Intrusion and hard drive failure

We have a Xserve machine (G5) with OS X 10.3.9 installed, a couple of days ago the Intrusion Detection alarm was displayed in Server Monitor, it's in a secure room so I wasn't worried about that, but then yesterday I noticed the hard drive pre-failure warning was also given, hwmond.log has shown an increasing number of bad sectors on the hard drive. Also the fans seem to go into over drive on occasion lately (I'm rarely in the room so not sure if this is a common occurance). I figure we'll have to buy a replacement drive, but given the other problems I wanted to check if anyone has had similar problems and if so, if it's an indication of a further problem that could lead to the new drive being damaged as well.
The internal temperatures for the machine seems to be on par with the other machines that are on the same rack.
Thanks for your time and asistance

Greetings and welcome to the Apple boards.
Thanks
Sorry for the stupid question but did you physically check the server to make sure nobody attempted to take out one of the modules?
Do you mean the hard drive module? In any case, yes, I looked over the machine. My guess for the intrusion alarm, is just the sensor not making enough contact with the case (I couldn't find the sensor when I looked for it).
But even if someone had removed the drive, This would cause the pre-failure warnings, and the increasing bad sector counts would it?
My thought is that the two events are unrelated, but given all 3 issues popping up at once (and there was a power outage that seemed to knock out a power supply on a desktop machine that wasn't on a surge protector, but that was over a week ago) just wanted to see if anyone knew of any issues that could lead to damaging a brand new hard drive. The only way I can think of where they could be related is if something broke and caused a short out in the intrusion sensor, that also caused a surge into the hard drive. Unlikely I'm sure, but I've seen stranger.
Thanks for your response,
fiske

  • What's the Difference Between Logic Board Failure and Hard Drive Failure

    Hi!
So I wanted to know the difference between a Logic Board Failure and Hard Drive Failure because a couple of days ago I tried starting my computer up and I was welcomed by the Apple chime and a grey screen. I have been researching and most people say its either the hard drive or the logic board. So I am curious to know what are the symptoms of both. Thanks a lot, in advance!

The hard drive is where the OS resides, if it dies there is no OS loading, so you can't boot. If you hook up your external drive with your clone of the internal drive, boot up and hold down the option key, select your clone drive as the startup drive in boot manager that then appears, and the computer boots normally, then the computer is OK, it is just the internal drive that has gone south. You don't have a clone to boot from? Now you know why you should.
You could try booting from the DVD that came with the computer, hold down the "D" key to run diagnostics and see what the results are. If you can't boot into the diagnostics then a trip to the Apple store is probably in order.

  • M9500y performance degredation and hard drive failure ?

I have a m9500y that is reporting all sorts of performance boot issues in Vista. I do not know what to expect, read this post and let me know what you think.  TIA!
The new drive has been successfully restored and runs the O.S., I even have managed to do a few Windows Updates - HOWEVER, the machine is running not slow but more like 80286 slow.
Why? I have tried everything, from removing the extra peripherals from the motherboard and using only the HD to run the system. I have tried several BIOS setting changes.
I do wonder if it is possible that the restore DVD's that I used could have maybe not installed 100% effeciently!?
I have exchanged the RAM out and tested 2GB 4GB combos.
I have cleaned the CPU FAN/HEATSINK and replaced the silver compound just in case I had heat issues.  I cleaned the entire case and hardware has been removed and re-seated.
I have tried the old drive again only for it to boot up into the restore screen and give me error 1002.
I have done the BIOS update listed under the machine.
Has the SATA Controller failed on this MOBO? Is it possible that the hard drives are actually fine and the motherboard is causing the issue.
I have ordered yet another NEW hard drive that I will try - can I use a larger drive?

    Hi,
There are a number of posts on the forum where the HP recovery disks would end up with the 1002 error.  I suspect that the disks might be VISTA non-sp1 and perhaps with sp1 the issue would not occur.
You might consider using a Windows 7 installation disk and see how Windows 7 installs and performs.
Download the official Windows 7 ISO file. It’s about 123 MB.  Then burn it to disk using Imgburn.  You get a 30 day trial period which should be enough time to evaluate if your problem is hardware.

  • Installation And Hard Drive Failure

I just attempted to install Snow Leopard to my Macbook Pro, and now I am having serious issues. I put in the disc and went through all of the installation process. Snow Leopard begins to install, says that it will take about 45 minutes, and I go upstairs to get some food. After an hour or so, I come back down to find that the monitor of my Macbook Pro has gone black and there is no sounds activity coming from my computer, yet the light is on. I wasn't sure what to think of the situation, so I gave it another half hour. After that time, I come back to my computer to find the same thing. The computer sitting there with a black screen and no activity. I then proceed to hold down the power button to shut the machine down. Turn the machine back on only to find a blinking question mark folder on the screen. I try booting from the Lepoard disc, but I cannot seem to do that. Does anyone have any idea what in the world just happened?! I am freaking out and have a feeling that I just lost everything on my hard drive. Was this the fault of Snow Leopard?

I've had exactly the same problem.....
The install starts ok, then after about 10 minutes in everything seems to go to sleep.
I've had to reinstall Leopard but it's put all my apps etc into a previous system folder which no longer work. Luckily I backed up before I tried installing SN, but the backup won't restore until I've made space on the Hard Disk which means either dumping the previous system folder or finding 300GB of space somewhere else to copy it to. Dare I just dump it and trust the backup will work? or do I have to go out and buy another Hrd disk? (just to get back to a point where I was before I tried SN)
Curiosity didn't kill the Cat, it killed my Leopard

  • What if computer run into "Bootmgr is missing" or "Hard Drive Failure"

Most of us have the experience of computer run into error, such as bootmgr is missing. The most common reasons for BOOTMGR errors include corrupt and misconfigured files, hard drive and operating system upgrade issues, corrupt hard drive sectors, an outdated BIOS, and damaged or loose hard drive interface cables. Hard drive failure is another frequent error,it is arouse by physical damage or logical error. Once this problem occurs to you, any data stores in it would be in danger.  If you want to Fix Bootmgr Error by yourself. These following steps may be available for you to deal with the problem. Step one. Burn a rescue boot disc or USB drive. You need to download Fix Genius and install it  into a computer ,then insert the CD/USB and run the program to burn it . Step two. boot your computer from CD/USB Enter into the BIOS and change the Boot Device Priority ,then save the changes and exit. Step three.Fix "Bootmgr is missing" or "Hard Drive Failure" Insert the CD/USB then you will enter into the WinPE system, and click the Fix Genius icon there on the desktop. After run up the program, config the parameter according to your problem. This rescuing process would last within minutes. It is the best one I can find among the solutions. As the time past, it is a time information refresh very quickly, Maybe there is a better one for you to fix bootmgr is corrupted and Hard drive failure if you have time to search online. please let me know if you find it, I will be glad with you.

There are some caveats to be aware of when replacing the hard drive! While in theory any SATA drive is compatible, I have experienced problems with a Seagate Momentus 5400.6 500GB and a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 640GB recently.
With my WD drive I have had to adjust the power management settings (using a command line tool called "hdapm") to prevent it from spinning up and down every 20 to 30 seconds, and which was also leading to momentary freeze ups. While this may kill my battery a bit quicker, I'm hoping the drive will at least live an average lifetime. (Batteries may be more expensive, but they're a lot quicker to replace than a hard drive).
My Seagate drive has exhibited far less frequent problems but the occasional noises it made have never sounded healthy and after 6 months is now being replaced under warranty. There were also a number of days where I would get excessive beachballing for no reason I could identify, and that I concluded must be hard disk related. I couldn't find anything here or elsewhere on the internet to indicate what the cause of that might be.
So my limited experience of hard disk replacement hasn't been a great success and I'm beginning to wonder if getting an official replacement from Apple might be a safer option in the long run, despite it being more expensive. I read somewhere that the hard disks supplied by Apple have custom firmware that works better with Apple's own power management strategies.

  • Trying to restore my Mac OS  after a hard drive failure and my password is no longer recognized, however I can log in by double clicking on the Lion Icon? How can I reset my password

I am trying to restore my Mac OS after a hard drive failure and my password is no longer recognized, however I can log in by double clicking on the Lion Icon? How can I reset my password

First, make sure caps lock is not on.
Another reason why your password might not be recognized is that the keyboard layout (input source) has been switched without your realizing it. At the login screen, you can cycle through the available layouts by pressing the key combinationcommand-space or command-option-space. See this support article.
If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know the Apple ID password, then maybe the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
Otherwise*, boot into Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. In the window that opens, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window opens. Close the Terminal window to get it out of the way.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but your Keychain will be reset (empty.) If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it.
*Note: If you've activated FileVault, this procedure doesn't apply. Follow instead these instructions.

  • HP Pavillion DV7 Hard Drive failure and replacement

    Hi all,
As the title mentions, I have an HP Pavillion DV7, p/n: NB406AV. The SMART is showing an imminent hard drive failure. The primary hard disk quick test stops at 4% and shows a code "303" for hard disk 1. It also stops at 4% when doing a full HD scan.
So, I'll be replacing the HD. I have no idea what to buy, and I plan on buying a non HP HD. Can anyone tell me the specs I should look for? I'd like to get the biggest GB HD that will be compatible as well. Thanks for your help!

    Hi,
It usesSATA HDD. Some dv7 models use SATA II but many later models use SATA III. SATA III is backwrd compatible but more expensive. DV7 is a series of hundreds different models and you won't go wrong with SATA III drive. It can accept current generation HDD's. The following HHD is a good choice with a good price/performance ratio per Gb:
       http://www.seagate.com/au/en/internal-hard-drives/laptop-hard-drives/laptop-solid-state-hybrid-drive...
You can use 1Tb on your machine. New HDD's are thinner but the screws will be lined up and should be strong enough to hold the HDD in place.
    Regards.

  • Hard drive failure - options for data recovery and AppleCare coverage

I have been handed a relative's 12 month old MacBook Pro with a factory-installed 500GB hard drive which appears to have failed. When attempting to boot the MacBook I am met with the classic clicking and grating noise which I know is a tell-tale sign of hard drive failure. The drive will not boot and I am shown the question mark folder icon, indicating that the operating system cannot be found. Have booted into internet recovery mode, Disk Utility appears to have found no sign of the hard drive's existence and shows none of its partitions. I have attempted putting the MacBook into FW target-mode and mounting the disk from another laptop, but to no avail; while it will go into target mode the drive simply isn't visible. The SATA connection to the drive is definitely OK - I have tested with another 2.5 inch hard drive which showed up fine in Disk Utility and was bootable. Have run Apple Hardware Test/Diagnostics but this returned no errors. It seems like a pretty clear cut case of drive failure.
I put this all to the relative whose laptop this is and asked them whether the MacBook had been dropped recently, explaining to them that this is one of the likeliest causes for such sudden failure. Sheepishly they admitted that they had indeed dropped it, although not from too great a distance and onto a carpeted floor. Apparently in the days immediately after the shock the hard drive continued to boot but the system was very slow and beset by spinning beech ball hangups. It is only in the last few days that the hard drive has become completely unbootable, and seemingly unreachable.
I have two questions that I would be grateful for some help with.
Firstly, is there any possibility of recovering data from this drive without going to a data recovery specialist? The user did have backups of most important data, but some recently imported photos were not backed up. Is it any use me trying any third-party data recovery software utilities, bearing in mind that I can't even mount the drive in target mode?
Second, the MacBook is still covered by the extended AppleCare warranty for the next two years. Is it worth my relative's while making a Genius Bar appointment to see whether Apple would replace this drive for free, given that the damage was most likely user-inflicted? Is there any chance that this sudden failure could be unrelated to the drop the MacBook suffered the other day - perhaps just a result of the 'normal' failure rate? I am more than happy to exchange the drive for a new one myself and my relative is happy to pay for the new part (I was amazed at how cheap hard drives are now), but would we be better off trying an Apple Store? My prediction would be that while we might get lucky and have an obliging genius who agrees to swap the drive without asking too many questions, we could also have one who concludes the damage is not covered by the warranty and insists on charging for the new hard drive (at a mark-up I assume) and labour.
Any thoughts about these two issues or the hard drive failure more generally are very welcome. Thanks.

1, Data recovery software is your only alternative if there is no backup. It may or may not be able to revoker anything from that hard drive. If it does then the only other choice is to go to a data recovery service. If have to go that route expect to pay for it, like $$$$.
2, Yes. They will at least tell him what the problem is and the cost if any to fix. There is a good chance they will fix it for nothing and only charge for data recovery if they can do it.

  • I had a hard drive failure on my iMac.  I can restore my music, tv shows, and apps from the iTunes store.  How do I restore my movies?

We came back from vacation to find our iMac not working.  Turns out I had a hard drive failure due to an invalid node structure?  They could not recover anything.  I can restore our music, apps, and tv shows from iTunes.  Anyone know how to restore the movies we purchased from iTunes?

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.  Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reaosn you have failed to backup, then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod.  File>Transfer Purchases

    Thanks for your response.
I had tried COMMAND+ALT+R which led me to directly to INTERNET RECOVERY via wifi. After 1 hour or so it dropped me at the same point.

    so what to do now?
P.S. Guys at MacStore were so careless to even listen to me when I asked them about retrieving back up :(

  • How do I uninstall and reinstall CS3 after hard drive failure?

Hi.  I suffered a recent hard drive failure on a Mac Pro.  I didn't have a backup, like a dummy.  The hard drive fails to boot so I installed OS on new blank hard drive and attempted to drag over whatever I could see and find from old drive onto the new one.  I tried to start CS3 after doing this but it gives me an error: "LIcensing for this product has stopped working.  You cannot use this product at this time.  You must repair problem by uninstalling and reinstalling this product or contact IT Admin or Adobe Customer support"  When I go to Utilities to find uninstall for Adobe the file is not there.  WHen I try to reinstall from disk it says "setup error; setup has encountered an error and cannot continue. COntact Adobe Customer service support for assistance".  I contacted them via chat and they told me they cannot help me and to post this issue here.  Is there a way to resolve this?  Am I just missing a file or something that will resolve the issue?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

You can't install applications like that. Use the original disks to

Hello, I am having a macbook air early 2008 and it is having a hard drive failure i need to replace the hard drive is it possible ? the hard drive number is HS082HB could you please help !!

You can replace it with a solid state drive, see the one OWC sells here.  The video on how to install it is here.
iFixit.com has used hard drives available here.
If it were me, I'd go with a solid state drive, as the prices have come down recently and the performance improvement is noticeable.

  • I recently had a catastrophic hard drive failure and had to replace it.  At the time, I had a VERY extensive music library and it is now lost. This entire library was also on iTunes. Is it possible to recover that library, or do I have to download again?

If your hard drive was not backed up then you can download items purchased from the iTunes Store.
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519 - enabled with iTunes 10.3 and newer; not available in all countries; apps, books (not audiobooks), music, t.v. shows, and movies (some - not all studios have permitted this). Movies currently available in the USA only. Downloading previously purchased movies and TV shows requires iTunes 10.6 or later.  Discontinued items not available. For items not included in the iCloud list, or locations or computer systems where iCloud is not (yet?) available, you only get one download per fee paid.  Apple notes it is your responsibility to back up your purchases.
Did you subscribe to iTunes Match service?  If you did, your other music would be available too.
Note, this restores the music files themselves, not playlists, playcount, ratings, or other things associated with the actual library file structure.
You really should consider getting a backup drive. Hard drives failures are a certainty and it saves a lot of grief.
