"Invisible" photos in LR 2.5

I have a very strange situation, and it may be self-inflicted.  In the last couple of weeks I did a clean install of Windows 7 32-bit from Vista 32-bit on my laptop. Before I got started, went to my Windows 7 64-bit desktop and saved all of my photos, Photoshop Action Sets, and Lightroom Presets to an external USB hard drive for use later on the laptop.
OK, so the clean installation of Windows 7 on the laptop went very smoothly, and Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom 2.5 installed just fine.  I imported all 7800 of my photos into Lightroom, set all my preferences, and re-created my Collections. This all went very smoothly, but did take several hours of my time. (I had my laptop sitting next to my desktop's monitor so I could make sure I had everything set-up the same way in Photoshop, Bridge, Camera Raw, and Lightroom.)
I then got fancy and copied some of my previously saved Lightroom Presets into the appropriate folders under /Users/MyName/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Lightroom.  I know I copied the Develop Presets, Export Presets, Filename Templates, Local Adjustment Presets, Metadata Presets, Print Templates, Slideshow Templates, and Web Templates.
I opened up Lightroom and went into a few of the modules, and I know I tested the Export Presets, Metadata Presets and Filename Templates were both available in the Import dialog, the Develop presets were present (and the couple that I tried worked OK), the Slideshow and Web Templates seemed to operate as expected.  The Print Templates were visible, but not functional, as this laptop didn't have any of the printers (with the names embedded into the Presets) as the desktop has attached.
OK, so I thought I was finished and put the laptop away.  Two days later I got out the laptop and fired-up Lightroom 2.5. Horror of horrors!  I can not see any of the thumbnails in Grid View or in Loupe View.  The Compact Cells show the file names, ratings, and flags all right where they should be, but the center of the cell, where the thumbnail image should be is simple a gray field. When I change to Loupe View no image is shown, but I can see the basically the same stuff that was in those pixel locations that were present in the Grid View.
When I select a photo and go into the Develop module, the entire photo is just a gray field.  The Develop settings embedded in the DNG files are correct for each photo selected in the Develop Module. Now here's an unusual situation - when I click on the Crop tool, the photo is suddenly visible, but dissappears when I close the Crop tool.
I know the photos are still OK, as they can all be viewed in Bridge, opened in Camera Raw, and opened in Photoshop.  Lightroom knows when the external USB hard drive with the photos is attached and when it is not.  I just can't see my photos while in Grid or Loupe View in the Library module, and I can not see them in the Develop module - unless I activate the Crop Tool.  I don't remember testing the Slideshow, Web or Print modules, but I'm sure I would remember if I could see the photos if I did indeed test those modules.
Any suggestions on what to try would be greatly appreciated. I'm already allocating my entire Sunday afternoon this coming weekend to uninstall Lightroom and starting all over.

That's exactly what happens when Lightroom "views" a monitor profile as corrupt. This from the FAQ has a link to an Adobe Tech Note on the problem. It applies to both LR1 and LR2. You can be the guinea pig and see if adjusting the gamma in Windows 7's built in color calibration tool will fix it.

  • Duplicate 'invisible' photos are being created when I download from camera

    Hi all,
Recently spotted a weird thing happening when I download images from my Nikon D200. I use Image Capture, but not sure if that's the problem. Hopefully you guys can help.
Basically, when burning a DVD of images for a friend, I noticed that if I dragged over the folder that contained the downloaded images, a new disc was created in Toast, and the disc size matched the size of the folder as seen in the Finder. However, if I created a blank disc and just copied over the folder contents themselves, not the actual folder, the disc size was 1.5GB smaller.
So, I fired up TinkerTool and turned on Invisible Files in the Finder, and was shocked to discover that throughout my hard drive, in the folders I download photos into from my camera there are duplicate invisible 'photos' with a period at the start of their name (rendering them invisible) that are the size of a full high res photo each - essentially doubling the size of the folder. If I delete a photo in the Finder, it's invisible counterpart doesn't get deleted with it - so what the heck are they? They're taking up GB upon GB upon GB of space on my drive and I can't even see them unless I use TinkerTool.

I am not a software engineer, but I doubt if these are left over temp files.
More than likely, capture keeps both - the original and the colour managed files. Why hidden, no idea. Maybe it's the camera telling it to do so, maybe some software can "see" both depending on the colour profile selected. Maybe, indeed it's a bug in the software. The best way to find out is to send a bug report and Apple will answer.
If you are using the Spyder you should not colour manage the images at all.
the only profile you should use it the Spyder one.
Colour profile is basically a "translator" of RGB colour values, which displays (and prints) the images with a specific "colour shift".
Each time you acquire an image there is an error built in into the image (no device is perfect), then when displayed on a screen, this screen will introduce another colour shift, then the printer will shift the colours again, and you may end up with wrong colours in the output; and that's where the calibration and colour profiling comes in.
Spyder will scan your screen and adjust it so that the colours are as true as possible. If will not fix any of the camera problems, but at least on a screen you get exactly the colours that the camera took.
(Calibrating a camera is normally not needed, but it can be done too.)
Now, if your screen in Spyder'ed (?) then any software you use to edit the shots in should be set to use the Spyder colour profile, otherwise, you'll not see the true representation of your colours.
When it comes to printing... don't even get me started Most commercial printing joints will supply you with their machine's profile, for home printers - trawl the Internet for the profiles or spend A LOT of money on print calibration.
I did check and I have no hidden files, I do not ask Capture to colour manage my shots.
I also never shoot JPEGs, RAW only. Later if I know I don't want an image for editing, but want to keep it, I dump it to a JPG and delete the RAW.
A silly question here, why not use the Nikon's provided software to download the pix?
    Hope that helps a little.

  • Delete invisible photos iPhone

    Hello.

i tried a method found on this forum with syncing an empty folder to remove the remaing photos, it deleted some of it but i still have 14gb of it remaining, not knowing where, what it is and how to get rid of it.
    Any idea?

OK PEOPLE! I SPENT 3 HOURS WITH CUSTOMER SERVICE PLUS 2 HOURS OF PERSONAL FRUSTRATION WITH THIS PROBLEM, BUT THEN I FINALLY FIXED IT! (Did I mention 2 full restores??)
Go and download iFunBox for your computer, then open your phone up to see the files. Bam, they finally popped up (it was 4 GB of lost space for me) and I was able to delete it through this app! Hope this helps!

  • 1,8GB of invisible photos

    Hello,
I removed all the photos and videos of my iPhone so that I see “no photos of videos” when I open the photos app. I still see 1,8GB used by photos in itunes when I connect my iphone.
I restored the iphone twice already, that didn't help.
Any idea? I am a bit short on space on my iphone, that’s why I’d like to save as much space as possible and this “ghost” 1,8GB are frustrating.

I guess you have to restore. Good luck dude!

  • Invisible photos

This is my second attempt to get a solution to this problem.
I've just upgraded from a G5 Powermac to a MacPro. In iphoto all my photos show up as thumbnails, but when I try and double click on them, at least half come up with a black (or sometimes white) screen. It gets stranger still. If - having double clicked on a photo that comes up as a black screen - I try and edit the photo, for eg by rotating it, then it finally appears. Or at least, it usually does. Sometimes a completely different photo appears (from nearby in the thumbnail pane).
I've tried rebuilding the library, but that's made no difference at all.
    Any ideas? I'm stumped...
    Thanks in advance.
    J

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • 1.8Gb allocated on my iPhone6Plus but there are no photos

I have tried every recommended suggestion for deleting photos from my iPhone but my problem is....Ram is allocated for photos but none appear in photos on the phone. Using iTunes and connecting the phone, I'm supposed to have 684 photos using 1.8Gb ram but they are not there.  I have loaded photo file folders and deleted them using both iTunes and Image Capture. All that works fine but the invisible photos persist in sucking up the ram.  I can't clear it.  Sure could use some help.

Perhaps you have phantom photos, that are invisible in the Recently Deleted album and thus cannot be deleted. Then resetting the date will help.
There are apparently more users suffering from phantom photos that cannot be deleted:  Changing the date makes the photos in "Recently deleted" visible again:

I managed to get rid of the phantom usage. Restoring iPhone and resetting the phone settings/data do not work for me.
I had to move the Date on my phone earlier by 1,2,3 months and found the phantom photos in the Recently Deleted Folder. Next, I deleted the photos manually from the Recently Deleted Folder and the usage got freed up from my iPhone.

  • IPhone photos not seen in iPhoto - iPhone and iPhoto out of sync

Normally when I connect my iPhone 3Gs to my iMac, iPhoto '08 opens and my iPhone is recognized and all photos on the phone are shown in iPhoto, ready for import. However, my iPhone and iPhoto now seem out of sync. Without my iPhone connected, I opened iPhoto and it shows my iPhone in the device list; instead of showing photo thumbnails on my iPhone, iPhoto displays empty boxes where the photos would ordinarily be. When I connect the iPhone, iPhoto continues to show the empty boxes, rather than the photos on my phone. When I try to import one of the "invisible" photos, I get an iPhoto error message: "The following file could not be imported. (The import failed.)" How can I correct this behavior so that I can import iPhone photos again?

    Try trash the following file
    com.apple.ImageCaptureNotifications.DeviceDiscoveryDatabase.501
    from HD/Library/ Caches
    and restart your mac.

Did you remember to empty the "Recently deleted" album as well?
If this album is empty, you may have a problem with phantom photos.

Re: Why does my iPad settings, about show I have photos when my photo app says I have none?

  • Photos not deleting images from mac

    Hi All,
OK, so the issue is that I have taken some photos on my iPhone and these have synced to my Mac and iPad using iCloud Photo Library as expected.  However I then deleted these photos from iCloud Photo Library using my iPhone and they can no longer been seen in the iCloud Photo Library, or in Recently Deleted (as this has been emptied).  However they are still on my Mac's local hard drive.  If I try to import them on my Mac I get a message asking if I would like to import the duplicate photo(s), but I cannot find them anywhere in the library.
Does anyone have any idea what I can do to get rid of these images from my Mac?
    Cheers
    Graham..

They may be filed away in a Moment with an incorrect date - have you tried the search field to search for a part of the filename?
You already tried to repair the Photos Library, right?
Then it may be a problem of corrupted preferences files:
The Photos.app stores the preference settings in a file in your hidden User Library.  If this file has become corrupted, you can see all kinds of problems with the graphical user interface - missing menu items, invisible photos, etc.
To remove this file, do the following.
Quit Photos, if it is running.
Reveal your user library and delete this folder:  ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Photos/
To reveal the hidden User Library:
Bring the Finder forward by clicking on the Desktop or the Finder icon in the Dock.
Select your user/home folder (with the house icon in the Finder sidebar)
With that Finder window as the front window, press the key combination ⌘J to bring up the View options.
In the View options panel enable ’Show Library Folder’. That will make your user library folder visible in your Home folder.
Open your Home folder, then the Library folder, then Containers.
Move the complete folder com.apple.Photos to your desktop. Move the entire folder, not just the contents.

  • CS3 Bridge. OSX, after camera raw update- no scroll bar...

Half the contents of a directory run off the screen with no scroll bars. I only noticed because the last photo to the far right was cut in half. I select that photo, press right over and over- it selected 10 invisible photos before it ran over to the second row.

What EXACT version of Bridge? 2.1.1.9? What EXACT version of the OS? 10.5.2 or 10.4.11?
What have you tried to fix it so far? What routine maintenance do you perform on your machine?

  • Need help Today! Invisible clips--still photos show but no clips

I've never seen this problem. At the end of a 16 minute iMovie project (mainly photo slide show with music and narration) still shots from ealier in the movie re-appear after the last clip in the timeline. But the clips of the still shots cannot be seen at the end of the timeline, and thus there's nothing there to delete.
I repaired permissions and deleted preference files, but don't know what else to do.
This project is due to the client today. I burned the DVD all last night only to discover this problem in the iMovie project this morning. (I guess it took all night because of the many fancy transitions that were included in the proejct.)
I really would appreciate any help I can get.
    Thanks

Thanks Daniel. I sorta did that. Simply copied all the timeline and audio clips, relocked them together and am now re-burning the DVD. For some reason it seems to burning faster this time as well.
I was desperate for help because thought I'd be stuck with those invisible clips.
    Thanks for the feedback.

  • How to get rid of invisible duplicate photos in iPhoto '09?

    Hello All,
In the course of transfering my data from my external drive (clone of my iBook) to my new MacBook Pro, I transferred all the photos I had in iPhoto on the iBook.
Afterwards, I realized the photos on the clone version of iPhoto were not necessary as I had them backed up elsewhere, so I deleted them all in iPhoto (on the MBP) in order to start a fresh library.
To do this I selected them all and hit the delete key.
Yet somehow, my iPhoto library still showed 9 GB of data.
    But where are the photos?
I thought they might still be in iPhoto trash, but the empty trash feature is grayed out....
So then Idecided to import a smaller collection of photos from my iBook directly to the MBP. iPhoto asked what I wanted to do with duplicates and I indicated not to import (apply to all).
Now, my new iPhoto library is 12 GB, i.e. the deleted 9 GB + these additional photos...
After reading some forum messages I installed the Services add-on that lets you see the contents of your iPhoto library, and almost every photo is duplicated!
Yet in my iPhoto window, only one copy of each shows.
How can I get rid of these invisible duplicates?
    Thanks for any advice!

Thank you, that sounds like a good solution, except.... I've already begun erasing and reformatting my iBook drive, so I no longer have a separate copy of the photos I wanted to keep; they're in the iPhoto '09 library, along with duplicates...
Is there no way to "weed out" duplicates ?

jpg and pdf formats don't support transparency. You need to use a format such as tif, png or psd that does.

  • Can I use hologram or invisible cloak with other backgrounds in photo booth?

I want to use Hologram or Invisiblity cloak with other backdrops. Is there a way i can do that in Mavericks?

If I understand what you want to do.
    From Photo Booth Help.
    Create a custom backdrop
Photo Booth comes with several backdrops, but you can use your own photos and videos to create additional backdrops.
You can use a prerecorded video as a custom backdrop. If you use a digital video camera to record a video backdrop, set the camera to use fixed focus, exposure, and white balance.
    Open Photo Booth
If you’re using Photo Booth in full screen, move the pointer to the top of the screen, then click the Exit Full Screen button .
If you’re viewing a photo or a video, click the View Video Preview button .
    Click the Effects button.
Browse through the backdrops until you reach User Backdrops.
Drag a photo or video to one of the User Backdrop frames. You can drag a picture or video from your desktop, the Finder, iMovie, iPhoto, or Safari.
You can use this custom backdrop whenever you take a photo or record a video.
