Invisible "file" in trash?

Hey there,
So for the last couple of weeks I have had a "file" in my trash that won't delete. Its not a huge deal, I just want to try an figure out what it is/how it got there/how to get rid of it. The trash info says that there is one item that is taking up no space. I have tried Option-deleting the trash, verifying/repairing permission and verifying the disk to make sure that there wasn't an issue that could be fixed. Thus, I'm not really sure what my next step should be, should I start up in safe mode and try to delete the file that way? I have an external hd and a windows partition and I'm not sure if these might have any relation. I don't remember placing any system files in the trash either. Sorry if this has been asked before, but I couldn't find any info when I searched. Thanks for any and all help.
-John

Does it say the file is locked or what?

  • How can I remove a doubly-invisible file?

My external drive has a 28GB invisible file on it called "Volume Catalog Info". The finder says the disk is full, but won't reveal the file, even with all files made visible.
The way I found the monster file was using DiskSurveyor 2.5 under Classic. I'd think it was imagining things, except that the Finder agrees that the disk is full. My 2 folders on the drive (no system files) add up to the same 28GB short of the size of the disk. I made all files visible using Terminal ("defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles 1") but besides the 2 folders mentined, there's nothing new shown of any size, only the following: Desktop DB 16KB, .DS_Store 8KB .TemporaryItems folder 8KB, Desktop DF 4KB, and .Spotlight-V100, .Trashes, Desktop, and Desktop Folder, all at Zero KB.
Since Terminal doesn't reveal the file either, how can I remove it?
    Thanks!

I appreciate the help and think this may have been a case of operator error. In searching the web I found someone with the same problem, but I now think I had the wrong idea of my actual disk size! So DiskSurveyor showed this mega-file, but just as a side-effect of its being an OS9 program. No mega-file, nothing to delete, red face.

  • A strange ghost file in Trash which can not be erased? Any help?

A strange doc in Trash -named  ¨ð?, ïÖó.l—s
    - resides in the trash bin
    -is alias
    -size zero Kb
-can not be moved opened or deleted
-no created or modified dates on display
in info   window tells me  that it's file with unknown access.
It doesn't cause any visible harm I just want to find out how this file appeared and how to get rid of it.
-when did search for invisible files
found it in Bootcamp>.Trashes>  501 which is a folder, empty.
(The Bootcamp partition is empty, I created it when purchased the laptop just in case I install Windows someday. When I open it there is just empty Desktop folder ,size  zero Kb)
Here it gets weird with this 501 folder - on the finder window  is displayed  that  it is  created on 27 April 2025 at 7.33pm.
Now is the year 2011,  so how a folder can be created in the year 2025???
It gets even funnier with the dates - when  I go right click>Get Info, on display I see that this folder is created Sat, 20 August 1983 10:12 AM (!!!!!!
and modified on 27 April 2025 at 7.33pm.
Tried to move it to Trash  -  the “Preparing to move to trash” animated bar appears, keeps moving forever but no result at all.
Any help with deleting this ghost file (without reinstalling whole system)?
    My Mac has OSX 10.6.8
    Thanks for any help,everyone!

  • Invisible File Deletion?

Does "secure empty trash" permanently delete invisible files?

Only if they are in fact there.   However, I would not be so anxious to delete invisible files.  Many support system operations and are invisible for a reason.  Clone backup your system just in case you are deleting something essential.

  • Cannot move files to trash; they are deleted immediately!

I can no longer move files to trash and then empty the trash. If I select "move to trash" or drag a file to the trash, I am notified that the file will be deleted immediatley.
How can I change it so that the files remain in the trash until I choose to empty it.
Also, I have gone to "get info" for the trash, and when I try to give myself permission to read & write, I am prompted to give my password, which I do, but then it says "operation could not be completed ... unexptected error, code 136.
    Any ideas.
    Please help.

That message is typical behavior when deleting files from a server, but I suspect your problem isn't going to be answered with that. What do you mean when you say "I try to give myself permission to read & write" for the Trash? Your Trash can is normally an invisible folder called ".Trashes". And by default it should be read and write.

  • Computer Hangs moving file to trash

While moving a file to trash, nothing happened, indicator just spins.  Hit cancel button, and indicates computer is stopping deletion, however has been doing it for 20 min.  Computer won't let me restart / shut down computer.  Any ideas?

If you can still navigate with your mouse...
Go to /Applications /Utilities/Terminal and launch it.
At the prompt, copy and paste this command
    sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash
    Press Return.
You will be asked to enter your admin password. It will be invisible.
    Enter it and press Return.
Log out and back in or restart.

I created a new admin, same result. sudo bash has given me back use of the terminal but how do I get it back to normal, any ideas?

There are two kinds of "invisible" files and folders - those items whose names begin with a period, and those items which carry a "hidden" flag. Both are normally invisible to Finder, though Finder can be enabled to see them both. Terminal's ls command requires the -a option in order to see items with names that begin with a period, but does not need the -a option to see items that carry the "hidden" flag.
Are you looking for something specific? You listed the contents of your home folder, which doesn't normally contain any executable system files, and doesn't normally contain any items which are invisible because of the "hidden" flag. The home folder does contain a few items with names beginning with a period, which you would be able to see if you use *ls -la*. Of these, the .Trash folder is probably the only item that is of practical interest.
There are invisible system files and folders at the root level of your startup volume. If you want to see all of these, you can use
    ls -la /
Even without the -a option, the command
    ls -l /
    will show those hidden system items that are of most practical interest (/Volumes, /bin, /etc, /private, /sbin, /tmp, /usr, /var )

  • Invisible files, which application open those?

    Hi,
On my old iMac DV SE with OS 9.1 I was wandering with which application can I open an invisible file? For instance I found a stange file in my Preferences Folder and I knew for sure that it was not useful, actually it seem suspect to me, so I was curious to take a look inside that thing but ResEdit can not open it because obviously there is no ressources in. What was those "old" applications used to take a deepler look in some files like that in OS 9 ? Those files have a white blank page icon with a folden corner, and they are not from Windows world.
    Thank's
    Jacques
iMac DV SE 500   Mac OS 9.1.x

I have had the same happen several times. More in the past year due to spyware perhaps and attempted viruses. Thank God for the Mac! I too would like to know which software and version will work on the OS9 to read all these. I've lost and cannot find "file buddy" and want to know what other s/w is around, where to download too. What you should do as with any suspect file on these good ole Macs is to remove the file, "duplicate" a copy for backup , compress it if you dave disk doubler, stuffit, and place it outside the system folder, mac HD icon/folder and into a new folder.(mine is named "pre-trash") If you have another HD installed drag & copy them to that drive. Restart the computer and check your s/w, especially browsers (IE 5.1.7 especially). Most of the pref's actually opened with the browser. Every one I have found was trashed as it was "junk". If the file is used or needed you will soon know when you open s/w and also check to see if a new file was created. The Mac being the genious that it is will create a new preference if its needed and if so, drag the old one saved in "pre-trash" back and your settings are saved. Just a few steps for that peace of mind and no harm, no foul. I hope this helps. This was taught to me way back in 1995, so it applies to almost anything you have on your computer. Anyone reading: If you know of s/w availble still for OS9 please provide the info. Thanks.

  • Unable to delete file from trash because it's "in use" not locked.

I'm unable to delete a file from trash. I keep getting the following message: "The operation can’t be completed because the item is in use."  I've confirmed the file isn't locked and I've tried renaming it but still no luck. I'm running OSX 10.8.4. Any thoughts?

Check the 'More Like This' discussions on the right hand column.  I suspect you may find the answer there.

  • Deleting files from trash folder 10.9.2

I recently updated to 10.9.2. Nothing seemed to have changed but the trash folder is acting funny. Now I am not able to delete any file from the trash. I select empty trash securely and then the dialog box displaying the number of files to be deleted appears and disappears in 1-2 seconds and the file/s dont get deleted.
Is there a way out of this?
    Cheers!

    A Espinoza,
The iTunes Media folder is set in Preferences > Advanced, and is the key to most iTunes folder organizational activities.  So I doubt that the automatic deletion will work for files that are somewhere else within the folder structure.
However, I have not experimented with that issue in quite a while, so you are welcome to give it a try in iTunes 11.

  • How do I remove a file to trash from my desktop? when I drag to trash it says I cannot delete

I'm a seasoned iMac user but forgot from the "old days" how to delete a file to trash from the desktop when it says "The item ......can't be moved to the Trash because it can't be deleted". This is a file I downloaded a few days ago. Can you help, please?

Thank you for answering- I must have posted the question twice. Another helpful person helped me solve it. I have to shake my head at my dumb self.....all I needed to do was restart the machine and the file disappeared. A total "duh" moment for this "seasoned" Mac user. Again, thanks for answering.

I have tried reseting to factory settings by removing battery and holding down the power switch for more than 5 sec but this does nothing.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as I think with so much unwanted data on the desktop and other places the whole os will crash very soon.
    Thanks, Rick

The hard drive may be dying anyway, or the directory damaged because it is so full.  You should never let the hard drive get over 85% full.
    A -36 error is a read/write error.
All you did with the power is reset the SMC.  Does nothing to reset everything to factory settings.
Do you have your original 10.4 installer discs for the MacBook?

  • Delete only one file from Trash

    Hello There,
I do not want to empty my entire Trash folder but only some files which i know I am not going to use it. Is there a way to delete only selected files and not just empty trash...
Thanks in advance for the help..
    NA

    nAyer,
When I place files in the Trash, I expect that they will be deleted. IMHO Trash is not a good place to store files that I may have second thoughts about eliminating.
I have created a folder which I named "B4 Trash," and placed it on my Desktop. If I really want to throw something away, I put it in the Trash and empty the Trash. If I am not sure about deletion, I place it in B4 Trash and get rid of it at my leisure.
Why not drag all of the files in Trash to a folder you create on your Desktop called B4 Trash, and then drag the files you really want to get rid of back to the Trash. Then empty the Trash.
    ;~)
