Iomega 360 GB external hard drive startup

How do I install OS X.6 onto my external hard drive? Can I just drag the SYSTEM folder from my intel-based iMac into the external drive?
I think I may be missing some install OS X CD's -- for the iMac. I have the iMac OSX Install disc 1 -- and -- OSX Install Disc 2.
Or can I just install X.6 to the extended drive?
If I do have to install directly to the extended drive, will I have an option to switch drives -- I don't remember having this option.
Sorry for the mundame questions.

While technically you could use one dual partioned external HD as a TM and CCC drive that strategy is not wise. That means you would be placing both backups on one drive, if that drive failed you would lose both defeating the purpose of the backups. In that case it is better to get a second external drive and use it as your bootable clone using either CCC or Superduper, that way if either failed you still have at least one backup. BTW for the bootable backup I would recommend getting a Firewire or Firewire 800 drive rather than USB, if your internal drive fails and you need to rely on the external drive to boot and run from a USB drive would be extremely slow and isn't really recommended.

Roger

  • Iomega eGo portable External Hard Drive problem with imovie09

I have an eGo portable HD Mac edition Firewire800/Firewire400/USB 2.0 Iomega HD and a Macbook OS X ver 10.5.8 with imovie09.
I have moved all my imovie09 files to the iomega hd. When i open imovie09 to work on the files that are on the iomega hd, you can see in the Event Library that the iomega hd shows up but when I click on it there are no files in it. Since there was no step by step manual on how to transfer files from the Mac to the iomega hd, i'm wondering what I did wrong.
Thanks for any help you can give me!!

    Some things to check...
    1) Is the iomega formatted as Mac OX Extended (journaled)? If it is FAT32, it will not work with iMovie. I'm guessing that it is properly formatted since you can see it in iMovie.
    2) Have you used the Events to make Projects? If so, did you move the Events and/or Projects to the external drive from within iMovie? If you move them in the Finder, it will break the links to the projects. The solution is to move them back where they were, and then to move them to the external drive using iMovie. To move an Event in iMovie, you hold the Command Key down while dragging the file and dropping it on that icon for the external drive that you saw in the Event Library. Projects can be moved similarly.
    3) If you have not used any of the events in Projects, it is possible to move them using the Finder. iMovie will expect to find your Event Folders in a Folder at the top level of the external drive. The Folder must be named "iMovie Events". (Or imovie Projects, for projects.) If they are not in these folders, iMovie will not see them.

  • Iomega external hard drive

I recently purchased a 1 terabyte iomega Prestige USB external hard drive for use with my 2.16 GHz Core Duo MacBook Pro 15" running Mac OS X 10.4.11. I have entrusted this drive with several hundred gigabytes of data, and it has ceased to be recognized in any form by my laptop. This is not the first hard drive to stop being recognized by my computer. It is not recognized on another Macbook Pro, but that may be for unrelated reasons.
It does not appear in Finder, in Disk Utility, or in USB probe. A Western Digital Mybook works fine, if a little slowly. I have tried both USB ports, restarted my computer, and it has been plugged in for about 15 minutes. The drive is spinning and the light is on, but it is totally inaccessible. It is formatted as Mac OS X Extended (journaled), and it is less than a month old.
I have accidentally improperly disconnected it in the past, but the last time I used it, it was working and was disconnected properly.
How can I get this drive working with my computer again?

If the drive fails to appear in Disk Utility or System Profiler yet other external drives work, then the drive may have suffered mechanical failure. Either the drive itself, the enclosure's power supply, or the enclosure's bridge board may have failed. Contact Iomega tech support for assistance.

What do those instructions tell you to do? Have you tried doing the reformat with Disk Utility?

  • Data Recovery - External Hard Drive

    Hi,
I have recently copied over a folder on my iOmega (Prestige Portable) External Hard Drive with a folder from my Power Book Hard Drive, with the replace all.
What I need to know is there a way to step back to the point before I copied over this folder?
Ok so here comes the Dumb bit, I have never set up Time Machine! Yes I know, very stupid!
So I'm now in the process of seeing if it is possible to step back with data recovery software and if this is possible what do people reccomend! I have tried SanDisk RescuePro but It comes up with a message saying that the drive is too big, I think it is meant for Flash Drives!
Have I posted this in the right Discussion thread? If not were do you think I would be best to post this?
    Thanks

Us mere mortals do tend to learn things the hard way, don't we?
So I'm now in the process of seeing if it is possible to step back with data recovery software and if this is possible what do people reccomend!
FIrst, stop using the drive immediately. If the files haven't been overwritten already, the more you use it, the more likely that is.
There are several Data Recovery apps for Macs; +Data Rescue II+ seems to be the one mentioned here most often, but others get good reviews, too. I've not used any, so can't say one is better than another.
I understand you'll need another external disk to receive the recovered files. (But you'll probably need one anyway for Time Machine or other backup app that you'll be using regularly from now on, right? You can use a second internal HD, Time Capsule, or in some cases back-up over your network.)
I also understand that some of these apps have a trial version that will tell you whether there's anything to be recovered, and perhaps recover a single file, so you don't spend the $$ for nothing.
Look for +Data Recovery+ via Google, VersionTracker.com or MacUpdate.com. The last two have user reviews. Just be certain whatever you use is compatible with Leopard.
And/or, search for +Data Recovery+ in the Using Leopard forum.
Once this is sorted out (or to explore Time Machine options), you might want to review these:

  • External Hard Drive is not being detected

I recently purchased an iomega 1.5TB external hard drive and I cannot detect it anywhere in my computer. I can hear the device hum and start running once I connect the two, so I'm assuming there is enough power, but the computer can't see it. Please help someone!

Does it appear in Disk Utility?
Have you tried FINDER PREFERENCES>GENERAL and checked off the appropriate boxes?
    Ciao.

  • External Hard Drive not sleeping or waking

Hi I have a mac mini with Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2. I recently purchased a iomega 2 TB external hard drive that came pre loaded with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) pre formatted on it. I use 800 FireWire for the connection. I had no problems with the drive mounting and transferring files until I put my computer to sleep. I took me some time to figure out that the sleep function was the cause of the problem I was having. The drive would still be listed in finder after my computer woke but when accessed finder would freeze up and I would get the spinning cursor. Also when I left it to sleep over night I would find the drive off and an error that it had been ejected wrong.
I watched the drive when I put my computer to sleep get the sleep command and flash for a second and start to sleep but then come on again as if there was an error in the sleep command from my mac. If I wake my computer again to see the action of the drive it then goes to sleep when my computer is waking. I am guessing the command is the same to the drive from my mac. Wake or sleep, it just depends on the drives current state as to whether it sleeps or wakes.
My fix so far is to not let my computer sleep at all. As well I have to choose in system preferences to not allow the drives to sleep. Did notice after some time the external hard drive will sleep anyway from idle time but now my mac is not sleeping obviously. Or I have to eject the disk manually and then turn off the external hard drive then put my computer to sleep.
Am I missing something here? It's either a hard drive error or a software bug in Lion.

  • Why is Time Machine not recognizing my same old external hard drive?

Have been using an Iomega eGo portable external hard drive for a couple years now and am recently getting a pop-up that says it's not formatted, but I've used it regularly in the past and it does in fact hold all previous back ups, so not sure what has changed.  The attachment shows TM turned off but I'm getting the same message with it turned on as well as after unplugging it all and restarting.  Still in Mavericks 10.9.5 as not ready to switch to Yosemite til this is done.  Thank you for all help!

  • Why won't my external hard drive appear in Finder?

I have an Iomega 320GB SPHDU external hard drive which I was using as my backup disk for Time Machine and also to store other files (documents, photos, etc.). I have been using for some time now and never had any problems, however this morning, I plugged the hard drive into my MacBook Pro, which is from early 2011 and on operating system OS X 10.9.4, using the USB ports and the hard drive did not appear in Finder. I checked to see if it had appeared in Disk Utility which it does, but Disk Utility is telling me that the hard drive needs repairing. When I try to repair the hard drive, I get the message 'Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed up files.' As I said I have never had any problems with it before, but this has just occurred this morning and I'm unsure why it has happened.

Because there's a problem with the disk's directory structure; these are often the result of improperly unplugging drives or forcing a computer to shut down. Proceed as instructed, or try using a more powerful utility such as DiskWarrior to repair it.

  • Using an external hard drive if a rookie Mac user and computer illiterate.

I recently purchased an entry level Macbook (£699) and was unable, financially, to opt for a bigger hard drive (it's just 80GB) and so decided to supplement my storage with an Iomega MiniMax 360GB external hard drive from the Apple Store. I have no idea what to do with it and so as an illiterate, computer wise, require some lay-man's terms instruction. How do I get stuff (music etc) on to it and back again? Can I leave my iTunes program on the Macbook if the music files are on the external Iomega? If I double click on music files on the external Iomega will they automatically launch iTunes and open or do I have to keep transferring files back and forth between internal and external drives? With all of my music on the external Iomega what do I do if I want to take music away with me, half a dozen albums or so, and how do I do this? Sorry to be so obtuse and inane, but it takes all kinds to make a world!!!

essentially you plug your external drive in and drag the files you want onto its image ...which is copying them After you copy something over to the external, you can delete it from your main drive - which frees up space.

  • External Hard drive and .avi files ?

Ok so I just got an Iomega 500 GB external hard drive. I am using it mostly to transfer a lot of movies from my Mac hard drive. Most of these movies are .avi, and I've just recently noticed that when I connect the external hard drive to my computer or another computer and open these movies.. the quality is significantly lower. Way worse than the original copies on my mac hard drive.
Is there a way to copy or transfer my movie files to the external hard drive while retaining its original quality?

    Hi,
If you are able to successfully transfer your .avi files from your laptop to your external HD, there is no way to you should loss in quality. When you observe the loss in quality, you are reading your .avi files from your external HD!?
You might observe some lag due to the transfer of data from your external to your software on your Mac that reads the .avi files, but if not, I really can't see where that loss in quality comes from. I've been reading .avi files for years from my external hard drive and I've never seen loss in quality or lagging...
May I recommend you observe which programs use most of the RAM/CPU while you do so in Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor. Maybe not having enough available RAM is the culprit. If not, you should bring back your external HD and trade it with another to see.

  • Iomega external hard drive either 'not found' by Time Machine or is now in 'read only' format

I don't know what's going on with my iomega external hard drive.  Sometimes the HD is recognised by the computer; other times it isn't; if it isn't I can restore to an earlier back up via Time Machine app; but it's like the disk isn't writable.
Ten days ago, I had trouble backing up my iMac using Time Machine.  After turning it off and restarting my external hard drive, it backed up successfully.
However, today I am trying to back up my files, and TM tells me it can't find the external hard drive.  Nothing has changed -- I have been out of town this past week -- but somehow my HD now seems to be in 'read only' format.  It does turn on, and I could restore my computer to an earlier back up.
"Mac OS X can't repair the disk.  You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can't save changes to files on the disk.  Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can."
Annoyingly, despite my HD not showing in Finder or on my Desktop (as it usually does), when I simply turn it off I get that warning message "The disk was not ejected properly".
Have tried verifying and repairing using Disk Utility, to no avail.
Am prompted to reformat but I don't have a good understanding of what this means and how to do it.  I'm guessing this would wipe the disk clean and I'd have to create the initial back up image all over again -- I'm reluctant to do this since this HD is my only back up and if it all goes tits up I'll be up that famous creek without a paddle.
Thoughts, suggestions, input all welcome and deeply appreciated -- thank you!

It's possible a heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair app can fix it, but they're expensive (DiskWarrior is about $100), and there's no guarantee it can do it.
Am prompted to reformat but I don't have a good understanding of what this means and how to do it.
That will erase it.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #5.
It sounds very much like the disk is beginning to fail, although it's possible there's a bad port, cable, connection or power supply (if it has its own).
I'd suggest getting a new one, and using it for your Time Machine backups; once you have a good backup there, reformat the old one (and select Security Options to write zeros to the whole drive -- if that fails, you know the drive is toast).  Use it for secondary backups, per FAQ #27.   If it has failed, get a second new one for secondary backups.

Also, Im a photographer, so I like to name a lot of files at the same time (used to do in on PC and it was very usefull.) cannot find out how to do it on my Mac. Really appretiate if some one can give me a solution! Thanx

Your drive is formatted with the NTFS file system.  OS X can read but not write to the NTFS file system.  There are third party drivers available that claim to add the ability to OS X to write to an NTFS partition.  I have not tried them and don't know if they work.
The only file system that OS X and Windows can both write to natively is the FAT32 file system.

  • E4200 No Longer Sees My Iomega 1TB External Hard Drive

Hello - I had an Iomega 1TB External Hard Drive connected to my E4200 router.  I had shares confgured and they were properly running on the network.
As of yesterday, this all stopped working. The router does not see the drive; it is as though it is not plugged in.
I rebooted the router and it still does not work.  I've connected the hard drive directly to my PC to verify that it works there, and it does.
The router is running Ver.1.0.03 (Build 14) of firmware (the latest).
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I've done as you suggested - I did this during a chat session with a support resource from Linksy.  Things still behave the same.
I have tried your suggestion of trying another disk.  I had an old Maxtor drive that I connected to the router; it works fine!!!
I've since done a chkdsk on my TB drive, and it checked out clean.
I'm guessing here - it appears that the 1TB drive is not identifying itself to the router's satisfaction, but it is OK for Windows XP.  What's odd is that this all worked a week ago.  The only thing I can think of is that we had some power outages during a recent storm that messed something up (which shouldn't be the case since it is all connected through a decent surge protector).
    Any other ideas are appreciated.
    Thanks!
