Interrupted upgrade on an iBook = kernel panic
I was trying to upgrade an old G3 iBook (10.2) to Tiger, and borrowed a firewire DVD drive from a friend. I won't bore you with why, but I had to interrupt the upgrade and start over. No matter what I do now, I get a kernel panic starting up. I've tried Disk Utility, both from an earlier install CD (I don't know how to start up from the firewire DVD drive) and from a G5 connected via firewire, starting the iBook while holding down "T" on the keyboard. Nothing helps.
I can read and save most of the data via the firewire connection to the G5, but my iPod is linked to this computer, I'm editing two mailing lists from it, and a lot of my data is embedded in programs on it. Is there anything I can do to recover this disk, say by removing recently written and updated system files and rebooting?
No, I can see the iBook drive from the G5 via "target disk mode". I just can't get it to boot by itself. Are you saying I can connect the unbootable iBook to the G5 by target disk mode and also connect the DVD drive by firewire and upgrade the iBook that way, by connecting the upgrade DVD to the iBook through a G5 intermediary?

G3 ibook kernel panics in 10.3.9
Hi, I'm trying to revive my old G3 ibook dual usb - it had run fine in OS X (10.3.9) for a couple of years (after replacing the hard drive) - but suddenly started getting freezes/kernel panics etc. I changed the ram - did complete erase and installs and all the usual things - resetting the pram/vram etc. but without success - the display is fine - so I'm assuming the logic board is ok. The odd thing is that OS 9.2.2 works fine with no problems - so hardware doesn't seem to be an issue.
Any suggestions? It's a shame to dump it as it's still very useful - though using OS 9 is rather limiting.
Barry SHi Ronda,
It was your advice some years ago that saved this ibook from the trash by suggesting I replace the hard drive - so thanks for that. The original CDs - yes I do have (OS 9.1 - 4 CDs) - which I've used successfully to restore it.
In answer to your question - yes I believe the 3 x OS 10.3 install discs are the retail version. The ibook is 500MHz. Optical drive is a CD-RW CRX 700E - driver version 1.4.7.
It came with a 256MB ram module - which I replaced with a 512MB module - I have tried swapping these - as I know some kernel panics can be caused by bad ram - but still the same. When it's running on 10.3.9 it sometimes even freezes when booting from the start up disk.
This may just be my imagination but it does appear hotter running on 10.3.9 rather than OS 9.22.
As I said in my post, it did run fine for a couple of years - so these freezes and kernel panics are a bit of a mystery. -
New iBook, kernel panics when awakened from sleep
I've been going nuts for several weeks now due to issues with my new iBook G4. When it is not plugged in, it may be fine when it wakes from sleep, or else it may wake to a black screen of death or else wake up and then freeze (requiring a restart) a few seconds after waking up.
I've reset the PMU several times, removed the third-party RAM (which I thought resolved the issue, until two crashes today when waking up unplugged), reset the PRAM, ran Disk Utility, did an archive and install of 10.4.2, etc. For a day, it would also go through infinite wake/sleep cycles when plugged in with the lid closed, but it resolved on its own within 24 hours. I was all set to send it in to Apple when the issue resolved itself on its own.
But I'm stumped as to the nature of the kernel panics/freezes, etc. They only happen when the iBook is unplugged from AC, USB, etc. and it is not 100% predictable. It may happen the second time I'm waking it up after not being connected to anything. Or it may be fine.
Here's the panic log from today, the details of which are identical to the panic that happened an hour earlier:

Suggestions? Is this really a hardware issue relating to the AirPort card, or is it something related to kernel extensions? It does not appear to be a user folder-related issue (I tested that as well). Thanks!I've been having similar problems with my iBook G4/1GHz computer. I haven't yet figured it out when or why it crashes after sleep, but this is sure: everytime there is USB mouse connected, it does that crashing. I bought mighty mouse to make sure, it wasn't the mouse which caused the problems. But no, it wasn't the mouse.
I've tried to google some solutions, but haven't found any. This is very annoying problem. Anyway I can get that crashlog after reboot?
Symptons:
When lid is opened, fan's are started, but no picture or network connection or anything is alive. Display is black. Requires reboot to get it up and running again.
I have run hardware tests on processor, usb, video ram and ram and all have passed. -
Upgraded and now get Kernel Panic
Upgraded tonight and immediately got Kernel Panic's and now cannot boot from disk or in safe mode. Please please help. This is why I didn't want to upgrade.
I've been running SL for over a year on my 24" iMac. SL isn't the issue; most likely, bad RAM.

Kernel panic after installing 10.7.4
Hi,
Unfortunately, I've installed the latest update 10.7.4 from apple. Since I've upgraded I had 8 Kernel panics happening sometimes without even touching the macbook pro.
I'm really disappointed about this update. Do you have any ideas about this ? Will Apple provide a fix ?
this is the latest kernel panic report :

Kernel panic in 10.8.2 solved (for me)
Thanks to the Apple Support crew who spent hours on the phone with me figuring this out. S, you are great!
Background:
I have seven machines from Apple. These range from Macbook Air to iMac to numerous others, all Intel-based. Over a period of a month I began upgrading from 10.8.1 to 10.8.2, one machine at a time, and with days betweeen working on the next machine. Each time I upgraded a machine I began experiencing kernel panics upon startup on the upgraded machine. These kernel panics began the same day I did the upgrade, and often I'd have three kernel panics back-to-back before I was ever able to log in.
Apparent Cause of the kernel Panics:
I use the word "apparent" as not to lay blame. Nevertheless, the common denominator on all the panic machines was the remote login software called LogMeIn (as far as I can tell).
How to Stop the Panics:
I suggest doing this only if you can do without using logmein. If you can't, you might want to move or rename files rather than delete them, or beat on the logmein support staff to hurry up and fix this apparent conflict.
LogMeIn has files and daemon processes all over the place. Open a terminal window and change directory to /Library/Application Support/LogMeIn
The % sign is the command prompt in the following examples. Don't type the % sign in your command.
"cd" is the command for changing directories, "ls" is the command for listing directory contents, and "pwd" is the command for identifying where you are in the file structure.
cd like this:
% cd /Library/Application\ Support/LogMeIn
Note the "\" backslash character above. That lets terminal know you are entering a space between the words Application and Support.
You may have to do additional hunting, but find a file in the LogMeIn directory (or possibly a slightly differently named LogMeIn directory) called uninstall.sh The file uninstall.sh is the LogMeIn uninstaller, and it will be in one of the logmein directories.
Run the LogMeIn uninstaller from inside the directory where it is located:
%./uninstall.sh
The uninstaller doesn't seem to do much uninstalling, but it does stop a few daemon processes from being cranked up. You've now killed most of the logmein daemon processes but not all of them. You will also still have the round logmein icon up top on your command bar and the LogMeInGui application showing up in the startup list rolling through your console.
Go back to the finder, and look in Macintosh HD/Library/Internet Plugins. Find the logmein directory and delete it.
At this point, the kernel panics will stop, but you'll still have a few logmein daemons running and the icon will still be on your command bar up top.
Either spotlight "logmein" or search a few library directories for logmein subdirectories. Delete them all.
Search these:
MacintoshHD/Library/Application Support/ ... any logmein stuff in here
MacintoshHD/Library/LaunchAgents/
MacintoshHD/Library/LaunchDaemons/
Under your username you need to look in the Library directory. If you haven't already created an alias for it so you can see it all the time, press the option key while you are in finder and already looking at the "Go" menu from up top.
In username/Library, look in these directories: (and do it for each username on you machine to be safe)
/username/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
/username/Library/LaunchAgents/
To round out the extermination, you might want to do one final spotlight for anything logmein-related, and delete it.
For the record, I used logmein daily to connect to my office and to help administer remote machines. I'll gladly return to using the software once this weird system killer has been fixed. Other than the kernel panics it caused with 10.8.2, I found logmein to be some of the most user-friendly remote access software around. I was never fully comfortable with all the daemon processes, and as for security, it always gave me the creeps, but those are my own personal disorders....
I haven't had a kernel panic since, and I also no longer spend every waking hour of my time at home logged into my office machine. Double whammy.Nice work, thanks for the report, hopefully it'll help someone else!

Kernel Panics in Mavericks - Can Someone Interpret EtreCheck Report?
I am having a lot of trouble with a MacBook Pro 2010. Ever since upgrading to Mavericks, the kernel panics have happened constantly, and it seems random. Nothing external is ever hooked up to the computer, other than headphones, and time machine over the network. I've tried deleting start up files from the library, plist stuff, re-set the PRAM, swapped out the physical RAM, checked the hard disk, etc. Everything I can think of, everything I can find on the internet. I think it must be some 3rd party software, but can't figure out what.
Does this EtreCheck report shed any light on this? I am so frustrated! I would really appreciate any help, thank you!

I also found the log from the last kernel panic, but I am totally clueless as to how to read it. Does this give more info about it possibly being software vs. hardware?

Mac OS X (10.4.2) -
10.4.9 Upgrade: Fails. Reboot results in Kernel Panic ACPI error
I am upgrading 11 MacBook Pros 10.4.6 to 10.4.9. Becasue they are all on a slow Wifi I am using the manual updates via a thumb drive.
So far 2 out of 6 have failed the install process. One gave me a general error. I tried to re-run the program but when I did the font for the drop down menu turned into all boxes with capital As inside them. In both cases when I have rebooted I have gotten a Kernel Panic ACPI error. I have tried all the Kernel Panic tricks mentioned in the 10.4.9 threads. I am now reinstalling on the two machines.
1 of 6 did the install just fine but is now stopped on the "Starting Mac OS X..." screen with a full blue bar.
Does anyone have any idea what is wrong? You may find the following useful:
From a recent article at MacFixit:
Mac OS X 10.4.9 Special Report: Update procedure recommendation
First, make a full backup of your current Mac OS X installation -- preferably a clone ( try SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner). If something goes wrong, or you experience a major incompatibility after updating, the backup will prove invaluable.
Next, if you are the cautious type, run a disk repair on the volume targeted for installation. You can use an n alternative startup drive or your Mac OS X installation disc. If you are starting up from your Mac OS X install disc, put the disc in your optical drive and restart holding down the "C" key. After your system starts up and you've selected your language, go to the "Utilties" menu and select "Disk Utility." Use the "Repair Disk" function. After disk repairs are complete, restart from your normal startup drive and continue.
Avoid performing any other operations (in Mac OS X or third-party applications) while the update process is occurring.
Performing other tasks during the update process potentiates various issues, including problems with prebinding (which is happening during the "Optimizing the system" phase of the update process) and others that can occur when files are being replaced by the update are also being read/written by the currently logged in user. You should not only refrain from launching applications or working with files during the update process, but also from putting the system to sleep, disconnecting/connecting devices, and other potentially interruptive actions.
In addition, before installing the update, make sure all Apple-installed applications and utilities are in their original locations. Moving one of these applications to a different location on your hard drive can lead to an incomplete update. Also, disconnect any FireWire/USB devices before applying Mac OS X 10.4.9 (except for your startup drive, if it is FireWire or USB, and your keyboard/mouse), then re-connect the devices one by one (checking for issues created by any particular device) after the update process is complete and the system has restarted. Also, note that the first restart after applying Mac OS X 10.4.9 may be abnormally long. Subsequent restarts should take place at normal speed.
And this further article from MacFixit is also very important:
When a Mac OS X update won't install with "Volume does not meet requirements for this update" message
The error message "Volume does not meet requirements for this update" may appear when attempting to install a Mac OS X updater or a full release from disc. Generally the problem falls into one of the following categories:
Make sure you are using the right updater (Server vs. client) There are usually a few varieties of the same Mac OS X update version. Make sure that you are not trying to install the Intel client build on a PowerPC-based Mac, or the Server build on a Mac OS X client system.
Although we generally recommend using the standalone Mac OS X updaters rather than Software Update, the latter method will generally correctly identify the copy of Mac OS X applicable to your current system state.
Retail vs. shipped-with-system (build numbers) Different Macs ship with different builds of Mac OS X, and one build may not be compatible with a different system. The build that ships with a MacBook Core 2 Duo, for instance, may not properly install on a Mac Pro. Hence you may receive the "Volume does not meet requirements for this update" message when mixing and matching systems and discs.
Some retail copies of Mac OS X 10.4.x may also be unable to install on some systems that require newer builds.
In addition, it appears that while some builds will install on specific systems, those systems will then refuse to accept subsequent updates. To ensure compatibility, inspect the following matrices:
• Mac OS: Versions, builds included with Intel-based Macs
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303315
• Mac OS: Versions, builds included with PowerPC Macs (since 1998)
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
and note that you should not use a Mac OS version earlier than the one included with the computer.
Combo vs. Delta Remember that delta Mac OS X updaters can only update systems version-to-version, e.g. Mac OS X 10.4.8 to Mac OS X 10.4.9. Combo updaters can bring any version within the scope of a major release (Panther, Tiger, etc.) up-to-date, e.g. Mac OS X 10.4.3 to Mac OS X 10.4.9.
Attempting to run a delta update on anything other than the directly precedent version may result in the "Volume does not meet requirements for this update" message. -
Kernel panics with iBook G4 and 10.3.9 (modem kext)
Upon upgrading my iBook G4 to 10.3.9, I began recieving a rash of kernel panics (about 1-2 a day) . This was quite a change from the relatively solid machine I had previous ( about a panic a month with 10.3.8 with heavy daily use ). I initially suspected some ram failure but after extensive testing (bit flip, pattern, etc.) in single user mode eliminated that possibility.
The panic log contiuously pointed at the MotorolaSM56K driver. I now suspected a kernel module/kernel incompatibility problem. After activating root and kextunloading that class I was able to regain some measure of stabilty ( about 4-5 days between crashes ). This stability varied as the class would be reloaded by OS under certain (unknown) conditions. As I have actually never used the built-in modem I have now decided to fully unload the AppleI2SModemFamily.kext extension, to avoid the SM56K class from starting.
Have others noticed similar issues when upgrading from 10.3.8 to 10.3.9? or with the modem kext? I am suprised at the poor quality of this "upgrade", having used X since 10.1 on my ibook G3 (that I have now kept at 10.3.8)
Is the modem kernel extension a red herring and its truly an issue in the kernel (that the modem extension exposes)?
attached are some snippets from my (now very long) panic.log:

iBook G4 Mac OS X (10.3.9)A reasonable possibility is that you upgraded without
first repairing the hard drive and permissions.
Although this may not help after the fact, I suggest
you give it a try:
Boot from your OS X Installer. Be sure to use the
installer for the version of OS X you have installed.
After the installer loads select Disk Utility from
the Installer menu (or Utilities menu if using
Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from
the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab,
then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports
any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair
Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are
reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait
until the operation completes, then quit DU and
return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer
for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
This I did yesterday and found a slew of permission setting problems - speaking to some endemic issues in the OS software/installation scripts. But after doing this repair (all were repairable) and reinstalling the COMBO update to 10.3.9 the problem persists. Thanks for the tip.
Keep in mind that RAM can pass the memory tests yet
not work properly with OS X. Therefore, you cannot
assume that because the RAM passed the memory tests
that it is fully functional with OS X. If you have
installed third-party RAM, the only definitive test
is to remove it and see if the kernel panics cease.
If they do, then add one module at a time and
re-test. When the panics recur you have identified
the faulty module.
Though I find disconcerting that Apple's POST routines are not sufficient to identify out of spec/incompatible RAM, I fully tested my memory (as mentioned) using memtest in single user mode. Memtest is a gnu program ported over from BSD unix that does exhaustive memory testing (ie the patterns, walking, etc that I mentioned)
Of course it's also possible there is a hardware
problem with the modem itself or that your upgrade to
10.3.9 is defective. After repairing the hard drive
and permissions you should reinstall the 10.3.9
update, but be sure to do so using the Combo updater.
You can download it from Apple's download site.
How the modem hardware failure mysteriously coincided with my 10.3.9 upgrade begs the question on how could be anything but a software issue... -
Help: successfully upgraded to 10.5, logged in and a kernel panic repeats
After successful upgrade to Leopard on my new iMac, I upgraded the iBook today. Successfully, I followed the prompts from Tiger 10.4.11, took about 1hr 10min. My iBook rebooted and then after about 20 rounds of spinning sticks, the login screen appeared. I logged in and spinning beach ball came up. A few moments later, the smoky window with white text and a power button behind it showed up telling me that iBook needs to be restarted. So I did, but that window is coming up every time I restart it and log in. Now what? From what I read this is a kernel panic and it happens after I log into the new leopard account. Does anyone know how to fix this? In many, many years of owning Macs, this is the first one of these where it panics. The good thing is, all my data is time machined on iMac, but still upgrading to Leopard was supposed to be a smooth experience, as shown in the Leopard video.

Random Kernel Panic after upgrade to kernel 2.6.36
Hello,
First of all, I apologise if this topic has already come up on the forums, but i've checked and can't see anything specifically relating to the problem im having, and ive also checked the bugs section of Archwiki and can't seem to see anything on there either. I'm not sure what information you guys need so ill just post as much as I can think of in this thread and then if you need any other info, ill post it on request.
The problem im having relates to a recent system update, which I did sometime within the past 4 weeks or so, after not upgrading for quite a while due to lack of free time.
In the last update I remember seeing it upgrading the kernel from 2.6.35 to 2.6.36, and since then I have been getting completly random kernel panics, whereby everything freezes. If I have audio output, the sound crashes and everything freezes, and the caps lock and scroll lock lights just flash in sync on the keyboard.
I have never had any problems like this in all the 7 months that i've been using Arch as a permenant OS.
Hardware:
Mobo: ASRock 775Dual-VSTA
Ram: 2GB (2x 1GB different brand sticks, same specs)
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.6GHz
GFX: Nvidia 8800GT 512MB
Plug and Play hardware that is normally always connected:
1. Zoom Wireless Dongle (4410b chipset, using ndiswrapper and the Zoom windows driver)
2. Digital TV Stick (Artec T1) with specific firmware and using MeTV as a viewer.
I've looked in all of the logs, including: dmesg, everything.log, daemon.log, errors.log, messages.log and all the other logs. But there is very little information relating to the crash in there. I'm guessing this is because its a kernel panic so it doesn't have chance to dump anything into the logs before it all crashes? If needs be I can post whichever logs you think will be most useful, but i'm using my laptop at the minute so I wont get chance to post them until tomorrow evening.
I've also tried enabling the testing repos and upgraded to kernel 2.6.37-1 to see if this suspected bug is fixed, but the panic seems to happen the same, if not more with kernel 2.6.37-1. At the minute I've rolled my system back to kernel 2.6.36 because it seemed a little more stable.
It doesn't just crash when your in the X server either. Theres been a few times when i've had a kernel panic during boot. Sometimes a couple of seconds after it starts to boot into Arch. And sometimes just as its processing the Udev events. But as I say it seems completely random rather than relating to specific events.
During one of the crashes at boot I got an error message on the screen which read:
Setting Latency Timer to 64
HDA Intel 0000:80:01.0: PCI: disallowing DAC for device
[<c131621b>] ? error_code+0x67/0x6c
Thats as much as I can think of at the minute. As I say, if you need any more information or need me to paste my log files then let me know and i will do that tomorrow.
Thanks in advance for the help, its much appreciated.
Scott.

I'm just guessing that its a kenel panic, as when it happens both the caps lock and scroll lock lights flash in sync, which is a sign of kernel panic isn't it?
My cpu is i686.
I've just read that post and i've downgraded udev to 164-3 to see if this solves the problem as some people have said in that post, although others later on in the thread say that this doesn't solve it for them. This morning it took me 4 restarts just to get arch to boot without the panic. I took a picture of the screen during the panic which ill post after work this evening, it looks pretty similar to the picture posted by "rabid_works" in the thread you pasted. I'm not sure about your post in the other threat that relates to the errors in the Oops report, could you clarify this so I can see if the problems reported in that thread are what I am experiencing?.
In the meantime, here is my pacman.log from 26.12.10 when I did the upgrade and the problems started. (note I have done upgrades following 26.12.10 to see if anything fixed the problem but with no luck, that is why the log is so long and I don't have any hosting anymore, so i've had to post it in quotes, I apologise).

I'm also going to run some hardware tests after work just to double check that all my hardware is functioning as it should so that will eliminate another potential cause.
If downgrading Udev to 164-3 doesn't solve the problem, i will try your version of it Daniel. And if that fails ill try downgrading the kernel to 2.6.35 or something and see if that solves it.
Sorry for the super long post,
Thanks again for your help.
Scott.

After upgrade to OSX Mavericks my 2009 MBP keeps crashing due to kernel panic
After upgrade to OSX Mavericks my 2009 MBP keeps crashing due to kernel panic (happens every 20 minutes or so). Please help me with this, it's getting very frustrating. Have tried disk utility, there were errors (file system was corrupted), the disk utility managed to repair the disk but the crashes continue.

Meanwhile here's the new etre-check and crash report:

Kernel panic since upgrade to core. Unable to mount root fs on
kernel panic : not syncing; VFS; Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (0,0)
I get that error since I upgraded archlinux to the latest version. The last time I upgraded before that was while the repos was still named current. Since I upgraded to core that happened.
What should I do? How could I fix this? I have this problem on the fallback kernel too.
Last edited by sokuban (2007-09-23 01:49:57)Hello All,
I have two hard drives installed in my pc, one is ATA and the other one is a SATA.
ATA is /dev/sda 200GB
SATA os /dev/sdb 40GB
I have installed arch linux onto sdb. grub also is installed to sdb.
Whenever I do a pacman -Syu and reboot I get the kernel panic not synching attempted to kill init error message at boot
I then boot the pc using the fallback image and copied the fallback config to /etc/mkinicpio.conf and ran mkinitcpio -p kernel26 and rebooted. everything works fine. but just running the command pacman -Syu and rebooting will end up with the same problem. though pacman -Syu does not install any updates. what is it that I'm doing wrong?
Thanks
