Invisible bookmarks

I'm using FF 26.0 under Windows 7 SP1. Due to a HD crash, I've had to reinstall Windows and Firefox. I copied across the following files from my old FF profile, backed up on an external HD, to the new FF profile:
places.sqlite
key3.db
signons.sqlite
My problem is that I can't see any of the bookmarks using Ctrl-B or Show all Bookmarks - the list is empty. The unusual thing is that the bookmarks are definitely there, because if I start typing a bookmark name in the address bar the bookmark URL will appear. So can anyone tell me why this is happening, and how I can view and edit my bookmarks list again?
I've reset FF, overwritten the localstore.rdf in case the new version was corrupt, and searched for "bookmarks missing" and similar.
This is sort of related to the questions I've already asked about synching to one machine, which I think are visible under my profile.
Cheers
Fred

Hi Fred, I use the SQLite Manager extension to peer into Firefox's SQLite databases. If you find a database diagram or other documentation showing the purpose of all those fields and the relationship of the tables, I'd love to see it.

  • Bookmarks not showing in menu dropdown but still are in url line. When doing the restore feature, it says 807 items but nothing shows up still after.

Earlier today my bookmarks were there. Later tonight, not there.
I've tried the whole restore bookmarks process, I've copied the folder and deleted the places file thing. None of that has worked.
What's weird is if I type something in in the URL box that I know is in my bookmarks, it will show up like it's in the history. But nothing shows up in my bookmarks folder at all.
I need some help on this as I've tried almost every way I've read and nothing has brought them up. And like I said in the title, I have over 800 bookmarks and a lot of them are work related.

Another user had a similar problem a couple of days ago, but was fortunate to have a backup of places.sqlite to restore. See: [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/981306 Invisible bookmarks].
When you deleted places.sqlite file and Firefox regenerated your database, it presumably used the most recent backup. I wonder whether the most recent backup contains the same mysterious corruption. Do you want to try recovering from the next older one?
In your profile folder, after exiting Firefox, open the bookmarkbackups folder and move the most recent JSON backup file(s), anything from today, to a safe location (e.g., your Documents folder). Then go back up a level and rename places.sqlite to something like places.wtf.
''Note: if Windows does not display these file extensions, turn on viewing of file extensions to ensure that you can work with similarly named files accurately. This article has the steps: [http://support.microsoft.com/kb/865219].''
When you start Firefox, it should rebuild the places database again, this time with that older backup. Any difference?

  • Bookmark folder drop down menu disappears

While using Firefox as of late, I've noticed a few things out of place.
Firstly, while browsing the web I tend to store a lot of bookmarks; recently while attempting to store new bookmarks in folders on the bookmark toolbar, as I drag the page to be stored as a bookmark the folder's drop down menu disappears. It's still possible to drop the bookmark into the folder, which then in turn makes it fall to the bottom of the list automatically; however, there are organized folders inside of folders so it's rather counterproductive.
The same thing happens when just clicking on a folder, the menu simply doesn't show up yet the "invisible" bookmarks may be interacted with by clicking on them -albeit randomly. After a few attempts, the menu will eventually appear but not always the first attempt. Quite frustrating.
Also, the memory used by Firefox seems a bit high; especially when opening various new tabs.
What should be done about this issue?

    (1) Find (or create) the chrome folder. This is a folder in your currently active Firefox settings folder, also known as your Firefox profile folder.
Open the your profile folder using: Help > Troubleshooting Information
Windows: Click the Show Folder button
Mac: Click the Show in Finder button
    Check for a chrome folder.
If it exists, double-click it to open it.
If it does not exist, create a chrome folder, then double-click it to open it.
    (2) Create or Edit a userChrome.css file by adding a bookmark button rule.
Check for a userChrome.css file in the chrome folder.
If it exists, open it in a text editor and add the following lines, then save:
/* Force bookmark drop-down button display even with classic menu bar */
    #bookmarks-menu-button {display:-moz-box !important}
If it does not exist, right-click the following link > Save Link As, and save into your chrome folder (or save in Downloads and drag to your chrome folder): http://www.jeffersonscher.com/res/userChrome-bookmarksbutton.css.
Then rename the file to userChrome.css.

  • When I add a bookmark to a folder, it is not visible, but it is there

I have this problem in my FIREFOX toolbar.
I have a very large set of bookmarks in a drop-down list under a folder called Daily. I have added a folder in that drop down list called Dollar, to keep the whole list short enough to fit in the window. I added four bookmarks to that Dollar folder successfully, but when I tried to add a fifth, it did not show up. I tried that three times. No luck. Then I clicked Open all in Tabs under the four. Seven tabs opened - the four I can see and the one I could not, three times.
When I look at that folder in Organize Bookmarks, I can see all seven, but not when I go there from my Bookmark toolbar.
How can I make the three invisible bookmarks visible?

If you use the 'bookmarks' menu you will get arrowheads pointing off to one side that show folders content.
Once the list has grown long you will also get very small arrowheads at the top and bottom of the list, which grey out sometimes, these will allow you to scroll up or down to see items that are otherwise off screen.

  • I cannot see my bookmarks toolbar - the gap is there for it and it is ticked in View and shows in Booksmarks drop-down menu but is invisible (or gone so far to left that it can't be got at), I think it happened after I added eBay sidebar for Firefox.

Any help welcome. I have tried just re-starting Firefox and I have tried adding bookmarks to it, but still can't see it.

This issue can also be caused by a missing "Bookmarks Toolbar items" on the Bookmarks Toolbar.
    * Make sure that you have the "Bookmarks Toolbar" visible: "View > Toolbars"
    * Check in "View > Toolbars > Customize" that the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
    * If the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the Customize window onto the Bookmarks Toolbar
    * If you do not see the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" then click the "Restore Default Set" button

  • Why are my separators invisible in Bookmarks, but visible in "Organize.."

Just installed FF 3.6.3 on new W7HomeP PC, exported Bookmarks as HTML from old W2KPC, imported as HTML. Bookmark separators are visible in FF on old PC, but in new installation, bookmarks pane is white background and there are no separators, but the items are spaced slightly apart where seps. should be. In the "Organize Bookmarks" pane, seps are all there visible. Default theme in use. What's wrong?

    Try a different Windows Theme.

  • Why are my bookmarks becoming invisible?

Ever since I downloaded the latest version of Firefox, I've been having display issues with my bookmarks toolbar. • Bookmarks are lost and address/search bar is nonfunctional due to non exisistant corrupt

Firefox unexpectedly updated itself and upon doing so, lost all of my bookmarks. Also, when a new browser window opens, three windows open: the welcome window, the start page and the invisible hand page. Every time, as if I have just Firefox every time. Also, the address and search bar don't work. I can search through the Google search on the start page, but the search on the header is no longer functional.
I have tried to start the page in the safe mode to no avail. I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it to no avail.

This can be a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • When saving a PDF from a FrameMaker book, is it possible to set document filenames as bookmarks in the PDF?

When saving a PDF from a FrameMaker book, is it possible to set document filenames as bookmarks in the PDF? Currently when I have a Framemaker book that I want to save as a PDF, I choose Save Book As and then choose PDF for the file format. A dialog box comes up in which I can choose the Bookmarks tab and choose which tagged content I want to be made into bookmarks in the PDF file. What if I would rather have the filename of a document rather than the chapter title be a bookmark in the PDF? Is that possible? Where would I choose that option? Thanks!

There are two ways that you could do this. You can either use postscript text frames and enter the correct pdfmark entries to show the file name with the corresponding actions (i.e. where to go in the PDF) or you can use hidden text in FM and the "Filename (Short) " variable in a unique paratag to be picked up by FM's bookmark creation.
To go the pdfmark route, see http://www.pdflib.com/fileadmin/pdflib/pdf/pdfmark_primer.pdf for details and also consult the Adobe Pdfmark Reference manual (http://www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/devnet/acrobat/pdfs/pdfmark_reference.pdf).
The hidden text route would use FM's Color Views to specify a colour as Invisible. This will make the content visually disappear from the screen (and any output), but FM will still be able to read the contents of any text that is coloured with the Invisible colour(s).
    1. Pick or create a colour that you want to be invisible. [Magenta is usually a good bet and stands out visually].
    2. Set that colour to be invisible in View 1 and visible in View 6. [you can use the shortcut <esc> v 1 and <esc> v 6 to toggle between the views.]
    3. Create a paratag to use for the filename and set the font colour to use the invisible colour.
    3. In the title of each chapter file, drop an anchored frame that is set to be outside of the text frame [so it won't interfere with any other content].
    4. In that AFrame, insert a text frame and use the invisible paratag defined in step 3.
    5. Insert the Filename (Short) variable in that text frame.
    6. Repeat steps for all files to be included in the bookmarks.
When creating the PDF bookmarks, select only the paratag used for the invisible colour.
Don't forget to toggle the View to be invisible (i.e. <esc> v 1  - this also works at the book level for all files in the book).

  • Icons in menu bar and standard menus are invisible!

    I'm having an issue with OS X 10.8.2 on my 15" (not Retina) Macbook Pro (late 2011, Core i7 2.4 GHz w/ 16GB RAM and SSD);
The majority of system icons in the menu bar "extras" area (that is, to the right near the date/time in the menu bar) are blank. The area where the icon would be located is responsive to clicks, and drops a menu item down upon click, but the icons themselves are invisible. The same goes for Spotlight which has a spot for it's icon and responds to the hotkey of Apple + Spacebar, but the icon itself is invisible. The only icons that are visible are third party programs that run and place themselves there such as Little Snitch, and the battery low ("red" battery) indicator icon; other battery icons are invisible.
Also invisible/blank are the icons for going back and forward in a Finder window as well as the back/forward icons in System Preferences sub-dialogs. The icons for choosing labels, changing the way Finder windows display (their view options), and a few others that I cannot name as I cannot see them are invisible as well. Icons that would normally display to the left of "All My Files", "AirDrop", "Applications", "Desktop", et cetera in the Finder window do not display, either.
I have tried installing the 10.8.2 Combo Update and using the Disk Utility "Repair" and "Verify" Filesystem options but neither fixed the issue. I have tried deleting the cached plist files for the SystemUIServer as well but there was no change in the icon display (or, that is, lack of display!).
I am running Mac OS X 10.8.2 (including the Combined Update) on the late-2011 Macbook Pro 15" w/ 2.4 GHz Core i7 (default 4GB memory and 750gb HDD; upgraded to 16GB of RAM and a Crucial M4 256GB SSD). I cannot recall if the problem started after I updated any system software or not; I upgraded to 10.8.2 via buying OS X Mountain Lion from the App Store so that I would have a copy on USB to install after replacing my HDD with my SSD. Everything worked fine on fresh installation, and I am not sure at what point the icons disappeared.
Does anyone have any insight into this problem, and more importantly, how to correct it? Please see the screenshots below for a proper illustration of the problem I am experiencing. The sole icon visible, with the two columns, is Little Snitch 3.0.
^-- Clicking the menu bar battery icon (except, there is no icon!)
^-- Finder window with the icons for back/forward, view options, icons for location list items on the left, etc. missing
^-- System Preferences dialog, with icons for the back/forward function missing.
^-- Help window with the icons for back/forward and some other function missing.
    Thank you in advance!

I have a similar issue. When the computer goes into "Hibernate" mode -- that is, it loses power while sleeping and it writes the contents of it's memory to disk in order to boot into that exact configuration when woken up -- many of my icons when Apple-Tab'ing to another application appear as static. They look like a slightly colorized version of the "static snow" you see when tuning into a station that doesn't exist on a UHF antenna television. Also, icons in Chrome such as web sites "favorite icons" or favicon.ico (the icons that appear in the URL bar and bookmarks) will be scrambled in the same fashion , at first , until the actual icon is loaded.
Between this, my menu bar and finder icons not displaying, and being unable to boot into safe mode, I'm getting quite ******. I have no idea what the **** is going on with my Macbook Pro. The issue of the scrambled icons actually existed prior to installing an SSD and doing a fresh install of Mountain Lion. I may end up throwing in the towl and re-installing the operating system but I'm sure SOMETHING will happen. It seems the latest update, 10.8.2, is absolute garbage.
What the ****, Apple? And I really don't want to take the computer to the morons at the Apple Store. They are not "geniuses" by any measure.

  • TOC and Cross reference bookmarks

Hi. I recently finished work on a book that had front matter containing a brief TOC and a detailed TOC. The book also contained individual TOCs at the beginning of each chapter.
I updated all numbering across the book files before generating the TOCs in the front matter, then generated the brief and detailed TOCs using my TOC Styles. However, I assigned cross references for the individual chapter TOCs. May not have been the best choice.
Because there was special styling for some of the front matter TOC entries that wasn't easily specified using just the TOC Styles, I cut and pasted groups of entries from the generated TOC on the pasteboard into a new frame on the page. I checked in Story Editor to ensure that the invisible markers for the TOC entries had been copied into the new frame.
When I exported the files to PDF, the TOC entries no longer pointed to the correct pages. They simply pointed to the first page of the PDF when clicked. Furthermore, no bookmarks showed up the TOC entries in the Bookmarks panel, even though I had "Create PDF Bookmarks" checked in my TOC Styles.
    I have three questions, then:
--Is there any way to reclaim the behavior of the TOC bookmarks, and their display in the Bookmarks list of the PDF, if the entries are copied and pasted into a new frame in InDesign, without doing this manually in Acrobat Pro?
--Is there any way to get cross references to display as bookmarks in a PDF, assuming that I needed to make individual PDFs of each chapter, without doing this manually in Acrobat Pro?
--I'm betting that all files should be exported from InDesign as a single PDF in order for all TOC and cross reference links to work properly, without manual intervention in Acrobat Pro? If so, and manual intervention is required, is this accomplished by cataloging/indexing in Acrobat Pro?
I need to be able to pass this information along to a publisher who is now requiring all of their compositors to submit bookmarked PDFs with their printer files. I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this one, but I would like verification from the pros here. Thanks!

  • Three invisible volumes eating up disk space

I used Carbon Copy Cloner to load up a new external drive with the contents of my MBP. After it finished my Users folder it began copying "Volumes / LaCie 500GB."
It wouldn't show up in Finder, so I presumed it was an invisible file, as best I understand it. I ran GrandPerspective to get a multicolor image depicting the relative sizes of all files hierarchically. It displayed clearly not just that LaCie, but two others as well. The three volumes use up some 85GB — a third of my drive.
I've confirmed that the contents are all duplicates (and triplicates) of various parts of my main drive. It seems evident that I can just delete them, but I'd like to know of any cautions anyone may know.
And what might I have done to copy the same external onto my MBP — three times? OR what other process might make that happen? I have CCC scheduled to back up my MBP onto the LaCie, but not back the other way.
    Thanks.

    WZZZ wrote:
Why this would have happened three times is certainly something to investigate. Is the LaCie mounting properly otherwise?
Now that I've read the page through more completely, I find that the last paragraph on that page evidently wraps it all up:
"...you must ensure that the target will remain available throughout the cloning so that you don't have to do this clearing up too often!"
This brings to mind that occasionally one of my FW cables to this drive gets bumped and disconnects. Not good, I know. But I'd bet this is what's caused it. I have the page bookmarked and now I'll know where to return.

Thanks to the-edmeister and cor-el, for speed of response. I had not inadvertently moved the Bookmarks-Toolbar : I was confronted with the situation right after Firefox 9 had installed and unfolded in front of me. At first, the toolbar area looked reassuringly familiar, but when I started normal work, I discovered the lack of tabs and the only reference I could see to TABS was a tiny button inviting me to group tabs (which was unhelpful to say the least, filling up the screen with tiny unreadable windows). Sure, there were tabs forming, but they were invisible, unless I used the group button. Eventually, I was brave enough to use "reset toolbars" and the tabs came back in the way I want them, but it was a traumatic 2-3 hours out of my life. I kept on "adding a new toolbar" to see if I could make use of it; I kept giving them names, but it is impossible to see where the new tool bar is! (the toolbars don't have a little bit to grab at one end). In my opinion, Firefox should not have allowed the Tab Bar and the Bookmarks Toolbar to become caught up with each other - they have completely different functions. I don't think I would like to play around with "Make a new profile"! I was so desperate that I have already downloaded version 3.6 again, ready to install, for if I was unable to resolve the version 9 problems above.
