Iomega drive locks up my iMac

Using time machine on my iMac with an Iomega drive locks up my computer--as soon as I remove or shut off the drive, it unlocks---

  • Old iomega drive to use with imac

my neighbors' have an older computer and use a zip drive which uses
a scsi connection. They would like to buy a new computer but are worried about this connection method as the new imacs don't have scsi.
is there an adaptor for this or will we be out of luck.
    any help would be appreciated.

Not to be thick, but is there somthing that I am missing here? An old, outdated, slow and expensive storage medium is keeping them from buying a new computer?
Unless they have a device that absolutely has to use Zip disks, get that stuff off the Zip disks and replace them with optical disks or even USB flash drives.
I like Iomega as a company and believe they offer quality products, but their proprietary storage like Jazz, Zip, and on and on are enough to make someone crazy.
Stick with non-proprietary storage in the future. It will save a lot of headaches later.

  • I had a new hard drive fitted to my imac and restored it from my time machine back when I try to open itunes I get this message "the itunes library extras.itdb file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file"

I had a new hard drive fitted to my imac and restored it from my time machine back up on an external hard drive when I try to open itunes I get this message "the itunes library extras.itdb file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file"

To solve this issue all I did was check to ensure that the file permissions were set as described by the earlier posts, followed by simply deleting the iTunes Library Genius.itdb file.  Once the file was deleted I was able to open iTunes without difficulty.  Note that I am running Windows 8.  Hope this helps!

  • IMac intel core, 10.6.8 - isn't mounting my partioned iomega drive. How do i get it to mount and stay mounted?

iMac intel core, 10.6.8 - isn't mounting my partitioned iomega drive. It was mounting one of the partitions, but not the other one for a while. Then they both stopped showing up. I can not select the drive in Time Machine. I verified and repaired the iMac hard drive with Disk Utility. Then tried to verify and repair iomega drive in Disk Utility. It appears briefly but then disappears. One partition might be bad, what do i do? Then name of the partition changed to something like disk1:3 when it was called MAC.  I want to see what's on it and ideally continue to use it as our backup in Time Machine. How do I get it to mount and stay mounted?

The usage figure reported by the activity monitor is likely to include only the core progam, the APIs that are being called and space for variables. FCP moves huge amounts of data around the system but, in general, I would imagine these are handled by the OS so would not (except maybe momentarily) be included in the acitivity monitor total.
If you have very little memory and it "runs out" so to speak, the OS will start swapping files on and off the disc which will slow the system down to a crawl if you have a standard hard drive. So with 16GB you have loads of room for the data transfers to take place quickly and efficiently. So, I would say you had not wasted your money! A very wise investment.

  • Can I install Aperture on an Iomega hard drive attached to my IMac and use it from there with iPhoto pix on the IMaac

Can  I install Aperture on an external Ilmega hard drive attached to my IMac and run Aperture from there to use it with photos on my IMac iPhoto library?

It's usually best to have applications on the boot drive, so I'd turn your idea around: run Aperture from the internal disk and park iPhoto and maybe iTunes libraries on an external - which would free up space on the internal.

  • Time Machine loses iOmega drive

4 20" iMacs with iOmega 500 GB USB drives attached. Macs were upgraded to Leopard and the iOmegas were purchased from Apple for use with Time Machine. The computers are set to shut down at a predetermined time and the external iOmegas are set to be on 24/7. Sometimes, when the computer starts up, the iOmega drive won't mount and Time Machine can't find it's designated hard drive. If I turn off the iOmega, the Mac then can see it and Time Machine begins working. System Preferences are set so that the hard drives do NOT sleep. Any ideas??

    When you say
If I turn off the iOmega, the Mac then can see it and Time Machine begins working.
do you really mean "turn off" or did you mean to say "turn off and then back on" ?
It sounds like when the system shutsdown the iOmega HDs also shutdown and do not startup or power-on when the Mac is powered up.
You need to obtain the iOmega HD specifications from manufacturer's help desk or web pages or contact AppleCare to see if the iOmega HD can be configured to not act this way. Maybe you will need to return these iOmega HDs to Apple store if they cannot be made to behave differently.
None of my USB nor FW externals act this way.
What you've done for your config and system shutdown/startup sequence is exactly what I would have done also.
Can you maybe sleep the Mac rather than shutting them down. The energy while sleeping while not at zero is pretty darn close to zero.
Can you say if the iOmega HDs are powered-off just before you startup the Mac.
Maybe before you startup the Macs you need to power cycle the iOmega HDs. A few extra switches to press but not so much more effort.
    Post back.

  • Why is my external hd & flash drive locking up when transferring .m4a?

Why is my external hd & flash drive locking up when transfering .m4a?
I recently upgraded my software to 10.6.3 on my iMac Intel Core 2 Duo. When I transfer movie files specifically to my USB flash drive and external hard drives, they now cause my imac to freeze. If the file size is larger than 500K I experience this problem.
    What is the issue?

They are formated as MS-DOS Fat
    Thanks

As I said, I don't use Time Machine, so it'd be best to wait for an "expert" answer, but, with my very limited knowledge, I'd say: probably not - so, for now, I'd suggest you read up on Time Machine:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=search&src=support_site.home.search&local e=en_US&q=time%20machine
And, you might be attracting more knowledgeable answers if you were to post this question in the Time Machine Forum (part of the Snow Leopard forums).

I had a new hard drive replaced in my imac. Now my 1st generation apple TV does not appear under devices in itunes. How do I get my apple tv to connect to my computer? My OS is 10.6.8

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Navigate to Settings > Computers > Your Library on the Apple TV, you may be told you will lose all synced content, but you can't doing anything abouty this, you won't lose any purchased content that has yet to be transferred. Then select Settings > Computers > Connect To iTunes, note the passcode that appears on screen, click on the device in iTunes and enter the passcode when prompted.

  • How do I restore from old hard drive to a new iMac ?

The logic board in my mid 2008 iMac 24" has failed just 3 months out of AppleCare. To replace this will cost me HK$ 6500. I was going to buy a new mac anyway, just waiting for the next refresh model to come out.  So a new 27" i7 with highest spec and SSD and 2TB hard drive with AppleCare will cost me HK$ 24k. No brainer to just buy a new iMac rather than spend 25% of the cost to repair a 3+ year old iMac.
The hard drive is working ok so the repair centre said they will remove the hard drive for me and suggested I buy an enclosure for it , put the old drive in the enclosure and then transfer the program's, settings and files to the new IMac.
What is the best way to do this ?  I obviously cannot boot up the old drive. Can I connect this drive  to the new iMac and then use setup assistant to move settings and program's to the SSD on the new iMac , then use migration assistant to move the remainder of the files ( documents folder, iPhoto etc) to the hard drive on the new iMac ?
If not then any suggestions ?

Do as the repair center suggests and place the old drive in an enclosure then connect it to the new Mac.
When you first start new Mac run Setup Assistant and tell it to restore from the external drive.
It worked for me and should work for you.

My drive failed on my iMac and I had to get a new drive but now my iTunes music is gone including all the CD's I added to iTunes, and all of my custom Playlists. All of that stuff is still on my iPhone 4, but how do I get it all onto my iMac again? I have CD's on my phone that i no longer have the physical copies of so i can't just re-download them all, plus it would take forever! I just want to know if there is a way to get all of what is still on my phone, back over to my iMac with it's new drive and restore my full iTunes library to the iMac with playlists, CD downloaded music, and my iTunes bought stuff, so i can go back to synching the 2 devices without losing everything that's on my phone that used to be on both devices?

  • I recently purchased a new iMac with an external drive.  I want to transfer my files from my old iMac to the external drive, but I'm afraid that doing that will compromise the use of the external drive on my new iMac.  Comments?  Help?

I recently purchased a new iMac with an 1 Terrabyte external drive.  I want to transfer my files from my old iMac to the external drive, but I'm afraid that doing that will compromise the use of the external drive on my new iMac.  I have not downloaded the external drive's software onto my old Mac because of this concern.  May I simply "drag and drop" the contents I want transferred to the external drive, then set up my new Mac with the drive and download there? or is there a better procedure?  Comments?  Help?

If your intention is to copy a just documents and data (word processing files and music for example) then yes, you can use drag and drop. If you want to transfer data and applications and permissions, it would actually be easiest to connect the drive to your old computer and turn on TimeMachine. Once TM is finished, connect the drive to your new computer and restart it holding the option key to get into Recovery mode. Then you can use the restore from TM option to transfer your data and programs to the new computer.

  • Can time capsule back up an external hard drive attached to my imac and the iMac internal Harddrive

Can time capsule back up an external hard drive attached to my imac and the iMac internal Harddrive

In addition to Kappy's comments, the external drive must be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in order for Time Machine to be able to back it up.

  • How do I transfer data from a hard drive to my new Imac

    Hello,
First off, I don't know much about computers, so please forgive me if I sound stupid... Anyways, I had a PowerMac G5 that took a dump. The hard drive is still good and so is the info on it. I want to transfer the pictures, itunes library, and word docs to my new Imac. I thought I had this info backed up to EXTERNAL HD, but I think I did it wrong and the info is not there. Is there a way to transfer the info from my old G5 HD to my new Imac. Genius Bar guy already removed my HD from my G5. My G5 will not start up past the grey apple screen. Thanks for any help you can provide.

What Larry means is buy something similar to OWC Neptune 3.5" Oxford 934 FireWire 400 (1394A) Enclosure Kit for SATA Hard Drives up to 1TB. All Cables Included http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/NP35SFW/ and then connect your old hard drive to your new iMac with FireWire 400. Mount the disk and transfer the data.
A good solution for only $48 USD.
