Iomega 320GB eGo FireWire/USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive, Mac Edition

Hi, can I use the above drive for time machine? thanks, marek

Hi JordyT,
I have not heard of this error before and I am not exactly sure what the cause would be. What file system is the external drive formatted to and what operating system are you using? Have you tried running Disk Utility on the hard drive? Is it possible to try on another computer perhaps?

  • Canvio 1.0 TB USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive HDTC610XK3B1 Sluggish

Bought a Toshiba Canvio 1.0 TB USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive (HDTC610XK3B1) back during Black Friday 2011. Since I've had it, I've used it on my laptop, my rather powerful HP desktop, and another pretty powerful ACER desktop and all exhibit a very weird problem with the hard drive. Almost as if it's going to sleep or becoming idle, if I haven't accessed it or used it in some time (say I open an image that's on the drive and work on it for 5 minutes in photoshop) and go to either browse, save, or just about anything that would require access to the drive, things lock up for about 15-20 seconds and as I watch the hard drive (which the light will be off) the light will suddenly come on  flickering which will then unfreeze the system and I have access to the drive.
It's the only potable hard drive I have that's doing this. I'd imagine it's some sort of auto sleep that it goes into and when you 'awaken' the drive to use it it takes a few seconds to power back up... but that's just my theory.  It makes things go very slow when you're working on lots of images on the drive, so any help would be very much appreciated!
What would be causing this momentary freezing as it is accessed? And is there a way to turn this off?

    Hi,
I have exactly the same problem... with both my Canvio 1TB drives.  (One is a HDTB110XK3BA, the other a HDTC610XK3B1.)
For some reason, NoSleepHD wouldn't install.  (Could be because I have a 64-bit system.)  As for Linux, I don't have it installed, and I'm no computer technician.
Isn't there a an easier way to get rid of this very annoying problem?
    Thanks!

  • Canvio Connect 1TB USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive

What is the safest way to securely erase this drive to use on a differant  PC? I have the open sourced program Eraser. Is this program safe to use with this drive or are there better options?
    ---thanks

With CCleaner you have the option of overwriting each byte on the drive 1, 3, 7 or 35 times.  I use 3 myself which will prevent restoration except by the most sophisticated and expensive restoration software. If you're paranoid enough, you can always use 7 or even 35.  With 35 passes, I don't think the Almighty himself would be able to restore!

  • Unable to install Toshiba Portable Hard Drive on HP20-2105A

I have purchased a Toshiba 1TB USB 3.0 portable hard drive (Model No DTB310) and, when I plug in the USB 3.0 cable, the computer shows that the folder is empty, i.e. there is no setup.exe file. I am running a HP20-2105A computer  with Windows 8.1 -  64 bit (purchased in September 2014). I have 5 USB ports, but am unsure whether this model has 2.0 or 3.0 ports and have tried them all with zilch response. Any ideas, or have I blown $79?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi,
Why you need setup.exe file ? You don't need to setup anything, when you plug in, it will turn up as a drive. You can plug to USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 port but it's a USB 3.0 drive, it does make sense to plug to an USB 3.0 port. Your machine has
    (a) Left: 1 USB 2.0 port and 1 USB 3.0 port, the USB 3.0 port has SS and arrow symbol,
    (b) Back: 3 USB 2.0 ports (all 3).
Your machine runs Windows 8.1, normally you can hear a sound when you plug something to any USB port.
    Regards.

  • Verbatim 320GB FireWire/USB Portable Hard Drive Won't Mount

Hello ... I have a Verbatim 320GB FireWire/USB Portable Hard Drive that won't mount. The drive has only been used a handful of times ... it is self powered. I accidentally disconnected the drive without dragging it to the trash first .... so I got the "improper disk removal" error. Now the drive won't mount at all. Is it dead or in some kind of frozen state? Any ideas how I can get it back up and running??

  • Back up - trying to install Iomega eGo portable hard drive

I am trying to upgrade from Panther to Leopard. I bought an Iomega eGo portable hard drive to back up my files before I do the upgrade. I followed the instructions to reformat the Mac drive but when I am in the Disk Utility - Erase - the "Volume Format" does not highlight so I can't do anything. Any suggestions? Iomega support is closed on Sundays and I really wanted to get this done today! Thanks for your help.

    what files do I backup?
Most users backup their entire hard drive contents - system, applications & files. As a minimum, backup your important files.
Can I just drag and drop the Mac HD to the Iomega backup hard drive? and the applications and my personal file?
You can't drag the Mac HD to the backup hard drive to copy everything. Generally, you can drag files & most applications, however, there are many invisible files associated with the System that would not get copied. You need to use one of the cloning apps below.
Depending on how many GBs of data needs to get copied to the external hard drive, it will take multiple hours to copy everything. I do mine over night. Be sure to turn of the Energy Saver. Depending on which cloning app you use, after the first clone you can then just update the things that have changed. Most of us use SuperDuper (shareware) or CarbonCopyCloner (donationware).
Whenever you upgrade your OS, like going from Panther 10.3 to Tiger 10.4, you will not lose anyhing if you use the Archive & Install feature & select preserve user settings.

  • Firewire power for portable hard drive

I just replaced my hard drive on my Macbook Pro, and I bought a Tango Pro external enclosure (portable) from Acomdata to house the old drive. I want to use it as a backup drive for my iMac 800 G4 flat panel running 10.4. My Macbook Pro recognizes the external portable, but my iMac does not seem to have the power necessary through the firewire port (or the USB port, but I would like to use the firewire) to spin the portable. Is there a power issue for the iMac G4 flat panel with portable hard drives?

While an older Mac (PPC) can see and use an Apple Partition Map
(APM) and Journaled HFS+ formatting for a boot system, generally.
A newer Mac can see and use, to a degree, both kinds of partition
map schemes, especially on an external drive that may support a
clone or files to be (perhaps, if capable) used by more than one
Mac. So, by default, the newer Intel-based Mac would tend to put
its favored GUID partition mapping on at attached hard disk drive
in the process of setting it up for use; however it can also use the
older standard APM on an external drive.
Also, it is best when two computer systems are expected to use
a single external hard disk drive device, that the internal drive in
that unit be set up to contain more than one partition, and the
Disk Utility can be used to set that up, too. And when using two
sets of software to create projects that may not be compatible
under both different OS X versions, you can keep those apart
from each other in the external drive in their own place.
Not saying the total and full answer is to just use the best possible
partition map for the correct vintage OS X version, but to use one
that is compatible for both the newer & older, on the external HD.
And to change that mapping scheme would erase the drive.
And I am always open to someone who is more current and has
a great deal more recent experience in these matters, to reply
and set the course straight with a short, quick, workable answer.
Now, I have to go and see about helping someone get a pile of
old firewood from the backyard they were given two years ago.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Iomega portable hard drive problems with mounting

I have a Iomega portable hard drive (firewire) which is not being seen by my
g4. When I go into system profiler it says unknow device, and it is not showing up in disk utility.
    Can anyone suggest anything please.
Bearing in mind I'm a total idiot when it comes to anything more than plugging everything in and making sure the light comes on!
I've been on the Iomega site which wasn't any help
    Thanks

have you recently changed any permissions for the disk?
its just that once i had a very reliable FW HD, then i decided to wipe it for use as a bootable startup/backup/archive drive.....software i got to do archiving said that i had to set permissions for the backup partition of the disk - (like it was to be the 'owner's' partition).
anyway, as a result - it suddenly wouldnt mount or show up on the mac i was using it with.
until i realized why, by having it mount ok on my other older G4 - in OS9, as the permissions didn't seem to cause any confusion. so i reset its 'owner' permission status, and presto - all sorted.

I have a Seagate Slim Portable 500 GB USB 3.0 external hard drive that worked great with my Macbook Pro 13" Retina but gets ejected and won't show files on any iMac. My Macbook Pro and the two different iMacs I tried it on were all using Mountain Lion, so the only difference was the iMac versus Macbook Pro.

I just tried this, no luck...
I connected a different USB cable, still the same problem. Tried both cables with the problematic hard drive on two different computers, still the same problem.
At this point I assume I'll probably need professional help in saving the files, thanks for the assistance.

Does your printer have a slot for an SD card?  Is there are card in the slot?  If so, the computer is trying to mount that card as an external device.  It might be corrupted so that it can't be read.

  • USB & Portable Hard Drive problems

    HI!
    two questions....
    1) i have a portable hard drive where i have stored books / photos etc - it shows up on my macbook pro but if i connect up to my old toshiba laptop it does not even register it is there, and i have another portable hard drive which i used on my old laptop which actually shows on the mac but i can only acces the files (pics) to view it does not actaully let me copy or delete anything - why is this and can i get them to read/change on both?
    2) similar to the above portable hard drives i have a flash drive that now wont register on my old laptop, but another usb which i had ebooks on i wanted to transfer them onto the mac.I would have to unzip some files (sometime on the mac and sometimes on the tosh laptop) and then copy over to the mac. this was working fine but i noticed that as i deleted the copied files off the usb to make way for more unzipped files the amount of space wasnt adjusting accordingly. i now find that out of a 16G usb i only have approx 300MB of space left. Yet when i check what is ont he drive there is nothing on it - how can this be?

It appears that you are trying to use  external drives/USB flash drives that are formatted for a specific operating system with another operating system. For example you have a drive formatted for OSx and you are trying to use it with a Windows computer.
If you format all your external drives and USB sticks to FAT32 or ExFat then both OSx and Windows will be able to read/write to these drives.
If you select ExFAT, then use your Windows computer to format the drives/USB drives. There is an issue with drives formatted to ExFat using OSx.
Make sure you make a back up of your data before you do any formatting. Formatting the drives will remove all the data on them.

  • Firewire Powered Portable Hard drives

Are there in good firewire powered portable hard drives like the firelite you can get at the apple store? Maybe something with more space or a bit cheaper.

Depends what you like. There are many little devices available both on the open market and in the AppleStore, which do exactly the same thing, even a DIY version (choose and buy a OEM drive, stick it in a FW housing) - they work too! Cause FW housing are made to a standard, hence it doesn't have to be specifically state it's Mac compatible.
However, from experience, the prices tend to be slightly inflated compared to the open market. Maybe you like to shop around.. could save a small fortune.

  • Portable Hard Drive Needed

I seem to be out of the office more and more and I need to have my files with me. I have a Mac G4 and have been researching portable hard drives, the only thing is, not many of the reviewers consider the older macs.
PC Magazine did recommend a portable drive for "older mac users" but I thought that I would ask the experts before I make a purchase.

Is this the one that your son has? It looks like it gets good reviews and the fact that the company stands by their products is a big plus.
The OWC drive I pointed to is the same one my son uses. He's had it about a year with no issues. I like the fact that it's got a 3 year warranty, while others are sometimes 1 year. I have several desktop external drives that use the Oxford chipsets, and others would agree they interface very well to our macs.
The other benefit to firewire is if you either copy your system to the hard drive, to make a backup of your internal drive, or just install an operating system on it, you have the capability to boot and use your system if there is any problem with the internal hard drive. You can even partition the external drive into one partition with an operating system/backup and the second partition with business data. If you think this approach would be one you might use, take that into account when you decide what size external drive to get, ie, get a larger one than you might normally go with just for data.
Also, on an external hard drive whose purpose is primarily data storage, I probably wouldn't spend the extra on a 7200rpm drive, instead going with a 5400rpm drive (which is probably the speed of what's in your Powerbook). So ... if you have an 80GB internal hard drive today, round it to 100GB for backup, then add 300GB? for business data ... maybe a 400GB or even 500GB external hard drive would work for you. It would be a backup for your internal drive as well as hold your business data. Just a thought ....
