Internet speed issues when macbook pro joins Airport Network

I have an apple tv, two iphones, a PC and a macbook sharing a Airport Extreme internet connection.
The problem is that all devices are working on full internet speed until i connect my macbook pro late 2009.
Normaly i have a download speed at 650kb/s but when the macbook connects to the Airport extreme the internet speed is jumping between 20kb/s and 200kb/s
The unusual thing are the jumps and drops of the speed.
When i shut down the Macbook all other devices are running on normal internet speed and the internet connection is not jumping anymore.
What the **** is going on?

SOLUTION FOUND to MacBook Pro poor Wi-Fi wireless signal.
First, let's talk about the actual problem: too much signal noise. There is a hidden app in OSX called "Wi-Fi Diagnostics" This will tell you everything you need to know why your Wi-Fi is not working!
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5606
HINT: It is included in 10.7, just look for it.
The solution!
Turn off your wi-fi and run your internet through your home's electrical wires. Power-line adapters are devices that turn a home's electrical wiring into network cables for a computer network.

I purchased TP-LINK TL-PA511 and for the first time I'm downloading with ALL my internet speed (30mb down / 5mb up) tested via www.speedtest.net. I'M SOOOOO HAPPY!!!!

  • Internet Speed Issues w/ MacBook Pro

I've been having problems with my internet connection and speed using my MacBook Pro. Using speedtest.net, and connected directly to my modem, the highest download speed I've reached is 4.03 Mbps. Connecting using my wireless router (D-Link DIR 655) I only get 2.33 Mbps. Using my roommates new unibody MacBook Pro, I was able to reach 18 Mbps, wirelessly 15.03. I called my service provider, Rogers, and they said the line to my house is fine. Their tests indicated that my download speed should be approximately 10 Mbps. Regularly, I have to turn airport on and off in order to get things working properly. Occasionally, I have to reset my modem. I'm trying to understand why there would be a difference between the two MacBooks. Clearly there is an issue with mine. Can anyone recommend possible remedies for this issue, or at least some things I could try out? Thanks very much.

  • Trouble with MacBook Pro finding AirPort networks

I recently bought a new (refurbished) MacBook Pro (15", 1.83GHz), to replace my old iBook, which was one of the early white models, circa 2001.
Everything about my new computer is wonderful, of course, except that every time I boot up, wake from sleep, or turn on the AirPort, it takes up to a full minute for the AirPort to find any open networks. This happens at school (where there are AirPort base stations all over the place), at home (where we have a Belkin router, and several neighbors have others), and at my parents' house (where they have a linksys router). It doesn't seem to matter whether the networks use encryption or not, nor how close or far I am from the nearest router. If I know the name of a nearby open network and type it in, I can get it, usually. On my old iBook, I had a little trouble with some of the networks at school sometimes, but never with this kind of delay across the board, and certainly never at home nor at my parents'.
Also, at home, when the the AirPort finally does find the available networks, it NEVER chooses my router first, even though it's the only one in the neighborhood that I listed under "Preferred Networks."
I've read some similar posts, dealing with problems with accessing encrypted networks, but nothing seemed to address my particular issue. It might be a defect with the AirPort or firmware, but I wanted to check, first.
(Oh, and I'm not a complete newbie, but tech-speak often goes over my head. Please keep it simple.)
    Thanks!

This is how I fixed the problem on my MBP.
Go to Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences
    Delete the folder SystemConfiguration
Go to System Prefrences > Network > Show+Network Port Configuration. Check Airport and Built-in Ethernet and make sure Airport is on the top of the list.
Reconfigure your wep passwords and it should work. Worked for me. Also, you will have to redo your power settings.

  • USB modem issues on MacBook Pro (UK 3 network) - keeps trying to install!

I've a 3UK USB E160G modem on PAYG that I use with my MacBook Pro (late 2008). Device is installed and works no problems. But each time I connect it, it starts the installer again. At first it was no big deal, just exit out of it, but its really starting to bug me now. Can anyone here advise if I can stop this happening and how? Im using Leopard on 10.5.5
    Cheers!

I did try that unfortunately, but I can't even get the 'df' command to display the partitions.  So the 'find' command doesn't work and running grub-install simply gets me something like 'file not found'
Chakra also failed, so I may be headed back to Ubuntu.  I love the hardware side of my mac, but am so freaking tired of dealing with EFI.
After 6 months of 'easy' linux I thought I was ready for something a bit more challenging, but I guess I am not up to the task.

  • Error when attempting to join Airport Network

My iMac G4 17" flat panel has been unable to connect to my wireless Linksys router.
I recently did a software update which I hadn't done in some time, plus we finally got around to adding a WEP password as Comcast was telling me that's why we kept getting booted off the internet. Anyway, my iBook and two other PC notebooks can connect without a problem, but I can't get the iMac to join.
Sometimes it won't even find the base station. I don't understand why I get four bars on my iBook sitting right next to the iMac which can't even find the Linksys or the Airport Express I have 30 feet away connected to my stereo and printer. Is the antenna in the iMac that much differen than my first generation dual USB ibook?

I actually have this same problem, but with a pre-iSight iMac G5 17" 1.8ghz. In OS 10.3.9, there were no problems. After updating to Tiger, airport connection has been sporadic at best. VERY rarely, I can get a connection, but it's always weak and usually doesn't work, even if it says it's connected.
Usually, I try to connect and I get 'There was an error joining the __________ network.' And it prompts me to press 'ok' or 'try again'. Trying again does nothing.
I've gone through a lot trying to get this to work - and I currently am on 10.4.3 with the latest security update. I have 4 other computers in the house (3 different macs and a PC laptop) all of which are connecting fine. Any ideas on this? Any other information I should tell you?
    Thanks,
    Gabe

Are you saying you're running Windows in BootCamp or Windows as a Virtual Machine? You can increase the fan speed on the Mac using smcFanControl and use the software OGELTHORPE recommended to observe improvements.
smcFanControl is a Mac application and doesn't work in Windows, but if you set a higher minimum fan speed (which is how smcFanControl works) while running OS X, when you reboot into a BootCamp partition, that minimum speed tends to be carried over.

  • Can't connect to internet via MacBook Pro to Airport Extreme

I can't connect to internet via MacBook Pro to Airport Extreme. I reset AE and modem (power down and back up again). Some computers on my home network will connect fine and others won't. The ones that won't don't populate the DNS server or the Search Domains. AE shows up on all the machines. I have one computer also connect to AE via ethernet and it has the same symptoms. Why do some Macs connect and others don't. Even when I get them to connect when I shutdown or put in sleep mode over night I lose the internet connection and have to start all over. Very frustrating.

Regrettably no replies. I have struggled with this for days with no success and I have given up on the Airport Extreme. I have found several other Forum posts with very similar problems and no one seems to have a solution to this. It seems other wireless routers work better than the Apple product. I was able to get my old Linksys wireless router reset and it is set up and working well. The Linksys router does populate the DNS servers and domains where as the AE does not. Apple engineers should look into this. If I am mistaken and there is a fix for this someone please let me know, otherwise my AE will probably appear on Ebay very soon.

  • Why does the internet on my new macbook pro not work when my old macbook's does?

Why does the internet on my new macbook pro not work when my old macbook's does? I'll have to turn the wifi off and back on multiple times to get the internet to continue to work on my Macbook Pro (running mountain lion but did it on lion also) when it runs fine on my old white Macbook (running lion). Is there something I can do to fix it or do I just have to deal with it?

Here is your fix .. I have uploaded my properly calibrated profile get it here :
    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YAJL6A9X
And it should go to your user folder/Library/ColorSync/Profiles
if you have one already you can rename either one ..
and then go to system preferences - displays - color to select the profile .
you will get rid of the blue tint while keeping correct color and gamma
This is for the newer 2010 MBP's altho if same display was used might also give good results in the previous models as well . .

  • [SOLVED] Linux kernel 3.6.2-1 issues on Macbook Pro 4,1

After my recent system upgrade to linux-3.6.2-1, I ran into a couple noticeable issues on my laptop.  The first was the inability to use "mount -i /home/user", which is in my .bash_profile, to mount my encrypted home directory at login.  An error message would respond saying that eCryptfs does not support aes.  I was able to manually mount it with "mount -t ecryptfs /home/user/.private /home/user", but could not figure out the issue.  I also noticed my laptop running a hotter that usual and found that my fans were not changing according to the sensors.  I use macfanctld from the AUR to change my fan speed and killing its process and restarting it had no effect.  I then decided my recent system upgrade may be at fault so I rebooted into linux-lts and the issues were solved.  I then downgraded linux-3.6.2-1, linux-headers-3.6.2-1, nvidia-304.51-4, virtualbox-guest-modules- 4.2.0-6, and virtualbox-host-modules-4.2.0-6 to linux-3.5.6-1, linux-headers-3.5.6-1, nvidia-304.51-3, virtualbox-guest-modules-4.2.0-5, and virtualbox-host-modules-4.2.0-5.  These issues are now fixed on my system with the downgrade and I have blocked them from upgrade in pacman.conf.  I did not notice any other issues.

I felt it was necessary to post this issue, especially if another person also has it, so that it may be resolved in future kernel updates.  If there are any logs or other information people need to help resolve this issue or if I should notify a mod of this or something, please let me know.

After further investigation the issues were easily solved.
Regarding my encrypted home directory, I checked kernel.log and found that ecryptfs did not like the argument ecrypt_key_bytes=16 and that manual mount has the variable name ecryptfs_key_bytes=16.  So I simply changed that in my fstab.  Auto-mounting my home directory works nicely again.
In regards to the fan issue, I had to alter /etc/macfanctl.conf because the output of the sensors command (lm-sensors) contained some negative values which may have affected average temperatures and such.  I excluded those temperatures and played with the constraints more until the fans spun faster when I felt they should.
Still found it strange that some of these issues happened during kernel upgrades, but glad to have solved the issues.

Change your router channel.  Sometimes this is all you will have to do.
Power cycling the router.  Read the router's user manual or contact their tech support for instructions.
    System Preferences/Internet & Network/Network
    Unlock the padlock
    Locations:  Automatic
    Highlight Airport
    Click the Assist Me button
In the popup window click the Diagnostic button.
System Preferences/Network- Unlock padlock.  Highlight Airport.  Network Name-select your name.  Click on the Advanced button.  Airport/Preferred Networks-delete all that is not your network.
Place a check mark next to "Remember networks this computer has joined."  Click the OK button and lock the padlock.  Restart your computer.

  • IMac Can Print, MacBook Pro (over Airport) Can't

I've got an iMac USB'd to a printer (HP PSC 1510) that currently prints fine. But my MacBook Pro doesn't see the same printer when I try to add it.
    Both machines running Snow Leopard
No other troubles on either machine
No other wireless issues with MacBook Pro
It should work. I should be able to go to System Preferences/Print & Fax, click on the + symbol and the printer should appear. Instead, the list is blank.
    What's my next move?
    Please and Thank You.

    I'm a dolt.
Turns out that the iMac that was USB'd to the printer had Airport turned off. Color me embarrassed (I was a Mac tech dude for years back in the late 80s through the 90s and now it's 2009 and I've just lost my touch)... Anyway, good luck to anyone reading this - Apple Discussions is a great community.

  • Menu Bar issues on Macbook Pro

I came across this problem with my mac where after logging in I noticed that the menu bar, specifically the battery and wifi icon takes atleast 5-10 mins to appear and when I hover the cursor anywhere on the right side of the menu bar it shows the spinning rainbow. Also the volume button seems to be greyed out as well and usually I have to plug in ear phones and it will go away but only temporarily. This never happened to my mac until today and for some reason I think it has to do with the installation of Adobe CS6 Master Collection. (yes, it was torrented. no, I wont do it again.) I did some slight research and on some website it said that there could be some applications recently installed that could have caused this to happen. If anyone has a solution I would very much appreciate it.

Having the same issue. Macbook Pro 2011, latest Mavericks update ....
Apple menu disappears and reappears when Google Chrome is open/closed. Behaving the same with random programs. Do you have any ideas?? Software is up to date, THANKS!!!

  • Macbook pro and airport extreme don't work

A friend (and all those tv commercials) say everything just works with Macs. Well, not exactly. New Macbook Pro and Airport Extreme can't connect me to the internet. I still have PC connected via ethernet cable to my cable modem and router which is in the basement where the cable enters the house. I've tried the different options in Airport Extreme setup and nothing works. It doesn't help Apple assumes I know everything about DHP PPPOE NAT or whatever all those silly things are.
Can anyone explain in +very simple+ terms how I get this expensive piece of aluminum connected to the internet?
    Thanks.

Hello sofarapplesux. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I assume that you will continue to use the modem and router in the basement to get your Internet access ... correct? What is the make/model of this router?
If that's the case, I will also assume that you have the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) connected by Ethernet to this router ... correct?
So your overall network configuration should look something like the following:
Cable modem > (Ethernet cable) > \[Internet port] router \[LAN port] > (Ethernet cable) > \[WAN port] AEBSn ... close?
