Invitation to redesign my website...

Hi guys,
My website
fyrne.com needs a redesign. I after
something simple and clean, pref' non-Flash. The logo must remain
but the colour scheme can go. The sitemap and structure can be
changed, as can fonts etc.
As you'll see there aren't a huge number of pages, I just
need what content I have to be displayed better. I'd like the site
to be template-based and easy for me to update and add new pages. I
don't know HTML, only DW as a WYSIWYG.
So, what am I offering in return you ask? Well, I can't
afford to offer money, but in exhange I'll give you back however
many hours you spent on the site redesign. And realistically, it'll
probably only take a few hours, right? You can use those hours how
you wish. As you'll see from the site we're experienced journalists
and public relations professionals. So, you might like to revise
the copy on your own site, put together a PR strategy for your
company... whatever you like.
I'm really hoping this mutual exhange of skills will be of
interest.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Cheers
James

Have you thought about purchasing a designed template and
working from
there:
Something like this may work:

There are more templates in different flavours available at
the site.

  • Best practice for redesigning a website with CSS

    I have a site I created in early 2000's in Dreamweaver back in the Macromedia days www.kid-ebooks.com. It is basic HTML using a lot of tables, some flash, etc. I have since created many other sites using CSS and Dreamweaver (Currently on CS5.5) and I now want to do a complete redesign of Kid-ebooks, using CSS. I also however want to keep a lot of existing content, links, etc. I don't know what is the best approach, whether it be to try and apply a CSS to the site, design in parallel and then switch when ready, copy and paste content? What is be recommendation for starting over, but keeping some content?
    Thanks,
    Dave

    I've used this formula with success.  Make a back-up site beforehand.
    Use Find & Replace > Source code > Tags >  to strip out all of the <table> <td> <tr> <font> <background> and any other deprecated code from the site.  Ultimately, you will be left with unstyled content, hyperlinks, & images.  Validate code and fix any errors.

  • Redesigning a website with bad code, wont render correctly.

    Recently took control of the design of a website that was written by a designer who did not know what he was doing (using font tags and css in the same page?) the website will not render in the design view and I've gone through the code and tried to figure out what is wrong with the site but I cant figure it out. It renders somewhat succesfully online but I need to make it better. I will include a screen and will provide the full code if requested, I'm not expecting one of you all to do a full redo just some ideas to throw around, something I havent thought of yet. Im using Dreamweaver 3 by the way. Thanks for reading!

    The current site was built with Dreamweaver's FluidGrid Layouts in HTML5.  But unfortunately, whoever built this site didn't know what they were doing as evidenced by the rookie code errors:
    http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cflymarine.com%2F  And, the site is only moderately responsive in Mobile & Tablet devices.  Also, Windows Media was a bad choice since many web devices don't support it.
    If after 2 days of working with Dreamweaver you think you can take this on, think again.  Responsive Web Design is an advanced discipline that should be undertaken by someone with considerable experience in HTML5 and CSS Media Queries.  In other words, you must learn to crawl before you can run .
    As Murray said, this project needs an experienced web developer to sort out the mistakes and make the site work properly.  If you want to hire me, you can reach me through my web site.

  • Anyway to use Video Lightbox Output in a Flash-based website?

    I use Video lightbox on my current site (For an example here is my page now - http://www.ruesterprod.com/video )
    I am redesigning my website in Flash and I would like to make a Flash Gallery using the Video Lightbox elements (Thumbnail, jQuery loader, etc.)
    How could I accomplish this?
    Thanks All,
    Aza

    You can use the entire Video lightbox as is by stacking it in a separte <div> container over the top of the other Flash content on the page.
    The stacking process is a common practice in HTML and is called z-indexing.
    Leave a blank spot in your .fla in exactly the spot you want the video gallery. Place your .swf on the Web page as you normally would. Now there will be a blank spot where the video gallery will go.
    Then using z-indexing and CSS positioning, place the video gallery in it's own <div> container stacked over the top of the Flash content. This will make it look like the video gallery is a part of the Flash background.
    Here is a working example... the Vimeo player is layered over the Flash background:

  • IWeb '09 and creating an "Index" page for two separate sides of my website

    I'm redesigning my website with iWeb '09 seeing that I've recently switched to Mac from being a life-long PC/Windows user. I'm not too web programming savvy so iWeb fits my needs as a very good program that redesigns my site very nicely (and quite inexpensively, as well).
    My current incarnation of my website (http://www.jeffreykern.com) was designed by a professional web designer on Dreamweaver for PC a couple of years ago. Some time ago when I was trying to update my PC with XP SP 3 (bad idea as it turned out), my connection to my web hosting service got completely fouled up and I lost the ability to update the site and haven't updated my site since. Knowing that I was going to be switching to Mac (with my new Mac Pro) I never had the desire, or energy, to patch things up to update my site with my PC. Plus, I was in need of a redesign so I eventually got my site ready to go with iWeb 09. That's where I stand right now...
    So, as you can see on my current site I have a main index page that splits up into the two sides of my life: the triathlete side and the writer side. I've already redesigned both sides of my site with iWeb, I'm ready to update it thru my web hosting via FTP and Transmit 3, but I cannot find how to create a main "Index" page on iWeb that will let me branch off into two different directions. By having that "Index" page intact I will be able to keep my domain of jeffreykern.com as it currently stands. I don't mind having to get two different domains for each of my two sides of my site but would like to avoid that extra step -- if, at all, possible.
    Thanks in advance for your help,
    Jeff

    Building three websites on three separate domain files would be my choice.
    Its important to realize that you cannot have a page called "index" using iWeb because the associated index.html file will conflict with the one that iWeb creates.
    As has been suggested, the first site would be one page. The site name would be jeffreykern.
    This site will publish as jeffreykern_files and an index.html file. Inside this folder is another index.html file. This is the one your domain name will be directed at if you don't need an RSS feed.
    If your server allows it, create a root folder on it called "jeffreykern" and upload the contents of the local folder to this and ignore the separate index.html file. Note that I said contents and not the folder itself.
    A lot of servers require that you upload to a pre existing folder. In this case you will have to upload the index.html file and the jeffreykern _files folder.
    The two other sites are named and published as writer and triathlete. The external index files of these two sites are renamed writer.html and triathlete.html.
    These two files and their corresponding folders are uploaded to your root folder on the server after adding tags and optimizing.......
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/SearchEngines/SEO.html
    Now you have a main (one page) site with two sub sites.
    The domain name http://www.jeffreykern.com/ is directed at the index.html file so that when this is entered into the browser, the main page will appear.
    The links to the two main sections, whether they be text and/or image, are created and selected as external hyperlinks.
    http://www.jeffreykern.com/triathlete/
    http://www.jeffreykern.com/writer/
    Clicking these links will open the first page of their respective sites.
    If you do the sensible thing and trash the iWeb default navigation to replace it with a custom one, you can include external hyperlinks to the landing page and the other site in this.
    The website - iWeb for Musicians - is created like this and is built on 9 separate domain files for ease of updating and publishing. The whole site is tied together with a Main navigation to get to each section which has a Sub navigation to jump around that section.

  • Clearing Spry Menu Bars within the website

    How do I clear the spry menu bar values within a website. I am trying to create a horizontal spry menu bar on one page and then another horizontal one on another page. It keeps the same values everytime I create a new page. How do I clear the values for each page?
    Thanks!

    I am redesigning the website in the test environment using a new page. While doing so I am redoing the spry menu bar. It changed the spry menu bar in the original website (production environment). I would like to have the spry menu's be separate. How do you create separate spry menu bars for a situation as such?
    Thanks!
    If you are editing locally it should not overwrite your remote file unless you have the option "Automatically upload files to server on save" checked off.  If that is the case you should uncheck that box.
    If you want to further separate the old version from the new version, the only other method is to just create a new site.  Even if you start with a duplicate of the existing site.  Then you don't risk the chance of overwriting the existing files on the server.

  • Navigation Bar does not appear on website after upload

    I use i-web to create my website, save it to a folder and then upload to the web using GoDaddy. For some reason, the navigation bar at the top of every page does not appear. Instead, there's a black dot to the left of the page. When in the i-web program NavBar is there and functions normally. I just redesigned my website and uploaded everything and had this problem. It's never happened before. Can anyone help?

    One frequent reason for that is the fact that not all the files in the Scripts folder for the site are getting uploaded.  While viewing the site bring up the Activity Window (Command+Option+A) and see if any of the files are listed as missing. If there are you'll need to upload the Scripts folder to the server.
    If you're using iWeb the only option there is to try the File ➙ Publish Entire Site menu option.
    Or, you can publish you site to a folder on your hard drive and use a 3rd party FTP client like  Cyberduck to upload just the Scripts folder to the server.

  • FormsCentral e-mail invite to be a team member not working

    We are trying to add a member to our Forms Central team. However, he isn't receiving the e-mails inviting him to the website. His status shows him as "invited." I made him a form response receiver and contribitutor to a form I created, and it goes to his account but it does not see him as a member and his account remains as a "free" one instead of associating him to the paid team account we have. We have been successfull setting other members up to our account, but for some reason we're unable to get him set up. Please help.

    All of our staff has that type of format: [email protected] and all of
    them have been successful. I've included a screen shot below of our team
    members. Our buyer and administrator have attempted adding and removing him
    multiple times without success of him receiving the e-mails.

  • Trying to create a document that's an email invite with an embedded link

    Well the subject just about says it all... But here goes, I need to create an invitation to a new website. This invite will, I'm sure be forwarded manytimes over. That's why I'm trying to embed the url into the image and everytime I drag the doc into applemail it just comes up as a document icon and won't let me control click view as (it's greyed out) Any direction on this one.
    Thanks...

    Mr. "P",
    I think it's more a problem with Mail but with Pages.
    Pages documents are so-called packages, i.e. folders that contain several files necessary for Pages. That's why you see the icon: Mail tries to send the document as an attachment (and will even zip the document).
    Mail by default doesn't allow you to create HTML-mails. You can find a description how to create a newsletter with Pages in this posting: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2538151#2558882. Just adopt the steps to your needs.
    Another alternative would be to install the Mailpictures bundle for Mail. The advanced preferences option "Show options in compose window" will allow you to use raw HTML in your message.

  • How do I redesign Source Code on Dreamweaver?

    Hello everyone,
    I currently am doing a voulenteer website (they said they will let me intern for them if I do this, I am not getting paid since I volunteered). Little did I know that the client had a website that was done by another company and would like me to redesign it.
    I thought no problem, I can manage, but now its stressing me out.
    The company sent me a "Source Code File" on the website and I just do not know where to begin.
    The Zip file cotains:
    Five folders: Content, CSS, Images, Pages, Script
    There are also three items: Custom.css, Index.html, Main.css
    I do not want to let them down, all my experience is wordpress and I have 3 weeks to work on redesigning the website. Supposedly, I cannot use wordpress because they want to charge the client an extra 1k if I do wordpress because they have to link the content.
    I would really appreciate an experts advice on how to begin redesigning and how long might it take. I understand only basic coding so the file is not too scary its just the CSS and the other tabs when I open the index in dreamweaver which have me worried.
    Sorry if I am making no sense, I am just really stressing on this one website.  When I said web design I wanted to start from scratch...I look forward to hearing from you all.
    Thanks!

    So for the website should I make buttons myself or just use html for them?
    The entirely depends on you. Fact is, the easiest 'button" to make is:
    <a href="#">click here</a>
    In other words, it's a simple link.
    But you can style navigation and use backgrounds and divs to create button-like navigation:
    Here's the navigation I did for one website (html):
    <div id="navigation">
    <nav>
    <ul id="menu">
            <li><a href="../index.html">Home</a></li>
            <li><a href="../about.html">About</a>
           <li><a href="../connect.html">Connect</a></li>
          </ul>
    </nav>
    </div>
    And the CSS for the above, which creates a drop-down menu structure using CSS3 elements. The navigation is very button-line and works great:
    @charset "UTF-8";
    /* CSS Document */
    /* Main */
    #menu
            width: 100%;
            margin: 0;
            padding: 10px 0 0 0;
            list-style: none;
            background: #f6d78d;
            background: #fbf6f6; /* Old browsers */
    /* IE9 SVG, needs conditional override of 'filter' to 'none' */
                        background: url(data:image/svg+xml;base64,PD94bWwgdmVyc2lvbj0iMS4wIiA/Pgo8c3ZnIHhtbG5zPSJodHRwOi8vd3d 3LnczLm9yZy8yMDAwL3N2ZyIgd2lkdGg9IjEwMCUiIGhlaWdodD0iMTAwJSIgdmlld0JveD0iMCAwIDEgMSIgcHJlc 2VydmVBc3BlY3RSYXRpbz0ibm9uZSI+CiAgPGxpbmVhckdyYWRpZW50IGlkPSJncmFkLXVjZ2ctZ2VuZXJhdGVkIiB ncmFkaWVudFVuaXRzPSJ1c2VyU3BhY2VPblVzZSIgeDE9IjAlIiB5MT0iMCUiIHgyPSIwJSIgeTI9IjEwMCUiPgogI CAgPHN0b3Agb2Zmc2V0PSIwJSIgc3RvcC1jb2xvcj0iI2ZiZjZmNiIgc3RvcC1vcGFjaXR5PSIxIi8+CiAgICA8c3R vcCBvZmZzZXQ9IjUwJSIgc3RvcC1jb2xvcj0iI2Y2ZDc4ZCIgc3RvcC1vcGFjaXR5PSIxIi8+CiAgICA8c3RvcCBvZ mZzZXQ9IjUxJSIgc3RvcC1jb2xvcj0iI2Y0Y2M2ZSIgc3RvcC1vcGFjaXR5PSIxIi8+CiAgICA8c3RvcCBvZmZzZXQ 9IjEwMCUiIHN0b3AtY29sb3I9IiNmYmY2ZjYiIHN0b3Atb3BhY2l0eT0iMSIvPgogIDwvbGluZWFyR3JhZGllbnQ+C iAgPHJlY3QgeD0iMCIgeT0iMCIgd2lkdGg9IjEiIGhlaWdodD0iMSIgZmlsbD0idXJsKCNncmFkLXVjZ2ctZ2VuZXJ hdGVkKSIgLz4KPC9zdmc+);

  • Urgent help needed!! Layout table and Draw layout cell dissapeared.

    I need some urgent help. I'm using CS3 but for a while my
    Layout Table and Draw Layout Cell icons appear greyed and can't use
    them at all. Is there any kind soul out there who knows how to fix
    this? I'm going nuts trying all the possible options but none seem
    to work.
    Help please!!!!!!

    > How would you about designing a page without using html?
    You don't. But I don't recall suggesting that you not use
    HTML. I just
    suggested that you use best-practice HTML, no? Or maybe you
    meant to ask
    how you would go about building your site without learning
    HTML? In that
    case, I think you are outta luck. Using DW without knowing
    HTML is a very
    punishing experience, I'm afraid.

  • Stupid Question Re. Tables

    Hey everybody. I have been working with web templates so far
    and although I have learned a lot trying to modify them, I noticed
    that I still lack a basic understanding of HTML. I have decided to
    redesign my website from the ground up, primarily with the help of
    Adobe’s Dreamweaver 8 online tutorial.
    Now, that I created the first table on a page, I want to
    insert another table into a cell of the fist table. I’ve done
    that and it worked fine. However, when I try to insert an Image
    Object using the same width like the table itself/cell of the
    original table (760 px), the visual aid seems to recognize a
    different value for the table width (bigger).
    Why is that?
    I haven’t used any cell padding, spacing or anything.
    Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • I can't update iWeb. Error message:  "The disk may be damaged or full, or you may not have sufficient access privileges." I had received a response that gave me the "best" FTP, it was one that gave each iweb user their own support person. Need info again

    I keep getting an error message, sometimes the beginning part changes but it always ends with the quote above. I haven't had the time to work ont his in a few weeks, but weeks ago I got a response that indicated the "best" FTP to use, because they give each iweb user their own support person with whom the user can speal everytime, instead of getting as new person each call/email.
    I am currently with 1&1.co.uk, which was recomnmended to me by a friend who is much more website intelligent than me: he designs websites for a living. They may very well be very good for someone who knows what they are doing, but they are not so good for me or for Apple users. Since I am paying every month for not being able to get updates published, I would be willing to pay for an FTP which would give me, a novice, resal Apple support. I also do not want to have to completely redesign my website or loose my website address, so I want to transfer the whole critter to a new FTP.
    Thanks
    Resolute Woman

    Here's the hosting that gives you a personal support person...

    As for your problem, try the troubleshooting steps under "Fix iWeb" here...

    Also check the files you are trying to upload - especially image files - for spaces or special characters in the file name.

  • Can I export multiple images from an FLA?

    Hi All,
    Is it possible to save or export all of the images used in a FLA file from Flash CS4 Pro? I am redesigning a website and the client does not have the original source images.
    Thanks.
    Dan

    Are your images all separate symbols, or how exactly is it organized?

  • My Spry Accordion will not work In IE but will in Opera

    Hi Everyone,
    I'm having a problem with my accordion spry widget in a website that I'm working on. Bear in mind theres's a lot of things to fix but it's in the initial stages. What happens is, if you go under the heading, business and then training you will see an FAQ section. You'll notice that the tabs are all open and it's just not functioning correctly in IE, Chrome and Firefos but it is working in Chrome. (I Haven't tried in Safari as my computer freezes ??) I've included the link and code below.

    You not are using the latest Spry files
    The latest  version of the Adobe Spry Framework is 1.6.1, this is the same version  that ships with Dreamweaver CS4. If you use Dreamweaver CS3 (uses Spry  1.4), its wise to upgrade your files to the latest version. This can  easily be done using the Spry Updater that can be found here.
    If you replace
    <script src="http://www.adelxt.net/SpryAssets/SpryAccordion.js" type="text/javascript">
    with
    <script src="http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/spry/widgets/accordion/SpryAccordion.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
    you will notice that it works as it should.
