Iomega hard drive problem copying movies

I've just purchased an Iomega external hard drive and every time I try to copy an iMovie project the following message appears:
'You cannot copy the item "icon" because the name is too long or includes characters that the disc cannot display.'
Could it be a problem with the tilda (~) character that's used in the back up project? I'd appreciate any advice. - Graeme

The problem is that your drive is PC-formatted. It must be Mac-formatted.

  • Older iomega hard drive problems

We purchased three iomega Hi-speed usb 2.0 with 7200 RPM/320GB Desktop Hard Drives.  One was connected to our desktop computer (long gone) for our back-up photo files.  We can no longer access the information (25 years of photos).  Our current computer cannot accept the hard drive to open the files.  I will try a computer doctor to see if he/she might have an older computer that would be able to retrieve the data and place it on another driver.  If there is any suggestions on the best way to go out this, I would appreciate it.
The other two units are connected to our Time Warner Cable TV system, each one in different rooms.  We have been routinely recording the same programs for years.  Suddenly not all recordings are being accepted.  Both systems are having the same problem.  (1) When I explore the TV viewing log for those programs that did not record, the notation states"The set-up was unable to record this program") I don't know if it is something with the iomega, something with the cable service, or some new compatability issue between the two systems.  Sometimes the program is on the recorded list, but when selected there is nothing there, it moves along like there is a program to watch, but the screen is blank and/or (3) the program is there, we may verify there is a recording, but don't always watch it immediately.  The next time the recorded program list is reviewed the progam has now been dumped and the notation in # 1 is what is listed as the reason.  All other programs have the correct notations  . .  we chose to cancel a program or we deleted a program we already watched.  I have changed the priority of the programs, deselected them and set them up again to record, rebooted the entire system, even tried that as a daily routine, and nothing seems to have an effect.
I realize these hard drives are old in the scheme of things, but I would like to continue to use the two as described if I can be given information on what I might do to verify what is wrong and how to correct it.   Thanks much, Nancy

Are the receivers older as well? It sounds like it could be an issue with them. I was having similar issues with a directv receiver with built in disk and try replaced it. Do you have another drive you can connect to it for testing? See if it replicates on another drive. You could also connect the drives to a computer and see if they need to be de-fragmented or reformatted?
As for the one disk, if you are unable to access the data or drive then you will need to take it to a data recovery service. In the future, we always recommend having a back up of important data.

  • Iomega hard drive problems with iBook

I've just bought an Iomega 120 GB portable hard drive but it refuses to show up on desk top. I'm running OSX 10.4 which should be fine. I don't have any very large files (just photos and music) and no more than 50GB worth.
Any ideas what could be the problem?

could it be the power supply provided by the iBook isn't sufficient to power the HDD; it has no independent power supply?

  • Iomega Hard Drive Problem

Hi I'm not sure if this is the right forum to post on as i have an issue with an external drive if i am in the wrong place could someone point me in the right direction please
    Thanx
If this is the right place the problem i am having is this
I bought a 1TB iomega external hard drive from apple I plugged it into my mac & all was working perfect the problem started when i plugged it in via USB to my windows laptop i have just bought a Macbook Pro so all i wanted to do is get some files from my old laptop
This didnt work all it did was ask me to format the drive which i didnt do as i had already put over 400GB on there from my Powermacs hard drive & an old formec hard drive i was intending to get rid of a lot of this but i was trying to get everything in one place to start sorting through it. So i took it out of my windows laptop & put it back into my Powermac via Firewire now it wont show up on my desktop & in disk utility i can see the hard drive but in the erase or partition tabs the drive is listed as an MSDOS drive
I have tried verifying the disk no joy & i have also tried to repair the disk again no joy
So i now have a situation where the windows laptop is asking me to hard drive to format the drive & my mac wont even entertain it
all i want is to get most of the 400GB i have on there & then i'll format it no probs
    Any ideas anyone
    Thank You

Ok Time is getting a bit tight now i kind of need some files from this hard drive this week.
In disk utility under erase tab there is a security options button here i get a pop up window with 4 options on there now the first option is,
    Don't Erase Data
Erases directory information so that data is no longer accessible. The data is left unchanged on disk until its disk space is required & is written over. Data is potentially recoverable until then. This option is the quickest but least secure.
From what i can gather if i check this & perform an erase i can recover the data afterwards as long as i don't overwrite anything.
My question now is if i perform the erase how can i recover my data is this something i can perform myself or will i need to take it to someone to do this for me.
    Any Help guys Please

  • I cannot copy files from Macbook to Iomega hard drive

I wanted to use my Iomega hard drive on my macbook for the first time but I cannot copy any files.
Can anybody provide me with the steps I have to do to configure the Iomega (formerly used on a PC)
    for the Macbook?
    Thanks

If you want to use the drive exclusively on your Mac - and not a Mac and PC - open Disk Utility (Applications>Utilities folder), click on the drive to be erase, and format it as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" with a single GUID partition and give it a new name. It should only take a minute or so (depending on the size of the drive) to format.
Call back if you have any problems.

  • 2007 Macbook pro kernel panic, hard drive problem?

    Hello!
I've been trying to sort this for a few weeks now, and I'm hoping someone may be able to shed some light on the situation.
    Problem:
I have a 2007 15" MacBook Pro (MacBook Pro 15/2.2/2GB/120GB) which a few weeks ago suddenly died on me. It has what I believe is called a kernel panic. On startup a grey screen falls down with a box saying that I need to restart the computer.
I took it to my local apple store where they booted an OSX (not sure which) from an external drive (I think it was using a firewire cable). The MacBook appeared to work fine from this external hard drive, but when disk utility was run on the internal hard drive, the disk utility eventually froze.
Based on this info, the guy there deduced (fairly reasonably I suppose) that the problem must be my hard drive, and replacing my hard drive should solve this. So  bought a
    Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500 GB,Internal,7200 RPM,6.35 cm (2.5").
The equipment I now have to try and get my MacBook to work:
    - An iMac 2.7 Ghz i5 (8gb Ram) running Mac OSX 10.7.5
    - A replacement hard drive for the MacBook (Seagate Momentus)
    - A SATA HArd drive USB docking station
    - A 500gb iOmega Hard drive with Firewire 800 cables
    - The 2 original install disks for Tiger that came with the MacBook Pro
    - A working .dmg of retail snow leopard
What I have tried so far:
I have formatted the replacement hard drive correctly (GUID) for Mac OSX. If I turn the macbook pro on with the new hard drive in, a folder icon with a question mark in it flashes in the middle of the screen... If I put in the original install disk, it starts to read it (apple logo and spinning wheel) and then eventually kernel panics. When I hold option on start up, the 'Mac OSX Install Disk 1" is the only option available (the cd/dvd drive must be working if it recognises the disk here i assume?) but when I select it, it spins for a bit, then kernel panics.
My next approach was to try and create an installable and bootable version of an OSX on an external hard drive. (I have tried this with both the original Tiger install disk, and with the leopard.dmg)... I followed the readily available instructions online on how to do this, and was able to restore the first partion on the external hard drive with the OSX install disk image.... The problem I have then face is installing the osx onto the second partition.
This seems to be because my newish iMac/OSX wont let me boot any OSX installer CD/firewire or otherwise, other than the original operating system for the iMac.
I thought this wouldn't matter, as I would be able to run the installer when I plugged the iOmega into my MacBook pro. The problem I now have is that the Macbook wont recogninise the iOmega when it is connected by firewire. It will only recognise it when connected by USB, but when I try and run the installer, it spins for a while then kernel panics. I believe this is because MacBook pros of this age will only run OSX Install/bootable through firewire.
So... hardware wise, could this be anything other than a problem with the hard drive? As we know the MacBook pro will boot from an external drive...
If anyone has actually managed to read this far into this incredibly boring, waffling description of my problem, I am already grateful, and if anyone can give any help or advice at all regarding this, I will be eternally in your debt....
    Thank you

    I have a 2007 15" MacBook Pro (MacBook Pro 15/2.2/2GB/120GB)
    The MacBook Pro 3,1
    So I bought a Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500 GB,Internal,7200 RPM,6.35 cm (2.5").
Right the standard hard drive (not the XT which is a hybrid and can be problematic)
a folder icon with a question mark in it flashes in the middle of the screen...
That's the firmware telling you it can't find the/a bootable OS.
The 2 original install disks for Tiger that came with the MacBook Pro
If I put in the original install disk, it starts to read it (apple logo and spinning wheel) and then eventually kernel panics
but when I select it, it spins for a bit, then kernel panics.
Your machines firmware was updated, it will only now boot from 10.6 either on a bootable USB thumb drive or via the white 10.6.3 retail disks you can get by calling Apple by phone.
This seems to be because my newish iMac/OSX wont let me boot any OSX installer CD/firewire or otherwise, other than the original operating system for the iMac.
True. If the iMac could boot from the 10.6.3 disk, then you could install 10.6.3 via Firewire Target Disk Mode onto the other Mac if for instance the Superdrive didn't work.
MacBook pros of this age will only run OSX Install/bootable through firewire.
    True.
Just order the 10.6.3 white retail disk from Apple via phone, forget 10.4 and 10.5 as they are not getting updates anyway.
However you can extract iLife from the 10.4/10.5 machine specific disks using Pacifist from CharlesSoft.

  • Restoring iTunes files after hard drive problems

    HI.
I recently had hard drive problems and since the recovery of the data I have lost all my files from iTunes. The sogs I have put on to the Mac via CD's are all still there but all the iTunes downloads have disapeared. This is probably because I didn't back up!
I also have numerous duplications, which I eventually removed from itunes but I know the majority of which will return if I drag my music folder across.
This will be a hige taks again to remove the duplications.
I want to use this unfortunate incident to my advantage though and now have a clear out of my unwanted files and keep my iTunes nicely organised.
I also lost my playlists, which is a major pain.
By looking at the support threads it seems that I can use my ipod to put my library back as it should be. Will this also replace my downloaded songs? My other issue is that some of my iTunes downloads, downloaded with some problems, which are obviously on my ipod. How do I go about getting the songs repaired?
    Thanks for any help.

I imagine if the files exist on the ipod you can get them transferred over. if they don't exist, they are gone.
As for the corrupt files you would need to provide more information on the issues.

  • Is there a way we can change the path of the songs to an external hard drive when we move the songs over?   also, is there a way to delete multiple songs easily?

is there a way we can change the path of the songs to an external hard drive when we move the songs over?   also, is there a way to delete multiple songs easily?
I recently moved my songs over for hard drive space.  Really don't want to have to go back through each album, etc... to get that to work.
Last time I tried making a "library" that didn't work either.
On the topic of deleting multiple songs that are the same, is there an easier way then to select each one?
Seems to me apple isn't user friendly

Welcome to the world of digital media. Your can't really transfer it. I don't know what the rules are about transferring to your spouse but I do know that in some cases when you die, your heirs cannot inherit your digital media. This is why there is still an advantage to buying the CD since the usage rights belong to whomever holds the physical media.
A possible workaround is to burn the songs to a music CD with yout account (tracks only without song titles) and then having your wife upload it as a regular music CD onto her account. It's been a while since i've done this so I'm not sure if it would work now.
Please note that I'm not advocating copyright and/or TOS violations. I'm only suggesting ways to copy music for your own personal use which has traditonally been permitted. I only did this because I wanted to convert iTunes songs to mp3 files so I could burn them onto a data CD for use in my car. It would make sense that since married couples are a joint entity, this would be personal use.
Also, I'm not a lawyer so don't take this as legal advice.

How can I import a movie into iMovie 09 from a hard drive?  The movie will open and play in idvd but breaks into separate files that can't be downloaded when I try to import.  Can it be done? I am trying to create a disc of player highlights for a collegiate coach, and I am using movie files downloaded to my hard drive from a DVD created on a PC.

No unfortunately it won't open in quicktime either.  It does the same thing that Imovie does, separates it into two file folders audio and video, and if i select video it opens to reveal 8 files that cannot be selected.  VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TS.IFO, VIDEO_TS.VOB,VTS_01_0.BUP, VTS_01_0.IFO, VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VB, VTS_01_3.VOB.  All of which cannot be opened or selected.
Opening it in Idvd and folllowing your suggestion works and I get a format code of NTSC.  Is that the same?  Thank you for your time and response.

Well, yes, data does get corrupted sometimes.
The trick is finding what data.
By 'cleaned' are you therefor meaning that the drive has been erased and the system re-installed?
Because that's the quickest way to deal with such a situation.
Back up the system first of course,
Add back 3rd party apps one at a time in case one of them is causing the problem.
