Internet through ethernet

I had my Express set up to take the internet from my extreme and pass it through to the ethernet or so i could conect my imac that dosn't have an airport card to the internet.
My problem is that i changed something and now the express seems to be joining the network but is not passing internet to the ethernet port. what am i missing.
thanks for the help

I read others write this. Everytime you change settings to Airport with WDS, you need to set up WDS network again.

  • I cannot get on the internet through Ethernet

    Hi Everyone,
I am 100% new to macs, I just purchased a mini used from someone and I have tried to set up the internet through ethernet card and it will not work. I have researched for two days now and there doesn't seem to be an answer. I have done it all using DHCP to try to automatically get the settings but it is bringing up 169 IP address is is wrong. I have tried manually entering the information in and no luck. It is connected straight from the modem there is no router. I am usually good with PC's and could fix everything but right now I am stumped. I am running Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger. I thought I would try this out to see if anyone could help.
    Thank you in advance

OK, If they are not using fixed IP addresses, then you should be using THEIR Router. You should get your IP Address through DHCP from their Router. \[As an aside, there can be quite a large cascade of Routers -- yours plus theirs.]
The 169.254.xxx.yyy address is the "self-assigned" address used by your Mac when no one responds to its initial broadcast of a request for assignment of an IP address. This is a complicated way of saying "no one will talk to you".
One thing to check for before declaring their box dead is the lights when the cables are plugged in. No lights sometimes means you are using a cross cable where a straight cable is required or the reverse. Most modern Macs "sniff" the cable and adjust to use whatever cable is provided, but older Macs do not.
Some providers grab the first M.A.C. Address (Hardware Address) they see, and limit connection to only that device, ever. So if your computer dies and you get a new one, you have to call them up and ask them to reset their box. Sometimes there is a procedure for a "Deep" reset in their manuals, and you may need to apply that now. \[and if you decide to add your own Router later, you call them and tell them you are installing a different "computer". Your Router then becomes the only registered device.]

  • Sharing internet through ethernet port

I'm sharing internet through my ethernet port to my other computer but so far it appears that it only works for web browsing. Is their something I can do (open a port or something) so the other computer can use the shared internet for more than just web browsing, like use ichat, Mail, or Dashboard?

Yes the firewall is on. Do I have to turn it completley off or can I just open a couple of ports?

Are you sure the lan driver is the correct driver for your Lan port? And I think you referring to your ethernet port? We have lots of terminology miss-used here and confused as to what they do.

Would recommend doing this maybe some lose connection or broken cable cause this.

  • Installed Lion, lost Internet through ethernet cable. Any suggestions?

    Hi there,
After installing Lion OS X system, I lost Internet through my Eternet Connection. Did work properly before. Any suggestions from your side to solve this issue?
    JHoek

The modem is NetGear model DM111P.
The cable is currently plugged into the back of the iMac.
Yeah that is the one.. real pain.. is it in bridge or one to one NAT.. or you don't know.
So at present you have Modem--- computer??
Time machine is currently OFF. It is new, bought 3 months ago.
    Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5
I cant find a re-set button on the Time machine
Time Capsule I guess you mean?? Time machine is software in the computer. Time Capsule is the box outside.
    Just try.. plug
Modem--- wan port TC --lan port---Computer.
Press reset.. reset is small hole next to kensington lock.. use a paper clip and press it in gently until you feel a click... keep holding it for 10sec with the power on.. until the front led flashes rapidly.
See if the computer works to internet.. if not you can just unplug TC and connect back again.
The issue is the Netgear is giving TC an address 10.0.x.x and that is causing the TC which uses the same address range to fail.. perhaps. Or it is just the netgear being its normal rotten self.
I would recommend go and buy a wireless modem router.. wireless is a near zero add on price.. you can get TP-Link or cheap brand.. and much less trouble than the netgear..
The alternative is to bridge the Netgear and use PPPoE client in the TC.. but let me say this isn't easy IMHO.. and I see lots of posts of people struggling with that model.

  • Airport Express for Airtunes Apple TV Only - Internet Through Ethernet

I just upgraded to faster internet and when I connect my computer directly though the ethernet it's world's faster than the Airport Express I have. I cannot update my Express since my MacBook Pro won't do 801.1n. I want to use the AE just for Airtunes and AppleTV, but when I turn on the AE it seems to disable the direct internet connect via ethernet. Is there a way I can have my laptop wired to the internet and still use AE for Airtunes and AppleTV?

I just upgraded to faster internet and when I connect my computer directly though the ethernet it's world's faster than the Airport Express I have.
I assume that you mean that you connect your MBP directly to the new Internet modem by Ethernet ... correct? If so, then the bandwidth of this Ethernet connection is at least twice as much as the maximum provided by the 802.11g AirPort Express Base Station (AX) ... which would be 54 Mbps.
I want to use the AE just for Airtunes and AppleTV, but when I turn on the AE it seems to disable the direct internet connect via ethernet. Is there a way I can have my laptop wired to the internet and still use AE for Airtunes and AppleTV?
Most likely this is because your MBP's network configuration has the AirPort connection at the top of its list, followed by Ethernet. If this is the case, your MBP will attempt to connect to the networking device in order of that listing.
Unfortunately, if you are connecting your MBP directly to the modem, the AX will represent "another" network ... and you would have to "switch" networks between Internet access and streaming.
    You have a few options:
o Get an 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn); connect the AEBSn to the modem, and in turn, connect your MBP to the AEBSn by Ethernet. The AX could then "join" the wireless network, created by the AEBSn, for streaming.
o Replace the current AX with the 802.11n version. In addition, get an 802.11n USB wireless adapter for the MBP.

  • Satellite C655D-S5533 can't connect to internet through ethernet (wireless connection ok)

I can't get an ethernet connection thru my ISP's (Comcast) internet cable box.  I clicked the LAN icon on control panel but still can't connect.

First, reboot the Comcast box and then reboot the computer.  If it still doesn't work, look in Device Manager under Network Adapters. If the LAN adapter shown there is Atheros, reinstall using THIS driver.  If it says something else, post back.  I'm assuming you are still using Windows 7 64 bit that came with the machine.

  • My web pages aren't loading when connected to the internet through Ethernet cable?

Yesterday my web pages stopped loading on Safari. I tried loading them on google chrome and had the same problem. I then deleted all saved web site data and reset Safari but this still didn't solve the problem. Finally I restarted with safe mode, where the web pages loaded, but slowly, however when I restarted normally the web pages still weren't loading or partially loading. To test whether this was my computer or the ethernet cable I was connected to, I connected to the wifi at my university, where the web pages loaded perfectly. Plus, when connected to the ethernet cable I could Skype, use Spotify etc., it is just the web pages that are causing a problem. Any suggestions how I can fix this? Thank you!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a few minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

  • Airport Extreme bs not connecting to internet through ethernet network

I live in a dormitory at a school. I have a network jack in the wall of my apartment that connects me to the rest of the school network and the internet. I have an Apple airport music thing that plugs into the wall socket and delivers wireless network and internet access to my apartment.
I also have a new airport extreme base station that I set up by using the wizard set-up software. My computer sees the base station. The network connection software says I have a strong network connection. But I can't access any service either on the local network or the internet.
Any thoughts about what I should change in the base station set-up to make it talk to the rest of the world?

    I fixed it myself.
It was not a computer related problem. We have a network registration procedure that I forgot to do before the internet works.

  • Hooking up internet through ethernet on my G3

I have just reinstalled my OS-X on my G3. It is a newer model. Now I attach the ethernet cable and here is where I start to get lost.
When I do it on PC all I need to do is connect and the pc does the rest. I don't know what settings or configurations I need to do to allow the G3 to get online.
Can anyone point me in the right direction or offer some ideas?
    Thanks

Give us a clue - at least tell us what is at the other end of the cable!

  • Sharing internet through airport

    Hi,
I have an iMac G4 with OSX 10.3 and a MacBook with OSX 10.4 and was wondering if it is possible to use the iMac kind of like an AirPort Base Station. The iMac is connected to the internet through ethernet via a router on a cable broadband connection.
I've used internet connect on the iMac to configure AirPort to share the internet and managed to connect the MacBook to the iMac but still can't seem to access the internet on the MacBook even though the Diagnostics have a green light on all of the options.
Would anyone have an idea as to why the webpages still arent loading?
    Thanks for any help!

Did you enable Internet Sharing in the Sharing panel of the Control Panel.
You want to "share your connection from: Built-in Ethernet" to "computers using AirPort".

  • How to access file server through ethernet BUT internet though wireless

I'm looking for a way to to run my file server network through ethernet while internet access is provided though wireless, but don't want users to have to switch off the wireless when they want to access the file server.
File server is set up at trade shows and the conventions charge a fortune for internet access for multiple users and even more ($6000) for a connection that I'm allowed to put a router on. So I'm considering running my apple router for the file server network without internet access and just having my staff get their internet access from the cheaper wireless access the convention center has throughout the building.
Problem is that I need them to be able to access the file server and the internet at the same time without switching back-and-forth from either network.
Any suggestions? File server and all clients are macs.

  • Internet through wifi while connected to different network by ethernet cable

    HI,
Is there a way for my iMac (2012, OS10.8) to take internet from wifi connection (tethered to iPhone 4S) while it is connected by cable to a router that does not have any internet connection?
The reason for this strange situation is that the telephone wires coming into the house was accidental pulled off, so I cant get internet through the telephone wire. I have to rely on 3G through my phone. I just bought Sonos Play 3 and Bridge, and they wont work unless their firmwares are updated. In order to do this, the iMac has to be connected to the Sonos (either by wifi or ethernet cable) and the internet at the same time. Since I am using wifi to be tethered through my iPhone to the internet, I have to use ethernet cable to connect to the Sonos gear. Whenever the ethernet cable is connected to the iMac, the iMac wont receive internet date through the wifi/tethered connection.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,

Thanks. I therefore have a problem as I cannot connect my ipad to the Apple TV. When trying to connect via Airplay my other apple tv appears (that is connected only via WiFi and that connects OK) but the Apple tv connected via the Ethernet does not show. I have looked at all the settings on both apple TV's and the only difference I can see is one is connected via WiFi and the other through Ethernet cable. Any ideas on what I need to check out?

  • Share Internet through Firewire to Ethernet?

Got a little problem for the 'collective'.
I have an 2011, 27" iMac, an Airport Extreme, and 2 Apple TVs.  Upon moving to Italy I can no longer use Netflix through my wireless because "it's not available where I live" (Netfilx does not have a license to broadcast in Italy/Europe?).
What I want to do is use a VPN service (i.e. Hide My ***) to spoof Netflix into thinking I am stateside.
Can I run my internet off the back of my DSL Modem, through my iMac (and VPN) and then route the internet from the iMac firewire port (convert it to an ethernet connection) and into the Airport Extreme.  I figure in this way I can spoof my wi-fi connection throughout my house and watch Netflix wherever I desire.
I'm thinking I will probably lose bandwidth routing my internet through the iMac, but I don't think it would be detrimental.  Until Apple comes down on their prices to rent TV Shows and Movies this is the only logical way I can see around it.
    Thanks!

    What OSX version is it?
I've not been able to get Internet sharing working in 10.7 past 10.7.3, works fine in 10.8.2.
