Internet Wifi for Imac - to buy an Airport Card or Not to buy?

Has anyone had any experience using an USB wireless adapter for wireless internet instead of using an Apple AirPort Card? There is an website called: afterthemac.com who sells this wireless USB adapter that claims it is 10x faster than having an Apple Airport Card... PLease advise if this is the way to go? Currently I use A Ethernet/Cable set up. Thanks.

I'll post it here again, for your sake:
Honestly, this is the best solution I've found in your situation:
http://computers.pricegrabber.com/wireless-networking/us-robotics/m/2519622/
Its cheaper overall (especially if you don't already have the required cage for your iMac), and monkey-easy to use. You plug it in, run the ethernet to your mac, and wa-la, you're up and running. It even has some advanced setup, and best of all-you can always use it on any other ethernet device (Xbox, PC, etc) that needs to grab a wireless connection.

I have an iMac G4 and need to connect it to the internet. Do I need to buy an airport card or can I just use a normal USB wifi stick?

Will this need to be a special mac compatible one or will they all be fine?
You need to see "works on Mac" on the box. All such deveices require a driver. The adaptor would work in many cases except for the lack of Mac drivers. Some companies have the proper Mac drivers on their web sites, some shuffle you off to suspect third-party sites, and some have no Mac drivers at all. If you want to buy one adaptor, not have to return it or send hours searcing the web for a driver that works, look at this one:

Airport card will not turn on after security update yesterday. worked normally (for the download of the update) until then. Wifi here works fine with my Macbook Pro right now so the issue is with the card / computer / software not the provider. Did the update change something?

Help us to solve this problem.

Depends on whether or not the machine is under warranty or not. If it is, just take it to an applestore and let them worry about it. If not, your airport card may have failed and may need to be replaced. It could also be that the card needs to be reseated, which is what I would check first. Look for a guide at ifixit.com.

  • MacBook 2008 wifi suddenly stopped working and says no wifi hardware. Took it to an apple shop, they said it could be the airport card but wouldn't do anymore then that.  Any help on how to fix this? How do I know if it is the airport card or not?

If the technician at the shop is competent, he has given you a diagnosis that should have identified the problem.  You could run the Apple Hardware Test to verify the findings:
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201257
Note the Apple Hardware Test is not definitive.
Go to the iFixit.com and Powerbookmedic.com web sites.  They have parts and installation instructions.  To install an Airport card is fairly easy.

  • Airport card intermittently not recognised

I just got my new 15" powerbook 1.67. The airport card only sometimes is recognised when the computer is started up. When I go into system profiler it says it is not installed. Restart a few times and it's there again! I ran the apple hardware test and it said that the airport card had "passed" - is this something with the OS not recognising it on start up, or is it more likely to be some kind of loose connection, needing an apple tech to have a look at it? I've also repaired permission, reset NVRAM, all with no improvement.
Is there anything else I can do to try to get this to work as it should?
    15" Powerbook 1.67GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

As you mention, this type of behaviour is often caused by the Airport card not being installed connectly or tightly enough. The problem you are going to have is that the current model PowerBook does not give user access to the card where older models do (as it used to be an optional extra).
Probably the best thing to do is find yourself a local authorised Apple service centre for them to reseat the Airport card. They should be able to do it while you wait otherwise can make a appointment to do it on another day to do it while you wait.

  • My maestro debit is not working in Itunes as it is asking for an issue number but my card does not have one.

I try to purchase a free app on the app store and it asks for my password. I put my password in and it asks me to change my billing info. I put in all the correct info but it asks for a issue number but my card does not have one so i can't purchase anything even if it's free.

    Andy ...
If you are going to use a debit card it you must enter a security code.

  • Airport Card can not find the Airport Extreme Station

My problem is, that my PowerMac G5 with an Airport Card can not find the Airport Network from the Expreme Station. But I can see all other wlan-networks.
With me MacBook Pro I have no problems, I have an normal connection to the Station.

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
In AirPort Utility how is your AirPort Extreme configured in the AirPort panel, Wireless tab, Radio Mode list? If it's set to 802.11n only the AirPort card in your G5 probably doesn't support that.

  • Where can I buy the airport card for the G3 ibook?

    Hi
I recently purchased an old ibook G3 and am wanting to use it wirelessly. I can't seem to locate the airport card that is needed to make it work. Can i buy it from the mac store online? Also, i have the airport extreme at home...will it work on that network with the airport card?? Cheers

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
No, the original AirPort card the iBook needs is no longer available from Apple.
I just checked these links for the original AirPort card today (ranked in order of price, lowest to highest, shipping not figured):

Yes, it will work with your AirPort Extreme Base Station.
    Good luck with the iBook.

  • Do I Need Airport Express If Both My iMac and MacBook Have Airport Cards

Just ordered a new MacBook that has a built-in airport card. Also will be using my good old iMac (both running Leopard 10.5.6). Since both computers have the built-in airport cards, do I still need Airport Express so I can use a WiFi network? I've already set up an Airport WiFi network on my iMac so I can WiFi my iPod touch. Isn't it the same principle? Hate to waste money if I don't have to. Also, I've got another iMac in the house that also has an Airport card (also running 10.5.6). It's in the shop for repair now so I can't try this out to see if it works - but can I simply turn on airport and internet sharing on that mac and let it use the WiFi network already set up on my other mac? Hmmm??? Thanks for any help.

Basically what you have done is utilize OS X's Internet Sharing feature on your iMac. This turns your iMac into a "software" router. In this case, you MacBook (& other wireless clients) can access the Internet through the iMac so you do not need to get a hardware router, like an Express or Extreme base station in order to do so. The only constraint is that the iMac must be on for this to work.

  • I am connected to wifi, but the signal bars in my menu bar say that the airport card is not installed. Any ideas?

I just updated my mbp with the icloud update and now my wifi signal bars in my menu bar stopped working and say that there is no airport card installed. I am connected to the internet through wifi just fine and the system preferences says that I am connected, just weird that the menu bar signal stopped working. if there is no fix, is ther an alternate wifi signal bar that i can put up there?
    Thanks for the help.

    anyone?

  • Airport card is not recognized by G3 iMac

I recently acquired a G3 600 MHz iMac, running OS X 10.4.11, and I want to join the iMac to my wireless network. So I purchased an Airport card ( tested card on a ibook running 10.4.11 and it works fine.) and seated it in the G3 iMac. For some reason the iMac does not recognize it one bit. I checked profiler and System Preferences and no sign of an Airport Card. I then opened the iMac and reseated the card, I even changed out the adapter with another adapter I had. After researching online, some people suggested an archival OS restore. Although I would try that but unfortunately I do not have any of the original install disks. So my question is: does anyone know how I can make the os recognize the card?
    Greatly appreciate the help.

There are two versions of the original AirPort card, and their identify can be determined using the information below.
The poster you replied to may be referring to this post quoted below, though even if he had the initially issued card, it would not explain why the card is not recognized. Though incapable of supporting advanced security, it would otherwise be recognized and operate as expected if seated properly, as you have described.
The original AirPort card was equivalent to a WaveLAN Silver card, and supported only 40-bit WEP or 64-bit encryption, and did not support WPA.
The original AirPort Base Station which shipped with these cards on board was limited to 10 clients, had only a 10BbaseT LAN port, and supported only 40-bit WEP. Later cards which looked physically identical, supported 104 bit WEP, or 128-bit encryption, as did the AirPort Base Stations which included them. This second card, also manufactured initially in the Netherlands for Apple by AT&T's Lucent unit—later know as ORiNOCO—was equivalent to the WaveLAN Gold card.
The 661-2219 part number is distinguished by the M7600LL/* marketing designator screened on the label, as well as engineering revision part number 825-4889 and worldwide procurement part number 630-2883. EEE code G3G is embedded right-most in the last four characters of each part's serial number. *This character is typically A, B or C.
The 661-2569, on the other hand, is distinguished by an M7600LL/D or later marketing designator, engineering revision part number 825-5620, the same worldwide procurement part number 630-2883 and typically the phrase '128 bits' along the lower center of the label. EEE codes LH8, M6Y or QAC are embedded right-most in the last four characters of each part's serial number.
While a procurement number generally changes when a service part number change is made, this product did not, as Lucent remained its sole supplier, the 'change' to the card involved different firmware and not a physical change to the product, and Apple personnel largely considered them equivalent, though they were and are not.
Graphite AirPort base station models initially used the M7600LL/A, B or C cards, and was itself designated the M7601LL/A and later, the M7601LL/B. Both base stations were also designated as 661-2265 whole unit service replacement parts. Every card we've ever seen in a Graphite base station was a 661-2219 and was marked as described above.
Apple did not adequately document many of these parts and there applications at the time they were still in use, and all have disappeared from their inventory—except in limited cases—as has much of what existed for documentation. Given their personnel changes over the years, it's quite likely that no one there now can recall the subtle differences or properly identify these products. Once there are designated vintage, then obsolete, they drop quickly off of the radar.
While any properly functioning iMac compatible AirPort card properly mounted in a 076-0804 adapter would show up in the System Profiler without the antenna connected, the performance of such a card would be poor to abysmal.
I believe that you are completely correct when you indicate that either the adapter is not seated properly, that it is not working properly, or that the logic board is defective. The latter two scenarios are quite unlikely, though possible.

  • IMac 10.4 w/ Airport Card loses wireless connection

I just upgraded an iMac w/ Airport card to 10.4.6. Was running 9.2.2 w/ Airport card and it worked fine on home wireless network. Now, the signal stays on for 5 seconds, goes off for 1 second, and then comes back. iMac is in same location as before. 2Wire, the wireless modem maker, says I need to update Airport card driver? Can anyone please help?

Not to worry. If you have applied all of the AirPort updates via Software Update, your AirPort card has all the updates that are available.
