Invisible iCal in dock

3 problems with iCal:
1)I recently reinstalled OS Leopard because my HDD was acting strangely. I replaced it with a new one & all the reinstall seems to be working well. BUT the icon for iCal, in the dock, has an invisible background(the red & white pad with the rings) until it is opened—then everything seems normal. However, before clicking on the icon(opening iCal), only the month & date are present as expected.
2)Also! When the program first opens, with all of the calendars checked, there are no events shown. However, when I uncheck any one of them, the events appear! And when I re-check the unchecked one these events also appear(as expected).
3)Double-clicking an event or creating a new event opens the window as expected but the colors of the window seem to be reversed! — The background for all event pull up menus is black with navy blue titles & dim white clickables—barely legible.
Help!

It appears the answer to your question is 'Yes', the ghost icon has been seen before.  No answer as to cause but fix is to remove from dock, go to Applications and drag the application icon back to the dock.
Hope this fixes it for you.

  • Date number on iCAL in dock reads JUL 17

    Hi,
I am new to MAC and can't figure out why the the iCAL date on the dock always displays JUL 17. If I open the calendar and quit the date on the dock will reflect the current date. Whenever I reboot it defaults back to JUL 17. Anyway to change this?

    Hi, welcome to Apple Discussions.
July 17 is shown when iCal isn't running. To have the current date keep iCal running.

I just passed over Ical in my leopard dock. I didn't double click. I seemed to have pulled it away.
How can I get it back to the doc?
    thanks.

Thank you for your help. As it turned out yesterday, I did this very thing. Having had 8 pc computers and now a mac, I've learned to explore. I figured it out last night, but appreciate your help. I only wish the type face was bigger on the calendar, except for changing the resolution.
    Thank you looter.

  • ICal weird dock icon after 10.7.2 update

    Hello,
I updated yesterday to 10.7.2 and since then, iCal is showing one weird icon in the dock, when it is not running.
It looks like a trabsparent image with the current date in the middle in black.
When iCal is running, it shows then its normal icon as expected.
I am using a macbook pro mid2009, 2,53MHz, if that matters.
I removed and added back the icon to the dock, but the bahaviour still persists.
Any ideas how to solve this issue?

I've got the exact same problem, MacBook Pro 4,1 here. As you can see it's really tricky to see on a dark background:
Running the app makes this go back to normal...but only when the app is running. Note that the icon also looks like this in Launchpad.
I've looked through various forums and have tried all of these proposed solutions (evidently this is a common occurrance in previous iCal updates):
    Trash Dock preference file
Trash iCal preference files (all of them)
    Trash iCal Caches data
    Repair drive permissions
    Reboot
Pull icon out of dock and re-add it
None of those, except the first one, do anything. The first one "fixes" it briefly as it resets the Dock to defaults. This causes iCal to revert to the default icon all the way up to the point that whatever process goes in, grabs the current date, and alters the icon to show the current date. Whatever that process is, it's the one with the corrupted or missing icon graphics. If any one knows anything about what updates the iCal icon to show the current date, that would be the first step to fixing this.
Anyone else feel like Lion has been the buggiest OS X release thus far? Granted, I didn't use 10.0 or 10.1.

  • Invisible iCal

Hello, so I did some comparing of different calendar applications: iCal, Sunbird, etc. I made a folder inside the applications folder in which I stored iCal, among other things for organization. I did nothing else to iCal.
So I decided to use iCal, and put in the dock. when I quit iCal the iCal icon lost the "calendar" backdrop and only retained the "MAY 31" text which usually sits inside the calendar icon. When I click the icon, the backdrop returns to normal until I quit, when it again vanishes.
It looks rather mysterious, and is fully functional, but I don't like that its doing this.
What should I do? I've tried removing and re-adding the icon. Should I reinstall iCal?

    argos12,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I made a folder inside the applications folder in which I stored iCal, among other things for organization.
Generally speaking it is not advisable to reorganize Apple supplied applications. System updates will not find the application when an update is applied.
    What should I do?
Try a Safe Boot, and after the Safe Boot restart as specified. If that is unsuccessful, find the com.apple.dock.plist in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences folder, drag it to your Desktop, log out/in or restart and check for normal appearance. Be aware that the Dock will return to default appearance after removing the Dock .plist file.
    Should I reinstall iCal?
    No
    ;~)

  • Icons are invisible on the dock

If you put the mouse on the dock then it pops up with the name of the app but you never see the icon. See screen shot.

Might be corrupted Dock preferences ...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.dock.plist file to the Trash.
    Restart your Mac.
If the problem persists, if you have installed any third party Dock add ons, check the developer's site for uninstall instructions.

  • HT2513 iCal Dock Badge meaning?

What is (or what should be) counted by the numeric badge on iCal's dock icon?
It does not seem to be new events ... .
    Thanks!
              Steve

    I asked about the badge.
Your example icon is not wearing a badge.
In this context, a "badge" is a small red circle placed on a corner of the dock icon,
bordered in white and often containing a number in white.
    These icons have  badges.

  • 'Invisible' Dock Icon since 10.6.4 update

The address book icon on my Macbook Pro has become 'invisible' on the dock since the 10.6.4 update. The space on the dock is still'active' i.e. I can still start the application from the dock by clicking on the space where the icon used to be, but no icon is there. I have tried removing/replacing the application on the dock, as well as rebooting the computer, but no change.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • ICal in Leopard has GUI Issues

Has anyone noticed that the date, in the Dock on iCal and when using command tab to cycle thru apps, is not flushed to the bottom white area of the calendar icon but crosses over to the red top section?
There are also 2 "Help"s in iCal's menu bar.
Is that a problem in Leopard or is it my iMac's?
Would appreciate if anyone can help help clarify this. Thanks.
    Rgds,
    Darius

    Hi, Ferd II.
I have checked my fonts in both Library/Fonts and User/Library/Fonts for duplicates after I upgraded to Leopard. All duplicates were resolved at that time. But after you suggested checking for duplicates, I did a 2nd check and found that there were new font's duplicated in Library/Fonts. Not sure how they managed to get there.
I have removed all duplicates and now iCal's Dock icon is beautiful again And the 2nd "Help" in the top menu is gone too!
You have been a great help
    Thank you very much.

  • ICal won't open at all.

I quit iCal and shut down on Oct. 2 @ 7:20 am. Powered up and iCal failed to open on boot as usual. Clicked on iCal in dock, icon bounced once then dead. In Finder/apps, iCal has a red negative sign on the folder.
    Wha's up?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions,
The do not enter sign on the iCal Application usually indicates the program is damaged (this can happen for a variety of reasons, but force quitting is one I see every now and then on the boards).
You can try downloading and installing the last OS update which includes the iCal update: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1048
If the do not enter sign is still there, remove iCal to the trash from the Applications folder and then reinstall it following this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3415
Once reinstalled you will need to install the Combo update again http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1048.
    Hope that helps.

  • Launch and hide invisible program at startup

    Hi,
I have been looking round various forums but cant find an answer. Hopefully someone can help.
    Problem:
We have 20 computers that all need to run a program at login (Its a 3d render client). We need the program not to appear in the dock so I have edited the .plist file in the package contents thus making the program run without a dock or taskbar. However, the actual program window remains, allowing users to close the program.
    What I need:
To open the program on startup, be invisible and hide itself.
I have tried a few scripts that launch it on startup. This works, but the next line doenst work to hide the program. I believe this is because the program is invisible (making it a background task) the finder command to hide or minimise has no effect.
I have also tried the simple procedure of adding it to startup items and checking "hide".
Any help would be most appreciated.

Its a client piece of software that allows 3d images from maxons cinema 4d to be rendered across a network. Under normal circumstances there would be no need to have this program running in the background or for it to be invisible to the dock. However. As everyone logs on in the morning this software starts on their machine. Their first instinct is to close it, which means that if I was to submit a job to the network it would not distribute it to the machines whose window has been closed. I want the software to start but be hidden so it cant be closed.
The only window that opens is a type of status/console window. So it would say what jobs are currently rendering or which have finished etc.

  • Restoring Preferences & Settings after Lion Re-Install

For reasons I regret I decided to re-install Lion, thinking that it might resolve a problem I was having with mail. It was interesting to go through the new process, using the Lion partition set aside on your hard drive... since there are no longer any DVDs involved.
However, the re-install stripped out all of my Sysytem and application preferences/settings/configurations/ etc. leaving me with a totally screwed up desktop, all my Dock icons missing except the basic Apple set.  Even my apps are almost unrecognizable, since I've spent years tweaking at least a hundred of them to work "just right" for me.
I'm assuming that everything I need to restore what I had is still in Time Machine, but I need to know specifically what folders to restore. Library>Preferences is an obvious one, but what others?
Also, do I need to boot from a DVD or other external system to carry out the deed? Right now, when I give it a try, I keep getting a messgae that I can't do it because my OS X is using the folder.
I have really found this crippling, so please offer suggestions ASAP. If I had known this would happen, I certainly wouldn't have re-installed in the first place. The original install preserved everything.
All help will be appreciated; but I don't want the kind of advice that says back-up everything, reformat your hard drive and start over from scratch. I don't consider that a solution.
    ...Charles

Since I didn't receive any replies here anyway, I decided to see if I could do a complete system restore from Time Machine after my original Lion install (when everything was fine) and before I re-installed Lion and lost so many critical settngs, my iCal calendars, dock contents, app settings, etc.
Luckily there was a one-day window in TM for me to do that.
Those who don't use Time Machine may have a more difficult time, but I'm declaring that I've solved my own problem this time.

  • Security Update 2007-04 Broke my Mouse/Keyboard Settings and Login Items

Any help would be more than appreciated; this is not a tragic issue, but it's annoying and I dislike having things broken, especially because this old Mac has been pretty much trouble-free for me over the years.
On the first reboot after installing Security Update 2007-04 in OS X 10.4.9 I noticed that my login items (iCal, A-Dock) did not launch, and that my mouse cursor and keyboard speed settings had reverted to the default "slow" speeds.
The login items were still present in their normal place (System > Accounts > Login Items), but do not launch after a login/logout or reboot. (The items launch fine manually, though.) Similarly, I can change the keyboard and mouse settings (both are Apple Pro devices), but these settings revert upon rebooting.
As per usual I repaired permissions immediately before and after installing Security Update, and I had nothing running while the update was in progress. I tried deleting and resetting the login items to no avail; the new choices appear in system preferences, but do not launch anything on login.
I've cleared all caches using Yasu, I reinstalled 10.4.9 using the Combo updater, and still I go back to square one when I reboot. I even deleted ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist and ~/Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist ; that didn't do anything, either.

So, reinstalling the combo 10.4.9 didn't fix it, neither did installing today's Apple Security Update 2007-004v1.1, neither did resetting the PRAM, neither did numerous series of cache clearing, nor deleting all login startup items.
Any ideas, folks? Apart from simply not restarting (which I seldom need to do anyway), I don't like having things broken, and having to reset my mouse and keyboard speed settings after a restart is tedious, let along not having anything launch automatically.

  • Performed OS update this morning - multiple launching errors

Got on my computer this morning (MacBook Pro - Leopard OS), all was well. Performed an OS update, now cannot access my computer. All kinds of "application quit" or "failed to launch" errors related to Finder, iCal, AirPort, Dock, etc., etc. when the computer rebooted. Error reports to Apple would not send. Powered up and down several times. No luck. WHAT is going on? Help!

You only need one of them. There are several out there to choose from - I'd go for DiskWarrior if I could just have one.
Most of these utilities comes on a bootable disc as they can only repair the drive that you're not currently started up from. Personally, with external HD's being so cheap these days, you can also consider investing in one too. This will allow you to keep a bootable clone of your whole system (There's plenty of free software to do this and it's really easy to do). So repairing the disk before updating becomes a lot simpler as you can use that instead of the CD which takes a lot longer to bootup from, and you get a full backup to either return to should something ever go wrong with your main HD or just to get back something you removed.
