Invalid Number in View

Hi,
How we can find out the offended join in the view query which is giving Invalid Number error, view structure is huge. Tables are having lots of data.
Suggestions/comments are welcome.
Thanks in Advance
Tehzeeb

Hello
I wouldn't have thought so. If you are joining a character column to a numeric column, it could be the source of the problem...
SQL> create table dt_test_num(id number)
  2  /
Table created.
SQL> create table dt_test_vc(id varchar2(10))
  2  /
Table created.
SQL> insert into dt_test_num values(1);
1 row created.
SQL> insert into dt_test_vc values('1');
1 row created.
SQL> insert into dt_test_num values(2);
1 row created.
SQL> insert into dt_test_vc values('A');
1 row created.
SQL> select a.*,b.* from dt_test_num a,dt_test_vc b where a.id=b.id;
select a.*,b.* from dt_test_num a,dt_test_vc b where a.id=b.id
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-01722: invalid numberI'm on 8i so I can't demonstrate the dbms_xplan stuff, but in the predicates section for this query, it should show you that behind the scenes, the optimiser has put TO_NUMBER(b.id) as one of the predicates. This could be what is happening in your case. Worth a look.

    This error occurs when you try to create a materialized view , but if you run the sql the results are perfectly fine. Well it happend to me also and to fix this I made sure all the coulmns have the same data type which are used in joins or in where clause.
    use
    where
    to_number(col1)=to_number(col2) and to_number(col3)=to_number(col4)
    hope this helps..

  • Ora-01722 invalid number error within view

    Hi, in my oracle 9.2.0.4.0 db, under TEST schema i've a view called PRODUTTIVITA_LINEE. I'm trying to create another view joining PRODUTTIVITA_LINEE with a table called LINEE. But when i execute the select (SELECT PRODUTTIVITA_LINEE.*, LINEE.NAME FROM PRODUTTIVITA_LINEE, LINEE WHERE PRODUTTIVITA_LINEE.LINEA_ID = LINEE.LINEA_ID), i obtain the ORA-01722 invalid number error.
    But if i create a table PRODUTTIVITA_SUPPORT as select all fields from PRODUTTIVITA_LINEE and i use it in the new query (SELECT PRODUTTIVITA_SUPPORT.*, LINEE.NAME FROM PRODUTTIVITA_SUPPORT, LINEE WHERE PRODUTTIVITA_SUPPORT.LINEA_ID = LINEE.LINEA_ID), all works.
    Using the view, the new query doesn't work, but using the same data toke from a table instead of view, all works. Why?

    Excuse me but i send modified script. Here the original script of object.

    java.sql.SQLException: ORA-01722: invalid number

  • View Debug: ORA-01722: invalid number

    Has anyone come across this problem in 4.0.2.00.06 when viewing debug information you get ORA-01722: invalid number in the interactive report when you drill down into the debug identifier? The XML chart displays Ok and I get the information in the top section. e.g. elapsed time information.
    As a test I've cleared the contents of WWV_FLOW_DEBUG_MESSAGES table and rerun debug mode but the problem persists.

    Jeff's work around is correct - if you remove the graph column, you should be able to display the rest of the report. I've found that this error primarily occurs when changing the session time zone (or using Automatic Time Zone support), but there may be other conditions which this also occurs.
    This was a bug that was filed and fixed recently for Application Express 4.1.

  • Interactive Report and the mysterious invalid number

    Hello,
    I have an application that is ready, or so I thought, to be sent to a client to update an existing application. One page in the application has an interactive report that is based on a table in the parsing schema that is joined to the apex_collections view. The report works without issue in my dev environment as well as in the client's test environment. But when a colleague tested the updated app in a different test environment, the report errors out with an ORA-01722: invalid number error.
    Needless to say I'm now hesitant about the update to production because I can't find the cause of the issue on my colleague's machine and would hate for this to happen in production. In trying to find the issue in on my colleague's machine, I first tried removing all of the columns (save the id) from the report to see if it was being generated there, no change. Then I started removing the joins and when the join to the apex_collections view was removed the error disappeared. The join was written as:
    SELECT *
    FROM table tbl
    JOIN apex_collections col
       ON tbl.id = col.c001
    WHERE col.collection_name = 'MY_COLLECTION';I know that the underlying tables for the apex_collections view store columns c001 .. c050 as VARCHAR2(4000) so I was relying on implicit data conversion to apply the join. Perhaps this is where the error is coming from but that would mean that "extra" rows are being returned as all of the c001 values returned in the session (from dev toolbar) are also valid numbers. As I said before, the problem is only occurring in 1 of 3 apex instances so I tested it in a 4th, and again, there was NO problem. I then realized that my query is potentially dangerous if c001 is used to hold something other than a number in the current session, which is NOT the case in any of the instances, but I tried updating the report to the following to see if it would help:
    SELECT *
    FROM table tbl
    JOIN (
       SELECT TO_NUMBER(c001) AS c001
       FROM apex_collections col
       WHERE collection_name = 'MY_COLLECTION'
    ) apex_col
       ON apex_col.c001 = tbl.idThat query worked as expected in the dev environment and will be used as the query going forward. However, it failed to fix the problem in the "problem" instance. This seems to be a local issue but I'd like to know for sure. All of the systems are configured as follows:
    1. Dev - Oracle 10g R2 XE - ApEx 3.1.2 - Works
    2. Test1 - Oracle 10g R2 EE - ApEx 3.1.2 - Works
    3. Test2 (colleague) - Oracle 10g R2 XE - ApEx 3.1.2 - Fails
    4. Test3 (my localhost) - Oracle 10g R2 XE - ApEx 3.1.2 - Works
    5. Prod - Oracle 10g R2 EE - ApEx 3.1.2 - ???
    Any ideas?

    Dan,
    I'm always suspicious of problems that disappear without knowing why - usually they reappear the very moment that an end-user starts using the app :D
    You didn't show how you are populating the collection in your original posting, so I'm not clear on exactly what the data would show. What I was thinking was, knowing that collections are all varchar2's, that something like TO_CHAR() had been used in the SQL statement that created the collection.
    I don't think that trimming the data would have any effect. If the problem does happen again, I would suggest creating a report based on the collection (basically doing a data dump onto a page) and then see exactly what is in there. If any number contains a comma (or other characters such as currency symbols), then you have to use a number format string to get back to the actual raw number.

  • ORA-01722: invalid number - Error during implicit conversion (10g vls 11g)

    I am facing oracle error for few SELECT queries in 11g which were working fine in 10g environment.
    Oracle Version:
    10g - 10.2.0.5.0
    11g - 11.2.0.3.0
    We are storing numeric values under CHAR or VARCHAR2 column in few tables. This is known design issue & it can't be changed for now.
    I know this will work fine until all the data is numeric in those columns for respective table. Because by some reason, if any row got character value for that column then implicit string to number conversion will fail and this error can occur. But I have verified that there is no data issue.
    But I can see difference in the execution plan! But not able to recognize the reason issue.
    Any other pointers on why the queries are failing in 11g would be of great help..
    Example SQL:
    Note that table structure and data is same in both the environments.

    The problem doesn't appear to be related to the Oracle version, at least not directly. If your query plan does the string to number conversion before eliminating the rows that have non-numeric data, you'll get an error. If the query plan eliminates the rows that have non-numeric data before doing the conversion, the query will succeed. It is entirely possible that you'd get the "bad" plan in 10g or the "good" plan in 11g.
    You can capture the query plans from your 10g database and move them over to the 11g database. Oracle has a nice white paper on upgrading from 10g to 11g that walks you through that process.
    Of course, you really don't want to be dependent on the optimizer picking the "right" plan, you really want to fix the underlying data model issue.

  • ORA-01722: invalid number caused with SQL using bind variable

    Hi,
    Im am hoping that someone can help me resolve a problem thats only just services and is being experienced on quite a few clients.
    our application uses C++ exes and makes OCI calls to the database.
    what has happened in the last week or so, there has been quite a few invalid number errors being received on a prod server but strangly enough we cannot reproduct the error on our UAT system.
    The sql is using bind variables and the information in the trace file shows that a number is being used for the bind variable, here is an extract from one trace file:
    for some schemas, the bind variable value is some currupted value, i think:
    oacdty=01 mxl=32(21) mxlc=00 mal=00 scl=00 pre=00
    oacflg=03 fl2=1206001 frm=01 csi=178 siz=32 off=0
    kxsbbbfp=9a8d62b8 bln=32 avl=03 flg=05
    value="Â*d"
    but on another schema, the value used is:
    Bind#0
    oacdty=01 mxl=32(32) mxlc=00 mal=00 scl=00 pre=00
    oacflg=03 fl2=1206001 frm=01 csi=178 siz=32 off=0
    kxsbbbfp=c5f92718 bln=32 avl=04 flg=05
    value="2101"
    however both produce invalid number errors.
    I am relatively inexperienced as a DBA so would appreciate as much help as i can get.

    Could you post your sql statement that is being run.
    Also post the query plan from your uat system and the one from your production system (They are likely to be different)
    You can export the stats from your production system and run them in your uat system. If you do this, then the execution plans should be the same on both systems(dbms_stats) and if you have the same data you should run into the same problem on uat as in production.
    The root cause of this type of problem is having a column in a table which holds values which are of different datatypes. Typically there is a condition in the where clause which indicates that for example only numeric columns should be retrieved from the column which holds multiple data types. However since the optimizer is free to rewrite the query any way it sees fit, (It does not necessarily execute in the order the sql statement is written) it does not filter this data first, and therefore you hit non-numeric data and run into the invalid number error.
    You can use little techniques like using an inline view with rownum in the column list, to perform the first filter. This ensures that the inline view is executed on its own, rather than being merged (materialized) with the rest of the query.
    A quick temporary solution is to use a comparison like to_char(column_name) = variable
    Make sure your comparisons are correct and it doesn't negatively impact on performance of the query

  • Microsoft Access shows "ORA-01722: Invalid number"

    Hi,
    I have seen a previous post on this problem, but none of the tips applied to my situation, so I'm asking again.
    I'm accesing Oracle 8i Personal (German Version) with Access 2002 (latest SP, on a computer with Windows 2000). Please note that I installed the latest ODBC driver from Oracle (8.1.7.6.0). When I create a table which has, say, a NUMBER(10,3) field in it, and I link it into Access using the ODBC driver, I cannot enter numbers like "1,23" into the table. The error "ORA-01722: Invalid number" is shown and the INSERT fails. If I enter the numbers like "1.23", the resulting field value is "123". The
    problem occurs, whether I use the table view, a form or VBA via ADO. Pass-Through queries (over ADO's QueryDef facility) work, however. The decimal separator is "," in both Windows and Oracle. With normal NUMBER fields everything works fine.
    When looking at the SQL log it turns out, that Access hands out a string to the ODBC driver and relies on the driver to convert it to a number. Regardless of the locale set in Windows, Access uses the dot ('1.23') as decimal separator for this string. The German version of oracle wants a comma as decimal separator as in "INSERT INTO TEST VALUES ('1,23')". From a previous post I know that ODBC specifies that all numbers must use the dot, regardless of the locale setting. So it turns out, the Oracle ODBC driver is causing the problem, not Access. But, anyway, this problem could easily be fixed by adding a "Workaround option" to the ODBC driver, that always converts dots in numbers to commas before handing it out to the backend. Another option would be, that the ODBC driver does this decision automatically by asking the backend, which separator it wants.
    Any comments greatly appreciated.
    Best regards
    Markus

    This is actually a duplicate of bug# 1938991 which says:
    "A 'Numeric settings' option has been added to the Application Options page of the ODBC Configuration screen so that the user can choose what numeric settings will be used in receiving and returning numeric data that is bound as strings. This option allows the user to choose Oracle NLS settings (the default setting and the behavior in former releases), Microsoft default regional settings (to provide a way to mirror the Oracle OLE DB driver's behavior for greater interoperability) and US numeric settings, which are necessary when using MS Access or DAO in non-US environments. In this case, setting the Numeric settings to US settings should resolve the issue, since DAO is expecting the data in US format."
    Apparently the fixed release is 9.2.0.2, 9.0.1.4 or 8.1.7.7 depending on your client version.

  • Invalid number error with Form on table page

    We used the "Form on Table..." wizard to create a simple page to update the SCOTT.EMP table. When we submit the page we get the ORA-01722: invalid number error. When I view the data in the WWV_FLOW_DATA view in the FLOWS_010500 schema, I can see all the data from our form in long format with the actual values that were submitted. But I can not track down where this error is coming from.

    James,
    What data did you enter in each field? Could it be as simple as you tried to enter character data into the deptno column?

  • Looks like a bug in DB, Getting a invalid number with a group by

    Hi All,
    This is very strange problem that I am encountering. Would like to hear from you, if you have also witnessed something similar:
    What I am doing:
    basically I am doing something like:
    Select x,y,z,count(distinct a) from
    taba,tabb,(select col1,col2 from tabc) tc,
    tabd left outer join tabe on tabd.col=tabe.col,
    viewf
    where (joins between the tabs)
    group by x,y,z
    All the join columns are number(10,0) in all the tables/views.
    If I run this query I get an invalid number 01722. If I comment the count(distinct a) column, the query runs fine.
    Or if I put the to_number for all the joined columns in the where clause, the query runs fine.
    I have never seen such behaviour of Oracle database. May be I am doing something really wrong?
    Looking for help.
    Thanks in advance.

    Well, I do not think it is related to GROUP BY or to DISTINCT. Most likely you have some column X that holds both numeric and non-numeric strings and some other column that indicates if column X value is numeric. If this is the case, you can get ORA-01722 simply becuase Oracle does not apply where clause predicates in the order they are listed. Assume column c1 holds numeric strings when column c2 is set to some specific value. Even if you use:
    WHERE c2 = 'some-value'
    AND TO_NUMBER(c1) = 5
    it is not guaranteed Oracle will first check c2 and only then c1. And if Oracle decides to check c1 first, TO_NUMBER will fail on the first non-numeric c1. Especially it can happen in not very recent Oracle versions. In recent versions most of the time optimizer is smart enough to realize that checking c2 costs less that converting c1 to number and then checking it, so it will check c2 first. Anyway, you need to use ORDERED_PREDICATES hint to let optimizer know to follow predicate sequence. For example, in 9i:
    SQL> create table tbx(flag varchar2(6),value varchar2(10))
      2  /
    Table created.
    SQL> insert into tbx values('alpha','abc');
    1 row created.
    SQL> insert into tbx values('number','123');
    1 row created.
    SQL> commit;
    Commit complete.
    SQL> select * from tbx
      2  where flag = 'number' and value = 123
      3  /
    where flag = 'number' and value = 123
    ERROR at line 2:
    ORA-01722: invalid number
    SQL> select /*+ ORDERED_PREDICATES */ * from tbx
      2  where flag = 'number' and value = 123
      3  /
    FLAG   VALUE
    number 123
    SQL>SY.

  • Locating row with invalid number from  table with few million rows

    We need to query the a table or a view of same to obtain a id of type VARCHAR with bind value being NUMBER. Any attempts in this regard I try seem to result ORA-01722: invalid number. Once case is below here
    SQL> select TEXT_ID FROM ATT_TABLE where to_number(TEXT_ID) = 9411956;
    select TEXT_ID FROM ATT_TABLE where to_number(TEXT_ID) = 9411956
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-12801: error signaled in parallel query server P010
    ORA-01722: invalid number
    1. TEXT_ID column is meant to have numeric values in VARCHAR type. It is possible that some record / row is not complying. How can I locate the non-complying records ?
    2. What would be a VIEW definition that would return only records with valid numeric data in TEXT_ID column.

    Of course the regexp_like is really cpu expensive, but there's no other solution in your situation
    The only way to differ numberic value from character, is REGEXP_LIKE function
    But you can do it using PL/SQL
    BEGIN
       FOR c IN (SELECT TO_NUMBER (ID) ID
                   FROM test_number)
       LOOP
          DBMS_OUTPUT.put_line (c.ID);
       END LOOP;
    EXCEPTION
       WHEN OTHERS
       THEN
          NULL;
    END;

  • Case When Statement and ORA:01722 Invalid number error

    Hi folks, I have posted this under another heading as well under E-business suite so apologies if some you have already seen it but I would really appreciate some help on this one. Any suggestions are most welcome.
    We are trying to put together a calculation that returns the number of days absent an individual has had in a given time period. We need to cater for those absences that started before the period and are closed during it, absence that start during the period and end after it, and those that open and close within it.
    The period is always a rolling 6 months from sysdate.
    This is the calc we have come up with so far which works for some people but we get the invalid number error if the absence includes a half day - so 0.5, 1.5,etc.
    This is probably over complicated but we are not techie at all so are learning as we go!
    We are using the HRMS - Administration - Oracle Human Resources (Core) business area in 10G and the Absence Attendance and Person folders.
    SUM(TO_NUMBER(NVL(( CASE WHEN Absence Attendance.Actual Start Date < TO_DATE(ADD_MONTHS(SYSDATE,-6),'DD-Mon-YYYY') THEN ( CASE WHEN Absence Attendance."Actual End Date" > SYSDATE THEN ( WORKING_DAYS_BETWEEN(TO_DATE(ADD_MONTHS(SYSDATE,-6),'DD-Mon-YYYY'),SYSDATE) ) ELSE ( CASE WHEN ( CASE WHEN TO_DATE(ADD_MONTHS(SYSDATE,-6),'DD-Mon-YYYY') >= Absence Attendance.Actual Start Date THEN ( WORKING_DAYS_BETWEEN(TO_DATE(ADD_MONTHS(SYSDATE,-6),'DD-Mon-YYYY'),Absence Attendance."Actual End Date") ) ELSE ( CASE WHEN ( WORKING_DAYS_BETWEEN(Absence Attendance.Actual Start Date,Absence Attendance."Actual End Date") ) IS NULL THEN ( WORKING_DAYS_BETWEEN(Absence Attendance.Actual Start Date,SYSDATE) ) ELSE ( CASE WHEN SYSDATE <= Absence Attendance."Actual End Date" THEN ( WORKING_DAYS_BETWEEN(Absence Attendance.Actual Start Date,SYSDATE) ) ELSE ( WORKING_DAYS_BETWEEN(Absence Attendance.Actual Start Date,Absence Attendance."Actual End Date") ) END ) END ) END ) IS NULL THEN ( WORKING_DAYS_BETWEEN(TO_DATE(ADD_MONTHS(SYSDATE,-6),'DD-Mon-YYYY'),SYSDATE) ) ELSE ( CASE WHEN TO_DATE(ADD_MONTHS(SYSDATE,-6),'DD-Mon-YYYY') >= Absence Attendance.Actual Start Date THEN ( WORKING_DAYS_BETWEEN(TO_DATE(ADD_MONTHS(SYSDATE,-6),'DD-Mon-YYYY'),Absence Attendance."Actual End Date") ) ELSE ( CASE WHEN ( WORKING_DAYS_BETWEEN(Absence Attendance.Actual Start Date,Absence Attendance."Actual End Date") ) IS NULL THEN ( WORKING_DAYS_BETWEEN(Absence Attendance.Actual Start Date,SYSDATE) ) ELSE ( CASE WHEN SYSDATE <= Absence Attendance."Actual End Date" THEN ( WORKING_DAYS_BETWEEN(Absence Attendance.Actual Start Date,SYSDATE) ) ELSE ( WORKING_DAYS_BETWEEN(Absence Attendance.Actual Start Date,Absence Attendance."Actual End Date") ) END ) END ) END ) END ) END ) ELSE ( CASE WHEN ( CASE WHEN TO_DATE(ADD_MONTHS(SYSDATE,-6),'DD-Mon-YYYY') >= Absence Attendance.Actual Start Date THEN ( WORKING_DAYS_BETWEEN(TO_DATE(ADD_MONTHS(SYSDATE,-6),'DD-Mon-YYYY'),Absence Attendance."Actual End Date") ) ELSE ( CASE WHEN ( WORKING_DAYS_BETWEEN(Absence Attendance.Actual Start Date,Absence Attendance."Actual End Date") ) IS NULL THEN ( WORKING_DAYS_BETWEEN(Absence Attendance.Actual Start Date,SYSDATE) ) ELSE ( CASE WHEN SYSDATE <= Absence Attendance."Actual End Date" THEN ( WORKING_DAYS_BETWEEN(Absence Attendance.Actual Start Date,SYSDATE) ) ELSE ( WORKING_DAYS_BETWEEN(Absence Attendance.Actual Start Date,Absence Attendance."Actual End Date") ) END ) END ) END ) IS NULL THEN ( WORKING_DAYS_BETWEEN(TO_DATE(ADD_MONTHS(SYSDATE,-6),'DD-Mon-YYYY'),SYSDATE) ) ELSE ( CASE WHEN TO_DATE(ADD_MONTHS(SYSDATE,-6),'DD-Mon-YYYY') >= Absence Attendance.Actual Start Date THEN ( WORKING_DAYS_BETWEEN(TO_DATE(ADD_MONTHS(SYSDATE,-6),'DD-Mon-YYYY'),Absence Attendance."Actual End Date") ) ELSE ( CASE WHEN ( WORKING_DAYS_BETWEEN(Absence Attendance.Actual Start Date,Absence Attendance."Actual End Date") ) IS NULL THEN ( WORKING_DAYS_BETWEEN(Absence Attendance.Actual Start Date,SYSDATE) ) ELSE ( CASE WHEN SYSDATE <= Absence Attendance."Actual End Date" THEN ( WORKING_DAYS_BETWEEN(Absence Attendance.Actual Start Date,SYSDATE) ) ELSE ( Absence Attendance.Duration Days ) END ) END ) END ) END ) END ),( DAYS_BETWEEN(Absence Attendance.Actual Start Date,Absence Attendance."Actual End Date") )),'999999990D00'))

    Hi,
    It could be that this is because you are using SYSDATE which contains the time as a fraction rather than TRUNC(SYSDATE) which just contains the current time. It could be that your working_dates_between raises this error.
    However, your formula is far more complicated than it needs to be.
    Firstly, you want to look at the date window ADD_MONTHS(TRUNC(SYSDATE), -6) to TRUNC(SYSDATE). Then you want to look at the portion of the absence that falls in the date window. This is GREATEST(Absence Attendance.Actual Start Date, ADD_MONTHS(TRUNC(SYSDATE), -6)) to LEAST(NVL(Absence Attendance."Actual End Date",TRUNC(SYSDATE)), TRUNC(SYSDATE)). You may need to add 1 to the absence end date because this is the last day of their absence rather than the date they return. It depends how you calculate the days between the start and end
    date of the absence. You can create calculations for the start and end date of the absences within the 6 months time window. Create calculation AbsenceStart as
    GREATEST(Absence Attendance.Actual Start Date, ADD_MONTHS(TRUNC(SYSDATE), -6))
    and AbsenceEnd as
    LEAST(NVL(Absence Attendance."Actual End Date",TRUNC(SYSDATE)), TRUNC(SYSDATE))
    Then you need to only pick up absence that a part of the absence in your 6 month date window. You can use a condition in the workbook or a condition in a case statement to do this. You then need to calculate the difference between these dates and SUM all the values.
    SUM(CASE WHEN AbsenceEnd >= AbsenceStart THEN WORKING_DAYS_BETWEEN(AbsenceStart, AbsenceEnd) END)
    That's it. Not so complicated after all.
