Invalid Directory in mail account configuration

In Mac Mail, I have 4 accounts configured.  One each from Yahoo, MSN, Comcast and Mobile Me.  In the advanced tab of accounts, there is the box that you can uncheck to leave a copy of incoming mail on the server.  But when I try to do that with the Comcast account, I get -------------
"Invalid Directory", and then an error blurb that says the path is laready in use by the Yahoo account.  The settings for the Yahoo account show that it is using a yahoo server for the outgoing mail.  I also have no problem with that setting in the other two accounts---only the Comcast one.
What am I missing?

sorted.!

how can I edit external e-mails accounts configurations I had on Mobile Me mail and now are
    on iCloud?

Thanks for the answer, but the external POP accounts I had in my MobileMe are working in my iCloud! I receive all the e-mails that are directed to those POP accounts, in my iCloud e-mail, since I migrated from Mobileme to iCloud. So, iCloud accepts external accounts, but i doesn't allow us to edit new configurations or to send e-mails using Pop Accounts through it. Very weird. Does anybody have a solution?

  • Unable to set default mail account in iOS

I'm unable to choose my default mail account. I have two IMAP mail accounts configured. One of the two accounts was imported using a configuration profile supplied by the mail service provider. This worked well, except that iOS doesn't seem to recognise it for the purpose of defining a default mail account. I added a third mail account and now the default account option is displayed in Settings, but the drop-down list only shows two accounts, not the one imported via the configuration profile. Is this a bug?

Resetting the phone does not delete anything from the phone.  Explain what you mean by "reset."  Are you asking or telling us you can't reinstall mail accounts.  What EXACTLY did you do?

  • Is it possible to have different mail icons for different mail accounts?

I have several mail accounts configured in my iPhone 5s, and I want to see them separately and know when i have unread mails in each account, without having to enter in mail app.
    Thanks

No, all unread email is consolidated under the single icon for the Mail Appl.
You could use several different mail apps (one for each account). This would show you the unread emails for each account with a seperate icon. Chech the App Store for many more email Apps.

  • Delete Yahoo mail account on iphone

On my iphone, in the settings of "Mail, Contacts, Calendars", I have a Yahoo mail account configured. If I delete this Yahoo mail account on my iphone, will my original Yahoo mail account on Yahoo mail server get deleted together?

Bruce, I recommended for you to do that in my last post to you so you could fix your email problem. This WILL NOT delete your yahoo account from anywhere but your phone. Re-enter it after you have done so and you will start getting and being able to send your e-mails again.

  • Mail Account Available To All Users

The family iMac with Snow Leopard 10.6.2, I configured Mail with my mobileme account. Every user that logs in has my mail account configured when they log in automatically. How can I stop this from happening.
    Thanks

    Hi baltwo,
I have created standard accounts for other members/users. Auto login is off. When I remove my mail account from the application, it shows up again.
Well, I finally figured it out. The problem came from and originated with my MobileMe account. It was logged in under the MobileMe setting in Preferences. Once I logged out, that took care of it.
    Thanks

When trying to update my Mail Account Mailbox Behaviours settings, after making the changes when I try to close the settings pane the following messages occur: Invalid Incoming Mail Server The “Incoming Mail Server” field cannot be empty. The incoming mail server box has in light grey colour: p02-imap.mail.me.com in it and I cannot edit its content. Any ideas what is going on and how to fix it?

    Hi all,
Mattreichenbach is probably on the right track here with a reset of settings.  I think I've determined the issue has to do with cached account information and inconsistencies for the account name.  This seems to crop up when I've changed my password and it hasn't propagated fully to all the servers, devices, certificates, etc.
Hopefully many here are on their way to restoration of service by now but it's clear that a lot of people are having the same issues.  Very frustrating and definitely something Apple needs to resolve:  incoming mail server field grayed out, incorrect autopopulation of different fields, other unanticipated behaviors.  If you're still having issues, though, here's what worked for me...
First, head to the iCloud preferences pane in System Configuration and choose "Sign Out".  When I did this it prompted me with a number of "are you sure" type questions about retaining information on my local machine.  I chose to delete/remove the info each time simply because it should all be restored by the cloud and I didn't want to risk a massive duplication of my data... I will say, I'm back up and running with no issues so I suspect you can make the same delete/remove choices...  But use your own judgment.  I don't want you to lose any data (ie.. please use care as you do this because I cannot bear the thought of causing anyone to experience the pain of data loss).
Once you've signed out of iCloud, restart your system.  When you get back in, head to the Mail, Contacts and Calendars section of your System Preferences and add your account back by choosing the brushed aluminum "iCloud" button.  When it asks for your account name, use your @iCloud.com email address.  I am all but certain my issue had started because one of my devices (iPhone or whatever) had been set up with an email alias specified instead of my @iCloud.com address.
Apple, if you're reading through any of these issues (there are TONS of users having this same problem).  Take note, that your icloud service somewhat frequently is not responding and yet tells the user that the password is wrong and this prompts people to be changing their passwords unnecessarily.  This has happened to me on numerous occasions.  Also, I noticed that last week's outage corresponded to a VERY similar outage exactly one year ago to the day.  Sounds like planned maintenance to me and I think you could do a better job notifying folks so we're not wasting HUGE amounts of time troubleshooting a problem that we have no hope of fixing.
Hope that helps some of you!

  • New open directory account doesn't create mail account

    Hi All
I have a Mac Mini with lion server, Fresh out of the box i messed with it a few times to learn and then i did a clean (internet) install and started with the settings i wanted (hostname, etc) with no mistakes. (It seems Lion doesn't like applhying most changes)
When i set it up i created one local admin user that won't be in the open directory.
Anyway, I've set up the following :
    * Address Book
    * File Sharing
    * iCal
    * Mail
    * Profile Manager
    * and VPN
The first open directory user i added was myself and that user managed to get assigned an email account.
Susiquent users i've added have not been registered with the mail subsystem.
I've checked this using the "Server Admin" additional download management tool. (Mail service on the left, Maintenance up the top and then accounts uder that)
There is only one mail account and thats the first one i've added.
I havn't played with the settings so other than switching things on it should "just work" but it doesn't.
I've prevously setup vmail servers using mysql to store the accounts with postfix and courioer imap but that was in some ways simpler as nothing was under the covers. I havn't dug too much into the dovecot config files, etc as i believe there is an all knowing server configuration engine at work here that isn't doing its job (which i havn't dug into)
Has anyone had this issue of the mail accounts not being created?
Or can anyone point me to a fix?

It seems to have something to do with profile manager.
I get stack traces in the "system messages" logs for the "Server" application, grrrr.
I'll get that info and attempt to submit a but report tonight.

  • "Invalid directory" message in Mail

Mail stopped working for me recently so I tried everything I could think of to get it to re-recognize my account.
Out of desperation, I disabled that mail account, and created another thinking that something in the preferences was hosed. I have 4 other old, and no longer used mail accounts that have also been disabled.
My problem now is that I cannot get either the old, or the new mail account to work, as it appears they are in conflict with each other.
When I try to enable either account, I get the message...
    "Invalid directory"
"the account path, Users/me/Library/Mail/Mac-<my account name> is already being used by the account ".Mac Account"."
Is there some way that I can edit the account information to blow away the old inactive accounts (all of them), as well as the hosed active accounts and start fresh?
I REALLY don't want to have to continue to use the (SLOW) webmail beta.

Do you want to delete the accounts & all Mail they have, instead of the Disable account?
Mail>Preferences>Accounts, highlight one & click the little minus icon below.
Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.
If that doesn't help & you can afford to redo any Mail Rules...

  • Unable to add a mail account, with Invalid Password error message, yet can log into mail system OK through a browser. Mail technicians can't find the problem.

When I try to add a newly-created Bigpond account to Thunderbird, I get an error message "User Name or Password Invalid", yet I can log in to this account OK through a browser. When adding the account, Thunderbird says "Configuration found in Mozilla ISP database". I have previously successfully added Bigpond, Yahoo, Outlook and Hotmail accounts to Thunderbird and they are working fine. The Bigpond Technical Support staff have looked into this and cannot see what is wrong but they say they do not support Thunderbird. Any ideas appreciated...

Thanks. I had tried the auto and manual setups with the same result. IN addition, the Bigpond Support sent me the following which I also tried and got the same result.
For the settings that needs to be configured for your new mailbox, kindly follow the steps listed below:
(**Note: Please be advised that BigPond technical support team is only trained for Microsoft mail clients like Outlook Express, windows Live mail and the like. Having said this, we can only provide limited assistance in setting up your email account for your Thunderbird mail client by providing the correct settings that need to be configured.)
    For IMAP server settings:
    Account Type: IMAP
    Incoming IMAP server: imap-mail.outlook.com
    Incoming IMAP mail: port 993
    Outgoing SMTP server: smtp-mail.outlook.com
Outgoing SMTP port: 587 (with TLS [preferred] or SSL Encryption depending on your e mail app)
Incoming uses SSL: On (this is required)
Outgoing uses SSL: On (this is required) (with TLS [preferred] or SSL Encryption depending on your e mail app)
Authentication Outgoing server (SMTP) authentication: Same as incoming mail server
    For POP server settings:
Please be advised that before setting up your email account on an email client using a POP mail server, we will need to ensure first that 'Connecting devices and apps with POP' has been enabled through webmail. For instructions on how to do this, kindly follow the steps below:
    - Log In your email account from the BigPond website from the Webmail section located at the top left side of the BigPond home page (http://media.telstra.com.au/home.html).
    - The page then will automatically redirect to an Outlook website in which you will need to click the 'settings icon' (a gear like icon) located at the top left side of the page.
    - From the drop down list, click on 'Options'.
    - It will then direct the page to a new page where you will need to click 'Connect devices and apps with POP' under the Managing your account section.
    - Choose 'Enable' and choose "Do what the device or app says—if it's set to delete messages, delete them." under Deleting downloaded messages.
    - Click on the 'Save' button to save the changes.
    - Log out of from your webmail page and start setting up your email client on your mail client using the following setting below:
    Account Type: POP3
    Incoming POP server: pop-mail.outlook.com
    Incoming POP mail: port 995
    Outgoing SMTP server: smtp-mail.outlook.com
Outgoing SMTP port: 587 (with TLS [preferred] or SSL Encryption depending on your e mail app)
Incoming uses SSL: On (this is required)
Outgoing uses SSL: On (this is required) (with TLS [preferred] or SSL Encryption depending on your e mail app)
Authentication Outgoing server (SMTP) authentication: Same as incoming mail server
In looking at the Thunderbird error message, it seems to consistently refer to the User Name and Password. I know they are correct, as I can log in from a browser using them. Is there something in the validation rules that might be the problem? Also, you may be aware that Bigpond is migrating their old Webmail system across to the Outlook platform. Registering new e-mail accounts in Bigpond get created on the Outlook platform, whereas older accounts are still on the Bigpond Webmail system. Is this causing a problem somewhere in validation?

  • "invalid directory" prevents second email account

My Problem:Since dumping the preferences for Mail and reinstalling my main Mail account I have been unable to enter an extra mail account. Every time I try to save the changes I get a message box: INVALID DIRECTORY THE ACCOUNT PATH BLAH BLAH IS ALREADY BEING USED BY THE ACCOUNT(my usual email address) I have checked and rechecked that my main (and working fine) account is set up correctly. Perhaps one way of solving this would be to update my copy of Mail. It is 1.3.11 (v622/624) dated 2003. I am running X3.9 I have not been able to find how to download a more up to date version of Mail. Any clues? Would that in fact be likely to fix this silly little problem? My thanks to those of you there who put your time into helping dodos like me.

I also tried deleting TB altogether and reinstalled trying the problem gmail account and it still didn't work.
While checking on the 2-factor authentication, which I don't use, i noticed something. The working gmail account allowed 'access for less secure apps' and my problem account didn't. I enabled that and was able to add it to TB. All works now!
Not sure if the less secure apps is a good thing, but its working.
    Thanks Christ1

  • Mail account directory conflict

I have set up an account and it assigned an account directory in my home account ~/Library/Mail. I want to set up a similar account with the same user name and POP server. Mail won't let me because of the resulting conflict in the automatically named directory that results from these choices.
I would like to manually specify the mail directory for either the existing or the new account to eliminate this conflict. Is there a way?

    You're welcome.
Quit Mail and make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder first, just in case something goes wrong while trying to fix the problem.
What I would do is change the incoming mail server of the current account back to what it was (i.e. the anti-spam service), then create a new account for your domain host, which is what you should have done in the first place.
Before actually making the changes, you should go to Preferences > Accounts > Advanced and click Remove now. This would accomplish two things: (1) avoid messages already downloaded to be re-downloaded when setting up the account again, and (2) reset the file that Mail uses to keep track of which messages have already been downloaded and whose data would be invalid after changing the account's incoming mail server.
Ask for any clarifications or if you need further assistance.

  • ERROR: Cannot start mail services, configuration directory does not exist

I'm running an Xserve G5 with one internal boot drive and one RAID using the other two internal drives. I used Apple's Disk Utility to set-up the RAID.
Back in early December, I moved my mail database and mail store to the RAID. Ever since, when I restart the server, the mailaccess.log generates the following error:
Jan 23 18:51:33 mail master[47]: ERROR: Cannot start mail services, configuration directory does not exist: /Volumes/RAID/mail.data/db
I'm speculating this is a timing error that gets created when Postfix initially can't find the RAID. Then, it must try again and find it because the error message does not repeat and mail starts running.
Is this something to worry about?

    Hi Joel,
You're right, it's a timing issues. The mail system is ready for work before the file system is mounted. It's benign.

I have several users in an exchange environment who cannot email a photo from the iPhone.  When the click on Email Photo, they are prompted to configure a mail account even though there is already an exchange account in place.  How do I remediate this?  Not all of the users in our environment have this issue.  If the users having this issue, install a secondary email account, Gmail, Hotmail, etc, then they can send through those accounts.  Why would the exchange account not be seen to send photos?

Sounds like it worked until the policies associated with the account that are creating the problem were fully pushed down.
Try setting up a new (test) Exhange account and see if it behaves the same way on the phone (after removing the problem account from the phone, of course).
