Internet via my N95 on a Mac

Hi.
I can still be surprised over the missing cooperation from Nokia, regarding Apple hardware. Considering that the OSX is so much better and faster than Vista and XP. Now that I got that issue of my chest. I’ve been trying to find out how to connect my N95 to my Mac, so that I can get access to the internet. I’m sorry to realize there STILL is no Mac Suite from Nokia available to the Mac users around the world.
Any ideas out there? I tried a couple of different places on the web, but no luck so far.

step-by-step guide (sorry, no pics):
when you need to select hierarchial items they will be described here in this fashion: "to save your file, click File->Save and enter the filename". this is likely clear already, but if not or for future readers, please make note of this syntax before proceeding.
there are 3 major parts to this guide, each with its own minor parts. the major parts are:
A. setup of N95
B. pairing with Mac
C. connecting to internet
the steps are outlined in great detail. they look long and tiresome. fortunately, the process is actually very quick and painless. the whole thing should take no more than 10 minutes, much less if you feel comfortable with the menu structures and dont spend much time at each intermediate menu location.
lets start with part A as described here:
http://europe.nokia.com/A4516037
A. setup of N95
1. all steps are performed on the device, you dont even need to own a computer yet to do this major part.
2. open: Menu->Tools->Settings->Connection (menu is the key you press to open the application browser)
3. select: "Access Points"
4. here, we want to find the NAME of your PACKET DATA ACCESS POINT. to get this info, find the name of the internet connection that you wish to use on your mac. for Cingular users, this is often MediaNET. for AT&T users mine it is called "AT&T Internet".
5. select the access point chosen in step 4.
6. you are now looking at the configuration settings for this connection - the 3rd item is "Access point name"
7. make note (maybe write it down) of the Access point name (BE PRECISE!)
8. click back->back; you should now be back to the screen arrived to by step 2
9. scroll down and select "Packet data"
10. there are 2 fields: in the second field, called "Access point" enter the access point name you found in steps 6 and 7
11. this is all you need to do. now, if a computer connected to your phone requests internet access, it will attempt to route data from USB or BLUETOOTH through this PACKET DATA connection.
Part B. Pairing with Mac as described here:
http://europe.nokia.com/A4366276
you should perform this step even if you have already paired the device, this makes it possible to ensure that the internet connectivity is properly setup.
1. make sure the device's bluetooth radio is on and is discoverable
2. to do this, open: Menu_>Tools_>Bluetooth
3. Bluetoothn, My Phone's Visibilityhown to all
4. make note of, and possibly change to your liking, the setting called "My Phone's Name".
5. the rest of the steps are performed on the mac
6. open: System Preferences->Bluetooth
7. click the center tab, "Devices"
8. click the button in lower right, "Set Up New Device"
9. a new window appears
10. click "Continue" in this new window
11. now select "Mobile Phone" and then click "Continue"
12. you will find your mobile phone listed, as well as any others nearby that are visible.
13. choose your mobile phone, as identified in step 4 and click "Continue"
14. The mac will read info from the phone. this takes a minute as the phone is advertising its feature set to the mac
15. when it is available, click "Continue"
16. the mac generates a passkey. you will need to enter this on the phone to complete the pairing process.
17. on the phone, again, you will need to "Accept [the] connection request". this allows the otherwise untrusted mac to connect to the phone. we will tell the phone to trust the mac in a moment
18. on the mac: if you have installed the isync plugin for your N95 (http://europe.nokia.com/A4299040) you can select the option:
"Setup iSync..."
19. on the mac: be sure to select the option: "Access the internet...", and choose the second method listed: "Use a direct..."
20. click "Continue"
21. if your GSM carrier requires a username/password, you will need to enter it here. AT&T and Cingular users can use these:
user:[email protected] pass:CINGULAR1
if you have a different provider, try a google search for the access point name (ie: for cingular, a google search for "wap.cingular" provides links like this: http://www.google.com/search?q=wap.cingular)
22. your GPRS CID String is (exactly this): *99#
23. the modem script to use is "Nokia Infrared", which is likely the default script
24. please check the box labeled "Show modem status in menu bar"
25. click "Continue"
26. you're done with the bluetooth part, click "Quit"
Part C. connecting
1. in part B, step 24, you turned on the modem status menu bar icon. here we will use it. if it's not there, you can enable it here:
System Preferences->Network->Show:Bluetooth->Bluetooth Modem->"Show modem status in menu bar"
2. click the modem status icon (a telephone handset)
3. choose "Connect"
4. if your settings are correct, the mac will connect and authenticate, leaving you online and ready to surf the internet
NOTE:
the bluetooth connection on the mac is brittle. logout, sleep, or shutdown while connected, and the next attempt is likely to fail. you may need to reboot the phone and/or mac, or pair the phone and mac again if this occurs. just be sure to logout before manually rather than letting the connection terminate for other operating system related reasons and you should be fine.
i hope this helped.
if you need more assistance, feel free to ask.
N95-1 ---> N97-NAM ---> N900 ---> E7-00 + N900 (I use them both)
(N95 was pretty good, N97 had potential but utterly failed to deliver, N900 is absurdly good. Those of you wondering, "should I try N900/Maemo/MeeGo"? The answer is a resounding YES)

    Hi ogigacz
On Leopard they hid away the APN field under advanced configuration options for bluetooth modems.
I don't know whether you have found this workaround:

  • Connecting to the internet via PC Suite / N95 8GB ...

I'm struggling to connect to the internet via PC Suite (v7.1.30.9), using Vista Ultimate SP2, repeatedly getting the error "Failed to connect to the network! One touch access could not connect to the selected device". I've tried different cables, checked for PC Suite updates, updated the phone's software, etc, but all to no avail. (I am able to connect immediately using my N80, so the problem seems to be on the N95 8GB). The rest of the PC Suite connection seems fine. Can anyone help me?

I found a situation where your error message appears. It is the case when the nokia is connected using the data transfer mode and simultaneously the OneTouch Application is started. Then the device is not recognized by the modem software. The PC Suite mode is required for the OneTouch Application.
In my situation I think I already saw all of the possible error messages described in the documentation during the various experiments.
For example I tried to uninstall and reinstall the cable drivers. Unfortunately the driver page of N95 8GB does not include them only the page of N95. This was a step towards success - what concerns the OneTouch Application.
Sometimes it is useful to switch off and on the phone, specially when it is not possible to connect with the modem driver.
In my opinion the possibility of completly uninstalling the Nokia Suite is missing. You can uninstall all parts but after reinstallation the Nokia Phone Browser is no more available, the icon is not displayed. All the software packages are working fine even the modem drivers but not the Phone Browser.

  • Connect mac mini to internet via windows phone

hallo, how can i connect Mac mini to internet via my Windows Phone?

You are going to have to buy an external modem.  They make ones that plug into the USB.  Apple does not make one so you will have to buy a 3rd party modem.  I would read the reviews before making the purchase to make sure you buy one that someone has tested with a mac.

  • IPhone accessing Mac Pro's shared internet via Bluetooth

I have an iPhone 4 which is running without an ATT contract (no cellular) and acting like an iPod.
I can access the Internet using the wifi arrangements on the iPhone, and this works easily.
But I would like to turn off the wifi on the iPhone and configure the iPhone to access the Internet
via the shared internet service on my Mac pro, connecting via bluetooth.
I am starting to think this is not possible, and the tethering can only go the other way, That is to
say that the iPhone can share it's cellular net access with the Mac via personal hotspot, or possibly
using bluetooth PAN or some other bluetooth connection service.
I have tried creating PAN network interfaces on the Mac Pro, and then I go to the iPhone and set
up a paired connection between the iPhone and the Mac Pro. But I just can't seem to guess the
right set of settings so that the iPhone can use the Mac Pro's internet via the PAN service.
Does PAN service only serve the iPhone's internet to an external device (like a notebook), or can
it be used in the other direction to allow the iPhone to request IP packet service from the Mac Pro?
    Thoughts?

I've been having the same problems as everyone else here. Trying to share internet connection from my ethernet wired iMac to my MacBook and my iPhone. Tried all the workarounds, but nothing works, or lasts very long.
Yesterday, I finally talked with AppleCare for over an hour. All their suggestions (trashing preferences, changing settings, etc.) failed, as well. The AppleCare person then put me on hold to speak to an engineer, who told her that Snow Leopard no longer supports Internet Sharing as of 10.6.1.
Not willing to accept that answer, I had them set up an appointment at the Apple Store Genius Bar for me, and after chatting with the Genius for a while, he also confirmed that Internet Sharing is no longer supported under Snow Leopard. Apparently, there were many hardware issues that the engineers decided to circumvent, and so did not include support for Internet Sharing with the internal airport in Macs. They said that the Airport it is intended to receive, not to send a signals! Yet, it worked fine, doing just that, under Tiger and Leopard! The only fix he could offer was to wipe my drive and take me back to 10.5, which I declined.
However both the guy at the Genius Bar and the lady at AppleCare inferred that Apple "may" release another update to fix this issue, if they get enough complaints and bug reports.
So, there you have it. Apple no longer officially supports Internet Sharing in Snow Leopard.

  • I have a Mac connected to Internet via DSL modem. Just bought iPad (today). What hardware do I need to set up wireless LAN so iPad can be used anywhere in house? Will Linksys work with Apple?

I have a Mac connected to Internet via DSL modem. Just bought an iPad2 and need to know what hardware do I need to add wireless LAN so I can use iPad anywhere in the house. Will a Linksys router work with Apple? Can Mac be "hardwired" and iPad wireless? Probably stupid questions but I need to learn. Thanks.

Thanks for the info. You are correct. I was speaking in general terms here based on my experience with the two devices in day to day use, and not in terms of exact specifications.
A better choice would have been to say that the "coverage" is about the same with the edge going to the Extreme....due to the newer mutliple antenna design.
We sure could use more help on the forums. Hope that you will become a regular.
    Hi Bob
RF is a minefield, but one that I have worked in for ages, the most critical factor in my experience is location, location, location!
Better routers have more intelligently designed antenna systems, output power as I said is the same, radiation pattern (coverage) is dependent on antennas and physical location more than all other factors.

  • Mac connects but PC won't connect to internet via TIme Capsule wireless net

I have my personal Mac and work PC at home. I'm switching from a wireless network using my airport extreme base station to a new time capsule. Had no problems earlier, but now with my new wireless network I have the following problem:
    - Both Mac and PC are able to connect to my home wireless network created through Time Capsule
    - Only Mac can access the internet via the Time Capsule wireless network
    - PC connects fine to the wireless network, but the settings indicate the internet cannot be accessed
I've tried fiddling with configurations etc. but cannot seem to get the PC to connect through to the internet using my Time Capsule.
The PC will connect directly to the net if I plug in the ethernet from my cable modem....What's the problem? Any ideas?

Welcome to the discussions forum AZR-DC.
The PC will connect directly to the net if I plug in the ethernet from my cable modem...
Make it a habit to power down your modem whenever you connect something different to it. Merely detaching the AEBS and attaching your Time Capsule or your computer directly will confuse most modems, so leave it powered down for a few moments. Power down your other equipment while you're at it.
Then, power up all the equipment as follows:
Modem... wait a few moments for it to complete its startup sequence.
Time Capsule. Wait a few moments again.
    Computers.
Be sure your PC and your Mac are getting their addresses "via DHCP".

Yes, The phone needs an active data connection, either through WiFi or Cellular data.

  • Unable to connect to Internet via Airport Express - 'cannot contact server'

I'm unable to connect to the internet via my Airport Express. I'm using OS 10.3.9, and had the same setup with no problems at a previous address, but with a different modem from the same ISP.
My AE is connected - the light is green - and my mac is connected to the network in Internet Connect. But when I open Safari I get an 'unable to contact server' message.
I've tried rebooting everything (modem, AE, Mac), and leaving modem/AE off for several minutes. Also reset the AE, but to no avail.
The connection works fine via Ethernet cable.
    Any ideas?

Thanks, I checked out that advice doc (106798), but could not connect to the address (http://17.149.160.49) which is given to test if it's a DNS issue. My ISP says I shouldn't need DNS settings.
The service is PPPoE, and I went into Airport Admin Utility to check if the Airport was configured for this. Under Configure/Internet, I found it was set to 'Ethernet', so changed it to PPPoE. Then when I restarted I got connection status in the bar (and good Airport signal), but status flipped between 'looking for PPPoE host' and 'negotiating PPPoE host', sometimes sticking on one or the other each time I tried rebooting all gear.
    Any other ideas?

    Wi-Fi Setup Considerations
Things to consider before you begin
Start with a plan for the physical layout. Depending on whether you have an existing Wi-Fi network, or if you are using your AirPort Express as a standalone Wi-Fi device, there are several options available for you to choose from.
When using Ethernet, Cat6 cable is recommended.
The layout you choose should take into account environmental factors such as physical access, location, range, radio frequency interference, etc.
You will need to consider what AirPort Utility settings to adopt.
You will need to know whether you are using an AirPort Express (802.11b/g) or an AirPort Express (802.11a/b/g/n).
If you will be using more than one Wi-Fi base station, it may be helpful to read the article Extending the range of your wireless network by adding additional Wi-Fi base stations.

  • On my MacBook Pro when I am connected to the internet via an Ethernet cable, Facebook pictures do not load. They show up as white boxes with blue question marks.

On my new MacBook Pro when I am connected to the internet via an Ethernet cable, Facebook pictures do not load. They show up as white boxes with blue question marks. This also happens on a website editor. But, when I am connected to the internet via Wifi, everything load properly. This is my work computer, so I have to be able to connect through the Ethernet cable to access everything. Please help me!

I mostly use Safari. But I also tried it on Firefox, Mozilla, and Camino. Mac OS X. It's my work computer, so I've only tried it at the office. I have to be connected through the Ethernet cable to access my files and email on the server.

  • Is there a fix for 'share internet' via ethernet?

As of a few months ago, there was a known bug in 'share internet' - it would not work with ethernet.  This is the case on my system (OS X 10.8.2).  Internet sharing works properly with wifi but not at all via ethernet.
Has anything been done about this?  Or has Apple decided that it no longer supports ethernet connections?
    Has anyone found a workaround.
    thanks

I should have been a little clearer.  I have a mac that connects to the internet via a usb modem (from Verizon).  I want to connect two other machines to the internet via this connection, and one does not have a wifi board, so I need to connect to via ethernet.  "Internet sharing" has "ethernet" as an option but it does not appear to work. Checking it doesn't yield any error message but the machine that is connected via ethernet cannot access the internet.
As a test, I've tried this with a mac pro both ways.  It works with wifi, but not with ethernet.

  • I receive a not connected to the internet message several times daily on my iMac connected via airport to a time capsule which accesses the internet via cable modem.. When I input my password to enter network preferences, the connection re-establishes.

I receive a "not connected to the internet message" several times daily on my iMac connected via airport to a time capsule which accesses the internet via a cable modem. Software/firmware is up to date on the iMac (OSX 10.6.8)  and Tme Capsule(7.5.2). Browser is Safari 5.1.
When I input my password at the prompt to enter network preferences, all the lights go green (ie... ethernet, ISP etc.) and the connection re-establishes immediately and states "the connection appears to be working normally".
It more of a nuisance than anything and seems to have started ocurring over the past couple of months. I also have a windows XP box also connected to the same cable modem that I never have internet connectivity issues with. I've verified all the physical aspects of the connections and can't see any evidence of any actual drops in the modem logs. I suspect it is just an intermittent communication loss between the Imac and the Time Capsule, but I am not very familiar with Mac equipment yet.
Just wondering if anyone has experienced a similar problem and what you did (if anything) to resolve it?
    Thanks.

The AirPort Express will connect to your existing wireless network if the network is using WPA2 Personal or WPA/WPA2 Personal wireless security settings.
So, it can join the network as a client and then provide an Ethernet signal to your Time Capsule.
Be sure to configure the Time Capsule to operate in Bridge Mode so that it will be operating on the same network.

  • Why can't I access the internet via ethernet port on my Airport Express?

I have an Airport Extreme base station and two Airport Express units. The Extreme is connected by ethernet to a BT Home Hub (BT is the internet provider). The network works for all the other computers that have Airport cards BUT I want to connect a Mac Mini (no airport card) by ethernet to the Express, but no matter how I try re-jigging the settings on the base station and Express, it won't connect. Mac Mini WILL connect when wired directly to the Extreme base station, so it's not the port. Also, I have been able to stream iTunes to the Express units so they are functioning in that respect. What am I doing wrong or not doing? Do I need to set up a WDS? Is there a bridging mode? Do I need to have a relay? Surely internet via the Express is possible!

The Airport Express units are the A1088 variety. The Extreme is A1354. Originally I set up the base station to create a network and got the Expresses to 'join network'. However, since that didn't work, I dug a little deeper and investigated WDS and bridge settings. The base station wireless mode is 'Create a network'. I selected 'allow this network to be extended' and made sure that the channel used was the same as the Express units. I have set up one Express to be a WDS remote and one to be a WDS relay on the same channel of the same network with the same password. I have specified the MAC address of the base as the main and the other MAC addresses in the appropriate places for the Expresses. I have tried selecting the 802.11b/g radio mode manually as well as in automatic. Access control is off for all units. I have tried the base station connection setting on 'Off (bridge mode)' and 'share a public IP address'. Am I just missing something?
