Internet (wifi) on new 27" iMac is painfully slow!

Just got a new 27" iMac this weekend. The wifi seems to be painfully slow. I've looked through other forums and have reset the DNS to 8.8.8.8, which seems to have helped a little. It's just so disappointing to have this beautiful, new machine be sooo much slower than older computers. All suggestions welcome; thanks!

Not specific to a slow wifi connection, but wifi problems in general seem to crop up a lot on here and unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a 'one fix' solution.
However, sometimes any one of the following might help resolve issues although, unfortunately, not always. In no particular order:
Check wifi security - if it's WEP change it to WPA or WPA2 (preferably, as it's more secure)
Change the wifi channel on the router
Create a new Network Location: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5289
Reboot the router
Also take a look at this link and the links within the article for other ideas. They mainly reference Lion, but still seem to be relevant to Mountain Lion:

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

  • Imac is painfully slow. Opening up applications takes 2 to 3 minutes. This occured just after a failed attempt at downloading a TV episode on Itunes.

I was downloading a TV episode in Itunes when it froze. The download was not completed. I had to use the emergency shut down processes and then restart my Imac. Everything now takes 2 to 3 minutes to open up. I have access to all my applications,as far as I know,  but everything including my internet is painfully slow. Almost like itues is still running in the background or something.

Go to user>Applications>Utilities>Activity Monitor and check to see what applications are using all your memory.  You can quit the offending app in Activity Monitor - please let us know what happens,

  • Imac is painfully slow

I have a iMac early 2008, 2.66 intel Core 2, with 2 GB RAM. I'm running OS X 10.8.2. I just ordered RAM to get up to 4GB, so this may help but oh my goodness it's slow. Any advice on how to get it to run faster besides shelling out money for a newer one?

You didn't say if you have installed the RAM or not, if you haven't then you should see some performance increase however 4GB is really the bare minimum in most  peoples opinion for running Mountain Lion. I'd recommend upgrading to 6 GB (yes your machine will accommodate 6GB) and then also use Activity Monitor to read System Memory and determine how much RAM is being used to see if you have any apps using too much RAM.

  • How can I remove Lion? Since the upgrade, my 2011 iMac is painfully slow :(

Any help is sincerely appreciated. My iMac is my primary computer at work and is slowing me down. It ran Snow Leopard beautifully, but it just can't handle Lion. It's a 2011 27 inch model.
    Cheers
    Jeremy

I updated last week and have had severely degraded performance ever since. It takes around 15 seconds to load launch pad, then even longer for the app icons to appear. If iTunes is playing, playback stutters constantly and it takes a long time for the next song to come on. It's a new machine so there's not much to index, I only have 1 folder with some photoshop files and an iTunes music folder. The only non-standard software I have is Microsoft Office 2008 and Adobe Photoshop CS5.

  • I have cable internet but my connections have been running painfully slow, much slower than the previous 2years that i've owned the computer.  I really don't know what to troubleshoot to find the problem(unless it's with my provider)

iPhones do not have international warranties. The only place in which you can get Apple service on your phones would be Hong Kong. Unless you have AppleCare, neither of these phones is under warranty. It is likely that the best Apple could offer you is an out-of-warranty replacement.

  • IMac isrunning painfully slow....

I have repaired permissions, run Disk Warrior, resest cache etc. I am curious about the Memory section of the Activity Monitor. I do not know how to interpret it but hope someone can tell me if this screen shot suggests any explanation?  If so, is there any way to improve the speed without purchasing more memory?
The picture was taken with only safari running. I have not had troubles until the last month or so and don't feel like I have changed my usage - did upgrade to Mavericks....

DO NOT buy RAM from Best Buy. I woudl recommend using OWC (www.macsales.com) or Crucial. Of the two I prefer OWC. Here is a link to the video I spoke of, you will note this is from OWC. Your machien can accomodate up to 6GB, I would recommend upgrading it to 6GB.

For the Internet, you should set up a router on your modem, this router will route the packets to any device on the local area network.
If you use the iMac as a router, like if you connect the Ethernet cable from your modem to the iMac, then broadcast a Wifi signal, the iMac will have to remain on all the time, at full power. Thus drastically shortening it's lifespand.
A router is only about $100 or so, offers much better security as it's like a large guard, someone has to hack through router first to get your iMac or other devices.
If it breaks, you buy another 5 years later for another $100, so your not placing all that always on wear and tear on your expensive iMac.
Apple's airport routers are pretty good, easy to set up and have automatic firmware updates, plus music sharing etc.
Set up properly you will be very secure

  • I cannot retrieve the password for the wifi connection on my imac and so cannot access the internet with my ipad at home.  I have a cable modem. Help please!

I cannot retrieve the password for the wifi connection on my imac and so cannot access the internet with my ipad at home.  I have a cable modem. Help please!

If you mean that you cannot remember the password for your WiFi network this will work for you - or it should work if you are the administrator on the Mac.
You will need to be logged in as the administrator on your Mac and you must know the password - Open Keychain Access on your Mac in the utilities folder, click on Passwords. Find the Airport Network Password listed on the right. Double click on it. Click on show password in the the window that pops up. Enter your administrator password when prompted and click allow.
If Keychain is locked - you must enter the administrator password there as well to unlock it and access the password.
If you have set the Mac up for Internet Sharing for the iPad to share the Mac's connection, just create a new network On the Mac with Internet sharing and a new password.

  • New 27inch iMac keeps asking to choose Wifi network. How do I stop it?

I recently purchased the new 27inch iMac and i'm really enjoying everything except this little annoyance. Everytime my computer restarts or goes to sleep, it automatically asks me to join a wifi network when I start it up again. I've already selected my home network as my default network that I want it to connect to but it keeps asking me to choose a network anyways.
If I 'x' out of the the wifi selection window, it will automatically connect to the default network it's supposed to. I just want to know why it's asking me every single time I log in.

seems that the card takes a few seconds to wake up after the iMac awakes from sleep. It eventually connects to the prefered network. But the dialog box continues to show up when the the MAC is waken up...

  • Problem connecting to internet after NEW 27" iMac makes up from sleep

Ok, I have a brand new 27” iMac and when it connects to the internet after waking up from sleep mode doesn't have any download speed.. See image
This only happen when it wakes up and the only way to fix it is to restart the computer. I have tried turning on and off the airport as well as messing around with other settings and nothing seams to fix it.
I am using an Apple Airport Extreme with a Comcasts 20mb connection.
This is the only computer in the house that has this problem (3 other MacBook Pros) And while the iMac is registering no download speed, the other computer are cranking out at over 20mbps.
The fix for now has been turning off the power saving setting to allow sleep. so no sleep=internet.
Any one having this problem? I don’t really want to lug it back to the apple store but I will if I have to.

You don't have to.  Call Apple tech support.  They can give you instructions over the phone if the issue is just software.  You will have to bring it in if tech support suspects you have a hardware issue as they need to run diagnostic testing.

How is the C6200 connected to the iMac, is it via USB or Wi-Fi? If it's via Wi-Fi please make sure it's connected to the router using the printer's Network Wizard. Then click System Preferences - Print & Scan and assuming the iMac is on the same network as the printer, if it is the printer should be seen. If it's not then click the + sign and add the printer. • Is it possible to load my Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop CS2 on my wife's new iMac version 10.7?

    Greetings All,
Is it possible to load my Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop CS2 on my wife's new iMac version 10.7?  So far, no luck.  Message says: "won't support programs for Power PC"
Apparently it's time to dole out a chunk of change and upgrade.  Your advice, comments, suggestions are welcome.
    Thanks,
    George

    George:
Always an excellent idea to have a backup somewhere. Make sure you purchase an external drive that is big enough that you can create a few partitions. That way you can have a partition for the "clone" and then maybe two more partitions: one for your files as a backup and one for your wife's. And you can move the external around between your computer and your wife's, as long as they are both Macs.
And for cloning, I suggest and recommend Carbon Copy Cloner:

  • Wifi detected on my iMac, but internet is off an on

I am having a problem with my IMac wifi: basically, it detects my home network and the internet runs fine -- sometimes.  For no apparent reason (the wireless modem is 5 feet away) the internet cuts out, although the iMac is still recognizing my home network and doesn't indicate any change.  I can fix it my turning my wireless on and off, but it will continue to drop off.  Any ideas?
