Internet Speed sudden drops (need to reboot) - "FBI" name in WIFI names - Allowed?

Question 1: Why do messages asking for help and complaining about Verizon slow speed do not allow a "REPLY" . Verizon filters them?   I see the messages but thee is no Reply button.
Question 2: in the last two months my internet speed has been dropping regularly (suddenly, Pings go from 100 msec to 999 msec) and requires a reboot of my Box. This is in the Edison (NJ) area. Anybody else in Edison seeing this?
Question 3: I didn't notice any new neighbor moving in but in the last few weeks there is a new WIFI that shows-up in my area called "FBI_investig_1".   Anybody knows if people are allowed to use such FBI name for their WIFI, just curious...  Or is this genuine when FBI has a local investigation? (not very undercover...)

To answer your questions, once the ticket has been referred to a Verizon agent you can't reply to the meassage. As to why your pings times are bad it could be almost anything. You will need a Verizon agent to determine that. Lastly someone just changed their SSID to be a wiseguy. The FBI is not going to tell you that there is an investigation going on in your area.

  • Slow internet speeds and dropping connection

hello, I am making this post on behalf of my dad, for a good few months (5-6 maybe even longer) we have been experiencing slow internet speeds and a dropping connection when ever the phone is picked up. when an incoming call is answered some or all devices connected to the internet drop out for a second then come back online, the connection does not completly disapear but causes any voice chat, streaming or gaming to disconect. We have BT wireless phones (not sure what exact type) which we have had for a few years. they are connected through an ADSL filter which as far i can remember has been there for years. We have a netgear DG834GT router which has also been there for a few years. I went onto its settings and got this information, not sure if its usefull or not.

I also got this from the BTW speed tester

    Max Achievable Speed
Download speedachieved during the test was - 1.24 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 0.4 Mbps-2 Mbps.
     Additional Information:
     Your DSL Connection Rate :1.76 Mbps(DOWN-STREAM), 0.45 Mbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 1.25 Mbps
I hope this is enough information to figure out what is going on with it.

put everything back as it was and this is what it looks like now:

also while i was doing that i did i quiet line test and both myself and my brother listened to it and agreed that there was buzzing/static

  • Broadband speed suddenly dropped

For the last 7 months we have had good BB speeds of  around 6Mbps this has suddenly dropped down to under 0.5Mbps.
I have reset the Home Hub 2 & had it plugged directly into the test socket on the master unit which has not changed anything.
I ran the BT Speedtest which gave the following:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 414 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-500 Kbps.
    Additional Information:
    Your DSL Connection Rate :5824 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 500 Kbps
I did notice the blue "b" led flashing yellow a lot last eve, far as I know this means the Hub  is updating itself
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Hi Welcome to the forums
If you post the full stats from your router
For homehub – type 192.168.1.254 into your browser
Navigate to ADSL Settings or use the A-Z at the top right of the home page and scroll down to ADSL Settings and click on it
Click on More Details and then post the full results.
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
your ip profile is low this is due to disconnections and providing you can maintain a stable connection with no hub restarts for the next 3/5 days your profile should increase automatically this will then improve your download speed
Then someone here may be able to help and offer more advice.

  • Internet speed suddenly and drastically reduced through TWO different routers (EA6500 & E2500)

I'm definitely experiencing a bizarre problem at the moment with internet speed (both wired and wireless) through my EA6500 which began suddenly two days ago.  The modem directly into the computer continues to yield the normal speeds (about 3.5 Mbps down and 1 up) each time I connect it directly, but putting the router into the equation cuts it to around 0.5 Mbps down and 0.05 up, though the speeds do tend to vary quite a bit.  I just assumed that the router was defective, so I grabbed my older and perfectly operational E2500 to put back in its place, but the results were exactly the same.  I went through all of the troubleshooting with the cable company up through the modem, and again, the modem continues to deliver the normal speeds directly to the PC.  I also swapped all of the network cables around to verify that they're all good, so that's not an issue either, and the firmware on both routers is current.  While certainly possible, I have a hard time believing that both routers just happen to be bad at the same time, and I haven't made any changes in the last few days to the network configuration, settings or even the software and setings on my PC.  This truly is a baffling problem, and I would greatly appreciate any thoughts on the matter.  Thanks.

That interesting the MTU being 1280. That is the typical MTU of an IPv6 tunnel. Is IPv6 enabled on the router? Maybe your ISP has implemented IPv6.

  • My internet speed suddenly went VERY slow on all browser

    I am running on a Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5, 2 Ghz Intel i7, 4GB Ram DDR3.
I am experiencing very slow internet speed after some system update some time ago.
I have tried using wireless and LAN cable but both results the same.
I've tried resetting routers in both my office and home but it is still as disappointing.
Kindly advice on what to do? I've forgotten which update is it as it is some time ago already.
I have installed bootcamp in my macbook and tried the using from windows but there isn't such issue. The internet was smooth and great.

    Try these basic troubleshooting steps.
    1. Quit all app scompletely and restart the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
    2. Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
    3. Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

  • Download speeds suddenly dropped

Over the past year and a half i havent had any problems with my service up until 2 days ago. Our download speeds went from 350KB to 28kb - 50kb... (we have the 3Mbps plan) the modem is set to bridge and connected to a linksys router. I've tried power cycling the modem and router without any luck. I've also tried resetting the modem back to the default settings and plugging the modem directly to 3 different pcs with the same results
    Modem: Westell 6100F

#1 Margin (dB) - Signal to noise margin. 6 is pretty bad possibly unusable at times, 20 is very good. You normally want 12dB or better IIRC from back in my DSL days. The higher the number, the better to a point.
Line Attenuation - Measure the amount the signal has degraded. Below 20dB is excellent, above 50 is poor, fill in the dots for anything in between.
#2  Did you try connecting your modem directly to the NID?
    Points to: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/1317
#3 If not, please do and retest those margins and Line Attenuation.

Resetting the router via user interface should be ok. If you are still experiencing the issue after the upgrade and reset, adjust the MTU settings.

  • Airport Extreme Needs Daily Reboot to re-enable Wifi

    All,
I bought an Airport Extreme in Nov 2014, firmware 7.7.3 in Bridge mode acting as an AP, my network consists of a 24port gig dell switch a Sonicwall TZ-210W (wireless off) and a windows 2008R2 file server also used for DHCP, DNS etc.
I have issues where my airport will stop letting certain devices on the network via wifi.  I will get on my phone and it will be connected (iphone 6), get on the wifes macbook air, it will be working (sometimes), have my laptop from work that was connected fine 12hrs ago not get connected, my ipad (3rd gen) will not connect to the network, but my imac that is hardwired (connected directly to the airport (using as a switch for my imac) ) will connect just fine, but i can reboot any of the devices it seems like the ones that had a connection continue working but new ones will not or even if they were new in the past 12 hrs...  All i have to do to get all of them online is to restart the base station (airport)  I typically do that from my mac using the airport utility once it comes back up all of the devices previously working or not reconnect automatically and start working fine.
    What I have tried...
    1. Reset to defaults and re-setup  Still fails
    2. tried setting the channels static after using the wifi utility in my imac to see what channels would work best. still fails
    3. i have tried moving it to different locations in my house  - no luck still fails
    4. i would try different firmware, but haven't seen any others avail.
    5. searched forums saw posts of people a couple years ago with the previous version had similar issues and it was firmware related - No Luck
    6. thought about sending home with a co-worker let them run it for a while, but number of devices etc. could be a cause.  I probably have 40ish devices max on my network wired/wireless.
Do I have a lemmon?  Can anyone give me other options?  or do I need to have this replaced..

So just an update to anyone with similar issues.  After posting my initial issue here and seeing John's reply I contacted Apple, and here is what they had me do and I have not had to restart my AirPort in a week now.
So I called them explained what I had going on at first the tech was a bit puzzled at why I would be having these odd symptoms, but we walked through each page in the Airport Utility on from my iMac and the only setting that he thought looked a little odd was that I had WPA/WPA2 Personal enabled as my wireless preference.  He asked why I responded and told him because I had some family members that had older devices that were not compatible with WPA2 so I enabled rev 1 as well.  So seeing that this was the only setting that looked odd he had me do a full factory reset,  now I thought I had done this via software, but it turns out there are a couple different ways and the software way doesn't do it completely.
    Doing a Factory Reset.
    1. Unplug and disable wireless on any Mac that had used the airport utility to connect to the airport.  (we did this because we wanted to make sure nothing pushed old settings into the airport.)
    2. unplug power from the device. ( i found it was much easier todo this at the wall as you will need two hands in the next step.)
    3. Find a paperclip or a tack that you can push the little button on the back of the airport in.
    4. Push the tack or paperclip into the reset hole in the back of the device.  (right next to the power connector,  it was easier to jack into the wall than plug power at the airport while holding the reset button next to the power connector.)
    5.  Continue to hold the button until the unit boots and starts flashing orange, let it flash orange for 5-10sec then let go, it should continue to flash orange for a bit then go solid.
    6. Once the light stops blinking you should be able to see this in an iOS device, he recommended doing the setup via an iPad or iPhone as it is a very streamlined and simple setup.
    7. I then set my password and my wireless name etc. let it do the security on its own and that was that.
Like I said after doing that I have had no issues.  Seems a bit strange to me that it would be the WPA option as if the option is there in my mind it should work fine or it should be removed.  Anyway if this helps you out please post it, kinda wonder how many others have a similar issue...

  • Internet speed dropped to dial-up speed!

*(It took me about 15mins to get to this page)*
There seems to be something wrong with my Mac when i opened it up today; the internet speed has dropped right down to below dial up speed, yet all the other computers in the house are running fine at broadband speed.
    Hope you can help!
    Thankyou very much in advance!

The following usually works on both Tiger and Leopard:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
    form values
    download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
    com.apple.Safari.plist
    Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.
If not, MacFixit have published a very detailed (very!) article on speeding up a slow Safari, here:
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070416000657464
Many, including me, have also followed the advice given by others here to add DNS codes to their Network Settings, with good results in terms of speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.220
    208.67.220.222
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
    Restart Safari, and repair permissions.

  • Extremely slow Internet Speed

About 3 weeks ago, I noticed that my internet speed has dropped from the normal 13-14 mbps download to between 0.5-4.0 mbps download, and similar results in upload. My ping has risen from the normal 30ms to anywhere from 250 to 1000ms. It's ridiculous. Loading pages, uploading files, or watching Youtube videos poses a challenge. Forbid if I try to play a game online on my PlayStation 3 (which, yes, is working now). I've been putting off calling Verizon because I fear being on hold for an hour just to be told that I need to reboot my router (which I've done several times) or that I need to pay a service charge to have someone come out and do something that won't help. Is this a known problem? Is there something I can do myself?
    I live in Buffalo, NY.

Just an FYI, there is an easier way to reboot the ONT. If you go to the battery backup unit, you will find a blue button that says "alarm silence". If you push and hold the "alarm silence" button for 10 seconds it will reboot the ONT. I've tested this on my own ONT, works like a charm. Much easier than removing the battery.

  • Slow Internet speed using ethernet cable.

    Hi
I have a an old imac, still working and running on 10.5.8 !!
I still use it for music and simple word processing.
I have linked it up to the internet with a ethernet cable and the internet speed is vastly differnet to by ipad / iphone using wifi.
I syspect that its the imac and not the router?
Any idea what has gone wrong and why ethernet connect is not faster than wireless
    Thanks

    DOH!
It occurs to me --finally-- why you may be seeing this slowness on a wried connection. That latest G4 iMacs retained the 10/100BASE ethernet port Apple used to put on all consumer and educational Macs. The PowerMacs and PowerBook were considered "pro" models and had 10/100/1000BASE ethernet ports--much faster.
You may see improvement by going wireless if your iMac has USB 2.0 ports:
NewerTech MAXPower 802.11n/g/b High-Performance Wireles USB Adapter w/bonus ext cradle. For Mac & PC
It will give wireless "n" speeds if used in a USB 2.0 port--that's the protocol your other devices are probably using.
To see if you have USB 2.0 ports, hold OPTION and, while hlding it, click the Apple menu. In 10.5, the first entry should change to "System Profiler." Launch it.
    In the opening screen:
find the code in the second line that I've indicated with the red arrow; for a G4 iMac the line will be "PowerMacx,x"--please post your code and your screen size (15, 17, or 20). From that we can find out if you have USB 2, making the wireless option viable.

  • Sudden drop of speed - internet vitually unusable ...

    Hi all
I had a look round the service status page and saw nothing for my area, so wondering if it's just me, but last night as I was playing my usual evening online poker, I basically lost all connection.
Now, I'm on Total Broadband Unlimited, have a Home Hub v2, and have done since February. Am in the WD17 area, and nothing has changed from when it's been working fine all these months.
So, as I was merrily playing along, the 54.0 Mbps connection suddenly drops out to..... 1.0 Mbps. And stays there. Do a Hub reset - no improvement.
So come back from work today to see if there's any improvement - and marginally. It's now randomly fluctuating between 2, 11, 15, 18 & 54. Still pretty much unusable.
    Any ideas?

  • Internet speed drops 85% when routed through WRT160NL

I have a WRT160NL, and it decreases my internet speed from 3700kbps down to 550kbps when I route through it.
My ADSL modem is connected via ethernet cable to the WRT160NL, then I have an ethernet cable from port#1 of the WRT160NL to my desktop computer. With this connection, I get a download of about 550kbps.
When I route directly from my ADSL modem to my desktop (bypassing the WRT160NL) my download speed is 3700kbps. I've checked all cables and connections. What is causing the speed to drop by 85%?
    thanks,

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

As you are facing the problem on your Hardwired computer, then you change the settings on your Router... Once you login to the Router setup page.. Below the Setup you will find MTU size which will be set to AUTO so you need to change it to Manual and change the Size from 1500 to 1365 and click on Save Settings..... Then click on the Security tab and Disable "SPI Firewall" and Uncheck "Filter Anonymous Internet Requests" and click on Save Settings...
Now you need to power cycle your Network... Unplug the Power from the Router and Modem, Wait for 30seconds and then plug the Power to the Modem, Once all the Lights are lid on the Modem then Plug the Power to the Linksys Router...
Now you can check the Speed, what the speed you are getting it on your Computer....
If you still face the same problem then i think you need to upgrade the firmware of your Router.. Go to website linksysbycisco.com/downloads.........insert model no of your router in serach tab......select proper version of your router........download the firmware file......save that file on desktop....
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
    Now reset your router :
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...
