Invert scanned super-8 negative film to positive in FCP?

Have some negative super-8 film that is going to be direct transferred to a Quicktime file.
I scan negative still film and invert it to a positive in Photoshop, however am not sure if this is possible to do with motion picture film in FCP.
Is it?
What is the best way to work with scanned negative film in FCP?
Direct telecine is far too expensive (from what I've seen) for this particular project, so I'm looking for a way to invert it in the computer.

If indeed you are planning to project the negative and shoot it off the wall, you should know that negative stock has different sprocket perforations than a print. They are smaller and have a different shape and are not the same distance apart as regular print sprocket holes. This is so that they can be held firmly in the gate of a printer. It is entirely possible, even with you taking the utmost care, and using a projector that is clean and tweaked into perfect spec, that you can run that negative only once, after which it will be so chewed up you'll never be able to run it again.
Just so you know.

  • Convert a film negative to a positive file

    Hello All,
I am photographing 2 1/4 negatives with a CANON 50D and macro lens. Then in Photoshop CS3 I was looking for the filter to convert the negative film file into a positive file so I can work on it with Adobe and then print in on my Canon printer.. I have tried to sample the orange base color and take that out and then invert and then increased the contrast curve. Can not get it right... Is there a way to do it with Adobe or is there a plug in to do this. Or is there a program on line to do this?
    Thank You.
    Robert Gladden.

Here's a curves based procedure for inverting color negatives that works
    reasonably well:

  • How do In scan negative film to be able to see tiffs in Lightroom 4?

How do In scan negative film to be able to see tiffs in Lightroom 4?

LR supports TIFF format files up to 65,000 pixels and 2GB in size according to: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/lightroom/using/WS42D207D7-B290-4baa-A896-AB71965BF24B.html, so 70MB shouldn’t be a problem.
TIFF is a container format so the actual image data contained within could vary e.g. uncompressed, JPEG etc. Maybe the image data is incompatible with LR? I personally use uncompressed TIFF for certain operations so this is definitely compatible.
Do you have any TIFFs that can be imported? Perhaps you could compare the compatible and incompatible TIFFs using a metadata viewer such as the very excellent ExifTool by Phil Harvey (http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool)
NB Bogdan Hrastnik has developed a Windows GUI wrapper for ExifTool available here: http://u88.n24.queensu.ca/~bogdan/
Maybe the issue is local to your system and LR does, in fact, support the files. I’d be happy to try importing one on my system if you’d like to send one through...

  • Does anyone know how I turn negatives into a positive on Aperture please?  I have scanned  a bunch of negs and want ot make a contact sheet. Would really appreciate some clues on where to start.  Thanks

does anyone know how I turn negatives into a positive on Aperture please?  I have scanned  a bunch of negs and want ot make a contact sheet. Would really appreciate some clues on where to start.  Thanks

Yeah, it's simple. You scan your images singly, then import them. Then, one by one adjust them. Under the adjustment brick, pull up the CURVES tool. It is one of dozens available from the pulldown menu on the left side.
So, with your image in view, you click on the adjustment tool, select CURVES (which will be at the bottom of a few other adjustment sliders such as EXPOSURE) under the Histogram and then grab the bottom of the right hand curve and swing it all the way to the left. Then grab the left hand curve and drag it all the way to the right.
The right curve represents highlights. The left curve represents shadows. Now the two are reversed. Your negative is now a positive. For added control, you can create mid-tone curves of your own and make finer adjustments. I haven't done this much so the experts might weigh in here with corrections and added advice.

  • FCP and negative film color correction?  Any experience?

    Hello There,
I'm running into more and more low budget filmmakers who are trying there hand at making short films in Super 8 movie film (yes, it's still around believe it or not). Kodak has two new film stocks out for Super 8 and one is 200T and the other is 500T (both cut down from their pro 16mm and 35mm pro stocks).
When these filmmakers get this stuff developed they don't have the money to have it transferred at a pro shop so they are using equipment made by a company in Texas that does a very good job at transferring the film, but it doesn't have the adjustments needed to make negative film look the way it should.
I know a few people who color correct it with FCP and FCE and they can actually make it look fairly good.
My question is: is there a plug in or other software that can be used that is meant to do this? Or does anyone have any experience on this site with color correcting negative film with FCP? If so, what filters do you use?
Any thoughts or comments would be great to hear from. Remember, I know this can be done by the big players, what I want to know can it be done with FCP and still look fairly good?
    Thanks for your help,
    Mike

Well, this is pretty easy. Just throw a CHANNEL>INVERT on the negative footage before you color correct. You might have to do that before you even begin editing, as that turns the negative image into a positive one. It isn't Real Time though, so you'll have to render all the time...every cut. Unless you add the filter an export a self contained QT Movie of each tape. But then you lose time code.
So why do they do this again? Cheaper...OK. Ease? Not really.

  • Pse8 trial version & scanning b&w negatives

    Hello!
I've just downloaded the trail version before buying: I wanted to test if I am able to use my Canon flatbed scanner & pse 8 to scan B&W negatives and then turn them into positives. I want to do this from time to time instead of using contact sheets. I've managed fine with the exception that certain functions are possibly not available in the trial version. My questions are: Has anyone used pse 8 for scanning negatives with success and is there any way I can turn on the functions needed, namely revert to black & white. Are there detailed instructions for this anywhere? Any suggestions much appreciated. (I did find a couple of hints in flickr but they were for older pse versions and while somewhat helpful didn't do the job).

hello & thanks but i've done exactly that numerous times but i am unable to select convert to black and white. it is better described as being "gray" can't click on it as opposed to "black" and available. i am not sure if i need to do something else so i can use it but it's starting to annoy the hell out of me. i've tried many different ways. even read a post in which i should first scan the negatives open in editor copy the image open a new document paste the scanned image go to LAYER then new adjustment layer then invert and then once i've inverted it to then convert to black and white once that is done i can fiddle with the grayscale ect. thanks again. think i'm just going to go back to my old ways...

  • I"m not able to scan a single negative with my CanoScan 5600F scanner that I just bought.

I'm trying to scan an old black and white negative. Unfortunately, it is not in a strip of six as seems to be indicated in the manual, although it doesn't say specifically it HAS to be a strip of six.
I opened MP Navigator Ex. Following are the settings I used:
    Film
Film type: Black and white negative film
Resolution 4800 dpi. I also used 1200 dpi
I put the negative on the far end of the film holder.
I clicked on scan and got the following message at both resolutions:
    Cannot scan for these reasons:
-The original may not be set correctly
-The Protective Sheet may be put in place
-The lamp may not be warming up
(it needs a few minutes for adjusting lamp on low temperature)
    Scanner driver will be closed
    Code: 2,178,0
I've scanned negatives with another scanner some years ago and never had this trouble. Any suggestions?
    Thank you.

The same problem occurred on my iPad. Everything has current updates. Created new document the previous day and now unable to open. Hope there is a immediate solution. The reason I don't like software changes is the priority for reliable software nearly 99.99% of the time. Who knew? The reason I chose this software because hoping it also had the 99.99% reliability.

  • My daughter wants something to scan photos and negatives to her ipad...any suggestions

Any suggestions on what to get for scanning photos and negative to an ipad? Thanks!

Search the App store - there are dozens of scanning apps available for free or fee.  But read the description carefully or visit the developer's site as some may not be great for photo's, and especially for negatives (many seem optimized for scanning paper images or documents).
P.S. you might want to experiment with searches in the App store - using "film scanner" brings up different apps than just using "scanner" does - there do seem to be at least some apps specifically intended for scanning films and negatives.

  • Photo Negative to a Positive

I have an HP PSC 1315xi; is it possible to use it to turn a photo negative to a positive?

    Hi there @Cleos
    Welcome to the HP Community,
You would most likely need a ScanJet model in order to scan negatives.
I have checked the printers specifications and this printer does not seem to turn negatives into positives.
Printer Specifications for HP PSC 1315, 1315v, 1315xi, and 1315s Printers
I hope that answers your question!

  • Have a picture scanned from a negative, the whole picture is off-color. Whats the best way to fix it

I scanned an old negative and the resulting picture is off-color (as was the negative). What are the best ways to correct this?

  • What is wrong with my phone if it is discolored like a negative film and has flickering lines?

I dropped my Iphone 4 last week, and when I checked it next the screen had severe discoloration, similar to a negative film affect. When I go to the lock screen it is a white screen with flickering horizontal lines on it. On my main screen there are also some lines at the top. I have tried resetting and restoring it and that did not help. And I have also looked at setting to see if that was why my screen was negative, and that was not the problem. Does anyone know what may be wrong with my phone?
When i take a screenshot the normal colors comes back for a second or so and then go away

What's wrong is most likely you broke it.
Take it to the Apple Store along with your credit card. An out of warranty replacement will cost you US$149.

I would like to know when this situation arises and what is the impact on the database/cube.

  • Does aperture invert B&W negative film scan files (raw format)?

    hi, I'm new to aperture.
I need it mainly to fix the luminance levels to my raw files that I get scanning my negative B&W films.
obviously I need to invert them befor fixing the levels, can apeture do that or I need to use an external application or my scanning software (vuescan).
would be great to use aperture because doing so would speed-up my scanning workflow.
    regards G.

I second that. Vuescan will give you much better control over the final product than almost any other scanner software. You can find it here:
    http://www.hamrick.com/
Which reminds me, that I probably need to get the latest version! It has been a while since I upgraded.
You can install it and try it for free - it will watermark your images until you pay.

  • Scanning a 35mm slide film and trying to get it a certain image size and resolution

    Hi All,
I am using the Nikon Super CoolScan8000 and Vuescan program to scan a slide film. I am scanning at this setting: scan resolution 4000 dpi. I have to make it a certain dimension that someone has been asking me for. They want the image at Width = 60cm (approx. 23 inches) and 300 dpi.
When I scan at 4000 dpi, I'm not sure what size to make the printed width. I have experimented numerous times and I've had no luck with getting exactly what I want. It seems that when I make the width 60 cm (the height adjusts proportionately) and the dpi at 300, the quality is not that great, which it definitely needs to be because it will be printed at a large size.
    Someone please help ASAP!
    Thank you!
PS I am using Adobe Photoshop CS3 and I also have Adobe Photoshop Elements 9

You can only get 228 ppi out of the end product. That should be good enough.
