Invisible files--can't delete

OS 10.7.5
We are a commercial print shop. In the Finder, I have created a saved search that located all the .ps (postscript files) in a certain folder. Works great. However, this search (and a manual search like it) includes, in the results, two postscript files that were supposedly deleted months ago (intentionally). The files are no longer in this folder (or anywhere on our network) yet these files still show up in the search results window (and only in the search results window).
The icons of these 'ghost' files are blank (just white pages)
I can select the file and 'Get Info' them. They have a file size, creation and modification dates, but no location.
If I start Terminal and do 'ls" for the folder that I originally searched, these files do not show up in the resulting list.
If I start Terminal, type 'rm' and attempt to drag these files onto the terminal window out of the Finder search results window, nothing happens. I can't drag the files anywhere, in fact. I click and hold, the icon will not come with my mouse. I can click the files, but they cannot be dragged anywhere. "Legitimate" files in search results windows can be dragged (even in the same search result window containing my ghost files)
If I search for these files by name (instead of .ps extension) they show up in the search window, along with a bunch of other 'ghost' files of types: PDF, .ps, .INDD, .psd, etc and a number of other Adobe CS6-related file extenions. It's one project that seems to have gone 'ghosty' on me.
These files seem to be 'stuck' in this neverland and I can't get at them to delete them. I can't seem to use Terminal to get at them because they don't have a location. I have repaired permissions.
They are not ruining anything, it's just a nuisance to have them constantly coming up in the search result window and having to ignore them.
Any suggestions?

I'm trying to delete some files and I get the following message, "Emptying the Trash cannot be completed because "weezeerbeverlyucv(1).mpeg" is locked. To empty everything in the Trash, including locked items, press the Option key while selecting Empty Trash."
I've tried this a dozen different ways and it won't work. I get the same error message. I've tried the Option key (on either side and together), the command key, delete and various combinations therein -- it's still in the trash.
Any suggestions?
Cheers,
It most likely means that you do not own the file in question.
Open the trash and drag the file onto the desktop.
Run disk utility and repair permissions -
Now see if you can trash it permanently.
There are other ways, but this is a simple way.
Another way is while the file is on the desktop, right-click it and select "Get Info"
In the Get Info window, near the bottom you will see Sharing & Permissions
Be sure that you have read and write on that file. From what you describe, you do not.
Change the permissions on the file to read and write (you will have to unlock the lock at the bottom right) and you should be able to trash the file.
While the file is on your desktop, you can enter the terminal and delete it, but only if neither of the above processes work.

Also delete your cookies and other web data, as it can build up and you don't really need that stuff.
Try going to to Go in the finder menu, Go to Folder, Type in ~/Library/ click Go and look around and see what you don't need and highlight and delete the junk.

If I convert  PDF file to a Microsoft Word file can I delete pictures from the converted file?

    Hi sutterrot,
After a successful conversion from PDF to Word, you need to download the converted file locally on your computer.
You can then choose 'Enable Editing' button and then delete images/text or make other changes.

    Hi,
    Please check
    1) whether you have sufficient permissions on the folder to delete the file.
    2) Also check the Processing mode parameter

  • How to know a priori if a file can be deleted?

My application requires that a collection of files be deleted. I currently loop through an array of File objects to be deleted, and invoke the delete() method on each object, i.e.
    for (int i=0; i<collection_of_files.length; i++) {
    returnval = collections_of_files.delete();
Problem: If one or more of the files has a "lock" on it, such as in Windows when some other process may be accessing the file, then those files can not be deleted, and returnval = false. How could I know before deleting ~any~ files in the collection, if some of the files can not be deleted? I would prefer not to actually delete any of the files in the collection, if one or more files can not be deleted because of a lock or any other reason. I have tried using SecurityManager to perform this a priori check on the deletability of a file, but no luck! Please advise.
    thanks,
    Ed

It tries to delete a temp file that doesn't exist, so
it doesn't delete anything in fact.Yes, the statement tempFile.delete() is not actually needed in the function isFileInUse. Other than that, the function isFileInUse does serve its purpose -- it determines true or false if there is a lock on a file. It does so by trying to rename the source file. If it can rename the source file, then we know there is no external lock on that file, and the function renames it back to what it was and returns false. This is a little tricky, but it works great. However, you would think there is a better way.
It was suggested also to try using the java.nio.filechannels.FileChannel class, which may be the proper way to go, but I haven't tried it yet. In particular, the method FileChannel.tryLock() returns "null if the lock could not be acquired because another program holds an overlapping lock."

  • No space.  Two sparsebundle files--can I delete one?

There are two Macbooks backing up a Time Capsule on our wireless network.  My mother noticed an error message on her laptop saying there's not enough space for Time Machine to perform a back up.  I took a look at the Time Capsule, and sure enough, there's only 8 gigs left, even though in theory there should be plenty of space.  (By my estimation maybe 100 gigs or so.)
I scanned my Time Capsule with GrandPerspective and noticed that my laptop has two sparsebundle files on the Time Capsule.  One hasn't been updated since March.  The only thing I can think of is that In the Spring I changed settings in Time Machine to back up a folder I hadn't backed up before.  The other sparsebundle file is current to today.
Can I somehow get rid of the older one without causing too much trouble?
    Thank you!

If you don't plan to access any of the data on the older "sparsebundle" file, I'd delete it.  That will probably take a few minutes.

  • HT201250 After Time Machine has backed up my files, can I delete my originals from my Mac and do something in Time Machine to ensure it will never automatically delete them from the backup in the future?

I'm new to using Time Machine - I'm making my first backup right now - and I have a few concerns.
So let's say my precious photos are taking up most of my Mac's hard drive space. I back them up with Time Machine on an external hard drive. After that, I want to delete my photos from my Mac because I want more space and my photos are now stored in the external hard drive. I have a few questions about that.
First, does Time Machine's backup system follow the same concept as having extra storage (so would this be a reasonable decision to make)?
Second, if it does, then could I access/open these photos from Time Machine's backup anytime I want?
Third, would I need to use the restore backup function of Time Machine every time I want to open my photos are there alternative ways of accessing my photos, like through opening directory paths to the photos?
Lastly, when the external hard drive becomes full and Time Machine wants to delete my oldest backup files, what can I do to ensure that these photos will never get deleted unless I manually do it? Like, is there a way to lock and secure these files? Or, is it like if these photos are the only copies saved in the backup, I can rest assure that Time Machine will never delete them?
    Thanks

Since my new external hard drive is have a lot of space, I'm thinking of splitting it for Time Machine and external storage.
This is a common mistake and I highly advise against it.
1: TimeMachine saves states of changes and thus requires more room on the TM drive than the boot drive it's backing up.
2: Something happens to the TM drive, loss, theft, dropped, power surge, etc., you lose both backups.
3: The storage drive might become a portable need, with it being on the TM drive, now your increasing the risk to the TM backup that something could happen to it along with the storage drive, due to increased movement.

  • Star Up Disk "full" problems...Which private/var files can I delete?

I have been having issues with my start up disk being full.
To the point where I could not copy to my clipboard as I had ZERO space left, programmes were shutting down etc.
I couldn't even delete the few pics I had as I couldn't open my Kodak software.
I have uploaded the photos now and deleted them, I have copied all the files I can to sticks, there is basically nothing I have added on the computer, yet I still have only under 700 MB of space on my HD.
I have downloaded and run Omni Disk...it is telling me I have 130GB of "private/var" files.
I know I cannot just go around deleting things, so need to know what I can and cant delete if possible?
I really need to sort this problem out!
I also need to know how to fix this problem from happening again - is this a log problem or what exactly?
Thanks for your help in advance!

    Hi, Limeslice
just to make sure that there is not a dum mistake: did you empty the trash?.
    Other:
Disk space consumers are typically large photo libraries, music and video files.
back them up, then delete them, and don't forget to empty the trash.
    To find large directories :
open Terminal (under applications/utilities), then type "du -d 1 -h" (without quotation marks). this gives a list. for example, it says " 25G ./Pictures", it means that the Picture directory has 25 GB. you can then refine and ask for deeper levels, by typing "du -d 2 -h" or "du -d 3 -h".
Try to find out in this way. if this doesn't give you the correct hint, please, report back, there might be more complex problems.
    Success, Thomas

  • If I use Time Machine to back-up my files, can I delete files from my Mac Air?

My Macbook Air hard drive is full, and I want to move photos to an external drive.  Once Time Machine has done a back-up, can I simply delete files from the Macbook Air?

If you can attach an external drive to the MacBook Air, you could move your image library to the external drive, then configure Time Machine to back up both your MacBook Air and the external drive.
This way, you would have your "originals" 'on one drive and "backups" on another drive. That is what backups are all about. If you move your images to the Time Capsule, they will be deleted sooner or later when Time Machine is looking for more backup space. In the meantime, even if you have the images on the Time Capsule....you will have no backups in the event of a problem with the Time Capsule or drive you are using for Time Machine.

  • What files can I delete from the hidden "Library" folder which is in my account folder?

I'm running out of space on Macintosh HD so I started moving things to my other computer (desktop so more storage). There should only be about 165 GB used out of 750 GB capacity however there is 459 GB used. So, I thought, where's all the space gone? Through using Finder's "Get Info" feature I tracked the 459 GB to Macintosh HD/Users/jacobhouse but in jacobhouse (my account's folder) I've stripped everything to a bare minimum. Amounts of storage used is as follows:
jacobhouse: 409.6 GB (other 50ish thats being used is applications)
      Desktop: 142 KB
      Documents: 500.1 MB
      Downloads: 1.55 GB
      Movies: 14.96 GB
      Music: 19.02 GB
      Pictures: 75.67 GB
      Public: 44.4 MB
This adds up to approximately 111 GB if I'm correct in converting KB/MB to GB. Still I haven't managed to find the culprit until I tried showing hidden folders. When I told Finder to show all hidden folders and I sorted them by size, I found one named Library which was 409.6 GB.
As you can see by the Where in the screenshot above, this Library folder is not the one directly in Macintosh HD but rather it is in a User folder. My question now is which of the files in this Library folder am I able to delete to free up space? (contents of Library are below)
Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to provide.

  • What files can i delete?

i'm a new mac user, so forgive my poor mac vocabulary. I just bought a 12 inch powerbook. when i click the 'Macintosh HD' icon on the desktop, it opens up a window w/ a bunch of icons(i count 27 so far) and i'm pretty sure i don't need about half of them. does anyone know which ones would be okay to trash?

Glad it worked. The only files you can trash are the documents in "User Guide and info", even though you'd only gain a few MB. There might be a folder Applications/Installers/, which contains installation files for additional, trial software like FileMaker Pro. Feel free to delete those one as well.
Unless you know what you're doing, never ever touch the hidden files "cores, dev, etc, mach, mach.sym, mach_kernel, ...". It would be like taking the engine out of your car.
You'll be able to reclaim about 500MB by removing unnecessary localization files. By default, Mac OS X comes with 20+ different languages installed. It's cool to be able to switch everything to Korean within 5 seconds. If, however, you don't have any Asian friends, you might want to use Delocalizer .

  • Iphoto library.tmp file - can i delete it?

I'm wondering if I can go ahead and delete the iphoto library.tmp file. It's over 2.5 GB and it basically seems to be duplicates of photos from 2008. I'm not sure why it's there. Anyone know if it's okay to delete it to free up a few extra GBs?

  • What Garageband files can I delete when I only use Logic Pro?

My Mac's choc-full of Logic and GB files and I'd like to make some space.
I know Logic uses some GB loops, settings and other resources – and I may even have duplicates – but I don't know how to streamline it all.
Tips would be much appreciated. Thanks!

In Logic, you can access GB's instruments, but you might not want them - so you can delete GB's Instrument Library (in HD/Library/Application Support/GarageBand). Otherwise, there's not much to get rid of.
Look for duplicate loops here: HD/Library/Audio/Apple Loops.

  • Can't delete file after renaming due to Word file handle still present. Error staes document is still in use but it's really not. Worked fine in 2007 but not in 2010.

I have some code associated with a Word Template. The template is opened, filled out and saved via a routing in vba. This all works fine in older 2007 version (which is version it was originally created in). Once this file is saved, the user can change the
date in a text box and re-save document. The code saves using the new date for part of new file name and then deletes that older file from the server. It fails at the delete function because the newer version of word is not dropping the file handle from the
first named file when user saves it to the new filename. In older version (2007) this handle was released as soon as file was saved to a different name. I can't seem to figure out how to release the old document filename so the old document file can be deleted.
I hope I explained this well enough.
Here's the code that woeked in version 2007 but fails in version 2010.

    mogulman52 and Don,
I went back and looked at my code and had already updated it to SaveAs in the new docx format. It still holds the lock handle in place until Word closes, unlike earlier versions which released the lock handle when you did a SaveAs.
As a note, all my Word and Excel macro-enabled (dotm & xltm) templates are read only and are never filled in, prompting the user for a file name on any close event or if they run the code gets auto-named. I do the SaveAs and concatenate the file name
from data on the document (or sheet) that has been filled in. During the SaveAs the docx gets saved to a network folder and also on a local folder. The lock gets renamed to the filename and remains until Word is closed.
So my code still fails at the point noted below while trying to delete an old filename version after the file has been saved as a new filename in a new folder. So....
The code is looking in the last folder where the docx file was saved for the older filename so it can be deleted. The newest docx version has already been saved in a different folder and has a new lock handle of its own. That lock is not my problem, it's
the older file lock which really exists in the same folder as the first filename that the docx was saved to. It does not release that lock until I exit Word. My work around has been to instruct all users to manually delete the older version file.
The other odd thing is this only happens when I run it from code, if you manually go through these steps with the SaveAs menu drop-downs in Word it will release the lock handle???
Hope this isn't to confusing and thanks for all your suggestions and help.
