Internet speed in Snow Leopard slows down because of connected External HDD

I have two external Iomega harddrives that I connect through FireWire 800 to my MacBook Pro 17".
I noticed, when the harddrives are plugged in, safari lags and slows down tremendously. As I eject my harddrives from my MacBook Pro, the internet miraculously comes back at normal speed. The harddrives are just mounted, no data is being transferred.
I am not sure why this is, or why external harddrives would bother my internet connection. I am connected through my Airport wirelessly to my home router. Other computers get wireless internet fine as I notice this problem with my MacBook Pro.
Anyone know why this is happening and how to stop it? I notice restarting sometimes helps, but this problem comes back after awhile.
Also while I am mentioning this, I also notice the internet slow down when the MacBook Pro runs on battery. Anyone know why this is, and how to fix it as well?
Thank you, and Happy Holidays to all!

I do not notice any connection between my external harddrives being connected and internet connection no more. So that is good.
What I have been noticing though, is my MacBook Pro at some points loosing connection to the internet. The Airport icon in the menu bar says it is connected to my wireless internet at full reception. But at times Safari and Firefox are just not working. I try reseting my internet routers and the problem still exists. It comes down to me having to restart my MacBook Pro, which seems to fix the issue.
I have a iBook G3 with Tiger, and a Dell laptop with XP, and they both receive wireless internet fine when in use. And this is while my MacBook Pro is not.
I am not sure what the issue is now. Right now I'm not sure if there is anything I can do to fix this besides contacting apple and using my applecare.
Is there any internet connection problems similar to what I just described I should be aware of? Thanks in advance!

  • How do you monitor internet speeds in Snow Leopard?

I use an Apple Airport Extreme to connect wirelessly to the internet. It is connected to a Thomson modem (TG585 V7). I've recently switched ISP's and am in the process of an upgrade to ADSL2 and I want to be able to check my internet speeds to make sure I'm getting what I'm paying for. The thing is, I don't know how to check on the speeds. If I was connected directly to the modem, I "think" I could check the modem stats (or so I've been told), but that's not the case.
SO - does anyone know how to check internet up/down speeds using Snow Leopard?
    Thanks.

    A few things.
This speed test tool gives you the results in both bits and bytes (bottom of the page) so you don't have to convert.
    http://speakeasy.net/speedtest/
Second, the Airport channel probably won't have much effect unless your signal is really bad. The reason is that your local wireless connection has a much higher capacity than your modem connection. The local network is usually not the bottleneck, your connection to the Internet is.
Also, my Airport base station has an "Automatic" option so that it picks the channel with the best signal. You could leave it on that.
Finally, you can monitor network throughput in real time by using your Activity Monitor and clicking the Network tab. You'll see Data received/sec and Data sent/sec.

  • Unable to connect Officejet 6500 and Wireless internet simultaneously in Snow Leopard

    Hi,
I am using Mac OS Snow Leopard and Officejet 6500. Before upgrading to Snow Leopard, I was able to connect both my printer and my wireless internet simultaneously (Leopard OS). However, after upgrading to Snow Leopard, I'm able to connect only one of them at a time which is really very inconvenient. Whenever I need to print, I need to manually select "hpsetup" from the Airport drop down and wait for it connect. This disconnects my internet. Then I need to select my wireless internet option in the Airport drop down again once I'm done with the printing.
This is defeating the entire purpose of a wireless printer. Guessing that its a problem with HP developing the required driver for Snow Leopard. I've already downloaded the driver meant for Snow Leopard but this is not solving the problem.
Also, would like to know whether its a problem with everyone or specific to me?

OK, great questions.  I'll try to address them by number:
    2. I do not think this is possible.  I think your printer was initially connected to your router and has recently fallen off (thus broadcasting 'hpsetup').  Sorry, I am not saying you are lying, but I do not think it is possible without two radios.
    3. a.  Yes, you can only talk to one device at a time through your computer's wireless radio.
    3. b.  You can attach your printer wirelessly in case you need to move it, but....see "c" below.
    3. c. I would recommend that you attach your printer via a wired connection (Ethernet cable) to your router if you can.  It is by far easier to set up and more reliable in the long run.  I can help.
The wired and wireless sides of a router talk to each other.  By the time it gets to the router it really does not care if the connection is by wire or wireless, it treats all "clients" the same.  That is why I recommend to wire your printer to your router and keep a wireless connection between your computer and router.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • Re speeding up track then slowing down

    Hi..
I have a battery toy ... which I have recorded the sound from. This goes on to an animation and I need the track to distort and speed up and then slow down as for winding down... any help please would be very welcome.
Also it goes underwater from time to time.....

Go to applications > utilities > activity monitor
Sort them by cpu usage and if there are programs that are taking up a massive amount of cpu, then you should quit those apps. If you are watching videos on the internet (especially youtube videos) that will take up a lot of cpu.

  • Copying speed of files has slowed down significantly

copying speed of files has slowed down significantly
and if initiate two different copy processes then it slows so much that 1 GB data takes time like it was 15GB

Again, it depends on file types. Sometimes Apple files are not single files but packages of many smaller files, for example the iPhoto Library. Right-click in Finder, if there's "Show Package Contents", then it is technically not a single file.
For simple file transfer from one machine to another per USB drive, it can save some time to zip the data before and after transfer to and from the USB drive.

  • Imposible continue the installation of Snow leopard 10.6 on a 1TB external hard disk, what can I do?

Imposible continue with the installation of Snow leopard 10.6 on a 1TB external hard disk. I did the same last year and I continued working but suddenly appeared the simbol with a folder and a question mark and I know this is a problem so I click in the format option to the hard disk and when I tried to install again Snow Leopard, 'cause I want to recover my backups with Time Machine, I couldn't continue because the installation didn't respond to the click in the Utilities option or to next step > continue . Please, What can I do? I'll wait for your answers. Thank you so much in advance.

    Hello Melophage,
It is the original hard drive which should have been erased by the previous owner. The problem is, I cannot access it without any OS installed. Or maybe there is a bootable USB or DVD that can do it ?
Just an indication: when I boot without CD inserted in it, it shows a grey folder icon with a questionmark like this one:
    Thank you for your help
PS: Yes, I am interested by the replacement pair of grey installation DVDs for my model. Where can I purchase this ?

  • Slow firewire transfer speed in Snow Leopard

    Hello,
Everything works fine in Snow Leopard, besides copying large files to my external Freecom firewire hard drives. Having a dual boot system with also Leopard installed, the problem only exists in Snow Leopard. NVRAM/PRAM reset doesn't help.
Does anyone have a clue ?
    Thanks in advance,
    Beliarus

I have a FireWire 400 HD, it has a JMicron chipset (pretty generic but works great). I worked wonderfully on Leopard without a single glitch ever.
Now, after upgrading to SL, I experience the same as you and the drive is not responding well, hanging constantly and experiencing really slow transfer rates, that make it unusable (all applications that try to open something from it eventually hang). It's not a temporary glitch, even after several reboots and connecting/disconnecting the drive. The same drive under USB2 (it also has USB2 interface) works perfect (but I really want my firewire back).
I hope Apple fixes it! Definitely a bug.

  • Safari on Snow Leopard slow

I have loved safari 4 and have used it dedicatedly on leopard with ad block for the last 1 year. However, since I upgraded to snow leopard, and not having ad block, I feel safari is extremely slow. Is anyone else experiencing such a speed drop?

I have the same issue. Pages that were nearly instant before are now exceedingly slow (www.google.com, for example, takes about 7 seconds). I have several other computers on the same network that are either running Leopard or Windows that don't have this problem, so it's not a DNS issue. I've also verified that my network connection isn't saturated.
    I've tried the following:
    * Resetting Safari
    * Emptying the cache
    * Repairing permissions
    * Deleting all subfolders of ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari
    * Deleting Downloads.plist, History.plist, and LastSession.plist
    * Removing everything from both the system and account copies of the InputMethods and Internet Plugins folders
This should essentially be a clean install of Safari, but it is still exceedingly slow. Note that it's not consistent: it will load a page quickly then, 5 seconds later, the same page will take a very long time to load.
Sometimes, most of the items on the page will come in nearly instantaneously, but suddenly the page will stop loading for a good 5 to 10 seconds. Once that time elapses, the rest of the page suddenly downloads.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

  • Snow leopard slower than ever

    Hello there,
Since I've installed Snow Leopard ( one year ago...) my mac is slower than ever at the launch ( more than 40 seconds).
I did my best to clean it with Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner, OnyX. ( It fixed my problem of the multicolored circle which was boring me on iPhoto or When i was on Internet...).
I've checked and fixed the disc, it looks ok.
I've delted the soft which started at the launch
I'd like to upgrade my mac to Lion... but first I need to find  what makes it slow.
    What's wrong please?
    Looking forward hearing from helpers

Check this out... Closing down is very fast... here are the errors for the launch
    How can i do? Thanks

  • Snow Leopard slows to a crawl...

I have a two-year old iMac that I upgraded to Snow Leopard. Since then the system runs incredibly slow, as though the processor's time is suddenly being hogged by something. After a complete shutdown things work better for awhile. Also it seems to backup and sync with MobileMe more often, which will also slow things down quite a bit.
On my relatively new MacBook Pro the upgrade has worked great. Significantly faster all around.
Is anyone at Apple reading these posts?

Same here, It is so slow it is unusable.
It is so slow my network won't even start (ir it migh be anither problem).
It is not frozen, if you stay long enough you may notice something moving every half hour or so.
My machine is brand new, the only 2 apps I installed are Skype and VmWare Fusion. Unplugged all external devices, power in that is it. Rebooted twice (takes almost 20minutes) still no go.
I am new to Mac so I am definitly good at troubleshooting on Mac OSX.
Dissapointed... I bought a Mac because they simply work...

  • My internet speed suddenly went VERY slow on all browser

    I am running on a Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5, 2 Ghz Intel i7, 4GB Ram DDR3.
I am experiencing very slow internet speed after some system update some time ago.
I have tried using wireless and LAN cable but both results the same.
I've tried resetting routers in both my office and home but it is still as disappointing.
Kindly advice on what to do? I've forgotten which update is it as it is some time ago already.
I have installed bootcamp in my macbook and tried the using from windows but there isn't such issue. The internet was smooth and great.

    Try these basic troubleshooting steps.
    1. Quit all app scompletely and restart the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
    2. Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
    3. Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

  • Just upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard - slow slow slow

macbook has slowed - molasses in winter slow.
slow to switch aps, slow to save, aps freezing requiring force quit.
have 1Gb ram and plenty disk space - 15Gb+

Snow Leopard should work fine on your system. First, if you're still at 10.3, install the 10.6.8 combo update from: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399 . Use Disk Utility to repair permissions, then install the combo update, then repair permissions again.
Next, you have 15GB empty hard drive space ... you want 10% to 15%+ free for systems usage. If it's below 10%, then you need to free up space, otherwise the system will crawl.
Download Smart Utility from http://www.volitans-software.com/smart_utility.php . It will give you insight into the health of your hard drive.
Run the Apple hardware test to see if there are any obvious hardware issues. Find the original OS X disks, and insert the one that says 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label. Reboot holding the alt/option key down (might work holding the D key down too), choose the Apple hardware test, and when prompted choose the extended test. While in the extended test, you might push command and L to make it loop several times. Sometimes hardware issues don't show up on one run.
