Invalid Key after 'out-of-box' recovery. (Satellite A215)

I did a out-of-box recovery with the recovery disc's. It goes through the full process but when you click on 'admin' to start the computer, it asks for a product key. I've entered the on off the computer, but say's invalid. Any ideas why this is happening. I've redone the recovery three times with all the same outcome.

In the Device Manager, these items are listed with a yellow question mark. Base System Devices (x3) Ethernet Controller PCI Device RTL8187B_WLAN_Adapter SM Bus Controller Video Controller (VGA Compatible)
No surprise there. You need to install the correct drivers and utilities for Windows XP.
The site for that model does not have them all (the chipset and display software, in particular). Best to get those for the European models in the same part number family (PSAFGx).
Go to the European download site and select Satellite A210 with Short Model No. PSAFGE. I don't see anything there you wouldn't want to install.
But the order of installation matters. It's important to install the AMD Processor driver and the ATI display driver prior to any other driver. Install the Common Module before any other Toshiba utilities.

  • Out of Box Recovery doesn't match out of box state

I am working to get my mom's Satellite A660 back up and running. I helped her buy it from Toshiba Direct last year and I chose the customization options because she doesn't like dealing with technology. I know that I chose the installed operating system to be Windows 7 Professional, and that matches the Windows sticker on the bottom of the laptop. We also chose to have it shipped with Office 2010 included.
Three days ago things went downhill for her system and it started running extremely slow, being glitchy, and windows explorer kept crashing. At some points it wouldn't get past the "Starting Windows" screen. After running the System Repair options, Windows troubleshooting options, and antivirus scans and not getting results, I decided that using the Toshiba recovery options would be best.
Not only was the recovery glitchy (it would have an error and have to shutdown and restart) but when all the recovery was complete, the "Out of Box" factory settings and system are NOT the same as when we first opened it from the box. The biggest descrepancy is that Windows 7 is no longer the Professional version but it is now Home Premium. Also, I notice that when I view the available drives in Windows explorer, the recovery partition that was listed is now gone. This would be irritating but acceptable, however, the computer is now just as clunky and glitchy but in different ways.
I'm actually on a different computer to write this because Firefox keeps not responding, Windows Update is not downloading any updates, and the computer is extremely slow. Does anybody know anything about this scenario? I am extremely disappointed with the recovery process, my mom needs her laptop for school, and I am trying to solve this for her before she really loses it!
How can I get the correct Out of Box recovery?? Why doesn't the OS match what truly came to us in the first place? Will this create licensing issues? Most importantly, how can I get the computer into a fresh, non-problematic state??
    Thanks in advance.

If it's still under warranty, send it back. That would be my first option. I wouldn't be surprised if they put in the wrong OS in the recovery partition. It's typical copy and paste from their typical best selling system is what you have. You can always call their 800 number and see if they will support you even if it's not under warranty.
Toshiba is making a lot of junk lately. I've owned 3 Toshibas prior to acquiring my latest POS last year.

  • Re: Out-of-box recovery

    Hi,
I uninstalled Realtek Ethernet controller driver and then accidentally installed the Realtek all-in-one Windows driver but it wouldn't do the same thing as the other one.
I then tried to uninstall it but it wouldn't let me so I tried to do the out-of-box recovery. It says to hold 0 (zero) down and press the power button so that's what I did and it just froze on the page with the red 'TOSHIBA' on even though the manual said it should come up with a warning page.
I am not an expert at computers and am very stuck on what to do because I have to use the Ethernet cable whenever I want to connect to the internet.
If someone can help then I would be very grateful. :)

    Hello
If you check Users Manuals document on page 80 you will notice that there is no word about pressing zero at start up.
HDD recovery installation works as described on http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD1303440001R01.htm or using recovery USB stick if you have created one.

' To run this application, you first must install one of the following version of the .NET Framework: v2.0.50727
Conatct your application publisher for instructions about obtaining the appropriate version of .NET Framework'
After clicking OK on the error window desktop loaded with classic theme and explorer.exe was not working.. i am unable to open My computer, there is no IE, on the bottom of the desktop it was written as the copy of windows is not genuine.
Operationg system is windows 7 Home premium
I have restored my laptop to out-of-box 6 months before i did not face any issues.
Please Please some body suggest me !!!

Have you tried to restore it again since then? It sounds like something went wrong during the installation and not all of the required files were installed correctly. If that doesn't work, you may want to contact HP and have them send you the recovery discs.

  • SYSTEM RECOVERY: SATELLITE A215- S7416

I have a Laptop Model # PSAFGU-02K001 & am planning on performing a hard drive recovery to out-of-box state.  It is a Windows Vista Operating System.  I know basically how to boot up computer using the factory recovery discs.  I am going to make a back-up right before I perform the recovery using CD-RW discs.  My questions are what would I need to copy or write down?  What exactly will be erased on the hard drive?  What else should I do before trying to perform the recovery?

I haven't test these old links to see whether they work.

  • Cannot connect to college network after installing Vista business on Satellite A215

I have a Satellite A215-S4757, which i brought with me to college, I was told that the college's server has a problem running on vista home, which is what I had, currently the wireless is down, so after installing business and connecting the ethernet cable my notebook does not pickup any of several networks available, wireless or otherwsie

What to say you can also access the network using Vista.
But please note that the Vista OS supports additional network access security settings which must be either disabled or reset.
This How to website released by Microsoft should help you to configure the network settings with Vista:
    http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/networking.mspx
    Here several hints:
You should try to Open Network Diagnostics by right-clicking the network icon in the notification area, and then clicking Diagnose and repair.
The Vista supports additional firewall options. Please disable it while trying to connect to the server.

  • Failed out-of-box recovery using disks and hidden partition

I have a 2+ year old E305-S1990X that I have been trying to restore to factory condition. It's running Windows 7 and BIOS version 2.3.
I used the four recovery disks that I made when I initially purchased the computer but at disk 3 it stopped and never asked for disk 4.
I restarted the process after going to F12 and selecting the HDD partition option but after it reaches the "initializing partition" and then "copying files" step it asks to insert the next disk. It reads disk 2 and then immediately ejects it and asks for the next disk. I cancelled that operation.
I've made multiple attempts using both options without success. At one point, (apologies for my muddy recollection - it's been a long weekend) I got a F3-F200-0002 error and after my last attempt it failed to find the boot file. If I unplug the laptop, take out the battery and let it cool off, each new attempt seems to make a fresh start, but each has failed.
I have a user's guide and have followed the recovery instructions. If I've left out other relevant information please feel free to inquire.
I'm going to take it in to a local shop tomorrow because I've reached my limit of available time and expertise. I wonder if anyone has any ideas before I start throwing money at this problem, as I am limited in that as well!
Thanks in advance for any replies. I read through many many messages on this and other forums before I decided to post this and I appreciate everyone who volunteers their time and knowledge.

Hi! These are my thoughts. If you are not able to restore back to factory, you could have corrupted recovery media. Your DVD drive might not be reading the media. You could try to clean the drive with a DVD drive cleaner. Also make sure your discs are clean. You could have bad hardware. You could test the HD with seatools dos. You can test the memory with memtest86. Both are Linux based and they don't need a working OS to run. These are my thoughts. You may get better replies latter. PS There are many good tips about cleaning your DVD drive on Google.

  • Windows 7 won't fully boot after recovery to out-of-box state

I have reinstalled Windows 7 by holding down the 0 key on boot. The installation finished, but when windows booted into the setup screen for the first time, it crashed halfway through the driver installation process. When the laptop rebooted, it went into setup and showed an error message, asking me to restart the computer and the installation. I have re-installed windows again by using the recovery media and by using the 0 key on boot/factory reset, but the setup will crash again and then ask me to re-install windows. I am using a Satellite c655, 4gb ram with a intel pentimum processor. Any help would be appreaciated!

Model Number: C655-S5543Part Number: PSC2EU-06D00L I decided to reset the laptop to factory settings because the laptop was getting slow, as this unit was given to me from a family member, with all of their programs and files still on the hard drive. The only things I have changed in the bios is the boot speed to fast,  and turned off the beep sound.  The First time I turned on the laptop after it completed the recovery/factory reset, it loads a toshiba recovery window, but  it then restarts. When it restarts,  the black screen with the windows logo animation appears. It then goes into another black screen but with the letters "Setup is starting services", with a white loading bar underneath. It then started loading the drivers, but then came up with a bsod screen when the setup was around 47% done loading the drivers. I can't remember what the bsod screen said. Now when I turn on the laptop, the black screen with the windows logo animation appears again. It then goes into the same setup screen but with a dialog window that appears and says "The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click "OK" to restart the comptuer, and then restart the installation."

  • Recovery out-of-box state

    hello,
I have a toshiba satellite u400. I have used the system recovery (out-of-box state) multiple times by using the recovery disc and it worked. But lately when I try to do so, i get an error message, "cannot create or replace BIN: the path is too deep." This error occurs at the beginning of the recovery process while creating hdd recovery area. Is there a way around this?
    thank you,
    abdul

It sounds like there might be a problem with the hard drive itself.

  • Invalid Key Length error after 10.4.3 install/10.4.4 update

After installing Mac OS X, version 10.4.3 from CD, and upgrading to version 10.4.4 via Software Update, ran Disk Utility, verify disk, from DU on startup disk and got following message: "...Invalid key length...The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired. Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit...1 HFS volume checked...Volume needs repair." Tried rebooting from 10.4.3 install CD and running Disk Utility, First Aid, from CD to repair startup disk. After trying 3 times, First Aid halted and could not repair problem. Purchased Disk Warrior 3.0.3 CD, booted from DW CD, and DW also could not "rebuild" startup disk. Have purchased Drive Genius 1.2 CD from Prosoft to try to repair startup disk. If that fails, is only recourse to backup software on startup disk to external hard drive, and do erase and re-install of 10.4.3/10.4.4 software to cure problem? Please provide help!
    iMac G-4,800Mhz,512M Ram,60G HD   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Dear Andrew Penner, Thanks for reply. I will try re-install of 10.4.4 using the long version in Apple downloads rather than the abbreviated, tailored 10.4.4 version obtained thru Software Update. The suggestion to check Library/Receipts is useful. Since Mac OS 10.4 has been out nearly a year, I know someone must have experienced a similar error message by now (i.e. "Invalid key length") when running Disk Utility with new versions of 10.4. If only recourse is to "reinstall" the software, one wonders what is causing the "corruption" in the data in the first place. Puzzling. Will post result after reinstall and retest. I noticed the version of Disk Utility on my 10.4.3 Install CD is 10.5 whereas the version of DU on my hard drive after the 10.4.4 update is 10.5.3. Is that a problem? JaxJT

  • Xorg - SHIFT key bugs out randomly after TV-hardware is connected

I'm on Xfce4. When I hold down left SHIFT key and press some other keys, after a while the SHIFT key may "unregister" itself. What I mean is, it stops working as if I had released it, although I'm still pressing it down. Ie I'm suddenly writing lower-case again and stuff. This behaviour is application-independant apparently.
I tried running 'showkey' and it correctly reported pressing+releasing of the SHIFT key (keycode 42) when I actually physically pressed and released it. It did NOT report release of the SHIFT key when it in fact stopped working. So it doesn't seem to be a keyboard hardware problem or something.
The right SHIFT key (showkey says keycore 54 for this one) seems to work correctly though (but it's not really a comfortable work-around..).
Is there maybe a trick that could be used as a workaround, to somehow switch the right and left shiftkey's key codes? Maybe that could "fix" it. >:)
I had a look at xmodmap, but that shows entirely different "keycodes" for SHIFT keys so I'm a bit stumped:
    $ xmodmap -pk
..for "keycode 42" it had this line:
    42 0x0067 (g) 0x0047 (G) 0x0067 (g) 0x0047 (G) 0x03bf (eng) 0x03bd (ENG) 0x03bf (eng) 0x03bd (ENG)
..and for left shift key it had "50" in the "keycode" column:
    50 0xffe1 (Shift_L) 0x0000 (NoSymbol) 0xffe1 (Shift_L) 0x0000 (NoSymbol) 0xffe1 (Shift_L)
    Anyway, I tried out https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xmodmap:
    xmodmap -pke > ~/.Xmodmap
..then edited that file and changed the Shift_L (50) and Shift_R (62) lines, and did
    xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap
..and my X froze up completely, not even registering mouse clicks, might wanna correct the Wiki there^^.
After a reboot, my xmodmap -pke showed the two lines swapped as intended though - but 'showkey' still shows keycode 42 for left and 54 for right, so swapping didn't work here.
Funny thing is, now after a fresh reboot I seem unable to reproduce the bug, so I'll wait and see what happens I guess.
Now I have read about people getting a bug where SHIFT key is suddenly _pressed_ on its own, unlike my prob where it is released, and those people always write that it happens when a TV card is connected, and that it is detected as "keyboard" according to X0.log.
So I just connected my usual bunch of USB stuff that I had disconnected earlier just while that reboot happened after which my problem didn't surface.

Now I'm wondering, my webcam gets detected as "keyboard" (id 14) ^^' well and so does my Arduino, but that's natural for Leonardo models.
I started up the webcam, so the uvc modules are now loaded, but still I'm now unable to reproduce the bug for some reason. With either SHIFT key. Well that's good sort of, but then again, not so good to track what causes it when it happens And why does X think that webcams and tv  cards are keyboards?
Will post again when the bug surfaces again I guess.
Ok, after plugging in a usb-tv box, the bug started happening again, except this time it's the rigth shift key that doesnt work correctly, while the left shift key seems fine.
So it seems the xmodmap change worked, although showkey still shows 42 for left and 54 for right.
This might do as a workaround for now, although someone should figure out why tv cards (and tv usb boxes in my case) mess up the shift key in Xorg.
Apparently the IR-receiver part of my tv-box was recognized as "keyboard":

    $ rmmod dvb_usb_cinergyT2
rmmod: ERROR: Module dvb_usb_cinergyT2 is in use
but I don't have any media player running anymore, so why is the module in use and how do I see by what it is in use? Forced removal via rmmod -f worked by the way. Then I was able to remove the other two dvb_usb_ modules, and usbcore and i2c_core disappeared automatically.. but the bug still occurs! Any way to find out which other modules were possibly loaded, or what was done by the system, when I plugged in the tv box?

Do you have the 3 year Applecare? If so, you could try calling Applecare and see if they can help you resolve this over the phone. If not, be sure to get this problem documented with a case number before your 1 year warranty is up. If this has just been a constant hassle, you could ask to talk to Customer Relations.
It sounds like you may have some hardware problems with the keyboard and the trackpad, which could be causing at least some of the problems. Any chance of getting to an Apple store to have it looked at, or would you have to send it in?
    Good luck!
