Invisible attachments

Emails sent to me with clearly visible attachments when viewed at mac.com with my Safari browswer looking at my emails, are at times (5% perhaps) totally invisible when viewed through the Mail program on my iMac. Not only can't I see or open the attachment which I KNOW the email contains using Mail, but the attachment is not even listed up in the header of the email. This only happens sometimes. What's going on? Thanks.

That other thread is describing a slightly different issue than the OP. The OP (and I) both have the dual problem of not being able to see the attachment is present in the top list, and not seeing the attachment either in Quicklook or the email itself. The workarounds for using File menu don't work either because the attachment just isn't there and so they're greyed out.
The only thing that worked was to move them out of my Inbox using Entourage, and then moving them back in. When I did that they reappeared. Kind of requires me to have Entourage, though, which defeats the whole purpose of Mail.

  • Lost attachments in Mac Mail ...

I have an email thread (quite a long one). In one of the emails sent to me was an important document, it was sent as an attachment. I am trying to retrieve this document, however, when I go to find that particular message in the thread I cannot click the attachment. The message no longer is in standard format, but rather colored text.
Does mac mail only store messages with attachments for so long? Is there a way to retrieve it? Please Help!!
    Thanks

The problem of "invisible" attachments sounds all too familiar. I am using Apple's "Mail" program ver. 3.4.
Recently, attachments have not always been showing up when the email's file size and the Paperclip icon indicates an attachment should be present. I have found that when this happens, very often I can view the hidden attachment by either going to the File Menu and choosing "Quick Look Attachments", or by pressing the Command and Y keys simultaneously. On occasion, I have had this abnormality occur from the same sender's email account who has also sent other emails with attachments that have shown up.
If this is a known Bug, hopefully the upcoming OS X 10.5.5 update will provide a fix.

  • Office 2010 / Exchange 2010 - Attachments in EML-Emails are invisible

We are investigating a problem that seems to pop up with Exchange / Outlook 2010.
This is the absolutly the same problem that Clemens Wunder wrote about in his tread:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/outlook/thread/afce3bd0-f8a4-419b-986a-0560ebff5f8f
    Problem:
We got several eml-files in a Management System and those have attachmentes (word, pdf whatever) included.
If i open those EML Files in Outlook 2010 (this works if the Registry is apropriate) the Email is opening but the Attachments are "invisible"...
If i now save the Mesage from within Outlook 2010 as a MSG File and open this one the attachments are back...
I searched for bout one week now for a solution but i still don't get it why this should be happening.
    My Specs:
    - Windows 7
    - Outlook 2010
    - Exchange 2010 (migrated from 2003)
    Fact:
The same problem seems also to happen with Outlook 2007 and 2003 since the migration of Exchange 2003 to 2010.
Those EML Files are from within a data management system and are stored as eml since bout 4 years.
Please don't send answers like "Use Windows Mail" - this is not a solution for this matter because I can't.
Exchange / Outlook is used at every customer of our company so WM can't be the solution...
Thanks for your advices and tips
    Roman

    Hi Roman,
To make sure I understand things correctly…..
You have EML files generated by another program. Emails have one or more attachments.
You have copied the EML files into your Outlook 2010 profile’s mail folder.
When you open the item in the folder, you have to open or save the item. –You have HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Outlook.File.eml.14\shell\Open\command set
to use Outlook 2010 to open the file.
When you open the EML file, the message opens but the attachments are not visible.
In actuality, when you open the EML file, Outlook is saving the file to your “..\..\Temporary Internet Files\Content.Outlook\” location.
To see what Outlook is doing I started a Process Monitor trace,
then dragged a Windows Live Mail EML message with a Word doc attached over to my Outlook 2010 Inbox.
When I open the eml item, I am prompted to Open or Save the item. I opt for Open and the message with attachment is opened with Outlook 2010.
The trace shows accessing the registry to find out what to use to open the EML file and then it shows the attached file being created in
Temporary Internet Files. The attached file is seen,
    but nothing happens to it.

    28:14.1
    OUTLOOK.EXE QueryDirectory   jahawk
    C:\Users\jahawk\Documents\Help me.docx NO SUCH FILE
From the opened EML file, you click File | Save As | And then save the item as an .MSG file.
When you drag the MSG into your Outlook profile’s mail folder, the mail with attachments is visible.
Looking at the mail folder, the EML item does not have a mail icon associated to it. The item shows no Attachment icon, because it cannot be
read in yet. –You’d need to open the EML file in Outlook to view the message with attachment(s).
Looking at the mail folder, the MSG item is an Outlook mail item and the attachments are showing up.
So, let me ask the following:
    How was the item created?
Does this happen with any file that is attached?
In Windows Live Mail, attachments have a lot LESS properties associated to them
Outlook 2010 actually has a PR_ATTACHMENT_HIDDEN property that can toggled to hide an attachment.
What happens from Outlook Web Access? –You will have to right-click “Save Target As” on the attached eml message, first. When you
open the saved “E-mail Message” from the save location, what results?
Is your anti-virus possibly scanning the file? –“..\...\Temporary Internet Files\Outlook.content….”
Anyways, to be honest, I’d have to have a copy of the EML file to be able to (hopefully) explain what is happening.
If I had the file, I would use MFCMapi or OutlookSpy to dump the EML message’s properties after I’ve added it to my mailbox. I’d
then open it and save it as an MSG file type. From there, I’d save the MSG file’s properties off and then compare the 2 sets of properties. And, the item has an Attachment Table that will contain the attached files. Each attachment will have its
    own set of properties.
From an Outlook created message with attachment, you could compare the attachment’s properties to the props on the affected message.
From a Windows Live Mail message with attachment, you could compare the attachment’s properties to the props on the affected message.
For the kind of troubleshooting we'd need to do, I would suggest calling and opening a support incident with us. That would allow us to work with you
at a much deeper level. For a case like this, a debug trace of opening the message from in Outlook 2010 would likely be necessary.
Sorry I didn’t have better information for you.

  • Mail attachments don't work iphone

I have three users who updated their phones to 7.0.4.  After doing so, half of the email attachments don't show up in emails.  Instead, they get a "this message has no content."  It happens with different email senders and different attachment file types (pdf and xls).  One user specifically noted that it happened after updating to 7.0.4.  Two of those users are on iPhone 4S's and another is on a variation of 5.
Any ideas as to what is causing this or how to fix it?
side note: mail attachments on those same problem emails work on the user's Outlook clients as well as Android phones (when tested).

Use Plain Text instead of RTF for message composition and place any attachments below all message text including a signature if one is used.
The Send Windows Friendly Attachments option is designed for only one thing and that is removing the Apple resource fork from an attached file which is invisible from fellow Mac users.

  • Office 2013 invisible windows

I have a strange problem that seems to be occurring randomly but regulary on my computer. It also seems to effect some of my collegues but not to the point it does for me.
The problem is that with my Office 2013 installation I will every once in a while get invisible windows for Office 2013 applications. This means that one or more of my open Office 2013 windows turns invisible and can not be accessed unless first minimized
by right clicking the taskbar icon and then restored/maximized again. Then the window will turn normal again. A side effect of this is also that sometimes the invisible window is the top window making it impossible to click on whatever window seems to be on
top (but actually is under the invisible window).
This applies to all applications in the Office 2013 installation, I have seen the bug for Word, Excel, Outlook (main window, open email conversations, etc), Powerpoint and Access.
The behaviour is similar to what is described in the following (but closed) thread for the preview version but I am using the latest version with the latest updates from Microsoft Update. The difference is that I do not see any connection to closed windows
    as described in this thread.
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/officeitpropreview/thread/fac48ad4-516c-457c-ba89-56f47f465841/
I am using Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013 (Swedish) but I also have Excel 2003/2007/2010 installed. I have never seen this for any of the earlier versions so this is something new for Office 2013.
Anyone have any solution to this?

I've experienced this problem since day 1 of installing office 2013. i don't open attachments as often as some folks might, so that's not where i see the problem. usually one of the office 2013 window will just randomly be invisible when i switch to it.
i'm used to it by now and i know to either alt+space+r or x (resize window, maximize window) and the window will properly repaint/refresh itself. if i know the form is maximized i can also grab the invisible window handle at the top of the screen, drag it
    around, and it repaints itself.
I would think it's an issue with some new window container system office uses, because i see it on outlook, onenote, excel, practically all of them that i use. i use no third-party plug-ins except lync and live meeting, and since they're microsoft products
i don't even consider those as third-party. what comes to mind is the cute new 'customize the look of the office windows' system. i picked the geometric pattern (lol is that bad?).
this is on a dell precision company laptop, windows 7 x64, nvidia graphics card, and office 2013 x32. it may be relevant that dameware is installed and running at all times. i wonder if anyone else with this problem also runs dameware?

  • Do not want attachments embedded - how do I fix this problem?!?!?!

I frequently have to send attachments in my mail messages (jpegs, tiffs, eps). However, every time I send attachments in jpeg, eps and tiff formats the recipient cannot download them. They are either invisible or embedded in the message - which I do NOT want. The only attachments that my clients seem to NOT have problems with are pdf's. How do I fix this problem? For now, whenever I have to send attachments in those formats, I have to switch over to Entourage. It does not make sense that this is a problem, since most designers use macs and have to deal with graphics on a daily basis, I am stunned that Mac is having this issue. I cringe that I have to switch to a Microsoft product in order to send certain e-mails. HELP!!!

Maybe I can make a picture. I don't know if it's possible to send a screen shot in these discussions.
When I receive mail, there is no problem. Attachments that people send me show up in an attachment list at the top of their message, just like in Entourage. I can flip the triangle and see the list of file names in their attachments, and can drag from this list to the location where I want to put a copy of the file. The fact that the image itself shows up at the bottom of the message isn't a problem (and is sometimes a benefit).
But when sending mail, it is very hard for me to compose my message. I can't control the attachments, and can't review the names of the files that I have included just before hitting "send".
Here is the Entourage format, which is what I really want. There is a place to put the attachments where they are independent of the message. I can drag a new attachment to this list any time while writing my message.

pulled in .pst file for outlook but it had been configured to leave attachments on server.
the mail server is no longer online - how do I get the attachments?
I have access to the server but do not want to risk the mail syncing with google and deleting the files on the old mail server.
The export was not done cleanly - now I have to go back to pull from server.
Is there a way to export a users mail with attachments from the server to a folder that can then be imported into regular mail program?

  • Security and file attachments

I've got a form with some scripted buttons for attaching files.
When I set security settings on the form my buttons stop working and I get the following error:
NotAllowedError: Security settings prevent access to this property or method.
The security settings I'm trying to use are:
    Restrict Editing:
    Printing Allowed - high resolution,
Changes Allowed - Filling in form fields and signing...
Enable text access for screen reader...
I've tried setting security in Designer and in Acrobat but not having any luck. Is this able to be done?
The file will also be run through Reader Extensions - I've tried this as well with setting  "Embedded file attachments" turned on but no luck.

It looks really good! I particularly like the last click to agree that highlights null mandatory fields - neat - JB influence. I like the colour scheme, but if it was me I would colour the buttons separately. A green tinge for positive action "attach file", "add milestone" and a red tingle for negative action "delete milestone".
Yeah, having fun with John's script objects.
I've started colouring the +/- buttons on other forms, I think it works quite well as well. Definitely want to get into using more colour for feedback. We're trying to get into using more colour in general with some of the old print forms we're converting. I kind of like using coloured backgrounds with white fields.
Also just a few points (I hope you don't mind). I would underline Program Guide and have an invisible button over it with the full url for the guide. That way people don't land on the home page an have to find it. The url is probably too long to have written out on the form. I think some tooltips would help guide the user through the form (particurarly some of the technical stuff) and this would also get rid of the object names. It is personal preference but Caroline Jarrett's book "Forms That Work" would shy away from all caps.
Good idea on the url - I'd meant to do something with that but nobody seemed to notice. They opted for supplying a guide vs tooltips and/or popup help...I'd meant to run through it and nuke the field name tooltips but didn't get time - ah well.
We just got that book but I haven't had a chance to read it yet.
Maybe the script could count the number of attachments and if the min. is not present, also throw up an alert.
Good idea - I was trying to figure out the best way to check for the file attachments, but they decided there was the possibility that people might supply some information under separate cover - same reason we didn't make the expanding tables scripted mandatory, in case they left an extra row in or something.
I wish I had another week to work on it but it's live now!

  • Exchange 2013 - Attachments in *.EML files missing in non-cached mode

    Hello
Our client recently upgraded from Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2013. Since the migration they have had issues with an archiving system they use. Bascially the archiving system creates .eml files of journaled emails.
The issue our client has is when Outlook is running in non-cached exchange mode any attachments within these .eml files are missing when the eml file is opened. If they change to cached mode the attachments show up fine.
It's almost identical to the following issue I found while browsing the net:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/b9a390a9-e014-4098-ad6e-dd377a53422a/office-2010-exchange-2010-attachments-in-emlemails-are-invisible?forum=outlook
Aside from the Exchange version this is exactly what is happening for our client. Is anyone aware of whether the same issue fixed in Rollup update 5 for Exch 2010 SP1 is still present in Exchange 2013?
Our client has already said they don't want everyone using cached exchange so I can't tell them that. Is there a way to manually fix the issue or are we going to have to move back to Exchange 2010 while a patch is sent out? Does anyone know exactly what
    the issue is?
    Many thanks in advance.

    Hi,
I know there was this issue with Exchange 2010, but haven't noticed the same issue in Exchange 2013. The suggestion would be to keep Exchange fully updated - It seems you have done so.
I'm not sure when SP1 will be released, you may post this question to Exchange forum since it may be more related:

  • Image attachments cannot be extracted by recipient

I'm having a problem whereby when I add an image to an e-mail – and the image shows in the body of the e-mail rather than as an icon – in a number of instances the recipient (Windows users) cannot drag the image out of the e-mail.
Is this a common problem (I can't find a reference to it in earlier posts) and is there a solution?
    Regards

Using the Send Windows Friendly Attachments feature with Mail removes the Apple resource fork from attached files only which is invisible to fellow Mac users.
The Mail.app displays all image/photo and single page PDF attachments inline or viewed in place within the body of the message by default which cannot be turned off. Depending on the recipient's email client and available preference settings, such attachments may appear inline or viewed in place within the body of the message when the message is opened by the recipient (as with the Mail.app when receiving such attachments) or as attached files only which must be opened separately to be viewed for which the sender has no control over.
The reverse is true. Windows Outlook and Outlook express display all attachments as icons in an attachments window but when sending image/photo or single page PDF attachments to a Mail.app user, such attachments will appear inline or viewed in place when the message is opened.
Are you using RTF or Plain Text for message composition and are you also including a Signature with your messages?
RTF with Tiger Mail is really HTML and since this doesn't occur with all recipients, it probably primarily occurs with Windows Outlook users. Depending on the version used by a recipient, Windows Outlook can have problems with Mail's RTF.
If you are using RTF for message composition, try using Plain Text instead and if you are also using a Signature, be sure to place the Signature below all message text and add any attachments below all text including a Signature.

  • Mail v 1.2.5 and pc friendly attachments

This question is in regard to my wife's computer. She uses OS 10.2.8 with mac mail version 1.2.5. With this operating system and mac mail version, how do you select to send the attachment as windows or pc friendly?
I have been through many posts and I get the feeling there is a way to activate this setting but for the life of me I don't see how to do it.
When the option to attach something is selected, either via a pull down menu or clicking on the icon, no place do I see a choice to make it a windows friendly attachment. I don't see this choice in the edit pull down window or when you actually choose the attachmetnt to open, there does not appear to be a way to select to send the attachment as windows friendly.
    What am I missing?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    yoak

I believe the send Windows Friendly option became
available with Panther Mail and is not available with
    Jaguar Mail.
Are some Windows recipients having problems with
    attachments sent by your wife?
The only thing this option resolves is removing the
Apple resource fork for an attached file which is
invisible to fellow Mac users. This isn't an issue
for all Windows users since it depends on the Windows
version and the email client and version used by the
    recipient.
    Alan,
There have been a variety of issues with windows users. Basically, all the usual suspects.. double attachments, attachments that can't be opened. At this stage of the game, after reading the forums, I am learning there are a variety of possible problems sending attachments to windows users.
At this juncture, I was just wondering if I was missing something with the 1.2.5 v of mac mail and the send windows friendly option. Apparently, that is not an option in the 1.2.5 v of mac mail. I'm glad to know that so I can quit driving my self crazy looking for a non existant option.
I believe our problems will be reduced when I upgrade her computer to 10.4.4 in a month or so. In 10.4.4 as I understand it, there is an option to send windows friendly attachments.
Thanks for you input and help.
    Respectfully,
    yoak

  • Missing attachments

Anyone heard of this problem - I received an email that had two two gifs and a word document. The word document was invisible in the body of the email, but when I hit the arrowhead next to the paperclip, it is in the list and I can save it. Here is one explanation I have had.
Mac Mail sees two lists of attachments, the "related" and the
real attachment(s) (here the Word doc) and only processes the first list by
default. It is likely that the recipient hasn't encountered the problem, or not often, before because most emails are sent with either attachments or embedded images, but not both.

Whilst they did not show in the email, they were under the attachment arrow. Not sure why they did not show.
