  • Macbook Internet works only on the stairs

Im new to this and this is a bit of a story so please bear with me..
Macbook 10.4.11 owned by my brother was re-called for battery issues about 4 years ago, when the macbook was returned, wifi would only be received in close proximity to the router. This issue has never been fixed and now i have 'inherited' the computer i want to get the problem sorted. I used the mac last year at university using an ethernet cable which was fine, but in 2 weeks i will be in a new house and want to be able to use wifi.
At the moment The macbook can only receive wireless internet on the stairs, not in my bedroom, the lounge, anywhere else. Other family members have ample wireless on their computers all over the house, so I believe it is not the router (SKY) which is the problem. My brother has taken the laptop to several university houses, and every-time, it will only work near the router. The guy in the apple shop said if the laptop wifi card (apologies for my lack of technical details) was broken, the internet wouldn't work at all, or would work randomly and in different areas of the house.
My first visit to the genius bar, the guy said it might be interference with neighbours wifi, and so he downloaded AP Tracker onto the macbook. On the stairs it picked up our internet only, above and below the stairs it cut off and picked up no other internet in the house. I presumed then that it wasn't to do with neighboring internet.
The second visit to genius bar, the guy said it might be some corrupt data and that i would need to back up the macbook and restore to factory settings and start again. I'm hesitant to try this as I have programs such as word and photoshop which I don't know if I will get back after the backup (do not have the installation disks). It seems a bit drastic for a process which might not even work.
If anyone has experienced this problem or can give me some help it would be greatly received as im getting a bit desperate. Also if I do need to backup and factory set my macbook, would I get photoshop, word e.t.c back without the disks. Thanks for your time.

    Hi melloncollie1,
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
A similar thing happened to me with my ibook a few months ago and I was advised to lift the keyboard and make sure the Airport card was fitted correctly which it was but the aerial that plugs into the card was not fully engaging. So check that it is fully inserted. Mine gave quite a loud click when it did. It works fine now anywhere.
    Good luck,
    Alan

  • I turned off cellular data, and data roaming while traveling abroad.  I turned them back on upon arriving back home, but now only the wi-fi features works when trying to connect to the internet.   Texting works, no internet function works unless wi-fi???

I turned off my cellula data and data roaming while abroad.  I turned them back on when returning home.  But now I can only access internet and mail functions when on wi-fi.  texting works.  The 3G access to the internet isn't working now.  3g is on.  What do I need to do to restore non-wi-fi internet function.  Roaming is on s well.  ?????

    Try to reset your iPhone:
    Settings>>General>>Reset>>Reset All Settings
You will need to rejoin all wi-fi and/or bluetooth connections
You will need to set up your settings of your choice.
Information (such as contacts and Calendars) and meida (such as music, videos, apps) are NOT affected.

  • GPS does not appear to work with data-roaming off and no wi-fi network

I have been using an application called imarkmyspot to produce way-points for synchronising with my camera. When I am in my home country this works fine and a GPS location is found quickly.
I've recently been abroad and had data-roaming turned off to avoid high expense. The point is that in this situation the GPS does not work (with imarkmyspot or Goggle Maps) unless I can access an open wi-fi network.
So my question is, is this correct? Does GPS only work with either data access on or when within range of an open wi-fi network.
If this is feature (bug) of the iPhone then this makes applications such as imarkmyspot rather useless when travelling. Alternatively it could be imarkmyspot that has this problem of course. But I'm quite sure Google Maps did not work either in this situation either.

The iPhone's GPS does work without a data connection.
Two weeks ago on a work-related trip I knew I'd be traveling a rural highway that would leave me without data/voice from any source for at least 45 minutes (no GSM service). Before leaving a city with data, I zoomed out using Google Maps far enough to show most of my route, then "nudged" the map so the application wouldn't try to get a data update for the map. I simply used the top power button to turn on and off the screen. The iPhone and GMaps tracked me through for the entire blacked-out section of my trip - I made sure the device had a decent view of the sky and it got a fix and nailed the location within a few seconds.
Ironically, I'm returning that device in the next few hours for an exchange. The GPS hardware, it seems, has failed about a week ago - the device gets A-GPS fixes now (it shows the nearby 3G and EDGE towers), but won't lock in for more than a second or two. My iPhone's GPS worked, and now it doesn't - AppleCare told me my GPS hardware has failed - and you're may be exhibiting the same failure.
Some A-GPS devices use their sources to get close by - like my TomTom GO and the ephemeris files it grabs from their servers to get updates on where satellite locations are - and then use the on-board chip to nail the device's position. From what I understand of the iPhone's assistance mechanism, the data tower's and Wi-Fi physical location needs to be correct and available in an accessible database somewhere - my iPhone was showing me near Houston TX (2200 mi/3500 km distant from my actual location) when using 3G data until the data source was updated.

  • Internet is not working on cellular data after updating 8.0.2 in iphone 5s , wifi connectivity is fine , but no internet connection error message is start blinking even after cellular data is on , please help .

I am using iPhone 5s , internet is not working on cellular data even after it is on , wifi is working properly . Please help apple team.

    Hello Mario:
I'm actually surprised that Apple continues to push out 8.02 without addressing these issues. The problem will only anger more users and certainly finger-poking at Airplane Mode isn't the answer. This is an iOS8 code problem and no amount of 'resetting' is providing a reliable fix/solution that sticks.
These issues with loss of cell connectivity, apps that have lost functionality, etc., which are all directly associated to the arrival of iOS8, are so widespread in the user community and pervasive within individual iPads that it's clear there are significant fundamental problems with this release. Given the problems are so blatant, it's fair to ask the question of how they got by the Apple validation team.
What is the status at Apple on rolling out a fully V&V'd version to resolve this?  Respectfully, when it comes to some of my more useful apps, my personal iPad has become a paperweight. The user forums are full of these iOS8 complaints for several weeks and there doesn't seem to be a competent answer from Apple.  Even a "We're aware and we're working on it" would be well received.
Any hope that you can provide will be appreciated. (I'll be monitoring the thread on my Dell laptop because, well, my iPad is i-Inop!).
    Thanks!

  • Iphone data roaming - option not working ( urgent please help)

I am going on a long holiday (3months) to various countries from Canada and I will be using my phone only for the first leg of the journey for 15 days just to keep in touch with my family to say I'm safe and all. I dont want to unlock or jailbreak my phone.
Is there a way to disable the 3G to avoid roaming charges ( Since I am on a contract I cant ask my provider to block it) I turn on the data roaming option but the 3G sign is still shown and its still connecting to the network
    Is there any other way

"I turn on the data roaming option but the 3G sign is still shown and its still connecting to the network"
Are you out of the country when you do this? It won't disable data when you are in your home network.
    From the manual:
"Data Roaming turns on Internet and visual voicemail access over a cellular data
network when you’re in an area not covered by your carrier’s network. For example,
when you’re traveling, you can turn off Data Roaming to avoid potential roaming
charges. By default, Data Roaming is turned off. "
BTW, I'm not sure how helping you avoid a roaming bill is urgent. Some have much more "urgent" problems, like crashes, unresponsive iphones, etc.

  • 9300 Curve wifi problem - cannot connect to internet using only wifi once data turned off

I've got a 9300 Curve with a data plan from Rogers. I want to use my wifi in hotspots when I go overseas without using my data. I have no problems connecting to wifi networks. Once I turn off my data services, my connections to the wifi network show that the signal is still just as strong, but I can't use my browser, facebook, bbm, etc. - message is "unable to connect to internet" when I try and access my browser. This problem occurs whether I'm using a public hotspot or my home router. I used to be able to access wifi without using data from Rogers on my older Curve (can't remember the model), so I don't think it has anything to do with my plan.
Any suggestions/advice would be much appreciated!

    Thanks for the reply!
Did you mean "leave data ON and turn off data roaming"? But that would just turn off my data while I'm roaming, and while I'm not roaming, it'll still access through data and not through wifi like I would prefer. That's what I understand, but pls correct me if I'm wrong! I guess I meant to also mention that whether I'm in my home zone or overseas, I still can't use my browser, bbm, etc through wifi only, with data turned off...it just says there's no connection to the server/internet, even though it shows that I'm connected to a wifi network.

Thanks,  After changing my settings in face time per your suggestion, (it needed to be done),  I turned off cellular data and data roaming and made a call using face time.  It worked!  Great way to stay in touch while overseas without the need for those egregious phone data plans.

  • Windows phone (lumia 930) cannot receive office365 email (company email) via internetional data roaming

when I travelled overseas, i found I cannot receive the office365 (company) email via mobile data roaming (even with manual sync), only can get email via WIFI. The internet access is OK, I even can receive the hotmail / gmail / yahoo

Lumia 520 - Video playback issues with new IE browser after WP8.1 upgrade
As title says, I'm experiencing many issues in my Nokia Lumia 520 with the new IE browser included in the Windows Phone 8.1 upgrade.
As example, the following page has an embedded video that when I try to play the audio starts but the display comes absolutely black and doesn't respond to the windows button, back, search, anything.... The only way to regain control is pressing the lock/unlock button to restore and reinitiate the browser app:
    http://www.engadget.com/2014/09/04/ibm-wants-to-kill-the-hard-drive/
As this example many other websites with videos content like Coursera or Edx my phone has issues to play the content using this new video player embedded in the IE browser included in Windows Phone 8.1 upgrade (Nokia Cyan).
Notes that before this upgrade I haven't any issue with videos reproduction in the browser part of Windows Phone 8 (Nokia Amber).
There is more people experience this kind of problems with videos in the browser?
This is annoying, I'm enrolled in many MOOC courses and my phone was the ideal device to visualize the videos but after the WP8.1 upgrade this use is impossible.
I had no issues with Youtube website, so I don't know if this is an issue with specific kind of video format like flash(flv),mp4 vs. html5,etc. What I know is that my Lumia with WP8 had no issues with this websites,no matter the full-screen approach, but now with WP8.1 is a painful experience.
I would like to know the experience of other users about this topic.
Thanks and I hope Microsoft/Nokia dev team see that and fix asap

  • HT1695 I am connected to my wifi and have turned my data roaming off but my phone is still not connecting to the internet. Why is this?

Am struggling to get online through my i-phone at home. It is fine at work where I have signal (but I go through the work wifi anyway), whereas at home I cannot get online at all, despite having strong wifi signal and disabling my data roaming on the phone. I am not very good with technology! Can anyone work out what I'm doing wrong please?

If the modem is also a router, either use the modem in bridge and run pppoe client on the TC.. that is assuming ADSL or similar eg vdsl. If it is cable service.. and the modem is a router, then bridge the TC.. go to internet page and select connect by ethernet and below that set connection sharing to bridge.
Please tell us more about the modem if the above gives you issues.

My iPad Mini with retina display suddenly will not connect to the Internet. It shows full wifi bars, yet no web pages will load. My Internet is working with all other apple devices in my house. The iPad also no longer works with celluar data. I'm not sure what has happened. It was working fine a few hours ago. I have tried resetting it, ive restarted my browser etc. I tried to erase all data from my Ipad but I can't do that because it needs to sign into my Apple ID and use the Internet!

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are drooping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

why does a standalone program created in Labview 8.5 try connecting to the internet when the program only reads data through the serial port? Firewalls object to progams that contact the internet without permission.
The created program is not performing a command I have written when it tries to connect to the internet, it must be Labview that is doing it. How do I stop this from happening?
Any help would be very appreciated.

    It looks that way..
"When LabVIEW starts it contacts the service

the firewall. This is done in case there were services that were not
unregistered the last time LabVIEW executed- for example from VIs that

This is not yet fixed in LV2009.
