware on any attached devices
    * Speed checks all the same regardless of device (phone, tablet, laptop) or connection method (wired, wireless 2.4GHz, wireless 5GHz)
    * Router resets made no difference
    * Until I switched to BT a couple of months ago I had rock solid 8 to 10 megs download (definitely starting to wish I hadn't switched from Sky, although they had their own set of issues!). In fact until a week ago BT's speed had been pretty reliable, sometimes as low as 8 megs download, but sometimes up to 14 megs download.
Here are the stats from the router:
I have also run various speed tests (including BT and BT wholesale) which all confirm the same results. Ping times around 45ms, download speed 1.95 meg, upload speed 0.75 meg. It has been many years since I have experienced such a low internet download speed, and it is only just capable of streaming low resolution content, HD is definitely off the cards!
Looking at the router stats that SNR Margin looks high? I'm assuming my low sync rate is due to that? However I can't see anything that has changed physically in my setup in the last week. Could be exchange-side? Also note I did the "quiet line" test by calling 17070 (option 2). No obvious noise, just a very quiet digital hiss (I'll try to get an analogue phone and do the test again). However it sounded pretty clean to my ears.
Finally samknows tell me my exchange is 1038 metres away and I should expect at least 6.5 meg download.
So I'm a little bewildered why I'm now having to live with such poor download speed when for at least the last 4 or 5 years I've consistently had at least 6 meg download and usually somewhere between 8 and 10 meg (and as you can see from the router stats it was as high as 14 meg since the router was powered on).
If I could upgrade to Infinity or Virgin cable I would do so in a heartbeat but sadly neither are in my street. I was hoping that with a few days of stable connection my speed would increase but this hasn't happened. Any assistance or advice on the above would be very much appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Tich
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi,
Many thanks - I had no awareness of "banded" profiles before! Sadly I just did a last-ditch router reset this morning to see if it would assist (before posting here). Previously it had been up for 5+ days with no resets, and a very stable (but slow!) 2 meg download speed. My current connection time is 0 day(s) 01:11:18 so obviously far less than 3 to 5 days. Willing to wait another 3 to 5 days to see if it improves, but I did that last week to no avail (kicking myself for not screen grabbing my uptime prior to resetting this morning now!).
Is there anything else I should do other than wait another 3 to 5 days and post again confirming a continuation of the problem?
    Cheers,
    Tich

  • Drastic speed drop using AirPort

I have an AirPort Extreme that's about 3 weeks old and another from a couple years ago (dome style). Both exhibit the same problem, though the new one shows it much more often. After some period of time of use (or inactivity) of 10 - 20 minutes my internet speed drops from 4 Mb/s to 0.5 Mb/s. The only way to get the speed back is to reboot the AirPort. I check the speed using speedtest.net. Not only is the speed slower, but many web pages simply refuse to load and Mail never finishes fetching headers. Outgoing mail won't send. Also, I always have 4 bars of signal strength even when this happens.
I've talked to my ISP while it's happening and they confirm a 4 Mb/s speed, but said my "router was throwing back a lot of strange data". I could ask for more details if I knew what to ask about. I'm using a wireless internet (not satellite, but line of sight to a tower), but I don't know what that would have to do with this.
Anything else I can check? Any tools that would help expose the problem?
