Inventory scan slows the workstation down

Hi,
we use zfd 4 since more than 3 years. (server 5.1SP8 with ZFD 4IR7)
The inventory runs fine before we have begun to install all the Windows
XP patches.
We tried many netware client and zfd client versions. But the
ntscan32.exe needs now more than 10 minutes to scan our workstations
(new hardware DELL Latitude D-Series). During this time you cannot work
with this workstations, even it is a full or differential scan.
We play a little with the inventory policies, but nothing helps. Policy
is configured to run on system start with software and hardware scan.
Any ideas?
Chris

no, but we found the problem:
We have about 48 application objects with XP patches and every
application has its own dependencies. It seems that the checking of
these dependencies simultaneously to the inventory scan causes the slow
downs. After we have deleted the associations to the workstation
objects everything looks like before.
Now we think the NAL has some problems to work with complex
dependencies.
Thank you for your help

I have a 1st generation time capsule and an appe extreme b/g. Is the extreme slowing the network down? Should I dump it an get the new n version?

yes it is likely to be slowing down the network because you are using 802.11b/g
from what i recall with b/g a slow client can slow down the entire network to that clients speed.
this was the major improvement with 802.11n and Mimo. each client can be connected to the access point without affecting your speed to the rest of the network
its reccomended to get all new "N" equipment if you have the budget for it. some of those old airports and time capsules can still be worth something on amazon marketplace so you might be able to sell them
if you want to create / join / extend a netwowrk your going to probably need all "n" based equipment.
buy the new 4th generation time capsule or the new 5th generation airport they have better stronger radios
in the mean time configure your base station router to a high multicast rate, so it will prevent devices connecting to it at 1-2 mbps speeds and slowing down your network
if you have an apple care covered mac remember the airport / time capsule rule. all airports and time capsules purchased 2 years before you bought your mac to the 3 years of apple care covers them. if you do not have apple care then the standard warranty applies

  • Firefox.exe uses too much memory slowing the computer down, what can be done?

This doesn't happen every time I am using the browser, maybe half of the time. When it does happen it takes a long time for it to clear up. It can slow the computer down even after I have exited out of the program, maybe still not responding because of high memory usage. Is there anything I can do to get Firefox to run smoothly?

Some updates are better handled by Internet Explorer or the built-in updater, such as any updates from Microsoft's Windows Update or Office Update systems. (These systems are not compatible with other browsers.)
You can use the "all systems" page to download a full installer and then copy it over to your XP system.

  • Inventory Scans Slow down Workstation

I'm running ZfD 3.2 and have the inventory policy set to to scan machines
once a day at 'Below Normal' priority. When inventory runs, workstations
bog-down, not due to the inventory scanner process, but because the
workstation's virus scan sofware scans the files as they are opened by
the scanner. The workstation virus scnan software is McAffee VSE 7.1.
Has anyone found a way to disable virus scanning while inventory is
running and re-enable it when the scan is finished? There isn't any
option on the inventory scheduler to run a pre or post execution script.
    Thanks.

No, not that I am aware of. What happens if you choose a higher
priority ? Does it change anything ?

  • HT4623 Upgrading software on iPad1 - will this slow the iPad down?

    Hello
I currently hand an iPad (first generation) and I was just wondering if I upgrade to the latest iOS would this slow my iPad down?

It should not slow it down any amount that you'd notice. If you're reluctant to do so at the remote chance that it might affect performance, hold off on updating if the Apps you want to use support your iOS version (you still did not state which version it is).
To see which iOS version your iPad is running:
    Settings>About>Version
OTOH, if the Apps you wish to run require at least iOS 5.1.1, then you pretty much have no choice and updating would be required.

  • PC Boots then writes giant datastore.edb file slowing the computer down

The system that I'm looking at is Windows 7, 32bit.
When the system boots up it spends a ton of time reading and writing to the DataStore.edb file which is located in Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore directory. This makes the system run
really slow for several minutes, probably about 10 if I'm honest. If you stop the Windows Update service, within a minute the system will stop reading and writing from the file and everything runs smoothly.
    Things I've tried:
I've stopped Windows Update, deleted the file, rebooted, but when I do that Windows rebuilds the file until it's a few hundred MB in size. Once Windows is happy with whatever it's doing, it stops and my disk usage and cue drop down to normal levels and the
system does whatever you want with plenty of speed.
I've booted into SafeMode and run several virus scans and Kaspersky's RootKit killer tool and nobody finds anything offensive.
    What should I try next?

    Hello Lawrence,
I've found a couple of your technet answers to similar questions about this topic (through google searching) and thought that even though it's been years I might as well fill you in on these basic questions because I'm having identical issues and this is
developing into a pattern of folks finding this then never getting back to you.
    Windows 7 Pro 64bit, Service Pack 1
It does happens on every single power-on.
Last successful system updates were 2/20/2015. (This has been happening for much longer.)
    SoftwareDistrobution\Downloads and DataStore.edb are both >700MB.
I have only my machine with this issue. (Maybe useful background; I'm a contractor in IT systems and I have taken this system into two other domains, which were joined for a while >month, one of these domains I was asked to review WSUS and GPO, a bug
in which is my prime suspect for how this started. )
Further I wanted to let you know that I have followed the advice you gave on checking the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistrobution\Downloads folder for old updates and there are many from a period two years ago. I have deleted these and the problem has gotten much
better but not completely fixed.  DataStore.edb is still 700MB.
    What do you think?
P.S. I considered creating a new thread but I found these threads that you had never resolved through Google (searching 'DataStore.edb' and 'SoftwareDistrobution disk usage',) so I'm posting here.

  • Why does moving the mouse over an IMAQ image display slow the GUI down so much?

I have a large application with several vi's running simultaneously under labview 8.6.1.  When I mouse over an image display control in one of the vi's, everything slows down a shocking amount in all the other vi's.  The windows task manager does not show a large increase in CPU use.  My pc is has a quad cpu with 4GB of RAM, and the CPU and memory loads do not appear to be terribly taxing to the system.  However, many of my vi's apparently come almost to a standstill if I just move the mouse in a circle around my image control.
This looks like it is largely a GUI display issue.  If I make a new vi and put a while loop in it that only displays the iteration loop number to an indicator, I can see the iterating occurring, then stopping totally when I mouse inside the image display control.  When I stop moving the mouse inside the control, or when I move it outside the control, the interation loop number jumps up, as if it had been incrementing behind the scenes the whole time.  So only display of the interating was halted.
This problem occurs even if the vi with the image control is not executing.  If the vi with the image control is open but not running, and I mouse over the image on it, the other guis all come to a screeching halt.
Does mousing in the image display control really utterly crush all other guis in all other labview windows?  Is this an issue inherent to the image display control?  If so, is there anything I can do about this?
Also, this issue is not entirely limited to display.  I started looking at it in greater detail because this issue also exposed what I think is a race condition in my code.  I have a vi that acquires an image from a ccd and puts it into an IMAQ image.ctl.  This image then gets passed up to a vi up the call chain, and is put on a queue and sent over to be de-queued by a vi that has the image display control.  Here's the kicker:  when I mouse over the image display control, the image successfully gets acquired inside the subvi, and if I probe the wire leading to the output IMAQ image display.ctl, I see the image.  If I simultaneously probe the wire coming out of the subvi one level up the call chain, the image gets lost about half the time.  This only happens if I am mousing in the image display control IN A TOTALLY DIFFERENT AND SEPARATE VI.  If I bump up the priority of the ccd image acquisition vi to 'highest priority', the problem only happens about 1% of the time, and I really have to mouse around to make it happen.  Still, it's disturbing that mousing in the GUI in one window results in a failure of a separate subvi to simply pass an image up the call chain.  I understand that IMAQ images are referenced rather than passed by value, but I don't see why there should be a failure to pass the image up the call chain.  I've looked for a race condition, but can't find one.
    Eric

I have finally been able to replicate the behavior that you are seeing on another computer once the image was large enough.  Here are a few notes about this behavior:
First. The UI only slows down when the images are large, 16 bit images.  The reason why this is unique to 16 bit images is that they can only be displayed on the front panel as 8 bit images.  The workaround that Weiyuan suggested to change the 16 bit display mapping hints towards the root of the problem...that any time a mouse runs over the indicator, Windows asks the entire image to re-draw (having a separate indicator overlapping the image will create the same behavior).  With a 16 bit image, not only does the image have to re-draw on the screen but the 16 bit pixels need to be mapped to 8 bits.  When setting the 16 bit display mapping to Full Dynamic, this requires mor computation/pixel than 90% dynamic or one of the other mapping schemes.
This is expected behavior if your program is running and you're trying to display a large 16 bit image.  To fix this behavior there are a couple options:
Change the 16 bit display mapping to something other than full dynamic.  You can choose which 8 bits to display or if you want to map the bits.
Resize the image just for viewing purposes on your front panel (since you aren't going to view every single pixel of you image on the screen). You can use the IMAQ Resample.vi to do this.  This will allow you to take your 1500x1500 pixel image and only display a 500x500 pixel version.
If you are interested in viewing small details of the large image, consider just displaying a smaller region of interest at a time.
Let me know if any of these solutions work for you.  Good luck on your application.

  • Which stack is the one slowing the logon down?  Also, logs suck.

If there's an easy way to tell, someone PLEASE tell me.  As it is now, we are finding it impossible to tell which stack (or stacks) are the culprit behind slow logons (just waiting for the 180 second timeout).  The frustrating thing is that once the timeout happens and the user is logged into the desktop all of the apps that were linked DO work.  So why the delay?  And how can we figure out which stack it was that caused it?
Side note, the logs generated by App Volumes in the VM make me want to claw my eyes out.  A giant run-on sentence, no delimitation, no breaks.  Has no one on the App Volumes team ever had to actually look at one of those logs?  I find that impossible to believe, so how about making the log just slightly more readable in 2.next or 3.0? /rant

Hey JHT, We will be going forward with McAfee move. I will let you know about test results.
And nice to be locked into one antivirus vendor, right?? We also noticed that documentation is very limited (as in almost non) on how to pull this one off..
This is info i received but is "as is" so no oficial statment or whatever. More of a discussion between me and Appvolumes on how we could be using virusscanning. I would also strongly suggest excluding snapvoluemstemp indeed although i'm not quite sure if virusccanners see this directory dus to it being mountpoints. This info is from way back when it was still Cloudvolumes but my guess is it would still hold up now.
    1) Scan provisioning VM before anything get attached, make sure base image is clean.  Fully finish provisioning applications  Enable real-time scanning, then reattach this AppStack to this VM to make sure it's working as expected plus virus free. So the AppStack gets verified before anybody using it. I understand that you still want to scan on access, so here is another option:
    2) For other VMs, modify the scan policy say exclude all the application directories (like program files (x86)\office… or c:\autocad for example) based on apps it will be attaching. The files captured on our AppStack are pretty much the application files so to minimize the scan scope, exclude the application files will do it. AppStack is read-only so once you verify it in option 1 it will not be modified

  • Does a high number of user accounts (e.g. 7) slow the computer down?

    Mavericks 10.9.5, 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7, 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3

What was stated isn't completely accurate.
If you have seven users sharing one computer and all of them are filling up the Mac's hard drive with data, once the hard drive is nearing full (15 GBs OR less), then all of the users of this Mac will start seeing slow downs when they are using it.
If you are using that many users on one Mac, it would be best if you purchase a high capacity storage, (say 3 TBs or even larger, if you can afford it) fast transfer protocol (USB 3.0, Thunderbolt or FIreWire 800 connections) externally connected hard drive and partition it and have every user setup to store their data the external hard drive, instead. This leaves the hard drive inside the Mac relatively free of everyone's data and will keep it running much faster for a longer period of time as you won't run out of internal hard drive storage space as quickly.

  • DVDRW is Mega-Slow and slows the system down

    Hi,
    I have:
4 x SATA2 disks on the ICH7 (three in RAID 0, one as single disk)
1 x IDE DVDRW on the Secondary IDE port, set as slave
When I burned a DVD yesterday the sound started to slow, I thought it was the application. But when I try to install a game DVD, the same thing happens .. the sound becomes 'jittery' and most noticeably the DVD takes AGES (FOREVER) to read.
I checked the BIOS, JMicron is set to IDE. the rest is set to defaults.
I checked Device Manager, the only active channel (Secondary IDE) which was set to 'PIO ONLY'. I changed this to 'DMA if available' but it's still in PIO mode. I beleive it should be in DMA??
Should I be using a different cable? I'm using the MSI supplied cable at present.
Any assistance would be much appreciated!
     - FrobinRobin

You already have the latest stable release from MSI, but unfortunately lots of MSI customers have a problem with this BIOS version. There is a Beta release (1.6a) that BOSSKILLER posted earlier
    http://www.ukshazam.com/download/bosskiller/7235v16A.rar
and it’s upgrading the Jmicron BIOS version too. You can choose between DOS or Windows flashing procedure. If you decide in Windows mode, download the latest BIOS version from MSI Live Update (Application that came with your Installation CD for keeping your MB up to date) and the file from the link above. After everything downloaded, go to Program files-Setup files replace only the bios file (extension .150) with the one from the link above(extension .16A), and run the MSIsetup file. Make sure that the Clear CMOS option is selected. For safety reason, make a recovery floppy and check for some setting in BIOS before flashing, so that you can configure the new version of the BIOS properly.
About the Widows drivers, Go to Control Panel – System- Hardware - Device Manager- “SCSI and RAID controllers” – right click on Jmicron- Uninstall.
Then:  Control Panel- Add or Remove Programs – JRAID-uninstall.
Restart your computer, and when you’ll be prompt that “Found New Hardware”, click cancel on the “Found New Hardware wizard” and install the drivers that I’ve posted earlier (double click on the setup file).
Try with the drivers first, and if the installation is successful under DVD/CD Rom Devices you will notice that the drive is recognized as SCSI cD/Rom Device.
    Good Luck

  • JVM Memory saturates and slows the server down

    Hi all,
New serveur on W7. CF9 installed.
Every day, need to kill JVM process saturing up to 1,5Go to liberate memory.
How come that it does not come down. How to tune it in order to fit my trafic needs ?
    Thanks for your help,

    Hi,
Some more detail would probably help. Windows 7, CF9 and Java are 32 or 64 bit?
For bit check CF Java via Server Settings > Settings Summary > Java VM Name  EG Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM
Sometimes Java matters are logged to ColdFusion9\runtime\logs\coldfusion-out.log . Any Java warnings or error messages in that log file?
JVM logging can be useful to know what is going on Java memory wise. I think there are many resources to search on how to do that tho if you want some direction reply the thread and I am sure to be able to point you to some links.
Indeed 1.5Gb is not a lot of RAM but it may not be apportioned well to suit your needs. Other than JVM logs it would also be interesting to know what Java version (A) you are using plus your JVM arguments (B)?
    A) Server Settings > Settings Summary > Java Version EG 1.6.0_29
    B) ColdFusion9\runtime\bin\jvm.config >
    # Arguments to VM portion
    java.args=-server  -Xmx512m -Dsun.io.useCanonCaches=false -XX:MaxPermSize=192m -XX:+UseParallelGC
That should start to help you along, Carl.

  • JNI slows the code down...

    Hi,
I've written a piece of jni code, basically to enable my app to handle linux signals. At the moment the jni code does nothing but lunch java VM and calls static function from my class (inside some JAR file). I have noticed that the program executes about 3-4 times slower than as if I started it without the jni part... ("java -jar myjar.jar" ...). Any ideas exlaining such behaviour? I suppose that the program might start a bit slower as all th edynamic libraries need to be loaded, but thats not the thing. Even after all the stuff is loaded it doesnt speed up. I'm using 1.6u6.
I'll check later today if it'd help to lunch my app from jni, spawn it to new thread, return to jni and sleep. This way, I suppose, the code wouldn't be executed "from" jni but only inside VM? Does that make any sense to anyone?
    Thanks for any feedback?
    Lukasz

hi, actually this is not what I meant. I am aware that jni calls are quite slow but...
What I'm doing is that I'm lunching the whole java application using a piece of C code:
My java app has class Main which has static method void start(String[]) and normal entry method main.
to initiate the app I can either run my jar normally using "java -jar myjar.jar" or I I can (and did) write a piece of C code which will open JVM and call start() method.
    see bolow:
    JNI_CreateJavaVM(&jvm, (void**)&env, &vm_args);//starting JVM
    jclass Main=(*env)->FindClass(env,Java_Main);//looking for class Main
    jmethodID statMethode = (*env)->GetStaticMethodID(env,Main,"start","([Ljava/lang/String;)V");
    (*env)->CallStaticVoidMethod(env, Main, statMethode,args);
the difference is that when I start my app using the second method, the application works 3-4 times slower. I'm wondering if this is a normal behaviour of JNI or perhaps I'm doing something wrong?
