Internet troubles, IP address self assigned

Hi everyone,
I am having a problem with my internet connection anytime I put the powerbook to sleep or turn off and on the airport. It constantly loses the IP address and assigns itself an internal one. It takes it several minutes before I can start surfing, even though it IS connected to the network. It's fine right up until the next time I wake it from sleep.
Any thoughts??

Test your iPad on some other networks, e.g., Borders, Starbucks, a friend's network, etc. If it doesn't work there it may have a hardware problem. However, if it works OK there, then there may be a problem in your network (regardless of whether other devices seem to work).

Hi, the one below worked for my case.
I beleive there are different reasons for this problem. In my case, doing try and error, I found a solution for my case (at the ver end of this post). The reason I say this is because I had the same problem and googled the problem for quite a while ... none of the suggested solutions worked for me, although it seems like they worked for others in some cases. I tired taking my computer to different wifi networks (mainly unprotected ... ie no WAP) and alwasy got the same problem. I even took the computer to apple and no luck ... surprisely when I took it to apple it did connect to apple's wifi network in the store, so according to them it was probably some problem with my network ... when I walked out of the store I tried connecting to another open network in the mall and got the same problem ... went back to apple and they tried a few things without any luck (however it would connect to apple's network)
Of all the solutions I read the one that made more sense for me was the one related to keychain access, although in my case I had the problem trying to get into an unprotected network, which at some point was protected.
So this is what I did: among other things I compared the keychain access file with that from another macbook that was working ok, and I noticed that although my wifi network is unprotected there was an entry for it in the keychain access list (maybe from the time that I had the network protected with the deafult config from the router). So I went to network preferences on the computer that had the problem, went to advanced and selected the name of my network (configured without security), and changed it to WAP personnal security, and entered the previous access code from my router --- the same configured in the other mac keychain file ---. This created an entry for my network in the keychain access file, just as it showed in the other macbook. I then went back to network preference and change the configuration of my network back without security. AND NOW it is working, NO MORE SELF ASSIGNED IP ADDRESS. (remember that I actually I never really changed the configuration of my wifi router to make the network secured ... actually I didn't touch it at all .... well I did before some days ago trying to follow some of the suggested solutions, doing things like power cycle, reset to factory default etc, etc, which never worked)

CAn't connect to Internet Through Time Capsule-Self Assigned IP Adress

My iBook battery died. After connecting to power source, I can't connect to the internet. I get a message that the iBook is self assigning the IP address. How do I correct this? I've removed the battery & done several restarts with no success.

Here's 10.4 directions, not to different from 10.5, see if it helps...
Go to System Preferences
Click Network
Highlight AirPort and click Configure...
Choose “By default, join: Preferred networks”
Select your access point and Remove your access point with the minus button.
Launch your keychain access in Utilities and delete your access point keychain entry.
Reboot
Go back to the “By default, join:” page and click the plus this time to add your access point. Enter the correct password, save, reboot.

Self Assigned IP address may not be able to connect to internet

I have been using my Mac laptop for several years now an connect to the internet via both the ethernet cable and wirelessly and never had any problems but today I logged on and couldnt get connected to the internet wirelessly it said Self assigned IP address may not be able to connect to the internet. I can connect via the ethernet but not wirelessly. We have two other computers in the house, one mac and one PC and they arent having any problems but my laptop is, can anyone help me, I have tried resetting PRAM if that makes sense but I can't find anything to help me or sort it out. Can anyone be of assistance, I am not technologically minded at all and usually find the mac very easy to get my head around but this has thrown me completely - if anyone can give any direction I would be greatly appreciated

They're not guaranteed to solve the problem, but they'll only take you a minute or so to try.

Self Assigned IP Addresses amber lights and no internet HELP!

Ok bear with me as I try to explain my prediciment!
I have an imac G5 with a Airport Extreme card properly connected and currently at full signal! The problem I'm having is that when i click safari (or IE) it doesn't load up any pages and a littke box pops up saying that it cannot find the server! so I go to network settings in system preferences and check the network status. I have an amber light and it says "airport connected to (my server) IP address self assigned your mac may not be able to connect to the internet" the problem is it is not self assigned it is done through DHCP.
I have had internet working perfectly at another house and it has worke don the odd occasion for a couple of days here so I don't think its a fault card (as i say it picks up a signal fine). I have tried putting in all info in manually but this has not helped (although on 1 occasion it did). I have baffeled the university technician with this problem. Im currently using ethernet to connect but this is no good as I need the computer in my bedroom and not the dining room (student accomodation) if you have any suggestions or have experienced this problem yourselves i would be delighted to hear of any answers and suggestions!

Duane is right in that if ACL's (access control lists) are set on the wireless access point, (as they are in my school) you will need your mac address of your airport card to add to the router.
Here's what I would do.... Open up Network Prefs in the System Prefs app. Create a "New" location and name it whatever you want ("Wireless at Home"). In the "Show" drop down menu, select airport. You should see 5 tabs in the airport window. Airport, TCP/IP, PPoE, Appletalk and Proxies. Click the airport tab and select automatically where it asks you what default network you want to join. You'll also find your mac address for your airport card in that pane. Next, click on TCP/IP and select DHCP from the IPv4: drop down menu, make sure no information is showing in this window. In other words, no numbers in DHCP or DNS servers, etc. If it's blank and ready to go, hit apply. The router should then hand off an IP address. Close system prefs and look in the menu on the upper right hand corner of your screen (by the date and time). See the airport fan? Does it have black bars through it? Or are they grey? Or, does it just look like a blank semicircle (airport is not turned on). If you don't see this menu, go back to network prefs and open the new location you've just made and go back to the airport tab. There is a check box in there that says, show airport status in menu bar. Turn that on. Now, go back to the menu and if the bars are grey, click on the fan and see if your network is listed there. Click on that to join. You have made a new location with fresh DHCP settings and told your airport card to connect automatically to whatever network is available.
Your tech guy at school is probably a PC head and that's why he's been stumped. He shouldn't be.

Unable to connect to internet as Self assigned IP address Since Aple repair

Right this is currently winding me up a treat and i am posting this via windows under bootcamp on my iMac as it is the only way i can connect to the internet.
Picked my iMac up from the Apple store in Bristol UK (i dont know if this is related or not) but the problem has only happened since the repair!
I cannot connect to the internet or any services that use internet access, and under network settings, under ethernet it says connected (light in green) but you may be unable to access internet and it is self assigning IP address. If i go into advanced and renew DHCP nothing changes, its still has an IP address beginning 16 not 192. as normal.
I have repaired permissions, reset the Pram restarted and nothing makes any difference! The router settings have not changed and are not at fault. i can access the internet from my Mac via bootcamp, or 2 other windows computers in the house and my iphone via wifi.
Note my Mac wont connect via wireless either as it also self assigns IP address.
I dont know what to try now and am getting fed up with this, as i never have problems that dont make sense with Macs i have been an avid user for 10 years, and am well clued up with them (normally).
Can anyone shed anylight? Its a 2007 2.4Ghz Intel Core2Gb Ram 320Gb HDD 265Mb Radion HD Pro. Running OS 10.5.7 (not updated to 10.5.8 as came out when it was in for repair and i havent been able to access since)

Right i have just rebooted after reading another post and under Security>Firewall>Allow all incoming connections this seems to allow me access (well currently so anyway)
But surely this isnt right? IF i then go back to Set specific access its now ok, but i imagine it wont be if i rebooted with it like it was before.
Also i notice i now have the follwing under allow access (which werent there before it went to the Apple store for repair)

Can't get rid of self assigned IP address

Hello,
I have been trying to resolve this problem by myself for the last 4 days (by googling and reading forums) but nothing works so here I am.
I moved last Tuesday and everything worked fine until that day. Since I am in my new apartment, I can't connect to the Internet because of a self assigned IP address. Here is more info:
-I have a new modem since I moved (the apartment where I was living was furnished and had a modem already). However, I am using the same service provider and modem than the apartment I was subletting.
-I only have a modem (no router) and I use the Ethernet to connect.
-I am writing this message from a PC laptop which confirms that the modem is working fine and that the ethernet cable is fine, etc.
-I did many rounds of shutting down the computer, renew DHCP, unplugging the modem (from 1 minute to 10 hours) and plugging everything back.
-I called the ISP but they could not help (they just repeated the same instructions that I could find in the guide)...They have no idea how I can get rid of the self assigned IP address.
The problem is still the same, I can't get rid of the self assigned IP address (169.xxx).
Please help if you know other tricks to fix that issue...

Re 1) Setting up a new account won't solve the problem in itself but it will help narrow down the cause. The idea is this: the problem might be caused by something system-wide (e.g. a preference file in /Library/Preferences) or it might be caused by something that is specific to your account (e.g. a preference file in yourhome/Library/Preferences). If we knew which, we could target the troubleshooting appropriately. The easiest way to figure out which is to create a new user, log in as that user and see if the problem remains. If it does, it must be system-wide; if not, it is specific to your account.
Are you using any firewall software? If you are using Tiger's built-in firewall, how is it configured?

Self-Assigned IP via router - no internet access - HELP!

Hi all,
I have 10.5.7 leopard installed on my C2D Macbook.
In the past, I never had any issues connecting to wireless routers with internet connection.
As of late, I am currently getting 'Self assigned IP address' which does not allow me to connect to the internet. It is connected to the router, but just no internet access. I can see the other Shared computers (Windows PC and mate's macbook pros) but just no web access. And they do not have a problem connecting to the internet.
I have attempted the following:
1) Turned on & off Airport.
2) Deleted network connections and re-created them, rebooted in safe & PRAM modes.
3) Deleted router Key chain permissions & changed permissions to 'access all'.
4) Deleted plist files from /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/
5) Off Firewall & verified against the logs to ensure it is disabled.
6) Re-installed 10.5.7 combo updates.
7) Rebooted router, changed router channel, etc. Router is on the latest Netgear firmware.
8) Assigned IP address and entered the DNS, router values manually in Leopard.
9) Clicked on renew DHCP lease several thousands to no avail..
Occasionally, DHCP will work. But once I reboot & awake the mac the internet connection drops and 'Self Assigned IP' happens.
Does anyone else have any ideas? My only conclusion is that the bug is in Leopard 10.5.7.

Make sure your router has the latest firmware. If you are out of range of the WiFI or in a marginal area, this error simply indicates that your computer is not able to access an internet router/server and simply assigns the default IP address which is of the form 169.254.xxx.xxx. Basically it's a flag that lets you know you are not connected to a DHCP server.

Self-Assigned IP with my Ethernet

I have been having problems while on the internet at school. I will be logged in and on the internet perfectly fine(the Ethernet says connected). Then around 15 minutes later I disconnect from the internet and it says "Self-Assigned IP", where it used to say connected. I can't get back onto the internet until i restart my computer. This gets annoying having to restart my computer about every 15 minutes just to get on the internet. Any answers? Also here is a copy of my ifconfig under the terminal settings while the Ethernet says "Self-Assigned IP".

Hmmm...
Ok, here's a couple of questions for you.
1) Is this in a dorm room or in a classroom?
2) Does this happen no matter where you plug in, or is it in a specific room?
Troubleshooting problems like this can be a pain, but you have to eliminate possible causes no matter how unlikely they seem to be.
A couple simple things to try:
Try another ethernet cable. If the cable you are using has a intermittent short or break, it could cause problems.
Try connecting to another ethernet connection. (That's why I asked if it was in a specific location.) You could just be plugging into a problematic jack.
Try those first, then if it still has the problem we'll go from there. You may want to check with your school's IT department and see if anyone else is reporting similar problems. Maybe they can lend a hand.

Airport self-assigned IP address, no internet

We got a new router from Verizon and my Mac will not connect. Network Status gave this message: 'Airport is connected to the network xxxxxx. Airport has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the Internet.
How do I fix this an get connected to the internet?

I have AT&T DSL and I'm using the 2Wire modem/router they provided me with. Neither of the Powerbooks can connect wirelessly to the internet. Furthermore, they cannot even ping the wireless router. 4 days ago, both were connecting without any trouble (and had been able to reliably every day since the beginning of August when I hooked everything up). I have made no changes to my router's settings over the weekend. Nor had I made any changes to the Powerbooks' settings during that time. It just stopped working. If I wire one or both of them to the router with ethernet cables, connection works fine. My Desktop G4 which is normally wired into the router via ethernet, connects fine so I know my internet service is available.
So far, I've restarted both machines numerous times, restarted the router numerous times. Reset the WEP password. Changed the wireless security to WPA. Changed it back to WEP. Trashed the airport plist. deleted every wireless network entry in Keychain. Disabled DHCP and assigned IP numbers manually. Changed the wireless channel (I've tried 1, 6, and 11 with and without interference robustness).
I've been reading posts about this issue on half a dozen web forums (dating back to as early as June 2004). It appears to affect a variety of routers (2Wire, Netgear, Linksys), a variety of machines (Powerbooks, iBooks, MacBookPros, iMacs) a variety of OSes (10.3, 10.4, 10.5).
This thing is really getting me down. Anybody have any other ideas?

All right Apple this is some Bull#@$% I own 3 Apple units One is a MacBook Pro, one is a Macbook and the other is a G5 Dual processor tower. The MacBook and Tower are using OS X 10.5.5 and the MacBook Pro has OS X 10.4.11. Ok here is my problem all of a sudden all 3 units that had been connecting to the same wireless router for the past year started saying (AirPort has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the internet) Apple Care suggested replacing the router well I did that and hello I have the same message. Its connecting but not going to the internet. Under network status I have green lights for Airport and Airport settings a yellow light for network settings and red lights for ISP, Internet and Server. I have this problem with both MacBooks both at the library, my friends house and my neighbors house thats 4 different wireless networks that do the same dang thing. I need help!!

No Internet with Lion. Stay away until self-assigned IP addresses are fixed!

I have a TimeCapsule (802.11n 3rd gen) and four Macs. Until two months ago all was well and everyone could connect.
Two months ago the Apple apps on the MacBook Pro stopped connecting to the Internet on the TimeCapsule network (Mail and Safari would not connect, Firefox was fine). The MacBook Pro connects on all other networks. I travel a fair amount and the computer has connected fine at all networks tried. I have sinced updated to Lion (10.7.2) and the problem is the same. The error in System Preferences indicates that the computer has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to access the Internet - but Firefox works, so we know that is not entirely the case.
Last week our desktop stopped being able to access the Internet using the TimeCapsule network. Problems the same as the MacBook but the desktop Mac is using Snow Leopard.
Our older laptop is using an earlier version of OSX and all is well. Out antique Mac laptop is also working well.
We also have a Verizon MiFi and all machines can access the Internet on that.
I have tried every "fix" I can find on the boards and through Google. Nothing works. From the looks of the boards, there are thousands of users with this problem and no answer from Apple.
I was much better off before I switched to Lion. In those days, I just used Firefox and looked at my iPad when I needed mail (and waited to sync at the office). But with Lion comes iCloud and an increased reliance on the App store, making internet connectivity through Apple apps is a must. Can someone from Apple help us fix this? Does anyone have any suggestions?

And nope I'm not connected wirelessly, it's through a

I don't know who to blame for this. Five years ago, this never happened, but it is common now. It affects both Macs and PCs, but as usual, people like Comcast will make an effort to fix a PC but throw up their hands with a Mac. Go figure.
So, what speed, duplex and adapter type numbers
should I put in?
I don't know for sure. Start with duplex. If it current says "auto", change it to "full". If that doesn't work, or if it already was "full", change it to "half". If still nothing, switch it back to "auto" and fiddle with all the 10/100 speed combinations. You may have to go back and try different duplex and speed combinations! It sounds harder than it is. Try changing the duplex and adapter settings from "auto" before changing the speed. I'm am on my work Dell right now (which needed the same fix BTW), so I can't give you very good step-by-step instructions.
The thing that troubles me is why is it that the
internet works fine in Safe-Boot and Classic, but not
Normal OS X mode?

I have got exactly the same message after we re-configured our router. I was connecting using my iMac wirelessly before hand, but now cannot. Our other PCs can connect wirelessly to the router so it's not the router. I have also tried the firewall solution but that doesn't work either.
I did call Apple Support who said that a full troubleshoot would cost £35 as my computer is older than 90 days (well yes it's been working fine that's why it's over 90 days old, it's only now that it isn't!). He said a trouble shoot didn't guarantee success so I declined his offer to charge me an extortionate amount of money for nothing! He did say that the router needs to be giving the Airport an IP address, but it isn't doing it now. His only suggestion was to turn off the router and turn it back on or power down the iMac. Neither of which help.

Ipad will connect no problem to other networks.

First thing you need I think is to get your iMac connected to the Internet.
Shut down your iMac and you iPad. Then power off your router. Wait 30 seconds and power up the router.
After the router indicates that it is connected to the Internet then start up your iMac and see if it connects. If the iMac connects to the Internet then your iPad should too.
If this power up sequence doesn't work you'll have to dig into the router setup to make sure it is working properly.
