Invisible Illustrator CS6 files

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this;
About two days I ago I purchased, activated and installed Adobe Illustrator CS6 as part of the
Master Collection on my Macbook Air (Version 10.8.2). At first I was pestered by the infamous
"Unable to set maximum number of files" error whenever I tried running the program.
Luckily I was able to resolve this thanks to the 'LaunchAI.command' file.
- My guess is this has nothing to do with the following problem
though I thought it couldn't hurt mentioning this beforehand as it isn't supposed to happen either. -
The problem I'm experiencing now is that whenever I save a file to a certain location (let's say my desktop)
the file will be saved normally, and is accesible at a later time whenever I use Illustrator but it will not show up
on the location it is saved to, as if it were hidden.
I've had this problem trying to save '.eps' files as well as '.ai' files.
I hope someone can help me out with this quickly seeing as these files have to be handed in on Monday and I'd be very
grateful knowing how to solve this.

What happens if you save the files to your documents folder?
Are you running any system enhancing apps?
Are you saving to a remote volume?
Do you have admin privileges on that computer?

  • MetaData in file not shown in Illustrator cs6 file info panel

I have a command line application that puts meta-data into files.  It was created using the 5.1.2 xmp toolkit.  The metadata is in the file.  I can see it if I just use TextEdit to look at the file.  I can also see the custom metadata in the Illustrator CS5 File Info Panel AND the Photoshop CS6 File Info Panel.  The information doesn't show up in the Illustrator CS6 file info panel.  Any clue why?

The files I am testing with are .jpg's.  They ultimately need to be opened with Illustrator which is why I posted.  I only tested with Photoshop to see what would happen and was pretty surprised to see the data there.  Like I said, it works in CS5 Illustrator, CS6 Photoshop, but the data just doesn't show up in the CS6 Illustrator (in the advanced nor the raw tab), and when I view the .jpg with textedit the data is difinitely there.  Pretty weird.

It's always a good idea to supply platform and AI version info.
How are you "converting" the file? Are you choosing "Save As" and selecting PDF from the file format options? This will bring up additional save options. I would suggest "Illustrator Default" setting unless you have specific needs.

    Hi codfather33,
Please downsave your Ai file from AICS6 to Illustrator CS5 version and then open this file in AICS5. This would ensure that any content is not dropped or expanded unwantedly.
    Thanks,

Google it and find some temp fix. run the illustrator by using "Run as admin" mode and fix the problem, but when use run as, can't see all the original user's mapping drives.
    So still need it fixed.

It is win 7 64 bit system and same error on Illustrator x86 and x64.

  • Illustrator CS6 File Disappeared

I was working in an Illustrator CS6 file and saved it into a folder on our server.  Another user tried to open it to work on it and her Illustrator CS6 hung and then crashed.  Afterwards the file was missing from the folder into which it was saved and there were two PDFs that had been created.  This happened to another user and both of us had to recreate all of our work on the file.  Has anyone seen this happen before and know of a solution to prevent it?

Don't write or read directly to a server from Illustrator.

  • Illustrator CS6 - File Links Lost & Multiple Users Can Open File Simultaneously

    Hi,
We've been using Illustrator for years, working off of a local file server for storing all Illustrator and support files.
But  we've been noticing with Illustrator CS6 some frustrating behavior:
    A) When a user creates a file and attaches a number of images, if a separate user then opens that file all links show up as missing. If nothing is changed or saved, then the original user will still see the links OK. But if another user fixes all the broken links and saves, then the original user shows missing links.
    B) When a user has an Illustrator file open, another user is able to open the file as well (no warnings). This is dangerous and never happened with previous versions of Illustrator.
We did test to see if either of these issues occurs with InDesign CS6 and they do not. Linked files are kept between users, and only 1 user can have a file open at a time.
    - What changed with Illustrator CS6???
Thanks. This is maddening for us and wastes a lot of time.

    Hi,
I think we can use the locks shared or exclusive locks concept here
you can find examples in this section on how to implement them -
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_47x200/helpdata/en/41/7af4c5a79e11d1950f0000e82de14a/frameset.htm
There are two types of lock in the R/3 System:
    Shared lock
Shared locks (or read locks) allow you to prevent data from being changed while you are reading it. They prevent other programs from setting an exclusive lock (write lock) to change the object. It does not, however, prevent other programs from setting further read locks.
    Exclusive lock
Exclusive locks (or write locks) allow you to prevent data from being changed while you are changing it yourself. An exclusive lock, as its name suggests, locks an application object for exclusive use by the program that sets it. No other program can then set either a shared lock or an exclusive lock for the same application object.

  • Can Illustrator CS4 open Illustrator CS6 files? or other work around way to open CS6 files?

Can Illustrator CS4 open files created in CS6? or can CS6 files be converted to be opened in CS4? like CS6 InDesign can be saved in IDML files to be opened in previous versions. Or if there is any other work around ways, like save CS6 files in PDFs/eps/... so the files can be opened in CS4 and work from there. Thank you.

    Open in CS6 , file >> Save As >> Version >> CS4.

  • Help recovering a Illustrator CS6 File

When I tried to open a big project I been working for many days, I get this error message:
I Need help urgently to fix this issue, since I cannot see most of my layers on the file after it opens.
I am using Adobe Illustrator CS6, on a macbook Pro device.
    Any help will be appretiated..

    S,
You may try to plunge into the code of the file to recover what is hidden in it.
This instruction by daxxter is quite good (you may also look at the posts there):
    http://daxxter.wordpress.com/2009/04/16/how-to-recover-a-corrupted-illustrator-ai-file/
Apart from that, you should never end a single day of work without saving it in a way that is independent of the fate of what is on your computer/server/cloud/whatever you rely on for current work. It is also advisable to save versions of long ongoing work under new names from time to time to have something to fall back upon.

  • Recovering an Illustrator CS6 file, following unexpected shutdown.

    Hey Guysm
Basically I was working on an Illustrator project and then my computer unexpectadly shut down. I hadn't saved the document and document recovery was not turned on. I was wondering however, if there was indeed 'tmp' files that would have been saved at some point, and that would allow me to recover this project. Please let me know
    I was using Illustrator CS6
I would really appreciate any tips...

    HI Patrick,
It is really unfortunate that you lost your document. Right now there is no way to recover a lost document as there is no such recovery feature in Ai. Periodic saving of the document is something which is recommended.

  • Importing Illustrator CS6 File into Photoshop - Are they linked?

I am teaching out of the Photoshop CS6 Classroom in a Book book and Chapter 8 talks about working with vector shapes and smart objects.  On page 227, under the Importing a Smart Object section, the following statement is made: You can import vector objects from Adobe Illustrator as Smart Objects. If you edit the original object in Illustrator, the changes will be reflected in the placed Smart Object in your Photoshop image file. You’ll work with a Smart Object now by placing text created in Illustrator into the toy-store poster.
Is this a true statement?  I have found the only way you can edit this Smart Object is if your right click the layer, choose Edit Contents, then work on a temporary file that must be saved in a temporary location.  This doesn't edit the original linked document.
I'm finding no way to edit the original AI file which I would consider the "original object in Illustrator", then see the change in Photoshop.

    Hi Matthew,
Here's the Help doc that talks in more depth about Smart Objects:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/photoshop/cs/using/WS41A5B796-6846-4e95-8459-95243441E126.html
And here's a section that goes into more detail on Placing files:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/photoshop/cs/using/WSfd1234e1c4b69f30ea53e41001031ab64-78f2a.h tml#WS634E6022-BC34-4aa8-857B-21D88D4C8D50a
We have multiple request to add support for externally linked files and certainly see the value. There also are a couple third party solutions that offer linked file behavior (I'm not sure what versions of Ps they work with). You can see and add to the request (and find the third party solutions) here:

  • Illustrator CS6 files don't appear in the Mac finder.

Has anyone else come across this issue? I create a file, save it and can't see it where I saved it. I go back to Ilustrator to resave and it asks if I want to replace the file that's already there. I press OK and go where the file should be and again it's not there. I open InDesign to see if I can access the file from it's "place" dialogue box and I can't see it. I tried renaming the file but Illustrator asks me if I want to replace the file with the one using the name I never used in the first place. What the heck is going on?
I'd appreciate any help. I haven't been able to use the new version of Illustrator because of this issue. Also, Please don't assume that I don't know where I put my files when I save them. I've been doing this for 20 years

Where do you save? Hard disk or network?

  • Illustrator CS6 files not saving properly as PDFs??

Prior to printing my work, I save PDF versions of my files.  More often than I'd like, when I print the PDF file from my computer, some of the graphics do not print correctly.  For example, a portion of a curved graphic (like a swirl) might be cut off leaving a blunt straight edge.
Does anyone else have issues with PDF files?  Is there anything I can do to control this quality issue?
    Thank you.

I had a similar issue, where a file saved in Illustrator looked incomplete when it opened in Preview (a colour logo was rendering in black only).
As far as I'm concerned, the point of a PDF is that it can be seen/read universally, so this is a fail, and opening it in a different program is no fix.
My workaround was to select and copy all the graphics in my Illustrator document, then open Photoshop and paste to a new document as a smart image. I then double clicked the smart image logo in the layers to edit it in Illustrator, from where I saved it as a PDF. For whatever reason this saved the PDF correctly.
Hope that helps somebody with the same issue in the future.

  • One of my Illustrator CS6 files will only zoom in increments of 100% -- how do I make it normal again?

I have one Illustrator file that will only zoom in increments of 100%, regardless of whether I use the zoom tool to select the area or I enter an specific zoom level.
How do I tell Illustrator to return to its normal zoom behaviour??

    niblettes,
If it is only one file, you may try to rebuild it as follows:
    1) Select all Layers in the Layers palette and Ctrl/Cmd+C to copy everything,
    2) Create a new document and tick Paste Remembers Layers in the Layers palette and Ctrl/Cmd+F to place everything in place and order,
    3) Utick Paste Remembers Layers in the Layers palette.
