Invalid Catalog btree depth information (4,1)

What does this mean on my MacBookPro? Why can I no longer run Drive Genius to defrag the hard drive.
Is my hard drive getting ready to fail or is this a leopard issue?

Hi Vis,
I've done a bit of searching on your situation. It turns out that other people are complaining that this error appears after using Drive Genius to defragment a hard disk on a Macintosh. See this link:
http://lovemac.org/2006/11/15/did-drive-genius-corrupt-my-drive/
The best thing for you to do at this point is to use an application called DiskWarrior to verify and rebuild your drive's filesystem. You need to download the appropriate version of DiskWarrior, depending on whether you use Tiger or Leopard. DiskWarrior is a much more robust disk verification and repair tool than the one that's in Disk Utility.
And again, I would urge you to stop defragmenting your drive. As I said, unless you work with very large files on a routine basis, you're not gaining anything from defragmentation. Period. If you choose to ignore that and continue on the assumption that defragmentation is necessary, all you're doing is exposing yourself and your hard disk to extra, unnecessary risk.
If you'd like confirmation from some other long-time Mac users, feel free to ask a question about defragmentation in the general OS X discussion forum. Alternately, see the following knowledge base article:

  • Occasional Kernel Panic and "invalid catalog btree depth info (4.1)"

My Mac is 6 years old, and is functioning OK in general. Occasionally in the morning I find my Mac making a loud noise coming from the fan, blank screen, and as told, it's one of those Kernel Panic crashes where I have to press the power button to shut down, wait 5-10 minutes and power up again to have my Mac get back to normal.
This has happened 3-4 times in the past couple months. Only one time it happened in front of my eyes, while surfing the net, when I suddenly watched the gray curtain coming down with a message to shut down and restart. Again, once I restart -- all is back to normal again...
This morning it happened again, which was disturbing, since just last night I performed my weekly Cocktail run.... This time I decided to do a few tests. I started up from the install CD, run Disk Utility -- all was OK.
I have an external drive, which is my back up and my HD's MIRROR (runs every Saturday morning, using Tri-Backup). So I restarted from that ext. drive, launched Drive Genius 2 to test my HD: ran the Repair utility > Verify --- and it FAILED ("invalid catalog btree depth info (4.1)"), as was the case with REPAIR or REBUILD, all failed.
When rebooting again from my internal HD, launching Drive Genius again, this time testing my ext., MIRRORED drive --- verification was successful.
The only difference between the 2 drives is, my internal drive is S.M.A.R.T-supported, while my ext. is not, if that makes any significance...
One more note:  For years now, any attempt to launch Disk Warrior (4.1) has failed.... It just would never complete the launching process (=crash)....
.......OK, that's my story, let's see how good you guys are.........
    Thanks!

Excuse my ignorance.... I have Console running, and I had launched DW. It crashed, as expected.
NOW:  where in Console do I go to get the information that would help figuring why DW has crashed, which of the logs should I select?
Under Logs > CrashReporter I have DiskWarrior.crash.log --- I see a report dated back 2006 (and of an older version of DW), full of "stuff".... I used the CLEAR button, everything was deleted, and today's date showed up on the top, but no report is showing up... Even after I Forced-Quit DW, no report is showing.
When I clicked on another log, and then came back to DW's crash.log -- the same old report from 2006 shows up again...
So clearly this NEW report I should look elsewhere...
    ---------- EDIT:  Go to console.log?

  • Invalid catalog btree

I tried to fix the problem with 'drive genius' and 'disk warrior' - without success. Is there an other possibility?

the OP could also start in "safe mode"
I don't believe so as the Repair Disk functionality in DU needs to be able to unmount the target disk to make the repairs. Something it cannot do if the problem drive is also used as a startup drive.
run disk utility from the DVD
While true it is always best, as far as I'm concerned at least, to try such repairs from a startup drive/DVD/etc that is the same version as the one you are trying to repair. Any differences in DU between version (even for instance between 10.4.1 and 10.4.2) can make all of the difference when it comes to a good result. Unless the OP has a 10.4.2 DVD then this is not possible with a DVD startup. While it probably does not make a difference any added advantage it worth the it.
or fsck from single user mode
Again, if the repair requires that the problematic drive be unmounted then this won't be able to fix things either.
But if Drive Genius and DW couldn't repair what makes you think DU will?
Because you just never know. Having had experience with Disk First Aid under Mac OS 9 (and earlier) you learn to find that even though other products may seem to be more advanced the simplest tool is the only one that works.

  • Invalid catalog

I have a catalog that Lightroom is unable to open, saying it is an "invalid" catalog.  I used it recently now I'm unable to access.  Is there a way around this?

    D_Dye,
Please try to check the location where the catalog is saved for .lock file .
Remove the .lock file and open the catalog and it should work.

  • Invalid Oracle HTTP Server information

I am having problems with the Design Repository Report in Warehouse Builder Browser. When I try to logon I receive the message: Invalid Oracle HTTP Server information. This is the same database server that the client uses to logon to the repository. I can logon to the HTTP Server using a browser with the same host and port information. I set up the DAD with Mod plsql Configuration Menu using this information. What do I need to change?
    OWB Client 9.0.3.33.0
    OWB Repository 9.0.3.0.1

Did you already do this: Project menu -> Preferences -> Browser tab, set the HTTP Server port for the first option.
It's hard to make a mistake in setting the DAD, but just in case take a look at the instructions in the Hands-on Demo document, Prerequisites section, step 8. The Hands-on Demo is linked from Self-Service Education http://otn.oracle.com/products/warehouse/selfserv_edu/installation.html

  • Invalid catalog metadata

    Hi,
I have build an OLAP Catalog and I'm trying to access it from a BI Beans project. The connection (with the database) was successful, but there was an error: BIB10701 (error conecting metadata).
But my OLAP Catalog is valid. I validated it using the following procedures:
    cwm2_olap_validate.Validate_Dimension
    cwm2_olap_validate.Validate_Cube
I can view the entity objects created using the "all_olap2" procedures:
    select * from ALL_OLAP2_DIMENSIONS order by DIMENSION_NAME
    select * from ALL_OLAP2_CUBES order by CUBE_NAME
    select * from ALL_OLAP2_CATALOGS
    and so on.
    What is happening?

  • In depth information re adapting older lenses to current EOS cameras.

Since this forum first became public one very common question is whether the older lenses we still own from the film days will work on the new Canon DSLR many are considering buying. Like many things there are ways to use them but not necessarily as well as hoped for when trying to move to one of Canon DSLR's in your budget. This link is to a very good thread at another forum I've been a member at for some time & which has a lot of members exploring just about every possible avenue of photography. It's still a work in progress so there will be more info added as time passes but it's a very good start at helping point out what you need to know in your decision making re using older FD lenses with the EF / EF-S mount.

  • Fatal Disk Error via Drive Genius

Hi all. My computer was/is running very slow while booting and shutting down. The booting up process is only completed when I open one of the items in the dock. I decided to run Drive Genius. I ran the Defrag and got this message:
"Verify Failed. invalid catalog btree depth info (4.1)"
It suggested I repair it. When I run the repair function of Disc Warrior it says "Fatal Disc Error".
Naturally I ran time machine and backed up the entire drive. I'm assuming the drive is on it's last legs and beyond repair? Any suggestions on how to remedy this? I'm thinking I have to buy a new drive and install Leopard on it and transfer everything on the faulty drive to a new one. Any help would be appreciated.

First I'd suggest you try erasing the drive. It's possible it's just a disk catalog corruption that's no repairable but that could be corrected via a reformat. If the reformat fails, then it's likely that the disk is indeed failing and may need to be replaced.
Whichever route you have to do, if you have a successful backup of the full drive, you should be able to just boot from the Leopard installation disk and select the "Restore from Time Machine" option (it may not be phrased exactly that way) and get the entire system back.
BTW, your user name here doesn't exactly inspire folks to feel really enthusiastic about helping you.

  • RMAN catalog fails to show target database information when in nomount mode

Hello everyone, I am trying to restore a dev. database from its own backup taken a week back. The DB is in noarchivelog mode and recently 2 of the datafiles were removed from the files system and thus the need to restore the DB from its backup. However rest of the files and control files are intact.
    Now, when I put the database in mount mode and connect to the catalog then I can see the DB's incarnation;

    However I am not able to see DB incarnation in the RMAN catalog if I put the DB in nomount mode (which is required to recover DB);
    :->rman catalog cde01_rman4/xxxxxx@prman10g target /

    Hi,
You won't be able to see incarnation information when the DB is in "nomount" since the incarnation is written in the control file. I don't think the catalog has this information.
Anyway, in order to restore datafiles, the instance must be mounted, so you should be OK.
Mount the instance and just restore the datafiles.

  • Premier Elements 13 on MAC. trying to use motion tracking. immediately get error "the media file seems to have an invalid entry in the catalog. Please rename it for use."

Anyone resolved this issue?  What is the "catalog".  All I did was import a file (1080/60) and get started.  Everything else seems to work fine.

Assuming you're not shooting in 3D mode, I'm not sure why this is happening.
As long as you're not shooting in 3D mode, this is a standard AVCHD camcorder, which I've done lots of motion tracking with.
Since you manually copied the file from SD card rather than getting the media using Premiere Elements' tools, it is quite possible you grabbed the wrong file. Try this: Plug your camcorder (with SD card in the cam) into your computer via USB and set the camcorder to VTR/play. Then go to Premiere Elements' Add Media/From Flip or Camera and use that tool to get the video from the camera to your computer.
This should resolve your invalid catalog entry issue.

  • Feature Request: Ability to easily view bit depth

I have recently downloaded LR3 for evaluation.
My photo catalog consists of JPEGs, 8 bit TIFs, 16 bit TIFs and RAW files.
There does not seem to be an easy way to display bit depth information in LR3.
To get the bit depth, when working on TIF files, it seems the file has to be either opened in Photoshop/Photoshop Elements or Windows Explorer Properties.
Could this feature be added to LR?

    Hi, Rob,
Use the «value» property of viewFactory:tab_view() with data from «identifier» from nesting viewFactory:tab_view_item(). I just tried this and it works well. You can bind this value directly to entry in preferences table, and the tab selection will be restored at each run.
