Internet while in clamshell mode, macbook pro

Whenever I have my MacBook Pro in clamshell mode while using it with an external display, it seems that the speed of my internet lowers drastically, but when I open the laptop (while keeping it connected to the external display so that the attached screen remains off), the internet comes back full force... Is there any way to fix this, or is it not something that I can fix? Or maybe is it just a coincidence and it just happens that every time I try this, the internet is just generally slow? I use the clamshell mode a lot now, so it would be nice if the internet was as fast as if the laptop were open..

This is probably because on the MacBook Pro, the WiFi antenna is built into the hinge, so when you close the lid, the antenna's reception is severely impaired. This is a Homer Simpson "doh" moment for the Apple designers.
Here's some discussion of the problem:

Personally when running my MBP in clamshell mode I connect to my router with a USB cable, which totally eliminates the problem.

how do I connect TC to a new ethernet and share a new ethernet DSL with a new PC and use with my macbook Pro? I tried and get no internet on the PC or Macbook Pro?

    Ok.
I am connected to wi-fi through TC connected to a specific router and is working perfectly and saving data through TM without any issues.
The TC version is 7.6.1 and am using OS 10.7.3
The router mode is on Bridge mode and router is connected to TC through USB cable, I suppose for internet access. My Mac is on wi-fi through TC
I have another location, much further, which recently have been installed with wi-fi through router that has WPA accessibiulity with password, 100% different than the current one.
Since, I will be most of my time in this new location, I wish to move my TC to this new location, and configure it in similar fashion like what I am having right now.
Naturally, I do not wish to lose any saved data on the TC.
Hope I managed to provide enought info.
    Thanks in advance

You could just try changing your Input Sources under System Preferences>Language & Text:
But I kind of doubt that's going to work. It may be a hardware problem or a system problem. If you take it into Apple they might be able to determine which and might advise a reinstallation of System software. I would take it to an Apple Store or an AASP but, first, make sure that you have a backup just in case they suggest a clean install of the system.
    Good luck,

Then put a SIM in. You cannot activate an iPhone without a compatible Sim.
If your iPhone was hacked/jailbroken the update restore the lock.

  • HT2470 Can Internet explorer be installed in Macbook pro

1.Can Internet explorer be installed in Macbook pro?
2.Can I have dual boot in my Macbook pro - with Mac and Windows ??

No, unless you install Windows, which you can certainly do. Boot Camp allows you to install any number of different operating systems.
If you're trying to use a website that refuses to load because it demands Internet Exploder, I suggest enabling the Develop menu in Safari's Preferences, and selecting a User Agent that placates the website.

  • No permission to access files while in target drive mode, MacBook Pro

    Hi all,
I have a MacBook Pro that the hard drive is failing on. I'm hearing clicking and it won't boot to the OS, just stalls on the apple screen. I have connected it to iMac via firewire and have gotten it to boot into Target Disk mode. But when I try and access the folders, particularly the desktop, they have the little red icon on it and says I don't have permission. Is there away around this? There are only a few files on it I need. Thanks.

If you do a Get Info on the volume, try the "ignore ownership on this volume" item at the bottom. You will have to authenticate by ckicking on the "padlock" before you can change the option.

  • HT201834 Is there a solution to the Wifi loss while in clamshell mode?

I am using a mid 2012 retina MacbBook Pro running Mavericks in clamshell mode connected to an external monitor over HDMI with a Magic Mouse and Apple Wireless Keyboard over Bluetooth.  Wifi works great while the lid is open on my mac but once I shut it completely, Wifi stops working.  It shows full bars, but will not work.  Since apple supports clamshell mode and says my Mac should operate normally in clamshell mode, why am I having this issue? Is there a solution besides opening my MBP lid?

Although I do appreciate your response, I will let you know that I posted my question based off of the support article you linked me to.  That article is great for first time users in closed clamshell mode, but it does not explain why Wifi stops working. Everything else works fine so I know I am doing it correctly. I believe this is an issue with the wifi antennae when the MacBook Pro is closed.  Once I open the lid a few inches the Wifi comes back but when it is closed completely and used correctly in closed clamshell mode (as Apple says they support) my wifi shows full bars but does not work. My workaround for now is to open my lid up but I would like to keep it closed on a shelf on my desk and use the peripherals I purchased to make this mode work. If anyone has had this issue and can give some insight, I would appreciate it!

  • Internet issues on my new Macbook Pro.

I'm hoping someone might be able to shed some light on an issue I have been having! I've just got a new Macbook Pro, so late 2011 model and ever since having it I have had issues with the internet. Forgive me if I'm not able to explain very well what is going on, but ill give it my best shot.
So I'm Wi-Fi to connect, which is on a 10mb connection, and using Safari on the Mac. When I first open Safari, the apple home page loads straight away no issue. I tend to be able to use the net for about 10 minutes without any issue. Then, for no reason whatsoever, Ill click on a link or type a web address, and it will take FOREVER to load, sometimes it won't load at all. I'm not talking anything heavy with pics or video, just a standard webpage, it could be anything. The other issue I have, is for example like today, I was on the guardian website, and I opened a few links in some new tabs, probably about 8 in total and the same thing always happens. Some load instantly, some take forever, so fail to open at all. If I turn the Wifi off on the Mac, and literally straight back on again, and refresh any page, it will load instantly (about 80% of the time this works). then after a few minutes same thing happens. Then after a while, it will go back to normal again and so forth and so forth! It's becoming quite frustrating.  The wifi connection isnt lost, its still connected according tot he symbol at the top, it just isnt working.
The best way I can describe it, is its like the router is getting 'clogged up' and struggles to get any info to my Mac. then after a while, it de-clogs itself and were good to go for a few minutes again.
I've never had this problem, with my main pc which is connected wirelessly, or even my little netbook I was using as a laptop before this. I was able to open as many links and tabs as I wanted with no issue, and never had hang times like this whilst waiting for anything to open!  There doesnt appear to be an issue with my connection, as every pc, phone and even ps3 can connect without a single issue.  The PS3 will happily stream HD netflix without any issue over wifi
I'm not sure what is going on! When my Mac is downloading big files, it never seems to have any problems and the d/l speed stays pretty consistent. I've run speediest at various points during various days, and I'm getting a pretty steady 10mb.
Anyone that can shed any light would be a lifesaver!! I'm hoping there isn't an issue with the Mac however this is getting to the point of unbearable, and im close to returning the **** thing!
    Thanks in advance!

Safari 5.0.1 or later: Slow or partial webpage loading, or webpage cannot be found

  • Clamshell mode macbook any dangers?

    hey,
well i just got myself a nice 32" HD TV that i also want to use as the main display for my mac book core duo. just want to know if there are any issues with using the macbook mainly in clamshell mode.
have heard reports that over heating is an issue?
    thanks

I have used my MB almost exclusively in clamshell mode since new. It's 10 months old now and seems to have come to no harm. It does tend to run a few degrees hotter on average, as shown by the iStat pro widget, but not so I'd worry. If you want to be ultra-cautious use a cooler - I recently purchased a USB-powered one for about £20 ($40) and when this is running the temps are about the same as those with the lid open.

  • Sharing Internet Connection from iMac to MacBook Pro

I've arrived home for the holiday from university and, of course, brought my MacBook Pro home with me. My family does not have a wireless Internet connection as I do at uni, but they do have an iMac connected to a cable modem via ethernet. So I have enabled Internet connection sharing on the iMac and told the iMac not to sleep unless it is inactive for 3 hours (it gets used frequently enough that this shouldn't be a problem, and the computer can go into sleep mode at night). The iMac screen is set to turn off after about 20 minutes, to save energy.
The iMac's sharing is via AirPort and it has a WEP password. I use my MacBook Pro's AirPort card to connect to the iMac's connection. Unfortunately, after about 20-30 minutes of using the wireless on the MBP, the safari web browser claims that I am not connected to the Internet and the AirPort card gets a "self-assigned" IP address. The solution is to restart the MBP.
Why is this happening, and is there anything I need to do on either of the computers to fix the problem? Both computers are running 10.5.1 with all security updates installed. It's frustrating having to constantly restart the computer when I'm using the Internet.

My problem is similar. I'm trying to do internet share from iMac G5 (w/ iSight) to MacBook Pro, both running 10.5.1. The iMac is connected to dsl/router via ethernet, and I'm trying to internet share to MBP via airport. I cannot establish connection, even though airport shows full strength signal. I checked password over and over and over, and that seems fine. But Network preference panel shows airport to have self-assigned IP.
I tried internet share from iMac to MBP via firewire, but that did not work either.
On a (un)related? note, I used to be able to share screen, but only in one direction. I could control the iMac from my MBP, but never the other way around despite the fact all the firewall and sharing is set identical. Now, even though in both computers I have the other computer showing up in the sidebar of the Finder, screen share and file share fails. I just don't know what happened!

  • Internet Keeps Dropping on my Macbook Pro Retina

Recently on my Macbook Pro Retina, the internet keeps losing its connection. I've had this computer for a while and everything was fine until recently. I didn't change any settings and everything is fully up to date.
The scenario goes like this, I would be surfing a site and all the sudden it just stops working. The wifi signal is very strong and when I turn the wifi off and then turn it back on, its works perfect again for a while. I am not sure whats wrong, please help!

  • HT201343 Could I use Airplay while in Clamshell mode?

Hey every one, I hope some one could provide direction to me on this:
So from how I understand it, I can use my Macbook Pro (late 2011) in clamshell mode as long as I have a wired or bluetooth mouse and/or keyboard (and settings adjusted accordingly). I am able to currently do clamshell with the thunderport/HDMI cable.
What I was wondering-->  if I can be in Clamshell mode, and still stream wirelessly through airplay to my Apple TV (newest version)?

Alright, so I think the next successive question would be: How do I do it, because I have tried doing the bluetooth settings wakes my computer, but it does NOT air play to my TV. So - could you furnish instructions for the not so adept?

  • I'm unable to browse the internet at home on my Macbook Pro (10.6.3), even though it shows I am connected to the wireless network with full bars.

This problem began weeks ago, when I suddenly couldn't browse the Internet at home despite being fully connected to the network. The network was a private, password-protected wireless network set up through a Netgear router.
I have spent hours troubleshooting and have tried multiple fixes including resetting PRAM, deleting and re-creating Airport, deleting and re-creating networks, changing IP and DNS, etc. to no avail. My roommate's PC works perfectly fine on the same wireless network.
This seems to be an issue with networks I use long-term. I can connect fine to networks at Starbucks, etc. for short-term use. Also, while trying to troubleshoot my connection issues on my home network over the last few weeks, I'd been using my apartment complex's public wireless connection (no password) with no issues. All of a sudden, I am having the same exact issue with that network. It's like something just snaps and maybe gets configured wrong after a few weeks or months of use.
I am desperate to find a fix, since now I can't use the internet AT ALL while at home and need it for work.
Thank you in advance for your help!

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)

I just got a new macbook pro. Whenever I open safari the page wont load and the beach ball of terror comes up and I have to force quit. I have ethernet access and it says it's connected but none of the internet features are working. I tried to connect through wifi and that isn't working either. Help?

You don't have a virus.  That isn't an issue for Macs.
There are a whole bunch of reasons why you're not connected to the internet through your router.  We'll need more info about your router and MacBook Pro.  It's impossible to guess as to your issue without more info.
