Internet won't work unless using network diagnostics, every 5 minutes

MacBook 2,1 - 10.6.8
In the header I already described my problem and it's a REALLY weird problem.
So if I restart my MacBook I can go browse for about 1-10min, then it just keeps loading and if you wait endless it gives me a network error message. When I use Safari it point you to the "network diagnostics" software, which I found very helpful, because when I just keep pressing next Internet works again all of a sudden?!? BTW the last two indicators are most likely always red or yellow (Internet and Server), everything else is green. It's not a problem with my WIFI either, because I can see other network devices AND … now comes the funny part, IT WORKED BEFORE!!
It always worked flawlessly before, before I made a Backup of my current state (just updated to 10.6.8 and made a Time Machine Backup), because I wanted to make a fresh install. I deleted my partition and tried to install 10.7 from an external HD. The problem is Lion needs at least 2GB of Ram, otherwise it won't let you install it.
OK. So I got my 10.6 image and put It on my external drive again, started it up and made a fresh install.
After the install it asked me if I want to restore anything from a old Mac or a Time Machine backup, which I did (restored everything, from settings to apps). Of course some Apps didn't work like MacAppStore (requires 10.6.8) so I tried to make a software update which was a PAIN IN THE A**, because it always stopped after several minutes but kept trying to download (until several minutes it gave me an connection error). "SOLUTION" using network diagnostics and klick all the way throught and all of a sudden the download continued (if it haven't timed-out already). SO… the problem was there already after the fresh install of 10.6 and continued after install the 10.6.8 Combo and any other update!…
WHAT THE HECK?!?…
so for the guys who don't want to read throught all my story:
Internet (over Wifi) keeps dropping (every 5 min) until I run network diagnostics every time! (worked before!!)… only after fresh 10.6 install and TM-backup restore.
And NO, I DOUBT that my router is the problem, because it worked before and this problem occurs on all Wifi networks.
Also no settings changed (DHCP as before, IP and everything else are fine).
This problem is REALLY annoying. Thanks for your help!

Not too sure but had a problem like this once, try deleting your current "location" in Network Settings and just make a new one with some new name. ("this ain't Kansas anymore" conclusion: some part of your software, drivers or frameworks suddenly thinks its in some strange environment, "coincidentally" by the same old name, but definitely, now, somewhere else)

  • My Internet won't work unless I'm close to the router

I've got the iPod touch, 5th generation with up up to date software.
Every time I try to connect to the Internet, I have to be within one meter from my router, and that's the only time I can connect to the Internet.
I've got a family member with an iPhone 5 and they're connect to the Internet router and we've got the same IP address and information for the router.
So I'm slightly confused on why my Internet wont work properly.

  • Why do I have to select my network using Network Diagnostics every time I turn on my MacBook Pro and go to Safari?

Every time I turn on my MacBook Pro, before I can use any programs that access the internet (i.e. iTunes, iBank, etc), I have to go into Safari where it prompts me to perform network diagnostics.  (I use a wep encrypted wireless network.)
During network diagnostics, I select my network and at some point it tells me that my network appears to be working properly and then defaults to the Apple.com webpage.  I then Quit network diagnostics and exit Safari and then I am fine to do whatever I need to in the other programs.
This is quite annoying and I wish it would just remain on my network without me having to do this every time I turn it on.  Is there some thing I can do or some setting that I am missing that would allow me to avoid this?

    Is your network hidden? See:

Change the name of the network and the password, then connect manually and when it asks to save in Keychain do so.

  • I just installed Lion 3 days ago, now my audio won't work, unless I use headphones, also space bar glitches, and other software issues..MacBook Pro 15 inch, and most everything is messed,,but the audio is killing me.

I installed Lion a few days ago, ever since then my audio won't work, unless I use my headphones.  Also, the saver screen with password changes frequently, and the space bar works when it wants to.  There are many other issues I am having.  My IPhoto,,does not work properly, pages is not working, I have all versions.  The Office Suite is acting strange, and my email accounts work when they want,,,my IPhone 4 won't sync anymore.  The list is endless...does anyone else have this problem?

Your wifi problem sounds very much like the problem I had. The wifi would drop out, the icon showed it was still connected. If I turned it off, I couldn't turn it back on. Another user here pointed me to the problem, which was the wifi cable (the flat cable goint from the card to the motherboard). I found it on ebay for $13 and it's been running fine since I replaced it. This is the repair guide for your machine. The part number will be on there if you click the link.

  • My i-pod key pad/wheel won't work unless it is hooked up to my computer

I bought my i-pod a while back, and it has worked fine until now. My i-pod key pad/wheel thing won't work unless I have it hooked up to my computer. When it is hooked up it works fine, when it isn't hooked up the key-pad/wheel thing won't respond to any thing, it just won't work. Please help me figure out what is wrong with my i-pod and fix it!!!!!

No. Back it up anyway. If you can't use the built-in backup function of iTunes, find the library in the Windows Explorer and back that folder up as you would any other.

  • Won't work unless plugged in

My 5th gen. iPod is about a year and a half old and has hardly been used because it WON'T WORK UNLESS IT'S PLUGGED IN! Whenever I plug it into my MacBook, it turns on, restores, syncs, etc. But whenever it is unplugged, it immediately shuts off and won't work. Help?!

Take the iPod Nano to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.  More than likely you need a new battery.

  • The iPod won't work unless it's plugged into the AC Adaptor...

It only works when plugged into the AC Adaptor. Otherwise it is unresponsive. The hold button is definitely not on. When I plug it into the AC adaptor, a number of things happen:
    1. The battery does'nt show the charging animation. It only stays full.
    2. When I plug it into the AC adaptor, the apple logo pops up and the ipod seems to be reloading info for a sec...then it goes right into the menus.
When I do have it plugged in, it works fine. All songs play clean without any skipping...even when in shuffle and repeat mode the song progression is clean.
By the way, I have a 20 Gig monochrome 4th Gen iPod. This is my 3rd replacement iPod, as the support at the apple store in SOHO, NYC simply give me replacement ones. I'm not sure if they are refurbished or not. It has'nt given me any problems thus far and I have 688 songs on it plus other files in disk mode.

Yes I know it's booting up, the problem is it won't boot up unless it is plugged into the AC adaptor...
It's not asleep...otherwise it would turn on without being plugged in to the AC adaptor. It can also be reset which would yield the same booting up screen process, but again regardless of how many resets I do, it won't work unless plugged into the AC adaptor.
This is a new replacement and it was fully charged yesterday when it decided to stop working.

  • My iPhone will connect to my wifi but then the internet won't work?

My iPhone will connect to my wifi but then the internet won't work?

Try holding down the power button until it says "slide to power off" slide, and wait about 20 seconds, then hold the power button down again until you see the apple logo.

  • I have to go through network diagnostics every time, how do I fix that?

Every time I connect to the wireless internet in this house I have to go through network diagnostics and type in the password and click click click. My friend fixed it once so that it just automatically connected without making me go through network diagnostics at all, but I connected to another network here and now every single time I want to go back to my original network I have to go through network diagnostics again! I want to automatically go to the original network, I don't want to use the other one. My "friend" wouldn't tell me how he fixed it, and now that I need it done again we're not talking any more. Please tell me what to do on Leopard so I don't have to go through network diagnostics again! It's really annoying..

I asked for help with your problem,
and this was sent back to me by a great helper here:
+The OP (That's you, cool) will need to know the connections settings info that was provided by his ISP (or IT manager if he is using a shared network such as is furnished at work, school or apartment.) These data include his username and password that he has been entering manually, but other info may also be required depending on how his service establishes connections. If he does not have this info, he should contact the IT manager or ISP's Help center.+
+To be sure he is starting fresh, I suggest that OP restart his Mac immediately before undertaking the setup process.+
+For the simplest way to establish the network, OP can use Network Setup Assistant, which is available by clicking the "Assist me... > Assistant" buttons once OP has opened the System Preferences > Network. If his Mac is working correctly, using Network Setup Assistant should establish and save the default connection settings for him merely by following the on-screen prompts and using his connection info from his ISP/IT. If he has problems or want to do it manually so he can see exactly what is happening, he can follow the instructions from the following Help files.+
+Start with Mac Finder > Help for Mac OS X 10.5 Help: Setting up a network connection service.+
+I use a separate location for "Home Wireless" versus "Home Ethernet." Setting up two locations lets me change connections with just one (Location) mouse click from the Apple Menu. For help see Mac Finder > Help for Mac OS X 10.5 Help: Adding a network location.+
+To designate a particular wireless connection(s) as the default network connection at this location, see Mac Finder > Help for Mac OS X 10.5 Help: Choosing preferred AirPort networks.+
+These Help pages are so clear I cannot say them any simpler.+
+Going into "/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras" is unnecessary. There is a checkbox for this in System Preferences > Network. Once there, click on "Airport" in the sidebar in the left side of the pane and then select the checkbox near the bottom.+
I hope this helps you, cool.

  • Internet won't work on MacBook Pro unless using ethernet cable

Hi everyone, I'm hoping someone can help me with this.  We recently got a new NETGEAR N600 wirelesss ADSL2 modem router and when trying to set it up I found I couldnt use my MacBook, we had to use a the old PC to do it.  The connection is set up and my iPhone and iPad as well as our PCs have no problem picking up the wireless signal, however I cannot seem to wirelessly connect wiht my MacBook Pro.  I hav e to use the ethernet cable if I want to use internet on my MacBook.  In Network Preferences it says wi-fi is connected however when I open up Safari it says that there is no connection.  My friends have also been experiencing this problem with their macbooks lately.
Does anyone know how to get around this?
    Thanks

    Reboot the modem.

  • C and H keys won't work unless I use the shift button. How can I fix this?

Now the 'V' button no longer works unless I use the shift key. I do not enjoy having to switch back and forth between cap-locks on and cap-locks off.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
    * [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • My MacBook Pro shuts off and then Internet won't work!

Okay so my MacBook Pro used to work perfect but then one day it just shut off then didn't turn back on for like 10 mins! And my charger didn't work so I figured I just had to unplug the middle part! But when I start it back up there are pop ups asking if I should accept or deny! And my clock is set to 2008 and I try to connect to the Internet but it gets an exclamation mark and never works! I've tried restarting it but no change! And sometimes it will work but it won't work for like a week then it does this like every week

I would take your machine into your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them run diagnostics on it and give you an estimate on what it would cost to fix the entire machine. This will be free. If the estimate sounds outrageous, you can always ask about the Apple falt rate repair policy - you could have a 'like new' machine for less than $350US.

  • Airport Express won't work unless it's behind a router...

After experimenting with my airport express to try and get it to work with some game of mine, I discovered that my airport doesn't get an internet signal unless the connection from the modem to the base station goes through a router.
This is really strange... does anyone know anyway to fix this?
By the way, yes, all my cables work, I use SBC Yahoo DSL as my ISP, I have a speedstream modem, and my connection apparently has to go through an Asante router, although it may work through other ones.

    OK,
Is the IP address of the form 192.168.x.x, or 10.x.x.x, or something else ? This will help us identify if the ISP is allocating you an IP address dynamically, or maybe you have to key it (just once) because they've allocated you a static IP address.
The DNS server addresses present but greyed out is what I hoped to see. I had hoped Router address would be set (and greyed out), this is where all your internet traffic gets sent to. I'm also a bit puzzled at the Subnet mask not being 255.255.255.255, which would be the normal value for ISPs to set on customers connections.
If you plug your mac (if possible) straight into the ethernet cable that comes out of the modem, put the Network system preference on Automatic, and then check the Built-in Ethernet in the same system preference, what does it show ? same values as appeared in the Airport config ? This is just to rule out any other factors.
I'm sure the answer we need is in the configuration of your (nearly redundant) router. It will have settings, either already set, or allocated by the ISP that we need to mirror in the Airport. If you're comfortable in the router configuration, print (or screen dump) all the details, then we know what works and can begin to configure the Airport in a similar fashion.
