IOGear GUH 420  Firewire/USB Hub

I purchased this IOGear GUH420 Firewire/USB hub to use on my new MacPro 2.66 Intel desktop. Ever since I installed it, my firewire devices have been acting up and I couldn't ever figure it out. I was having lockups, spinning beachballs, monkeys flying out the floppy drive slot (oh yea, no floppy drive). Suffice it to say my new macpro wasn't acting right.
I did some research today and found out that some Firewire hubs do not like the voltage that comes from the new G5's and macPro desktops.
When I did the system profile, all my Firewire showed was Firewire 800/400 or the like. No devices, no hubs!
When I disconnect the IOGear hub and reboot... viola! Firewire in system profile shows all connected devices and everything runs much faster and I have zero errors!
So far, I would have to conclude that the IOGear hub is not compatable with the macpro, or mine has just been defective all this time.
Anyone else have issues with this hub?
Thanks,

UPON FURTHER REVIEW
and extensive swaptronics....
The problem is not the HUB, it's the ADS Firewire 800 external drive case. It has 2 FW800 ports on the back and 1 FW400 port. I guess I assumed too much when I thought that I could chain a 400 device off the fW800 case.
When I connect ONLY the FW800 case to the MacPro, and do not connect any FW400 devices off the case, the firewire profile in system profiler shows everything as it should be.
I CAUSED THE PROBLEM AND NOT THE IOGear hub. I have posted my stupidity in case anyone was influenced by my previously incorrect assumption about the problem.

  • FireWire/USB hubs compatible with a Dual 2.0 GHZ G5

    Hello,
I have a IOGEAR 7 port Firewire - usb hub connected to my dual 2.0ghz G5. Often when I start my G5 there won't be any working firewire and/or usb port. Sometimes they work, but overall is a pain./ Sometimes repairing permissions or reseting the nvram or all helps solve the problem.
Anyway, I would assume that the Hub is having some issues with the Firewire power coming from the G5
I am trying to find a list of Firewire/USB Hubs which Apple officially have said are compatible with the G5.
Do you guys know any of those?
    Thank you

I still think save and consider the next revision to the iMac line rather than throw more at your G5.
SATA drives that you can use now and in the future are likely to be safe investments.
People have used 3 x 10K VelociRaptors, along with cheaper but still fast WD Caviar 640GB as a great way to improve performance. SSDs are fast but probably for 1st gen G5 would require a PCI-X controller.

  • FireWire, USB hub

I'm looking for some advice on a self-powered hub to connect an Epson Stylus Photo 2200 printer, an Epson 3200 photo scanner, a Nikon CoolScan IV film scanner, and a LaCie 120GB external drive. The Epson devices have both ports, while the Nikon and LaCie are Firewire only. USB connection is not critical, but it would be nice to have. The hub, of course, will be connected to the PowerBook.
I've searched this forum, but have not found any postings about a firewire or firewire/USB hub.

    Braby -
My experience with hubs has been limited to ethernet and USB hubs. Most have their own power supply, but I once had a USB hub that didn't, and I found it limited what devices would work with it. Since I've never used a Firewire hub before, I did not know whether there were powered or un-powered varieties, so I was just playing it safe.
I've found a number of Firewire hubs through Google and I have checked Amazon.com. Both sources have provided some information, which have been helpful, but not definitive. I was hoping to find an Apple user or two who have tried doing what I am wishing to do, and thereby benefit from their experience.
I'll probably try a Belkin, Buslink or Macally hub from someplace like CompUSA, so that if it doesn't work well I can at least take it back.
    Thanks for you input.

  • Firewire & USB Hubs

    Hi All
Can anybody suggest a good matching Firewire hub & USB hub to sorta match an
Ali Imac, I am in the UK.
    Thanks.

This is probably the wild card solution, but have you considered one of the External Hard Disks designed to match the Mac Mini. The colouring is about right and in addition to whatever backup/additional storage it gives you, you also get a powered USB2.0 and power Firewire 400 hub in the box.
Apparently they fit rather nicely on top of the iMac's pedestal.
I can't find any good ones in the UK but OWC are a great mac supplier and UK buyers have found their prices cheaper even once international postage and VAT is added.

  • Firewire USB hub/adapter?

    Hi
I Need to connect a USB web cam to my fore wire 800 port. Is there any adapter/hub that can do that? The two USB ports my not be used since there is another webcam there wich use all the BUSspeed. Since The firewire port is on another Bus it could be possible if there exist such an adapter/hub. Anybody knows?

I found plenty of USB-FW adapters on Amazon, but none of them worked for anyone. If you know of one that does work, could you please let me know where I might find it?
I need to connect my Canon XL1 to my MBP (which doesn't have FW!).  I refuse to buy Apple's Tbolt-FW adapter. I spent a forture on this notebook + I already had to buy a Tbolt-Ethernet adapter + an external DVD drive. This is getting ridiculous.
I looked for an HDMI to FW adapter but found nothing.
I have an old Sony VAIO which has i-link and ethernet. It looks like my only option at the moment. I've had many good macs, but this one is very dissapointing to say the least.

  • Is there such a thing as a Firewire 800 Hub (like a USB hub)?

I'd like to have a firewire port "at the front" of a Mini, for easy attaching of a Camcorder-firewire line or other occasional-use Firewire devices. The one FW800 port at the back of the Mini has external hard-drive(s) attached.
Ideally, I'd like a hub that splits this FW800 into FW800 and FW400 jacks (2 of each)! But I've never seen such a hub, and am not getting clear answers from hardware vendors. USB hubs are easy to find, but Firewire?___

  • Airport Extreme and USB/Firewire Combo Hub

This has probably been covered before and I didn't find it. So I apologize...
I bought the new Airport Extreme and a firewire/usb combo hub so that I could connect my external HDs (3 are firewire and 1 is USB) - the USB is the only one that is working....
Any Ideas? (Besides putting the Firewire back on the desk top and sucking it up!)
    Thanks,
    Tim

I have a related question. I want to buy a triple interface drive (ethernet, USB, Firewire). The plan is to connect the drive an ethernet port on an Airport Extreme. The question is - can I later 'daisychain' on an additional firewire drive?
So the first drive would be connected via ethernet and the second connected to the first via firewire.
Based on Niel's post, I am guessing this won't work. Comments?
Also, are there certain brands that are known to play particularly nicely with Leopard when hooked up as ethernet network drives?

  • Firewire on a usb hub

I have a mac mini running Lion, my question is can i plug my Belkin usb hub into the firewire port on the mini? i want to be able to use the hub to plug my digital camcorder into, allowing it to use the firewire port, i understand the firewire is much quicker and it is also the only way to use the camcorder to catch video for the mac mini. Any help appreciated.
    Regards
    Sean

No, you would need a Firewire hub to do that

  • Network Problems with LaCie Firewire or USB Hub

    Hi Folks,
I have a recurring problem with my 27-Inch iMac mid-2010 running OSX 10.7.2 (had same problem with Snow Leopard before upgrading) where, when a Firewire device ( LA Cie HD) or a USB Hub is pluged-in the wired ethernet will not work on wake up from sleep.
I always have to cycle off my Cisco Router for the Mac to use the wired ethernet.
Does not happen with the WIFI and does not happen if there is no firewire device or USB hub pluged in.
Anyone seen this before? Anyone with an idea on how to resolve this?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts
    Dan

I picked up a 2big network a few days ago (to replace two Buffalo LinkStation Pros) and also have not been able to get an icon for the drive to appear on my mac desktop, despite being able to access the 2big through "Connect to Server." I hope to learn more from LaCie.
A successful workaround I'm using is to put the contents of each share on the 2big drive into a single folder in the share, make an alias of the folder in the share, and drag/copy the alias to the desktop of any machine needing access to the share. Admittedly a little kludgy, but easy to disseminate once set up. The desktop alias calls up the respective folder quite crisply, tested now for several machines on the network -- at least with up to ~40 Gb in a given folder/share so far. For reference, this network currently has 6 Mac and 3 Win XP nodes.

  • USB Hub and FireWires Configuration

How can I identify if my USB hub and FireWires are the authentic configuration? I have 2 hubs connected and am not sure what the configuration is like from Apple and whether someone is connected to my iMac.

Nobody could connect to your USB or Firewire without a cable, only way some could connect to your Mac would be with a cable, or Wifi/Arport to your computer or router.

  • MacBook Pro (mid-2010) Internal USB HUB freezes/locks up

MacBook Pro (mid-2010) wilth the latest firmware, etc.
    OS X 10.9.1
USB KVM to share keyboard and mouse with another computer
This has been working flawlessly until I upgraded to 10.9.1
The KVM uses the Scroll Lock key to toggle the input between the two computers
I switch back and forth many times a day.
Almost once a day now, all my input to my MBP will lock up when switching the KVM over.
The MBP track pad, keyboard, blue tooth Magic Mouse, KVM mouse and keyboard all become unresponsive.
I am assuming that the interal keyboard/track pad/blue tooth transceiver are all tied to an internal USB HUB.
The MBP is up and running and I can ssh into it.  The only error message in the log is that the mouse device coming from the KVM is busy and it will be disabled. I have tried to close the lid for several minutes and then re-open, but it does not resolve the issue. I have tried connecting another USB mouse/keyboard during this time and it will not work. I have tried kill -HUP on the usbd and USBAgent processes. Everything stays unresponsive. The only way to resolve this condition is to reboot the MBP.  Note: the KVM works find on the other computer when I switch it back and forth regardless of the state of the MBP.
I am suspecting that when this happens it is some how disabling the internal USB HUB, which if all the other devices are connected through it, nothing no longer works (but maybe I am crazy with that thought).  Anyone have any insight?  Is there a way to reset the internal HUB short of a reboot?
    Thanks in advance!

I'm seeing the same problem with a 2010 Mac Mini with IOGear KVM and MS wireless mouse. This setup worked flawlessly for years on Snow Leopard but started hanging soon after the Mavericks upgrade. I'm running 10.9.4, currently the latest release. The system usually hangs after a KVM keyboard switch from Windows on the other set of KVM cables back to the Mac Mini. ssh into OSX works fine but a shutdown hangs indefinitely. top showed no processes spinning. The 1st console message after the hang was:
    8/6/14 8:49:21.000 PM    kernel[0]    USBF:    1317978.201    AppleUSBHubPort: Port 2 of Hub at 0x6200000 about to terminate a busy device (Microsoft® 2.4GHz Transceiver v7.0) after waiting 10 seconds
There were no other messages for hours before this. I'm using VM Fusion but I think it hung once without it running. The Windows 7 side of the KVM works fine.

  • Macbook Pro freezes when I unplug USB hub

When I unplug my USB hub from my Macbook Pro it freezes up and I have to turn it off and back on. I did not have this problem before, it just starting happening recently. The only thing plugged into the hub at the moment is my keyboard which has the wireless reciever for my mouse plugged into it. Any solutions would be greatly appreciated as this makes it a hassle to take my Macbook anywhere.
The USB hub is Gigaware brand, my keyboard is Apple, and my mouse is a Logitech MX Revolution, if that helps. I also have a LaCie 1tb external hard drive plugged in but that's using the firewire 800 slot so I wouldn't think that would affect it.

I have a somewhat similar problem with my Macbook Pro and USB hub - it just started happening last week as well. I have a USB (external power) hub that hooks to an audio interface, piano keyboard, wireless keyboard and mouse. I normally have my laptop off when I hook up the hub because I've been traveling. Last week I plugged it in while the computer was on and the hub froze. I turned off the computer and unplugged everything. I turned everything back on and the hub worked...for a few minutes. Now anytime I run any type of audio or video from the computer (itunes, LogicPro, internet video) the hub freezes as soon as I press play. Then the program (like Itunes) freezes and I have to force quit. This makes me wonder if it is not the hub but something that the computer is using to run audio and video. None of my external equipment has caused problems for a year now - there is no new equipment - and just the standard Mac software updates.

  • Good USB hub to use?

I was needing some input on which USB hubs are good for the MBP? Also, do they make a USB hub that plugs into the firewire port on the MBP?
    Thanks

I use D-Link DUB-H7. It has 7 expansion slots, and the option to use an external power supply, though that 's not always necessary. I would use the external supply if the connected devices draw too much power.

  • USB Hub

I purchased a targus 7-port USB hub for my powerbook, but in about 30 minutes of it being plugged in, I get increasing background noise from the fan that then gradually becomes even more increasing to annoying limits and prevents any work from being done.
Can you suggest a powerbook friendly hub?
    Thanks

USB 2.0 hubs and devices increase the PB's fan activity. For connecting low speed devices, use a 1.1 hub. If you need an external hard disk, better choose a Firewire or a Combo drive.

  • USB hub kills laptop

I have a Belkin 4-port USB hub that I plug my external harddrive, ipod, and printer into, which I then connect to my powerbook, all via USB. But, whenever I leave the hub plugged into my laptop and then shut my computer's monitor, putting it to sleep, later, when I open it, it won't wake up. The screen stays black and, though the computer IS on, the monitor won't light up and the only way I can fix this is by rebooting the computer.
I've ascertained that the USB hub has to be the issue because this problem never occurs when I eject all the devices and unplug the hub. Though I know the powerbook has problems with hubs that mix USB 2.0 and 1.1 - that's buried deep in the manual - I have made sure to have only 2.0 devices plugged into the hub, so I know that isn't the issue.
The hub was bought new, as was everything connected to it, so I really doubt that the issue is defective hardware on that end. I would assume that Apple makes their computers so they actually work when USB devices are plugged into them and left there - I use my laptop as my home computer, so it's often in this state - so what's the deal? Apple won't help because it's a third party device that is triggering the problem. The USB hub is the one that Apple sells on their website, so I know it's supported! Any ideas?

Ian, I am not sure if this will help explain about USB connections or not.
USB connections are temperamental and can sometimes cause several different disruptions.
I will give you a few of the anomalies that I am sure USB connections to peripherals can cause. This includes just about any including Camera's Scanners, Printers, and External Zip Drives.
More often than not You need to have the devices plugged in before you start your computer before it can be recognized. This is not always true but it happens, so this is a contradiction, It can work either way but this is the reason they recommend not to disconnect a USB devise while your devise is plugged in. There seems to be a disruption in the connection and if you do unplug it and then plug it back in it will not remount unless you, re- boot, or restart your computer before it will work again and recognize the devise.
It appears that USB devices are normally good in there operation when plugged in directly to your computer, rather then a HUB.
After reading the different posts in these forums on the inconsistency, and from personal experience in there use.
It is know wonder that there is such poor performance in the use of USB Modems, and everyone recommends Ethernet or Firewire connections over USB.
USB is and can be functional, if you remember the simple rules to follow on connection and disconnection of the devises, and special care is taken.
Yes I know we as users feel that we should be able to just plug and play but this is not always the case.
