Iomega Zip Disc Drive: Power Mac G3 (B&W) w/ Mac OS 9.2.2

I have a Power Macintosh G3 (B&W series) and the Iomega Zip Disc Drive (100MB) won't initialize my disc. It keeps coming up with a

window that says:
Disc Initialization Failed!
I've tried Apple's "Fix," but it still won't work!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Iomega ZIP-100 Drive - configuration

    Hey all,
how to configure Iomega ZIP-100 Drive (SCSI) under System 7?

    Hello, moksienciuk.
You can configure many drive settings with Iomega Tools, which you can find on the Tools disk that comes with the Zip drive. If you don't have an Iomega Tools disk, you may be able to find one online. (Iomega no longer sells them, so check Amazon or eBay.)
    Does this answer your question?

  • Will Iomega Zip 250 Drive Work?

I use a Dual 1 Ghz PowerPC G4 Mac (QuickSilver 2002); run Mac OS X 10.5.8.  I have one open bay below my factory installed optical drive.  Will the:
Iomega Zip 250 MB drive ATAPI work in my Mac?  Mfg. #: 11113  Will I be able to use my Iomega Zip 100 MB disks? Enclosed please see pictures.

When two devices share the same data ribbon cable in a system that doesn't support "Cable Select," the device at the end connector of the ribbon cable is configured as "master," while the device connected to the middle connector is configured as "slave."  Your optical drive likely has its configuration jumper installed as "master," so the Zip drive should have the small plastic jumper installed across the  pins marked "slave."  Do you primarily have 100 MB Zip disks or a mixture of 250 MB and 100 MB disks?  The reason I'm asking is to determine if you've already acquired the Zip 250 drive or would prefer a Zip 100 drive?  A Zip 250 drive can read and write both Zip 250 and Zip 100 disks, but erasing/reformatting a Zip 100 disk in a Zip 250 drive with the IomegaWare software takes a long time.  Iomega had a tech support article about this some years ago.  Since the IomegaWare software isn't compatible with OS 10.5.x, you wouldn't attempt to install it anyway.  If you only need to access these Zip 100 or 250 disks for file retrieval, why not save yourself some trouble and use a USB bus-powered external Zip 250 drive.  It connects to your computer via a USB cable for both power and data, so it doesn't need a separate power supply.  They're no longer manufactured (as is the case with all Zip drives), but you could probably find one at eBay.  I recently saw a new-in-box/sealed Zip 250 USB drive priced at $10 in a thrift store, but it had no takers for weeks.  After CD-R/RW and DVD±RW disks replaced Zip 100, 250, and 750 drives as the preferred media for data backup, flash drives have gradually replaced CD and DVD burners.

  • Iomega Zip 100 Drive Stopped Working in OS 10.4.4

We have 3 G4 Macs which have internal Zip 100 drives installed. they have all worked fine until we upgraded to system 10.4.4, and now the computer does not recognize the zip disk when inserted.
Iomega says that the software for the drives is native to OS X, and they do not have a driver update beyond 4.0.2. I am stumped in trying to figure out how to get the drives working again, and will welcome help on this problem.
    Dudley

Hi, Dudley. It looks like Iomega has abandoned the old and now very obsolete Zip 100 technology in favor of newer, larger, faster, more reliable, longer-lived, and higher-capacity removable media, notably the 35GB-per-cartridge Rev technology. I doubt that either Iomega or Apple will bother to write a driver for Zip 100 drives that is compatible with any recent version of OS X, never mind any future version.
When a 100MB Zip disk costs around $5 (when you can still find them), a 700MB CD-R costs 15 cents, a 4.7GB DVD-R costs $2, and huge, fast hard drives go for $.30-.$35/GB, there's just no reason to keep using Zip100 drives or disks. Put Zip's very high costs together with the very limited lifespan of a Zip disk, and you get a technology that is dead, dead, dead.
Find an old Mac that can still read your Zip disks, copy everything off all of them onto a FireWire hard drive, and say goodbye to Zips.

  • IOMEGA Zip disc doesn't mount

When I inserted the zip disc on OS 10.1.5, the pop-up appeared "A disc attempting o mount as Unknown...Use Disk Utility to check the disc..."
I used Disc Utility and run "verify" and "repair" on the Zip disc. After both were completed, I ejected the disc and inserted it again. The same pop-up showed up and the disc didn't mount.
If I start up with OS. 9, the zip disc has no problem mounting. What can I do to have this zip disc mount on OS 10.1.5??

I agree, with all you say,
The exception is, for what ever the reason it won't mount, to eliminate any question why that is the reason for the plug in and then restart.
I also agree about Hot Swaping. There have also been some reports of problems with 10.1 wheras there were non or very few with 10.2 and 10.3
So if it won't mount after my suggestion then there is another problem.
Downloading the software will enable a user to format the Zip Disks from PC format to MAC
Sometimes users will purchase disk's that are preformated PC and this will cause the error message unless you re format the disk to MAC.

  • Iomega ZIP 100 Drive

    Hi,
I want to use an Iomage ZIP drive (parallel version) 100, I searched the web and found out that there are two modules for ZIP drives ppa and imm - as far as I have read my specific drive has to be used with the ppa driver. But the module is absent and the line in the kernel configuration file is commented. I tried to build a new kernel with this option set to m but I failed horribly. Although I compiled the kernel, it wouldn't work, there was no vmlinuz file?!
I'm a total newbie to kernel compilation/configuration - can someone out there give me a hint?

  • Audigy Platinum ex disc drive power sup

Just made the mistake of buying a new pc and trying to fit my soundcard, the original platinum ex.
It would appear that i cannot plug into the PSU power supply, even using the Y connector provided.
The only spare power cable in a 3.5 mini female socket, which would be great, but it doesnt reach.
I cannot find a 3.5 to 3.5 mini male to female extension cable... can anyone help at all? i've googled it to death.
I cant afford a new soundcard and i've just bought this new pc, i just don't know what to do. do the new audigys require power supply?

I checked the cords multiple times and reinstalled the drivers multiple times. I have recently discovered that the dri've only doesnt get full power when Line-in 3 (the RCA connection on the back) is connected to the output of my mixing board (eurorack mx604A). If i unplug the cable from the mixer, the external dri've's power light returns to full strength and upon reboot, the volume knob actually syncs with the volume control in windows. However, Now I get never-ending static and popping from the PCI output and I still do not get any sound through the headphone jack on the external dri've.
There seems to be some bleed-through or something from the inputs on the external dri've. currently when monitoring the cards output through the PCI card, I get severe static/popping if i unmute line-in 3 (RCA jacks) but the other two only produce static intermittantly. I have never succeeded in getting anything to play through the headphonesMessage Edited by uhmerika on 06-23-2006 03:2 PM

  • Iomega ZIP drive-constantly unable to read disks when using on both PC&Mac

I'm constantly having problems with Iomega ZIP disks:
-can't be read by PC or MAC
    -needs reformatting
I have to erase the disk using disk utitlities and make sure its FAT 32 (not 16) for the PC to read it.
However this is only temporary as the disk will again become unreadable by both machines.
Is this because i'm constantly using is on both machines?
Does anyone else have this problem?
    Any solutions?
This appears to have started since the last major OS X upgrade - i.e 10.3 to 10.4.
    Cheers
    Tasha

You may not want to hear this - but the best thing to do is to get anything that matters off Zip disks, and never touch them again. They're inherently unreliable, and you're much better off using CD-R or DVD-R.

  • Iomega zip drive won't copy

After having a corrupted hard drive fixed and Os 10.2.8 reinstalled, I found that my Iomega Zip 100 drive wouldn't copy large folders (microsoft word). It would copy individual files and smaller folders. The error message I got was -50. I understand that this relates to bad zip discs.
I tried a new zip disc and also tried a different Iomega zip drive, with identical results. It seems that the problem lies with the computer, not the zip drive. I'd be grateful for any suggestions.

Apologies for the acronyms. HFS and HFS+ are Mac drive formats. Newer machines' drives must be HFS+.
DU is Disk Utility and should be located in Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities. DU lets you run some maintenance checks of existing drives and format them if needed. Example, you buy a new hard drive and you have to make it Mac-happy. It's done with DU.

  • Macbook - AVCHD import - External disc drive - Import error

Whilst attempting to import any AVCHD clip, I always receive a message informing me there has been an error during import and to check video carefully. Afterwards no imported video images are visible in the events list. i.e. the 'title' is there but no image(s). i.e. it looks like that the final part of the process which creates the small quicktime files has failed.
Now here's the interesting thing, this ONLY occurs when I am attempting to capture the video on my external 1Tb Iomega UltraMax disc drive.
It does not matter if I attempt the import as 'full' 1080i or the 1/4 sized 'reduced' import - both fail. Its just as if the processed output cannot be written fast enough. The import times are circa 4* the length of the clip.
When I however do the import to the built-in drive on the Mac, it works perfectly. Import time to the built-in drive is twice the clip length.
It does not matter if I attach the external drive by USB or firewire (though the latter appears to be slightly faster), both fail with the import. N.B. The drive is MAC formatted.
I have a 1 year old Intel Macbook (2Ghz & 2Gb, 120 Mb disc drive) with the latest version of Leopard and everything fully patched.
Has any one got any thoughts or solutions to this please?

Hi folks and special thanks to those whom put forward suggestions.
As mentioned in my original post, the external Iomega Ultramax 1Tb drive is MAC formatted, (and journaled).
One consideration was wether journaling was significantly slowing performance, but according to everything I read, there is little impact.
I took an old 60gb laptop drive and installed it into an external USB2 drive box and formatted as a MAC journaled drive. I then did an AVCHD import using iMovie 08 and all worked fine. I also carefully timed the import and the particular clip took exactly 59 seconds.
I deleted the import, rebooted, formatted the drive as a MAC NON journaled drive and did the same import. A worked fine and it took a fraction over 57 seconds. i.e. the overhead was just a few percent for journaling.
At this point it seemed to prove that something was very odd indeed going on with the Iomega Ultramax drive. This drive is used for time machine backups and time machine had never informed me of any inability to write to the disc.
Using the built-in Mac OSX disk utilities I ran a 'verify' on the drive. Guess what... it came-up with a number of errors including bad structures. I then ran a 'repair'. Unfortunately it was unable to resolve the the faults and I ended-up having to reformat the Iomega drive, as a MAC journaled device.
Tried a new AVCHD import to the Iomega Ultramax and it worked fine. In fact I later tried running Time machine (which was now doing a complete first time backup of my Macbook) _at the same time_ as an AVCHD import of many clips to the SAME drive. All worked absolutely fine.
For those interested in such things, memory usage during an AVCHD import was about 650Mb out of 2Gb RAM and processor usage (Intel dual core) was about 74% in each core.

  • IOMEGA ZIP CD 650 DRIVE NOT RECOGNIZED

I have an iMac G3 (333 Mhz) with 256 RAM running Mac OS 8.6. I had an Iomega Zip CD 650 and it worked beautifully (highest burn rate was 4x but that was fine). All of a sudden, it started giving me hardware errors. I tried everything I could think of, but it still did not work, so I think the drive was just dead.
Anyway, for my operating system, there aren't really any burners out there that I like, and all the new ones are for USB 2.0, which is not supported by OS 8.6 (or maybe supported but running at a 1.1 speed). I bought one on eBay (the same one I had before, or so I thought). My last one was also bought on eBay.
So, using Toast Titanium 5.0.2, Toast won't recognize the drive. It tells me there is no recordable drive and to check the connections and the power. I've tried that, tried the troubleshooting wizzard, tried basically everything. I know the USB port works (tested), and I know the drive gets power and somehow the computer connects with it because when I reboot, the drive light blinks. Just in case I also tried using Toast 4.0 and 4.1.2, but I got the same results, "no CD Recorder found, check power and connections."
I checked the serial number to identify exactly what kind of drive it is and to my surprise, it is identified as "ZIP CD 650/IOMEGA CD-RW 4X4X6X USB 2.0 EXTERNAL DRIVE. So, first I was surprised because it's a 2.0 and that one is not even identified in the main product listing. Second, when I go into specs, it says that the transfer rate is USB 1.1, but what would be the point of making a USB 2.0 drive with a USB 1.1 transfer rate?.
I keep getting a message saying "ISD ATAPI BRIDGE" requires software not installed, but I have tried deleting all Toas software, re-installing it, and it still won't be recognized by my computer.
Any suggestions? Should I just cry, forget about it, and hope to find a CD-RW Zip 650 that is listed as USB 1.1 instead of 2.0? Should I just forget about writing CD's until I've saved enough money to buy a new iMac G5 with the Intel Dual Processors?
    Thanks for your help

iMac G3   Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier   256 RAM

Where can buy a replacement external drive for the Iomega 650 Zip Drive that will work with OS 9.1? After reading all of the problems in the discussion with the Iomega Zips, I really don't want to buy another one. What else can I purchase that will allow me to burn CD's (don't really care about DVD's) on my imac?
Let me give some background on the problems I have had. My Iomega 650 Zip Drive worked fine for the first couple of years, then worked sporadically. Now I'm convinced it's completely unusable. It stopped reading CD's that I previously burned with it sometime ago (I'm still able to read them in the slot-loading CD reader that is on the imac) but for awhile I could still get it to burn new CD's.
Now it won't do anything. The Zip drive is recognized, as it appears as the drive to use when I open Adeptec Toast 4.1.2 to burn a CD. However, when I insert a blank CD into the drive I get the message "Waiting for the writer". If I select disc information it says "there is no disc in the recorder". If I eject the disc and insert it again I get the message "insert a recordable disc".
As for the behavior of the drive itself, it spins a couple of times, then stops. I tried cleaning it and it spins better but still never gets up to a high enough speed to burn or read a CD.
My imac came with a slot loader that reads CD's but won't burn them. I tried installing Disc Burner 1.01 to see if I could use the slot loader to burn CD's but it doesn't work. I also installed Discribe-9x-mac-ppc-5047 after talking with the Iomega tech people and it doesn't work either.
Any sugguestions on what I can do/purchase to get my imac to burn CD's is greatly appreciated.

  • How to transfer photo files from Iomega Zip Drive cassette to my iMac?

    1 GHz PowerPC G4
    768 MB DDR SDRAM
    external hard disk 500 GB
    external hard disk 125 GB
Many years ago I stored/copied my photos onto a Iomega Zip Drive cassette. Subsequently I lost everything in a computer malfunction which Apple Store could not fix; they ultimately replaced my computer. The computer that I was using when I used the Iomega Zip Drive was a Mac Quadra, not an iMac. Unfortunately, I had not backed up anything so the only thing that I have from the time prior to the malfunction is what I have stored on these Zip Drive cassettes and on the hard drive of the iMac that malfunctioned and was replaced with a new iMac. The photos that I really want to get are those of my husband who has since passed away.
It has been so long that I used them or even looked at them that now I don't know how to get those photos onto my present iMac (and I am assuming that it is possible).
Would you be so kind as to tell me what to do to transfer my photos from the Iomega Zip Drive cassette? Thank you very much.

Lorna, I'm sorry to hear of your loss.
The easiest thing to do is to purchase an External USB Zip drive (link). As ZIP disks are now legacy technology ebay has a great many available which means they are pretty low cost. Simply connect the drive and insert the disk. The disk will mount on to the desktop.
Alternatively you could see if a local Internet café still has such as drive available and they will be able to burn the contents to CD for a few dollars.
    Hope that helps.

  • Can I connect a (scsi) Syquest EZ Drive(zip discs)?

I have searched and read the threads available here but am still not sure about what I can do and can't do.
I have a new Mac Pro and I have a Syquest EZ Drive (uses 100MG Zip Discs). Is there a way to connect this to the MacPro? It appears to be the 50Pin type. I want to use them for communication with friends who only have Zip Disks.
    Thanks.

    Ned.
Can you say that another way? I didn't quite follow you.
By the way, what this is about is that I resurrected my old Power Mac 8600/250, with the intention of giving it to a friend. Once I got playing with it I remembered how truly cool it was (is). Very many ports for audio and video in and out. Anyway, I decided to try and make more use of it. It has what I believe are two types of ethernet ports (AAUI and 10Base-T ethernet connectors on back of computer). But I have not been successful connecting from these to the router I use with my Mac Pro. Hence, my interest in getting the Mac Pro to read the Zip disks the 8600 so happily handles.
Blah, blah, blah. (I have time on my hands).

What do I need to get in order to do this, and will I also need to download a driver for the Mac to see it?

More likely than not, you're going to have to find some computer that has the right interface.
