Interpreting dual-byte (Japanese specifically) character codes from HTML?

I've got a VI that uses the Internet Toolkit to load a list of pages from the Web (one at a time) and then parses the HTML to extract elements such as the page title. It works great...except when I hit Asian-language pages.
For instance.
http://digital.ni.com/worldwide/bwcontent.nsf/web/all/576474D6E4C6F53D49256BD50029AE5D
I've got the Japanese language pack installed, so the title shows up fine in my browser (dual-byte characters display). However, when I "View Source", the title tag looks like this:
LabVIEW Visionソフトウェアが組込み式ビジョン能力を提供 - News - National Instruments
That's basically what LabVIEW is seeing as well. Any tips for converting these to dual-byte characters? Ultimately, I'm putting the information in a spreadsheet. I've got the Japanese IME installed in Excel, but that doesn't seem to help me out much.
Any ideas?
TIA,
Tim

Hi Tim,
I think the issue is related to the fact that LabVIEW is a multi-byte program and does not support unicode. I can make a couple suggestions to see if this will help:
1. Change your system settings so that the regional settings are in Japanese. There is another discussion forum post that discusses this issue with Chinese characters that might help you out:
Discussion Forum: Can the English version of LabVIEW 7.0 support Chinese text strings?
There's also an excellent KB on the bottom of that discussing LabVIEW's multilingual support.
2. There's also this discussion forum that talks specifically about Japanese languages. You can try out Greg McKaskle's suggestion as well:
Discussion Forum: How do I get LabVIEW 5.1.1 to allow entry of Japanese text in Windows 98?
Hope this helps. Good luck.

Another user hit this problem this week. I debugged it and posted the reply in the discussion thread:
http://technet.oracle.com:89/ubb/Forum11/HTML/002799.html
It's a JDK bug in character set conversion that has a simple workaround, just indicate the ISO-8859-1 encoding on your XSQL page. See the end of this other thread for details.

Hi Bart,
Using standard action handler it is not possible but one other option is to take a copy of RSMW0_CONFIG_ERRORHANDLER and enhance it to send actions based on organisational units.

• Convert from HTML Character Codes in Applescript

just use the skip(long) method of the input stream that reads the text file and skip over the desired number of bytes

• Unwanted character codes (& etc) from XML displaying in Flash

I have a static, UTF-8 encoded XML document that gets loaded
by a custom movie clip class into an array and then items from the
array are read and displayed in a dynamic text field that is
attached to the movie clip, depending on which one is rolled over.
Everything works perfectly except that an ampersand displays as
& apostrophes display as ' and quotes display as
", even if I use the special character inside the XML.
Higher level character codes actually display properly, so
character codes for circle shaped bullets, registered trade mark
symbol, Greek characters, etc, work! But a blessed ampersand does
not.
Setting the dynamic text field to either read as HTML or not
read as HTML makes no difference.
Using CDATA tags in the XML makes no difference. In fact,
when I use CDATA tags and enclose text containing a special
character code, Flash goes the extra step of converting the
ampersand in the special character code to &!! So
" becomes ".
Using & just gets converted to &. So Flash's
XML parser is parsing the &#38 to an ampersand, which Flash's
text parser then converts to &. WHY? And how do I stop it?
I found the function below to clean out the unwanted
characters, and it works, but it seems a ridulous length to go to.
And I probably have to extend it to accomodate whatever other
characters don't work in Flash, but I don't know what those might
be until I encounter them.
Also, the function works whether I use a special character in
the XML or not. ie, if I put an actual "&" into the XML, this
function will display "&" and if I put & into the XML,
it will still display as "&".
Thanks for any help.

• Extracting the largest code from a specific section in the report

Post Author: MikeA-ICE
CA Forum: General
I have a report that has 8 sections, called Report Areas. Each area is limited by a range of codes (Group1). For the whole report the codes range from 01 to 93. There is one particular area in the report, Area 2, that spans 01 to 29. I need to extract the largest code from Area 2 but I never know from one time to the next when running the report what codes will be included. There could be any number of codes in a particular run of the report. I could have 1, 3,4,5, 7, 11, & 16 one time and 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 12, 21, 23, and 28 the next. I tried this formula:If {CBIRptTotalSummary.ReportArea} = 2ThenNthLargest (1, {CBIRptTotalSummary.Group1})This consistently printed 93 in Area 2 of the report since 93 is the largest code of Group1 in the report. I've tried numerous other formulas and I can't get Crystal to look only at the groups contained in Area 2 and tell me what the largest group is in that area. How would I accomplish this? Thanks very much for your help!!Mike

• How to create a database for sample code from Tutorial/Book?

I want to try out the sample code from [http://shop.oreilly.com/product/0636920013471.do] for the book SQL Pocket Guide 3rd Ed.
I have downloaded the oracle vm/appliance for oracle 11g2 and I have started sqlplus as sysdba.
I'm feeling overwhelmed with these links describing how to create a database:
[http://www.adp-gmbh.ch/ora/admin/creatingdbmanually.html]
[http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Oracle-7-HOWTO-3.html]
[http://www.adp-gmbh.ch/ora/admin/creatingdbmanually.html]
(1) What is the command to list the existing databases?
(2) What is the command to delete an existing database?
(3) When creating a new database with the create database command, is it necessary to specify the logfile, character set, national character set, datafile, sysaux datafile, undo tablespace, temp table space? Do these have reasonable defaults? I'm not sure what proper directories are to specify for Linux and the examples are for windows.
Can someone give me a simplified create database command to create a database called 3rdEdPocketGuide? Should I follow the example at [http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Oracle-7-HOWTO-3.html] and instead of orcl use 3rdEdPocketGuide?
(4) What command do I use to execute the script that comes with the book SQL Pocket Guide 3rd Ed? This is the script that has all the drop table, create table and insert commands in it.
(5) What command do I use in sqlplus to set the current default database prior to running this script? Perhaps this is the connect command? I don't want my script to create tables in the system database.
(6) I tried the command "connect 3rdEdPocketGuide" and it prompted for a password! Yikes! What password? Do I need to specify a password when I create a database? I cannot tell if I have successfully created such a database or it is just prompting me for a password to thwart malicious users. Is it is possible to create databases which don't require a password or maybe a zero length password?
Thanks
Siegfried

Everyone:
Do I need to create a user using SQL*Plus first so I can login with "Oracle SQL Developer" so I create my database called? What would be the "create user" command I would execute?
OK, so I run sqlplus and issue these commands
create user siegfried identified by abc ;
grant connect to siegfried ;
connect siegfried/abc;
Now, how do I create a database? In Microsoft SQL Server one has to create a database first and if you just start creating tables without creating a database first, the tables will be created in the system database and this is usually undesirable.
Sometimes a database is known in the java connection string as the catalog. Is there any such analog in oracle SQL plus?
So now what do I do? I want to create a bunch of tables using my script I downloaded from 3rd Ed SQL Pocket Guide. Does my new user "siegfried" have the right to create tables? I guess I could try but I don't want to create tables in the system database.
I noticed I can also use "Oracle SQL Developer" to connect with my new "siegfried" account. It seems that I should have been able to connect with sysdba... strange.
So now I am connected in the "Oracle SQL Developer" and I see no list of databases.

with below function I can only get rid of ^ , I want both the specific characters ^ and ^* to be removed at the same time.
SUBSTR(p.phys_sub_grp_2_desc,INSTR(p.phys_sub_grp_2_desc, '^') +1)

Another option is to boldly replace 'em:
SQL> with t as (
2 select '121.051^NP: FAMILY PRACTICE' str from dual union
3 select '121.051^*NP: FAMILY PRACTICE' from dual
4  )
5  --
6  -- actuel query:
7  --
8  select substr( replace(str, '*')
9               , instr(replace(str, '*'), '^')+1
10               ) str
11  from   t;
STR
NP: FAMILY PRACTICE
NP: FAMILY PRACTICE
2 rows selected.

• Detecting character encoding from BLOB stream... (PLSQL)

I'am looking for a procedure/function which can return me the character encoding of a "text/xml/csv/slk" file stored in BLOB..
For example...
I have 4 files in different encodings (UTF8, Utf8BOM, ISO8859_2, Windows1252)...
With java I'can simply detect the character encoding with JuniversalCharDet (http://code.google.com/p/juniversalchardet/)...
thank you

Solved...
On my local PC I have installed Java 1.5.0_00 (because on DB is 1.5.0_10)...
With Jdeveloper I have recompiled source code from:
http://juniversalchardet.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/src/org/mozilla/universalchardet
http://code.google.com/p/juniversalchardet/
After that I have made a JAR file and uploaded it with loadjava to my database...
C:\>loadjava -grant r_inis_prod -force -schema insurance2 -verbose -thin -user username/password@ip:port:sid chardet.jarAfter that I have done a java procedure and PLSQL wrapper example below:
public static String verifyEncoding(BLOB p_blob) {
if (p_blob == null) return "-1";
try
InputStream is = new BufferedInputStream(p_blob.getBinaryStream());
UniversalDetector detector = new UniversalDetector(null);
byte[] buf = new byte[p_blob.getChunkSize()];
int nread;
while ((nread = is.read(buf)) > 0 && !detector.isDone()) {
detector.handleData(buf, 0, nread);
detector.dataEnd();
is.close();
return detector.getDetectedCharset();
catch(Exception ex) {
return "-2";
}as you can see I used -2 for exception and -1 if input blob is null.
then i have made a PLSQL procedure:
function f_preveri_encoding(p_blob in blob) return varchar2 is
language Java name 'Zip.Zip.verifyEncoding(oracle.sql.BLOB) return java.lang.String';After that I have uploaded 2 different txt files in my blob field.. (first one is encoded with UTF-8, second one with WINDOWS-1252)..
example how to call:
declare
l_blob blob;
l_encoding varchar2(100);
begin
select vsebina into l_blob from dok_vsebina_dokumenta_blob where id = 401587359 ;
l_encoding := zip_util.f_preveri_encoding(l_blob);
if l_encoding = 'UTF-8' then
dbms_output.put_line('file is encoded with UTF-8');
elsif l_encoding = 'WINDOWS-1252' then
dbms_output.put_line('file is encoded with WINDOWS-1252');
else
dbms_output.put_line('other enc...');
end if;
end;Now I can get encoding from blob and convert it to database encoding and store datas in CLOB field..
Here you have a chardet.jar file if you need this functionality..
